Chapter 4

مؤلف: Yestin
Life seemed to fall back into its old rhythm.

I still lived in the apartment Chase had bought for our future together—working during the day, and heading to the hospital every evening to look after my mother.

He was busy with his new bride and barely reached out to me anymore.

Not hearing from him was, if anything, a relief.

After work, I bought a box of my mother's favorite meat pies and brought them to the hospital.

I walked into her room to find two young women already seated around her bed. I rushed forward, eager, and when they turned around, I saw it was my best friend, Olivia Carter, and Alice.

My voice came out shaking. "Olivia, why did you bring her here?"

My mother smiled at me. "Ollie was worried I'd get bored, so she brought her friend along to keep me company.

"I've never met Alice before today, but I like her already. Such a sweet, pretty girl, and her husband's out there cheating on her with some homewrecker. Disgusting.

"Alice, honey, listen to me—women like that always get what's coming to them."

Alice rose slowly to her feet and walked over to stand in front of me. She gave me a look that was all smile and no warmth, then turned back to my mother, her voice gentle and utterly merciless.

"You're right, ma'am. Homewreckers always get what's coming to them.

"So when's your daughter's turn? Oh, wait—she's already gotten hers. It just happened to land on you instead. Stage-four stomach cancer. I'd say that's a fair trade."

My mother went white as a sheet, forcing her weakened body upright to glare at Alice. "What are you talking about?"

My best friend, righteous fury written all over her face, pulled out two marriage certificates and flung them straight at my mother's face.

"Alice's not lying. Nora really is a mistress!"

"Look—Alice and Chase are already legally married. They're the real husband and wife here. Nora knows perfectly well that Chase has a wife, and she's still shamelessly living in his apartment, spending his money to cover your medical bills—money that belongs to a married couple! Alice has every right to take it back!"

June nineteenth. Her little girl's birthday.

My mother stared, frozen, at the date printed on the marriage certificate, and then coughed up a mouthful of blood.

"Mom!"

I lunged for the call button in tears, but my best friend and Alice grabbed me and held me back together.

Alice let out a cold laugh. "Your own mother just said it herself—filthy homewreckers deserve what they get. If she doesn't get punished today, you'll never learn your lesson, and you'll just keep coming after my husband!

"Good riddance if she dies. Chase's money doesn't grow on trees. Why should he have to pay for the two of you leeching off him?"

I begged my best friend to save my mother, pleading, but all I got back was a sneer of contempt.

"Best friend? I don't do best friends with filthy mistresses. Alice's my real best friend now.

"You've spent your whole life trying to one-up me—prettier than me, better grades than me, even a better boyfriend than me. That fake, holier-than-thou act of yours has always made me sick. Nobody wants your charity. Everything happening to you right now is exactly what you deserve!"

I stumbled back a step, my ears ringing.

So this whole time, everything I'd done for her, she'd seen as nothing but charity.

I'd thought we were friends. She'd always seen us as enemies.

Before I could say another word, the two of them pinned me to the ground, and I could only watch, helpless, as my mother began convulsing violently on the bed.

On the heart monitor, her pulse spiked into a frantic, jagged rhythm—then slowly flattened into a single, unbroken green line.

My mother was gone.

Something in me snapped. I wrenched myself free of their grip, grabbed the knife my mother always used to peel my apples, and lunged at the two of them.

They were going to pay for my mother's life with their own.

"Nora, have you lost your mind?!"

Chase burst through the door just in time to see the tail end of it, with none of the context.

He roared and charged at me, throwing himself between me and Alice without a shred of fear, using his own body as a shield.

A split second before the blade hit his chest, I twisted my wrist at the last possible moment.

The knife plunged into my own chest instead. Blood sprayed across Chase's face.

Chase clutched me to him, howling in agony.

"Nora!"

It was a video of Alice hanging out and chatting with a group of girlfriends. She was curled up on the couch with a Budweiser, rolling her eyes nonstop. "That idiot Olivia actually asked me for a birthday present. Like she's somebody."I only bother hanging around her to pump her for Nora's secrets. Plus, with a face and body like hers, she makes me look even better by comparison. Someone like her, my friend? Please."And Chase's best bro is broke and pathetic—born to be somebody's errand boy his whole life."And don't even get me started on his sister. Almost thirty-five and still not married, mooching off her brother like some kind of leech. Chase's money is my money—why should she get to spend a cent of it? After that day, Chase never came to see me again.Even the medical fund transfers he sent me got intercepted by Alice.Without money, I got moved from a VIP room to a standard room, then from a standard room to a shared ward. The conditions were poor, the medication was basic at best, and my body struggled to heal.A month later, the last of my savings ran out, and I had no choice but to check myself out.Running my fingers over the long, ugly dark-red scar snaking across my chest, a rage so vast it threatened to drown me welled up inside. The first thing I did after leaving the hospital was go straight to the police station to file a report."I want to report a crime. Someone stole my mother's body."The police moved fast. In under a day, they'd traced the body's whereabouts through hospital security footage. The truth had been sitting there the whole time, one phone call away, and Chase had believed Alice based on nothing but a few whispered lies. It would almost have been fu

After apologizing to the hospital director, Chase hung up the phone, his expression darkening. He pulled the still-sniffling Alice tight against him and looked at me with pure disappointment."Nora, I don't even recognize you anymore."How did you turn this vicious? Putting your own mother up to faking her death just to frame Alice—how could you even think of something so twisted?"Playing games with death like that—aren't you afraid it'll come back on you? That you'll actually curse your own mother into an early grave?"Alice cut a glance at me from the corner of her eye, the ghost of a triumphant smile tugging at her lips.My best friend, Olivia, stood with her arms crossed, looking thoroughly pleased with herself. In that moment, none of it mattered anymore—not proving myself right against Alice, not getting Chase to believe me. All I wanted to know was where my mother's body had gone.My mother's attending physician, Dr. Musk, was a man of real integrity, the kind who genui

A knock sounded at the door. Chase got up to answer it, and Alice's tearful face appeared without warning on the other side. Her eyes were red-rimmed, glistening with tears, like a wounded little rabbit.Chase's heart melted on the spot, his voice softening before he even realized it. "Alice, what are you doing here?"Alice threw herself straight into his arms. "If I hadn't come, who knows what kind of lies Nora would've spread about me by now!"Is she really telling people I killed her mother? I didn't! I swear I didn't!"I heard Nora's mother wasn't doing well, so I asked Ollie to take me to visit her."The second we got to the door, I overheard Nora talking to her mother. They were planning for Nora's mom to fake her own death and pin it on me, so you'd hate me for good and the two of them could keep control of your money..."Chase, you've been so good to them, and this is how they repay you. It made me so angry on your behalf. I stormed into the room to confront her, and the

When I woke, the pain in my chest was so sharp it felt like the wound might tear open again if I so much as moved.I forced myself to sit up. Chase, keeping watch at my bedside, rushed to steady me. "Nora, just tell me what you need, and I'll take care of it. The wound hasn't scarred over yet—moving around will only hurt you."He adjusted the hospital bed to a more comfortable angle, settling me in, then made a call to the office. "Nora's hurt. I don't trust a hired nurse to look after her properly. I need to be here myself. Leo, I'm not coming in for the next few days. Sorry to ask, but I need you and the other managers to hold things down."I had no interest in whatever Chase was saying. All I wanted to know was how my mother was doing. Had they managed to save her?I gritted through the pain in my chest and tried to force myself upright. That was when the door burst open, and Dr. Larry Musk, my mother's attending physician, stormed in, his face dark with anger."How many time
