(KAIRA'S POV)

The large iron gates opened, and I felt the familiar weight of panic settle behind my ribs. I pressed my sweaty palms against the expensive leather while my body stiffened in the backseat.

I wanted to close my eyes but somehow I couldn't. I sat, like a programmed robot, and watched as the car drove into the Horton estate, my first time taking the main gates instead of the staff' entrance.

It was a reminder that things had taken an impossibly different turn.

I've spent the last four years avoiding Slade Horton with every fiber of my being.

And now, after the bombshell of my mum and his dad, I discover that I will be forced to live in the same house with him.

We are about to become siblings.

My bully as my stepbrother?

"We don't have to go on with it. You are my priority, so if you don't want this, then I won't do it," Mum had said to me after she watched me turn into a ghost as I processed the news.

Of course I wasn't in support of the marriage. But Mum has sacrificed her life for me. I would be a brat not to support her. So I shoved all my feelings down like a big girl, told her I was happy for her and that we could move whenever she wanted.

I didn’t expect it to be so soon, still. But turns out Tom wanted us to move in immediately.

Two hours later, with hidden tears and my belongings, we were being driven through the best roads, perfectly trimmed hedges and trees.

Tom Horton stood, at a large water fountain that reminded me of my fear for water when I looked a second longer.

The car door opened and my heart started pounding in my chest.

This was really happening.

"Are you alright?" Mum's soft voice made me turn to her. Her eyes bore guilt, the same guilt they had been wearing from the beginning. .

"Yes. I'm fine," I lied.

I wasn't, but there was not much I could do. Mum got out first and then helped me out too.

Tom appeared in front of us in no time, wearing a warm smile on his face as he stared at Mum.

"Hi," he greeted her softly.

"Hi," Mum greeted him back. I noticed the faint blush on her neck and my hands grasped each other.

It was a surprise that instead of getting lost in a bubble, Tom turned to me, a funny look now settling on his face.

"Hi Kaira. How are you?" He asked, and he sounded different from the regular Mr. Horton I was used to. Less warm and friendly, more nervous and uncertain.

"I'm fine, sir."

"I'm sorry about… this whole change. I hope you understand that your mum and I don't want to rush you into this." He spoke so calmly that I almost believed him.

"Yeah," was all I said. All I could say.

He held my eyes like he wanted to say more, but then he turned to Mum and I can swear that I noticed them exchange eye contact.

"So," he said, beginning to lead us toward the house. "Why don't we all come in and get settled? There's chocolate cake coming up soon. We can eat that and wait for dinner." He threw a wink at me. "Kaira, your mum told me about how much you love spaghetti and meatballs. I hope the chef does justice. I want you to have the perfect welcome home meal."

My stomach clenched at the words "welcome home," but Mum glanced expectantly at me and I forced a tiny smile onto my lips while I muttered, "Thank you."

They had no idea that my legs were trembling as we climbed. They had no idea that I was struggling to breathe as the giant front doors were opened and as we passed through.

A wave of relief washed over me when I was welcomed by the empty hallway.

He's not here. Maybe he isn't home. That would be perfect. It'll give me a couple of—

"Welcome. I really hope you love it," Tom said. His warm smile had returned as his eyes lingered more on Mum.

"Your home is beautiful," Mum said softly, as she marveled at the art pieces and portraits hung at strategic points in the house.

"Our home, dear," Tom corrected, and another exchanged glance between him and Mum did not go unnoticed.

Then he turned to me and that guilty look came on again.

"I hope you like it, Kaira," he asked. I wasn't paying attention to anything as we walked but I nodded at him.

"It's nice," I added even though what I really wanted to say was ‘Gee thanks. I always dreamed of moving into the house where my bully lives.

Tom smiled and then surprised me by getting in between Mum and I. He took both our hands in his, just as a pair of workers opened another set of doors after a bow.

"Shanice, Kaira." He glanced at Mum, then, me. I was already looking up at him.

"I want you both to formally meet my son, Slade."

My body froze immediately and I felt suffocated. Tom was staring ahead now and even though I didn't want to, my gaze followed his.

I could still hear Tom speaking but I couldn't make out words. He tugged me along so that my heavy legs moved forward and my eyes fixated on the same pair of emerald eyes that had mockingly watched me this morning and humiliated me. My lungs forgot how to work.

Slade Horton towered over me like a beautiful nightmare.

His silky looking hair, perfectly combed; his unfairly handsome face, placed in his usual strict expression. He wore a black leather jacket over a white t-shirt that contrasted his dark hair and his inky tattoos peeking from his neck and chiseled chest. A silver neck chain rested perfectly in place.

I wasn't supposed to feel lightheaded; I thought I had prepared myself. But clearly not.

As for Slade, the shock was clear. A glass in his hand slipped to the ground and shattered noisily. For one terrifying second, his mask disappeared, a second time for me.

"Good evening," He greeted.

Cold. Smooth. Composed. Like he didn’t just drop a glass.

I swallowed a lump and muttered inaudible words while his eyes imprisoned me to the spot.

"Slade, can you give Kaira a tour of the garden lake house while someone cleans this mess?" Tom turned to me an apologetic smile on his face. “I know how much you love flowers Kaira, your mum talks about it all the time.”

I swallowed a heavy lump in my throat.

No. Let him say no.

Things are bad enough as it is!

"Of course," Slade answered. "It will be my pleasure."

And for a split second, I thought I saw a tiny smirk flash across his lips.

  • A Bully For A StepBrother.    The Morning After.

(KAIRA'S POV)I woke up to sunlight streaming through my window and the faint smell of something floral—probably from the garden outside. For a moment, I just lay there, blinking at the ceiling, trying to remember why I felt so... light. Then the memories came flooding back.Slade's lips on mine. His hands in my hair. The way he had held me like I was something precious.I smiled, hugging my pillow to my chest. But when I turned over, the other side of the bed was empty. Cold. He had left sometime during the night. My heart sank slightly.I knew it was silly to be disappointed. He couldn't have stayed all night anyway—what if someone had seen? What if the staff had talked? But still, a small part of me had hoped to wake up in his arms.I sat up, running my fingers through my tangled hair. “It’s probably for the better.” I morning voice said ti me but I tried to fight the insecurity I felt. I felt very scared.Scared that yesterday had been like the other days. One of Slade Horton’s

  • A Bully For A StepBrother.    I See Everything.

(KAIRA'S POV)We pulled apart slowly, reluctantly, like neither of us wanted to break the spell. His forehead stayed pressed against mine, his breath warm on my lips. I could feel his heart pounding through his chest, or maybe that was mine. It was hard to tell where he ended and I began."Wow," I whispered.A low chuckle escaped him. "Yeah. Wow."I opened my eyes and found him already looking at me. His gaze was softer now, less guarded. Like he had let down a wall I didn't even know existed."Come here," he murmured, pulling me gently toward my bed.I didn't resist. I let him guide me to sit down on the edge, and he settled beside me, close enough that our shoulders brushed. The warmth of him seeped into me, comforting and electric at the same time."Are you okay?" I asked again, reaching up to touch the cut above his eyebrow."It's just a scratch.""Your knuckles don't look like 'just a scratch.'"He glanced down at his bruised hands, flexing his fingers. "I've had worse.""From wh

  • A Bully For A StepBrother.    Melting The Ice.

(KAIRA'S POV)I didn't know what I was doing. One moment I was lying in bed, staring at the ceiling, replaying the events of the day over and over in my head. The next moment, I was standing in my doorway, staring at Slade like he was the answer to every question I hadn't asked. He looked different. His hair was damp, clinging to his forehead in messy strands. There was a cut above his eyebrow, fresh and angry, and his knuckles were bruised and raw. He was still wearing that black t-shirt, the fabric stretched across his shoulders, and I could see the tension coiled in every muscle. He looked like he had been fighting. And that really worried me. "Come in."The words left my mouth before I could stop them. I didn't know what I was inviting. I didn't know if this was a good idea. But I couldn't stand the thought of him walking away again. Not tonight. He stepped inside, his presence filling the small space instantly. My room suddenly felt smaller, warmer, charged with something I coul

  • A Bully For A StepBrother.    Come In.

(SLADE'S POV)I didn't wait for her response. I couldn't. If I stood there any longer, I would have said something stupid. Something like 'please just accept the damn gift' or worse, 'I only want to take care of you.'Instead, I walked to my room with long, heavy strides, my heart pounding in my chest. I slammed the door behind me and leaned against it, closing my eyes. The image of Makaira's face when I slammed that plank down flashed in my mind. The fear in her eyes. The tears streaming down her cheeks. She had looked at me like I was a stranger. Like I was someone to be afraid of.And maybe she was right to be afraid. But I couldn't help it. When I saw those bastards touching her, something inside me snapped. A darkness I didn't even know existed rose up and took control. All I could think about was making them pay. Making them suffer for even daring to lay a finger on her.I pushed off the door and walked to my bathroom, turning on the cold water. I stripped off my shirt and stare

  • A Bully For A StepBrother.    The Strangest Reason.

(SLADE'S POV)The silence in the car was deafening. And I told myself it was for the best. Because one word and I would have gone back there to create permanent changes in the lives of those cursed bastards! My heart started racing so I had to take in a deep breath and remind myself that Makaira was okay, she was safe.Terrified of me after watching me be so violent but she's not in danger anymore. Hopefully she knows that.It boils my blood to think of what could have happened if I had not shown up on time.My fists tightened on the steering wheel. I stole a glance at Makaira. She was still in the same position she had been since the car started moving. Head against the window and eyes glued to it.Each time, I told myself that I would try hard not to look at her. But then again, I found myself helplessly losing.Besides, seeing her was like throwing a blanket of comfort over me even though she wasn't looking directly at me.The drive felt endless. Every second stretched into an eter

(KAIRA'S POV)I watched the car drive off, feeling like it was leaving with a huge chunk of my heart.I could still smell Slade around me and maybe that's why I didn't want to move. It helped me jog back, helped me replay the way his eyes looked sad, so sad that it was hard to believe that those eyes belonged to him.So I stood there for some seconds and then steadied my books with my knee, before walking out of the parking lot.I thought I would feel even better than I felt after he left. But my emotions had a decline. I had told him off, for the second time today. It felt like I was winning for once by getting to turn him down and oh it felt so good to tell him I didn't want his help. The same feeling I got when I told him in the lab that he caused everything. But then, just like the time before that, there was some kind of guttural feeling that came with it. My tummy hurt and I didn't want any more flashbacks."He couldn't even give a proper apology! Because he doesn't want to apol
