Kathe and I sat there, trying to figure out what we could do, knowing full well that we had to do something. Lucas was an alcoholic, a man who gambled away all his money, and when he won a little, he "reinvested" it in his bets and lost the few cents he won. Most importantly, he was Uncle Clark's golden boy.

"Wait... Uncle Clark wasn't at the funeral," I said, remembering how strange that had seemed to me.

"Really? That's too weird."

We checked the will over and over until we were absolutely certain it was my dad's signature. I'd seen it a thousand times; it couldn't be anything else. But that was too strange. My dad hadn't spoken to Uncle Clark in ages.

I leaned back in my chair, trying to figure out what to do in this situation, until Kathe spoke.

"Wait... If it's your father's will, they should have called you in for a reading, but they didn't."

"Right," I said, refreshing my email. "There's nothing here, no summons or anything."

"Okay... Then let's think rationally. You know your dad."

"You're right... I—" I was interrupted by a call.

"Hello?" I said, putting him on speakerphone.

"Hello, Miss Reign. This is Daniel, a board member from Connecttree. We're calling because we didn't see you online at the meeting on Friday, and we wanted to make sure everything was okay..."

"Meeting? I didn't receive any notification about anything."

"Oh, then I'll forward you an email with all the details of what was discussed at the meeting. Your uncle was there representing Olympus Enterprises, saying they would be making decisions on behalf of Olympus. I didn't contact you on Friday because I thought you were grieving and needed time."

"I understand, Mr. Daniel. Thank you for letting me know the details. May I ask why you decided to contact me?"

"We do business with you, Miss Sofia. Candace, our CEO, has been very clear about her intentions to only work with you because of your good character and because she personally closed the deal with you."

I smiled and thanked her as I hung up. I remained silent while Kathe and I looked at each other, unsure of what to do or say, but all we could do was wait for the email Daniel would send. I covered my eyes with both hands, trying not to break everything around me. I was angry.

"James Clark. That man has to have something to do with this."

"Clark... That last name..." Kathe asked.

"It's his father's last name. My dad used my grandmother's last name, Reign."

"Oh," Kathe said, with nothing more to add.

I stood up and turned to face the window, my fists clenched with a rage I hadn't felt in a long time.

"Shit, Kathe. What do I do?"

"I don't know, it's not like you can just go back to your exes," she said casually.

At that moment, I straightened up, an idea flashing through my mind, and I turned to meet Kathe's gaze. She had a hand on her chin, holding her head, and looked me in the eyes.

"Oh no," she blurted out. "No, no! Wait, I didn't mean it. You're not thinking..."

"Elias. Elias is still Roy's friend, right?" I blurted out.

"No! I mean, yeah, he is, but you can't be thinking about that jerk."

"It makes sense, doesn't it? What else can I do?"

"Don't you remember everything that happened because of that jerk?"

I sighed. I knew very well what had happened. Because of him, I lost myself, I stopped being the person I was to adapt to what he wanted, so that in the end we simply separated, under the excuse that he had family problems that affected our relationship but that he wanted to solve the problems on his own. That's the short version of the story, without wanting to dwell on the bad times.

"What other option do I have?" I said.

"God... Yes, Elias is still her friend, but I don't think he has good things to say about you."

"Oh yeah?" I said, with a silly, incredulous smile on my face.

"Sofia... Are you sure?" Kathe asked.

"Kathe, I don't have a choice... But... It never says anywhere that I have to stay married," I joked.

"God," Kathe said, tossing her hair, "marriage is serious; you can't joke about something like that."

I clenched my jaw but still smiled. I was trying to maintain what little composure I had left at that moment.

"Just... Talk to your boyfriend, please. Have him get me a moment to talk to Roy."

Kathe nodded and left. I stood there for a moment in silence, anger and helplessness building inside me. I had very few options; I couldn't just go and meet a stranger and get married. I could do that, but with men, I could never feel safe with a stranger in my home. Then I received an email from Daniel, Candace's office manager and someone I now know is on my side. It was a link to notes about the meeting I'd had on Friday, with an attached video.

"I didn't have a chance to record the meeting, and Mr. Clark didn't send us a copy. I suppose he didn't want anyone to contact you, but I've attached the security camera footage from my office, where you can hear everything that happened. I hope it helps."

I thanked Daniel and Candace. Connecttree is a company I'm interested in maintaining ties with, mainly because its ideals and decisions are based on loyalty, and Candace's motto has always been, "Not all money is good money."

I played the video in the background with my headphones on while reading the meeting summary notes. The further I read, the more I couldn't believe James's cunning. It was simply incredible. He claimed to know exactly what my father wanted, what he knew and didn't know about me, and how a woman was too unstable.

The men on the board, all former collaborators of my father, all older men with successful careers, were eager to hear this tempting offer—one that would bring them more money and less of a leading role for me. The more I watched, the angrier I got. No, by this point, I was pissed off. I finished listening to everything and reading everything and finally put my fingers to my temples, rubbing them in circles trying to calm myself down and prevent my headache from getting any worse. Everyone at that damned meeting had agreed to fulfill my father's will and unite their companies against mine, all to support Lucas, who was not going to do anything good with that money.

I slammed my fist down on the table, trying to think of an alternative plan, something else to do. At this point, I practically had no one powerful on my side. Except...

I searched through my wallet until I found the card Sebastian had given me last week. We'd only spoken briefly, but he seemed like a nice person, and more importantly, he had no contact with James.

For the next three hours, Olivia and I continued helping Ian get the place fully set up, and everything looked beautiful. It was a club in every sense of the word—comfortable, cool, and somewhat modern.Suddenly, a van pulled up outside, and Sebastian got out along with Damian. I saw Olivia tense up, and I frowned. I wasn't sure I wanted to see him there. In fact, I didn't want to see either of them, because as soon as I saw Sebastian's face, the image of us waking up together that morning was on my mind, and I had to look away.Olivia noticed, and I could see her accusing face looking at me with a wide smile. Somehow, even though we hadn't spoken much that morning, I knew she knew what had happened even better than I did, and that disturbed me.Ian greeted them with forced enthusiasm, his voice slightly trembling. "I'm glad you could come," he said, though the tension in the air made it clear that no one was truly happy to see Damian, or at least didn't fully trust him.Sebastian's g

I felt lost, I didn't know what to think about what I had just heard. And worse than that, I felt terribly bad, knowing everything Sebastian had been through, and yet my heart burned knowing that he was married and madly in love with that woman, so much so that he was willing to defy his mother and the world. The silence settled, and I was stunned. Sebastian's intense gaze only served to send shivers down my spine. As if we'd both forgotten all about civility, we continued drinking straight from the bottle, one sip after another, until it was too late and we were both too drunk to send Sebastian home.He lay down on the sofa, seemingly completely regretting everything he'd said. I felt incredibly conflicted about what was happening, especially considering my wedding was just a week away. Every day it was getting closer and closer.I went to sleep and had a dream I could barely remember.I woke up with a splitting headache and couldn't quite recall what had happened last night. I tried

I froze, with the bottle of wine in my hand and Sebastian in front of me, admitting that he was married, and that my cousin had kidnapped and sold his wife.My heart stopped, and I felt like my head was spinning. I looked at the wine bottle in my hand and took a swig straight from the bottle, hoping to make it all go faster, but it didn't. It only made me feel even more dizzy."Melissa and I got married very young," he began. "We were barely 24 when we married. We had a quiet life, for the most part, even though my mother didn't completely approve. Everything was pretty good... until it wasn't."Sebastian's POVI started talking, and once I began, I couldn't stop. Perhaps it was the wine that loosened my tongue, or perhaps it was the weight of the years that oppressed me.When Melissa and I were young, life seemed like paradise. We dreamed of growing old together, of building something that would last. But everything changed the day she met Lucas Clark at a networking event. At first,

A mixture of uncertainty filled my body, and while Sebastian and Ian headed toward Sebastian, I took two steps back, my hands still outstretched protectively toward Olivia.A thousand scenarios were playing out in my mind: how he might suddenly reveal what he knew about me, or that I was somehow involved with the Russian mafia, and all of that would go straight to Lucas and be very difficult to explain. But a fleeting thought crossed my mind: Olivia just spoke, and she just spoke in Russian... which means..."What a problem, I mistook her for someone, that's all," said Damian, with an arrogant attitude."You don't go, you point a gun at someone's face and speak to them in another language if you're not sure," retorted Ian."Where the hell do you speak Russian?" demanded Sebastian.Damian, however, said nothing more, no matter how many questions were asked of him, he simply remained as if it were something unimportant and minimized everything that had happened as a simple "mistake".Th

Ian didn't seem uncomfortable; rather, he wanted to find a way to apologize, but perhaps he didn't quite know how."She's mute due to an accident, but she's not deaf and will probably be able to speak again with enough care," I explained. My phone rang with an unknown number. "I'm going to take this," I thought.I walked away, knowing it was most likely Annatoli, while Ian and Olivia continued talking quietly."Hello?" I answered, but there was a long silence on the other end."Sofia," a voice finally said, sending shivers down my spine. "I received your email. Are you available this Saturday?""Y-yes," I said, my voice trembling with shock."I know what's happening doesn't directly involve us, so there's nothing wrong with seeing each other," Lucas said, his tone radiating distrust."Sure, after all, we're cousins," I replied.I hung up the fastest and most stressful call of my life and remained silent for a moment.I remember when we were kids, Lucas and I used to spend a lot of tim

When I arrived at the apartment, I felt a tension in my shoulders, something I couldn't quite describe at the time, but I tried not to dwell on it.As soon as I opened the door, I saw Olivia standing there. She was dressed casually in a sweater, jeans, and a hat, but her red hair still stood out.I almost felt like we were going to leave."Let me get some water, change, and then we'll go, okay?"She nodded with a smile that showed all her teeth.I got some water from the kitchen and went into the bedroom to change. As I dressed in denim shorts, a sports bra, and a crop top, I paused for a moment. Olivia had been held captive for who knows how long. How did she have almost all her teeth intact?I know there are many things she hasn't told me yet, but even so, she often makes me feel insecure.I sighed and shook off the thought; I knew I couldn't keep getting defensive about everything that was happening around me.We went outside together and I checked my phone. There were no messages

Sebastian stood up and slung his jacket over his shoulder."Do you have any idea what's going to happen next?""Well..." I said softly, "I'm going to try to get a boyfriend, and if that doesn't work out, I'll have to find another option." I added with a slight laugh."I can't believe it..." Sebasti

I started drafting an email to send him, just a formal email, letting him know I'd like to have a meeting with him. Before hitting send, I considered my options.I'll be 28 in exactly 62 days. When my father passes away, his investment and shares, which represent 30% of the total, would pass to me,

I always thought that when my dad died I would fall apart, that I would feel lost, but now here, in front of his grave, I can only feel peace. My dad was my best friend for a long time; he was my rock, and even though I can't see him again, I know he left me with the best memories any father could

The woman approached and stood between Sebastian and me. I stood there for a second, unsure how to react or what to do. The woman was shorter than me, but she had an imposing presence that made me doubt everything; she had eyes as dark as night and short black hair perfectly tied up."Ma'am, I..."
