Run Fox Run

Run Fox Run

The world thinks The Fox is dead. That’s exactly how she planned it. Born to two of the most powerful superheroes on the planet, The Fox spent her life trapped behind mansion walls, brutal training sessions, and the crushing expectations of heroes who cared more about perfection than their daughter. To the public, General Storm and Lady Rose are icons. To The Fox, they’re the reason she learned how to survive bruises with a smile. So she vanished. With the help of the only person who ever truly loved her, The Fox fakes her death and disappears into the underground, determined to build a normal life far away from capes, cameras, and violence. New name. New city. New rules. But the world is falling apart faster than she can outrun it. Monstrous creatures are crawling out any crack. Entire cities are collapsing overnight. And when the Fox discovers the terrifying truth behind the outbreaks, she realizes her family may not be the heroes humanity believes they are. Now hunted by the people who raised her and haunted by powers she tried to leave behind, The Fox has two choices: Keep running. Or turn around and fight.

Chapter: What the Mutants came For
With the final buzzer, we split up. I climbed up high. My strength was in quick, sneaky attacks. I could do close up combat, but I tire out quickly. Mr. Griffin gave us radios in case of an emergency. I stayed close to the school. Watching and waiting for the mutants to arrive. I was rusty, so I was fine with dealing with stragglers. I wasn’t sure what caused a group of them to gather and randomly attack. Even with all the studies my parents paid for to better understand them. They came up with nothing. They even tried coming up with a cure. But no luck with that either. Sometimes it felt like they appeared out of nowhere. That’s how random the attacks can be. That is why they created buzzer systems like the one at the school. To give people a chance to run and hide. There were many bunkers built throughout the city for this reason. Biters couldn’t break through much. They are only dangerous to people if they break the skin and fluids from their bodies are exchanged with the open wou

Chapter: This is What I was Trained for
Mutants have a distinctive scent. It goes along with their overall wrongness. They smelled like rotten earth and industrial buildings. Depending on the type of mutant, all they had to do was be near you, and you could become infected. Only superheroes can defend from those because they have some of the mutant genes in them, so they don’t turn. If you don’t have the mutant genes in you already, you’re at risk of turning into a mutant. Those mutants are rare. It’s more common to face the ones that if they bite you or break your skin, you become infected. But it was always better to be safe, then dead.I turned to Cindy, asking if there was a safe place for students to lay low while mutants attacked. I had to get her to safety. Fear clouded her eyes, and they darted all around; her body shook in fear. She was in shock. I slapped her across her face.“CINDY!” I yelled her name. Grabbing her by the shoulders, shaking her. She snapped out of it. “Cafeteria,” she said. I grabbed her by the

Chapter: Little Mouse, Don't Run
My head cleared from the fog of pain. Ezra had me on his lap. Head on his chest. He was rubbing gentle circles on my back. I wanted to nestle myself deeper into his embrace. The smell of him was subtle but calming. It reminded me of the forest and coffee shops. Deep. I could easily lose myself in his embrace. At that thought, I instantly jumped up and pushed myself away.“Whoa, little mouse, all is okay.” Ezra calmly stated, hands up.“I… uh…” I wanted to say something, but I didn’t know what. Ezra stood up, making his way to the door.“I will give you some space, you blacked out from the pain, I assume, from the way you screamed and didn’t answer my knocks, I’ll be out here, come out after you relax.” He didn’t seem upset; he just walked away to give me my space. I took a few deep breaths, centering myself again, and walked out of the room. Ezra was in the living room, talking on the phone. He turned when he heard my approach. “Okay, we will be heading back now? Okay. Bye.” Ezra sai

Chapter: Heat in the Hall Way
I remind him of someone he lost? Sarah? Was that who he lost? I had so many questions about that, but I held my tongue. Now wasn’t the time. The nurse was busy, so I decided to go to the bathroom and check out the damage myself. Cindy came into the bathroom and gave me a look like she wanted to talk, so I let her in. Ezra sat in one chair near the bathroom looking like he would rather be anywhere else. I helped myself to an ice pack and some bandages. Like I told Mr. Griffen, this wasn't my first black eye, probably not even close to the worse one I had. I think the worse one I had, I made a mistake and got beaten up by the gang my parents ordered me to follow. I ended up losing consciousness, and they were gone by the time I came to. When I went home I told my mom and dad how I failed the mission and couldn’t find those people. They made sure to punch me in all the places I had marks from them to really drive home the point of my failure. I made sure I never made a mistake like that

Chapter: Paperwork and Bloodlines
Cindy looked worried as I looked over to Mr. Griffen. I was at school, so nothing bad could happen while I was here. Right? I nod to Cindy to leave without me. I walk over to Mr. Griffin. I know I shouldn’t be nervous, but something about him sets me on edge. He was watching everyone leave the room intently. I took a moment to look him over. A thought entered my mind as I was looking at his very familiar features. Not only did he look like me, but he could be Sarah’s older brother. If I say anything, he will wonder how I know about her, and then I’ll have to explain how I found her picture in a random book, some crazy book witch lady told me to find. Yeah, I am not doing that.“So, Miss Hawks, you are emancipated, correct?” Mr. Griffen asked as soon as the last student left the room. Looking at me so intensely, I wonder if he could see my green eyes through my brown colored contacts.“Yeah? It was in my paperwork when I started.” I answered, confused why he was asking. “I read your p

Chapter: Fox In the Branches
Fuck. Ezra had me pinned against the wall. His body on top of mine in a lover's embrace. Shit, what did he say? Green eyes. I didn’t put in my brown contacts. Damn it. Hopefully, I did a good enough job hiding the rest of my face with the scarf. I just had to break from his hold. And get back to the apartment without him noticing. I pushed the heel of my foot on his. He staggers back a step. Just enough for me to bed down and elbow him. He backed up even more with a grunt. It was just enough for me to break free and run down the alley. I couldn’t go up the fire escape yet. So I ran down past a couple of buildings and jumped into a neighbor's yard. I quickly climbed ‌their tree. After a few moments, my breaths evened out. I could hear foot’s stop appro

Chapter: Clueless Men and Good Dogs
We loaded my kidnapper onto the same horse she’d hauled me around on earlier. Hog-tied. Unconscious. The irony was almost poetic. I considered bowing to the universe for its commitment to symmetry. The horse snorted softly, shifting under the unfamiliar weight. I watched her chest rise and fall, steady and unaware, and felt a flicker of something dark curl in my stomach. Satisfaction, maybe. Or relief. Possibly both.We moved through the woods carefully, branches snapping underhoof in quiet, deliberate rhythms. The forest pressed in around us, tall and watchful, the canopy swallowing most of the light. Shadows stretched long and thin, as if listening.Bella ranged ahead, a blur weaving through the trees. Every so often, she doubled back, amber eyes sharp, tail high and alert, making sure we were still there. Still breathing. For hours, no one spoke.I felt Carlin’s attention before I saw it. The subtle shift. The way his steps slowed just enough to match mine. He glanced at me from th

Chapter: One Knife, One Pan, One Problem
I woke to pain. Real, sharp, oh-my-gods-what-now pain.My body slammed against something hard with every jolt. My ribs burned. My head pounded like someone had stuffed a drum inside my skull and invited toddlers to play with sticks. A dry, dusty scent filled my nose, and was that a horse I just heard?. I also smelled sweat, and leather, and something metallic and wrong.I tried to move. Couldn’t.Someone tied my arms and legs so tightly that I could feel the ropes biting into my skin. Every time I tried to move, the burning from my bindings intensified. Panic surged fast and vicious, clawing up my throat. I took some slow, deep breaths. Panic would not help me. I forced one eye open against the blinding sunlight. I needed information if I was to make it out of this alive. When I cracked open my eye to try and take a peek at what kind of situation I was in. I noticed nothing was behind us but forest and woods. That could only mean one thing right now. I was hog-tied across the back of

Chapter: Drink or Die
We reached the clearing where Zephyrous and Evalandra were already waiting. Zeph wore his usual cool, unreadable mask; Evalandra waved excitedly at our approach,“You got it done faster than I thought,” Evalandra said, grinning. “How did the fight go with The Yale? You don't look injured?” Ev looked me up and down.“I guess I’m good,” I said, letting a little pride warm my chest. “She didn’t actually fight it.” Carlin said, bursting my false pride.“You actually didn’t fight one?” Zeph asked bluntly.“I didn’t. I took it while it slept,” I said

Chapter: Bella, Boots, and Bad Ideas
I slipped into the clearing, basket slung at my side, and began gathering tusoshary. I wasn’t sure whether to hunt down a Yale beast or search for the elusive crawling stammerwort. My decision would have to wait—first, I needed river pokeroot. The sound of rustling snapped me into the shadows, heart hammering. I knew there would be other creatures out here, but these woods were unfamiliar to me.A bark broke the silence.“Bella?”“Woof!” She tilted her head, as if asking what I was doing out here.“So this is where you’ve been running off to, girl?”“Woof!” She barked again, pleased.“Alright, but you need to be quiet. I’m hunting a Yale beast and searching for plants. Hopefully Uncle Garret won’t mind you tagging along.”Bella gave a low, dismissive growl, as if to say she didn’t care what Garret thought—she was with me. I laughed and scratched her head.“Okay then. Hunt the beast with the big horns and lead me to it. But don’t let it notice you.”With a soft bark, Bella darted away

Chapter: Hunt of the Birthday Huntress
Time dragged like molasses these past months. Camp to camp, trail to trail—always moving with Carlin and Evalandra. Evalandra was a bard who could make the rain sound poetic. We checked on supplies, trained till my muscles ached, and kept things running. All of that was useful and important, but they hadn't allowed me into the Order's secrets yet, and that gnawed at me. Every day, I pestered Carlin to let me join early. Every day, he refused. Today, though—today was different. Today was my twentieth birthday. The rules finally shifted today, in my favor.I leaped out of bed, a surge of excitement coursing through me. My hair routine was muscle memory by now: down enough to hide the scars, pulled back enough to keep it out of my eyes. Not glamorous, but efficient. I could never make it look as good as Hana did. Today I had a new mission—to harass Carlin worse than ever before.

Chapter: Falling Into Familiar Arms
Saying goodbye to Ivy was harder than I wanted to admit. But there was no changing it. We each had our own missions to handle. She was strong, clever, and resourceful. She’d survive. At least, that’s what I kept telling myself.Bella padded quietly at my side as the days blurred together. I followed whispers and tracks, chasing after Sir Garret and Carlin. Even with their direction, I always seemed to be a few steps behind. Sleep became a stolen luxury—snatched in shallow bursts beneath trees or in abandoned barns. The woods weren’t safe. The city was worse. Every time I stepped into a street, suspicion prickled over my skin. Eyes lingered too long. Who knew how many Remier had bought? Shadows felt sharper here, less like cover and more like traps. I didn’t belong among them, not hidden in alleyways with my hood pulled low.Nearly a week passed before I finally stumbled into the outskirts of the seeker camp. My knees weakened at the sight of their banners, relief flooding through me s

Chapter: 53
I slept so soundly it was strange. It took me a minute when I awoke to realize how different my life was now. I was a strange and powerful shifter, claimed by a white wolf. Vampires were real, and they were hunting me and testing me for something. Then my awful ex Chad tried to kill me to start a war of some kind. It was all just too much once I remembered it all and started thinking about it. Feeling the warmth to my back I nuzzled deeper into luka’s space. Luka groans in pleasure and pulls me in even further. I have never felt this happy and safe before. It felt amazing. It felt terrifying. But not as terrifying for what awaited me. “Morning Beautiful.” Luka’s morning voice was sexier than is normal voice, like I ever thought that was possible. He kisses me right below my ear and heat shoots down my body my stomach twists in anticipation. This was all too much. I pull away. “Sorry.” I mumble out. “Hey it’s okay, your safe. Sorry if I startled you. I thought you might b

After Alex took care of my injuries and took a vial of blood. She labeled it “Mystery Patient 21” So if anything came about it, I would be protected until she could talk to me about what it all means. The adrenaline was gone now. What remained was pain.Every step I made made my body ache. My ribs burned. My muscles trembled with exhaustion. The cuts on my arms stung beneath the bandages Alex had wrapped around them. Even breathing felt heavy.I passed everyone on my way back to my room but Luka stayed close beside me without touching me at first, like he was holding himself back on purpose.“You’re limping again,” he said quietly.“I noticed,” I muttered. His mouth twitched faintly, but the humor didn’t reach his eyes. Not after tonight. Not after almost losing me. When we reached the stairs, I stopped dead.“Nope.”Luka blinked at me.“I hate stairs now,” I informed him. A tired huff of laughter escaped him. “Fair.”Then, without another word, he bent and scooped me into his arms.

We made it back to the house in silence. To any one watching us making the trek probably thought we were something from a zombie movie and we were the zombies.“Wait? Are zombies real?” I asked the group.Everyone gasped out a “What?” out of confusion. Only Luka laughed a bit.“Not that I know of.” Luka answered. “But, anything that could be supernatural can be a possibility; it's just not always the way Hollywood makes it out to be. But there are reasons how they came up with some of the ideas.”After the last few moments later we make it back to the house where Alex was waiting with a pile of medkits. Scared and confused on why she was here I couldn’t help but burst out my confusion.“I thought you were with my mom?” I asked worry building. “What if something happens.” Alex went to open her mouth to respond but Luka cut her off before she could say anything.“I told her to come. She is the only one with medical training.” Luka explained. “Joel had Garrett and Matt Go take over just

The night air hit like cold water, sharp and real, but it didn’t slow Luka down. He had me in his arms before I fully understood we were outside, his grip unyielding, like if he loosened it even an inch I might disappear again.“Move!” Joel barked behind us. When did he get here?Branches snapped underfoot. Someone cursed. The scent of smoke and blood clung to everything, thick enough to taste. I tried to lift my head, to see where we were going, but the world tilted the second I moved.“Easy,” Luka murmured, his voice low, tight. Not calm. Never calm. “I’ve got you.”That shouldn’t have steadied me as much as it did.But it did.I let my head fall against his chest, listening to the wild, uneven rhythm of his heart. It wasn’t just fast. It was angry. Like something inside him was still fighting even though the battle was over.Except it wasn’t over. Not really. Not for us.We didn’t stop until the trees swallowed us whole.Only then did Luka slow.“Here,” Mary said, already moving, h

Silence didn’t feel like victory.Bodies cooled across the stone floor. The last echoes of the fight clung to the air, sharp and metallic, but something underneath it… lingered.Watching.I felt it before I saw it.The white wolf didn’t surge this time. She stilled.Careful.That was new. My fingers tightened in Luka’s shirt without me realizing it.“…We’re not done,” I whispered.“I know,” he replied, already turning, already searching. The flickering torchlight, casting elongated and dancing shadows along the far wall of the dimly lit chamber, seemed to possess a life of its own. These shadows, usually static and predictable, began to subtly shift. It wasn't a sudden, alarming movement, nor was there any accompanying sound to betray the change. It was a mere visual anomaly, not dramatically, not loudly but just enough to be noticed by an observant eye. A prickle of unease, perhaps, or a momentary suspension of breath. And then, as if summoned by this subtle disturbance, he stepped
