Chapter 5

Autor: Eternity
“You’ve really decided to go to Vescari?”

Lorenzo asked it quietly.

I sat across from him in his study, the burn on my back aching, my knee wrapped in gauze. After leaving Serena’s guest house, I had locked myself in my room for two days. The meals outside my door went cold untouched.

“The Vescari men are already in the city.” His eyes were red. “Once your name is submitted, the marriage contract takes effect. If you regret this, there is still time.”

I tried to smile.

“There’s nothing to regret.”

Lorenzo’s throat moved. At last, he pushed the papers across the desk.

“Then you leave tonight. Blackharbor’s winter storms can close the harbor any day. They won’t wait until the third day. The public list will still be announced tomorrow, but the storm has forced Vescari to move the convoy forward.”

I signed my name. In the quiet room, the scrape of the pen sounded almost cruel.

Before every Vescari selection, no unmarried woman on the East Coast slept well. Blackharbor was too far, too cold, and too hard to escape. Women who entered that house rarely left by choice.

By evening, everyone knew I had gone to Lorenzo myself.

So they came.

Matteo was the first to enter, anger heavy on his face.

“Aria, what did you say to Lorenzo this time?”

Adrian followed. His eyes swept over my half-packed suitcase, the documents, and the old wooden box by my bed. His gaze paused on the suitcase, but Matteo’s accusation came first, and none of them asked why it was open. Dante came in last and stayed by the door, watching me in silence.

Once, I would have rushed to explain. Now I only put my medicine and papers into the suitcase.

Matteo’s voice dropped.

“Are you trying to send Serena to Vescari in your place?”

I closed the suitcase and looked up.

“What do you think?”

His expression changed.

Adrian stepped closer, his voice soft in that familiar way.

“Aria, tell us clearly. What did you ask Lorenzo for?”

I looked at him for a long moment.

If I told them I was leaving, would they believe me? If they knew tonight was my last night in Vittori, would anyone ask me to stay?

The answer came too quickly.

“You guessed right.”

The room went cold.

I stood with one hand on the desk.

“I’m jealous of Serena, and I hate her. She took all of you from me, so of course I want her gone.”

Adrian frowned. “Aria…”

I cut him off.

“I begged Lorenzo to put her name on the marriage list. As long as she stays here, I’ll keep making trouble and tearing Vittori apart.”

Matteo’s eyes turned sharp.

“You wouldn’t dare.”

“Why not?” I gave a small laugh. “Lorenzo has spoiled me since I was a child. Isn’t that what you always say? I’m selfish, willful, and I think I can do anything because my brother protects me.”

Dante finally spoke.

“Lorenzo won’t send Serena to Blackharbor just because you asked.”

I looked at him and kept my voice steady.

“Then wait for tomorrow.”

They stared at me as if I had become exactly what they believed I was. Matteo left first, slamming the door. Adrian followed after a short silence. Dante was the last to go. His gaze paused on my suitcase, as if he wanted to say something, but he only turned away.

When their footsteps disappeared, I opened the old wooden box.

Inside were the things they had once given me: Dante’s cufflinks, Matteo’s silver dagger, and the small key Adrian had said belonged to a house he would one day give me.

I closed the box and left all of it behind.

Downstairs, Lorenzo waited beside a black sedan in the rain. He put a heavy coat over my shoulders and handed me a packed bag.

“Medicine, documents, cash, and a new phone,” he said hoarsely. “When you reach Blackharbor, don’t endure everything alone. If anyone hurts you, call me. However far it is, I’ll come get you.”

I nodded and held the bag tight.

Before getting into the car, I looked back at Vittori once. The training ground lights were still on. The docks were dark under the rain, while Serena’s guest house glowed warmly, as if everyone had gathered there.

I did not look again.

Lorenzo closed the door. The car drove out of the estate, and the wipers cut the place where I had grown up into broken shadows.

Soon, they would know whose name was on the list.

The next morning, I met them in the old sitting room.Roman walked me to the door but did not enter. He said he would wait at the end of the corridor. Inside, Dante, Matteo, and Adrian stood beside the table, where the wooden box I had left behind had been placed.Dante spoke first.“I saw your suitcase that night. I knew you were packing, yet I still decided you were trying to hurt Serena. Every word I said pushed you to confess to something you had never done.”He took the auction invitation from his pocket. The note on the back was still clear.A birthday gift for Lorenzo.“I thought you wanted me there because you were bored. After you left, I learned you had gone to choose a gift for your brother.”“Aria, I’m sorry.”I turned to Matteo. His shoulder was still bandaged.“I found out what happened with the coffee,” he said. “The boy attacked you first. You never touched him.”He looked down at his right hand.“I did not ask what happened or look at your injuries. I grabbed your thro

The attack began at two in the morning. The alarm in the Vittori estate had barely sounded when an explosion tore through the eastern warehouse. The rival family cut the estate’s power and sent vehicles toward the western entrance, which meant they had obtained Vittori’s port-defense plans.Dante activated the backup system while Roman opened the surveillance map.“There’s an insider at the west gate,” Dante said. “I’ll take a team.”“They want you to leave the main house.” I pointed to the surveillance map. “Their real target is the port control room.”Dante studied the screens. The vehicles at the west gate were making plenty of noise, while the area around the control room was unnaturally quiet. He immediately redirected the main security force east.Matteo had already gone to the warehouse. Gunfire soon came through the radio. Two ambush teams had surrounded his men near the entrance.“Give me a car.” I stood. “There’s an old freight route behind the warehouse. It reaches the north

The rain had just stopped when the Vescari convoy entered the Vittori estate.Black sedans pulled up in front of the main house, where Dante was waiting with the security team. Matteo and Adrian stood behind him, neither moving forward.Roman stepped out first. After checking the guards and the surrounding grounds, he turned and offered me his hand. I took it and used his arm for support as I left the car.Dante had already approached the door, but he stopped when Roman placed a hand around my waist.Five months had passed, yet when he looked at me, he could not seem to find a single word.I wore a loose black dress beneath my coat, hiding most of the change in my body. Roman’s hand, however, remained near my stomach. Adrian noticed almost immediately.“You’re pregnant?”“A little over two months.”Roman pulled my coat closed, shielding me from the cold air left behind by the rain.Matteo stepped forward.“Was the journey difficult? I’ll have someone take you to your room.”When he rea

Five months later, I could chair Vescari’s port meetings on my own.Blackharbor’s winter was still brutal, but Roman had placed the eastern routes under my control. Even men who had served Vescari for years were expected to follow my decisions. That morning, a southern merchant demanded higher transit fees and tried to bypass me by addressing Roman directly.Roman sat at the other end of the table.“This route belongs to Aria.”The merchant pushed the contract toward me and let his hand drift toward my wrist. Roman caught it and pinned him against the table.“You may touch the contract. Not her.”The room went silent.I pulled the papers free and crossed out the revised price.“The fee stays the same. Refuse, and Vescari gives the cargo space to someone else.”The merchant looked to Roman.Roman released him and leaned back.“She was clear.”The agreement was signed on my terms.Afterward, I dropped the file in front of Roman.“You nearly broke his hand.”“He touched you.”“He was movi

Vittori EstateThree days after Aria left, Dante entered her room. The curtains were closed, and the white roses in the crystal vase had long since withered. Once, the three of them used to compete over who would replace them first. Later, all their attention shifted to Serena, and no one noticed how empty the room had become.Only a few old invitations remained in the wooden box. Dante picked one up and recognized the auction he had abandoned at the last minute. Serena had been injured at the training ground, so he left Aria and rushed to her. When he returned, he even accused Aria of being unreasonable. On the back of the invitation, Aria had written:A birthday gift for Lorenzo.Dante folded it and slipped it into his pocket. At the same time, Adrian had the private line beside Aria’s bed inspected. The technician quickly found the final call record.“She pressed it once before she left, but your number never answered.”The time matched the night Aria ran through the rain to the gue

By the time the convoy entered Blackharbor, night had already fallen. The northern port was buried under snow, its lights reduced to blurred lines in the storm. There were no shops along the road, no civilians in sight. The moment the Vescari cars passed the checkpoint, the iron gate locked behind us.I leaned against the back seat, every turn pulling at the burn across my back. Blood had started seeping through the bandage on my knee again. The doctor traveling with us asked twice to stop, but the convoy leader refused.“The Don is waiting.”We finally reached a seaside estate. Two rows of armed guards stood along the steps. When the door opened, a man approached and reached for me.“Don’t touch her.”The voice came from above. The man withdrew his hand at once.I looked up and saw Roman Vescari. He wore a black overcoat and stood in the snow with no guard daring to come too close. According to every story I had heard, Roman had taken control of Vescari, eliminated three rebellious br
