Chapter 2

Author: Cat Cafe
The future Brent's chuckle came through the line. "Zoe made it out safely, right? Madelin must be thrilled."

My voice was barely a whisper. "Juliet is dead. Because you led me to save Zoe instead."

The line went silent, but then Brent let out a dismissive laugh. "How is that possible? In my timeline, Juliet is currently locked away in a behavioral reform facility. If anything happened, the wardens would have called me."

A shiver ran down my spine. "What did you just say? Why on earth would you put her in a place like that?"

"Because you spoiled her rotten," he said indifferently. "She grew up fighting with Madelin constantly, becoming rebellious and vicious. But since you saved Zoe, I'll consider pulling her out this month."

Terrified that altering the present might inadvertently worsen my daughter's future fate, I swallowed my pride and begged, "Can you go get her now?"

He gave a low, patronizing hum. "That depends on your performance."

The implicit threat in his voice cut through the static. Sure enough, his very next words stripped away any remaining illusion of safety.

"If you don't behave, I might just stop covering your parents' medical bills."

"What?"

"Oh, you don't know yet, do you? Your dad had a heart attack after he found out I was cheating. Your mom is a vegetable because Madelin hit her with a car. So, don't make a scene, or things will end up just like that."

I lost my mind, screaming into the receiver. "You're a monster! If you don't love me, why won't you just divorce me?"

He listened to my hysterical breakdown with a terrifying calm. "If I had heard you say those words five years ago, it would have broken my heart. Now? I feel nothing."

He hung up the phone, and I collapsed onto the floor, feeling completely powerless in the face of a predatory future.

The only thing I could do now was protect my parents. That same night, I bought two emergency plane tickets and sent them back to our hometown.

Once they were safely in the air, I texted Brent: [Let's set a time to finalize the divorce.]

At first, he ignored the message entirely, assuming it was just another tantrum. But the moment I sent over the formal paperwork, he finally came to find me—only to tear the divorce agreement to shreds right in front of me.

"What kind of sick joke is this?" he snarled, throwing the shredded remnants into my face. "You want to throw our marriage away just because I stepped up to care for a late friend's grieving widow? Is a living person not more important than your petty, jealous grudges?"

I let out a bitter, mocking laugh. "You're right. I do hold a grudge. I hate Madelin, and I despise you."

His eyes flickered with profound disappointment. "When did you become so unreasonable? I should have never saved you back in high school."

My tear ducts had dried up hours ago, but those words cut deep, making my eyes sting again.

Back in high school, when a group of thugs cornered me in an alley, Brent charged in with an iron rod to fight them off.

And later, when the trauma left me suicidal, he had cupped my face in his palms, swearing, "That doesn't change a thing. I will love you forever."

He never once complained about my insecurities. Every day, he left me love notes and small surprises. But after Madelin appeared, the notes stopped, and all his patience went to her.

Now, one call from her was enough to calm his anger.

"I'm not divorcing you. Calm down by yourself," he said before leaving again.

Soon after, the future Brent called again. Before he could speak, I said sarcastically, "Your past self just told me he regretted saving me back in high school."

The line remained silent for a few heavy seconds. Then, his voice came through, as gentle as always. "Don't listen to him. Whether he regrets it or not, I would still make the same choice to save you.

"After all, Madelin hired those thugs to teach you a lesson. I stepped in because I couldn't let her commit a real crime."

With the revelation, a crushing pain squeezed my heart.

Everything finally made sense. It wasn't a sudden change of heart; I was never the love of his life—just an obstacle in his and Madelin's love story.

Nearly ten years of his supposed devotion had been nothing but a lie.

I shook my head, mercilessly stripping away the final vestige of hope he had left—just as he had once done to me.Brent's face turned deathly pale."I'll have the divorce agreement sent to you," I said flatly. As soon as I walked through the door, my phone rang. Assuming it was a customer from the flower shop, I answered and said hello, but only silence met my ears.Just as I was about to press end, a raspy voice bled through the speaker. It wasn't the young Brent I had just left on the street.I never expected the future Brent to call me again. "Valerie, why won't you forgive him?"Having detached myself from my old emotions, I was unusually clear-headed. I turned the question back on him."You're desperate for your younger self to fix things because five years from now, I refuse to grant you forgiveness, don't I?"A hollow laugh echoed from the receiver, dripping with deep sorrow. "You're as brilliant as ever. Then you must know that everything I've done was an attempt to win

Brent eventually tracked me down using the digital footprint of the bank transfers I routinely made to support my parents. One afternoon, just as I finished wrapping a bouquet, the flower shop owner tapped my shoulder and pointed toward the window.Brent stood across the street like a looming shadow. The moment our eyes locked, he ignored the rushing traffic and darted over toward me.A deep frown creased my forehead, my expression carrying nothing but irritation. The shop owner quietly took the flowers from my hands. "I heard this guy from out of town has been looking for you the past couple of days. He looks like trouble, dear. Why don't you head home through the back door?"I thanked her gratefully and slipped out. But I had barely walked a few paces down the alley when Brent's trembling fingers clamped around my wrist.I let out a weary sigh and turned to face him. "I did what you asked. What else do you want?"His eyes were bloodshot. "No, that's not what I wanted. I'm so s

Once Madelin and Zoe were sent away, the large apartment felt hollow.Brent woke up in the middle of the night, staring at the vacant spot beside him in bed. He wandered into the kitchen, his footsteps echoing sharply in the silent space.Every lingering trace of Juliet and me was rapidly evaporating from the house. He sat down, burying his face in his hands as a violent headache throbbed behind his eyes. His phone began to vibrate. It was his future self.He almost hung up in irritation, but the voice on the other end cut straight to the point. "Have you gone to see Valerie's parents yet?"Brent paused, and his future self continued, "Go find them. Valerie listened to me before because I threatened her with her parents' safety. I ruined their lives. Tell them I'm sorry."The line went dead.Clinging to this fragile sliver of hope, Brent immediately booked a flight to my hometown. Before heading to the airport, he stood before Juliet's remembrance shrine, his fingers gently tra

Brent mobilized every resource at his disposal to track me down. But because of the clarification video, I was being viciously torn apart across the internet, making the search even more difficult. The only lead he found was a snippet of surveillance footage near the collapsed shopping mall. In the video, I looked hollowed out, as if a sudden gust of wind could blow me away. The heavy bag of candles on my shoulder seemed to weigh me down. The scene filled Brent with a deep fear that I no longer had an anchor tying me to this world."Why was she carrying those candles?" he asked hoarsely. His assistant quietly reminded him, "Sir, she went to mourn your daughter."Brent's mind went blank, and he couldn't utter a word. Reaching up to touch his face, his fingertips came away wet.He had been emotionally detached his entire life, unable to weep even when facing raw tragedy. But now, he felt the agonizing, bone-deep pain of losing his daughter—a daughter who hadn't even left any ashes

"I only told you to keep her locked down to ensure she stayed compliant after the miscarriage!" the future Brent snapped, frustration bleeding through the line. "Who the hell told you to go off-script and do whatever you did over there?"Brent couldn't help but recall his recent actions, a wave of defensive irritability washing over him. On the other end of the line, the voice from five years later was unraveling as control slipped away."She shouldn't have been able to escape me," the future Brent muttered. "Your timeline must be fracturing into mine."Brent's brows knitted together. "You told me before that my timeline couldn't rewrite yours."The man on the other end exhaled sharply, forcing himself to calm down. "Everything had remained the same. Who could have guessed that she would be the one to shatter the sequence?"Sensing the panic in his future self's voice, Brent felt a sudden weight settle in his stomach. "What about Juliet? Is she still there?"The man on the other

Brent jerked his hand back as if burned. "What are you talking about? That's impossible. I wasn't even at the site.""It was you from five years in the future," I revealed.Brent let out a mocking laugh. "Come on, even if you don't want to take responsibility for what happened, you don't need to invent such a ridiculous lie."I gave a hollow smile. "If it really was you who caused Juliet's death, what would you do?"He looked me straight in the eyes, making sure I heard every syllable. "I would never do that."I looked away at a withered tree outside the window. "I wish that were true."Brent kept me locked inside that hospital room. Unless I agreed to clear Madelin's name, I wasn't allowed to leave.I tried to resist. But when I went on a hunger strike, Brent had nurses force a feeding tube down my throat. When I tried to speak out online, he cut off my communication with my parents. The surveillance camera in the corner blinked day and night, its red light glaring at me like
