Chapter 3

Author: Venmo Me 50
Artie’s toys had all been made by both his grandfathers.

His clothes were always mended with patches whenever they tore.

Even when I suggested buying him one of those navy-striped shirts every child in the military compound seemed to own, Artie would shake his head vigorously.

“Mom, I’ve still got clothes to wear. Dad works so hard to earn money. I don’t want a new one.”

It wasn’t until this year, when he was finally about to start school, that he came to me with his face flushed and whispered, “Mom, on my first day of school, can I wear a new shirt without any patches?”

The memory made the corners of my lips curl into a faint smile.

At the same time, a tear fell onto the needle and thread in my hands.

I quickly wiped it away and kept on sewing.

I owed this much to Artie. I simply must make it for him.

At eight o’clock that evening, Logan finally came home.

He was wearing the military uniform that was Artie’s favorite. He was carrying a pink floral-patterned tote bag.

Upon seeing me, he casually tossed the bag into my arms and instructed, “These clothes piled up while Jenny was in the hospital. Wash them for her tonight.

“Her skin’s delicate. She can’t do heavy chores like this.”

I almost laughed, amused at why he was so considerate of his first love yet expected me, his wife, to shoulder the burden.

Just as I was about to refuse, Logan spoke again.

“Where’s Artie? Isn’t he home?”

He glanced around the unnaturally quiet house, puzzled.

My fingers holding the sewing needle turned pale.

I was searching for an excuse when he ordered again, “Since Artie’s not here, go and pack a few of his clothes for me to take to Jenny.

“She has just returned from Anngreen with her kid and doesn’t have enough changes of clothes, so she can borrow Artie’s for the time being.”

Seeing that I hadn’t responded, Logan clicked his tongue and walked straight into our son’s room.

He brought out every neatly folded piece of clothing.

As he sorted through them, he frowned at each one.

“This isn’t new enough.

“This fabric’s too rough.

“And this one, why are there so many patches?”

All the clothes he’d never spared a second glance at now suddenly had flaws everywhere he looked.

None of them was good enough for Jenny’s child.

It felt as though my heart had been torn open. Instinctively, I hid the unfinished garment behind my back.

This didn’t escape the man’s notice.

“You made our son a new outfit? Let me see.”

Before I could react, he forcefully snatched it from my hands.

The needle tip scraped across my palm, leaving a thin, bloody cut.

I gasped from the sting.

Logan, however, was already grinning from ear to ear.

“This is nice! Jenny and the kid will certainly love it!”

“No!”

I cried out and lunged forward, shoving him away with all my might.

“I made this for Artie. You can’t take it!”

Logan staggered a step back, his expression turning grim in an instant.

“It’s just a piece of clothing, isn’t it? It’s not like it’s anything special. Why are you being so petty!”

I reached for it again, but the man finally snapped. He pulled two bills from his pocket and flung them onto the floor.

“Treat it as if I’m buying it from you, all right? Now get out of my way!

“If you try to take it back again, I’ll tear it, and no one will be able to wear it!”

Seeing he wasn’t bluffing, I slowly clenched my fists until my knuckles turned white.

After a long silence, I opened the drawer and took out the application for cremation.

“I’m taking Artie back to our hometown in a few days. Please sign this letter of authorization.”

The rain poured heavier, but the figure at the gate refused to leave.Logan’s heart-wrenching cries echoed through the night alongside the sound of the rain, yet I did not yield in the slightest.Whatever I had felt for him had already been completely worn away the moment our son left this world. In the days that followed, he stayed far outside the courtyard, watching the mourning hall from a distance as he cried.Even when the neighbors tried to speak for him, I never let him take a single step closer.“Artie, I will fulfill your last wish.”I cut down the plum tree in the yard and threw it out by the roadside in front of Logan. The fruit was scattered across the ground. With bloodshot eyes, Logan left this place that very night.Half a year later. From the school in the countryside came the clear sound of children reciting, “The gingham dog and the calico cat, side by side on the table sat…”Following the familiar voice, Logan looked up and saw me standing at the podium wit

Back inside, Logan sat with his back against the door. The faintest trace of guilt that had just surfaced in him disappeared in an instant. He clutched his head in disbelief. He couldn’t believe he had, for a woman like that, kept hurting his wife and child over and over again. He lowered his head and stayed silent, like a stone statue, completely buried under the weight of guilt. The next day, he packed some meat, rice, and flour into a backpack and prepared to take a ride back home when Jenny suddenly rushed out.At school, Tommy had snatched another child’s new school bag and even threatened that anyone who reported him would get their teeth knocked out.No one at this new school was going to put up with such behavior, and the other children took turns recounting the incident in detail. The teacher immediately decided that the parents must take Tommy away. The school would no longer accept him. Upon hearing this, Jenny rushed to Logan, hoping he could use his position to hus

Even inside that windowless, airless room, time had slipped away from him.Logan had already promised Tommy he would show up at the school opening ceremony. Just a brief appearance would be enough to keep the boy from being looked down upon by the other children.“Logan, it’s Tommy’s first day of school this afternoon. You said you’d take him there.”Logan pressed his aching temples. Sunlight leaked through the window crack and landed on his face, forcing him to squint. The dream he had just woken from was so beautiful he almost wanted to stay in it. The knocking that broke it, though, only irritated him.He pushed himself up, ran a dry hand over his face, and went to open the door.He was met immediately with Jenny’s pleading eyes.“Sorry, Jenny. I can’t go with you today.”She looked at him, confused and innocent.“But… you already promised Tommy today…”Logan rubbed his nose bridge and exhaled.“Artie is gone. I’m not in the mood.”A hint of displeasure flashed through J

“Willow, I really know I was wrong. Please, can you give me another chance?“I really don't want to lose you.“It was all my fault. I'm a bastard. You can hit me, curse me—whatever you want. Just don't leave, please?”Logan had always been an intensely proud man.I'd rarely seen him lower himself like this.Instead of feeling touched or sorry for him, I only found it laughable.I sighed.“Logan, I've already filed for divorce. Let's stop holding on to each other."“No! I don’t want that!”He shook his head and refused to let go of my hand.I looked at his grief with cold, detached eyes. It stirred nothing in me.The station began broadcasting that the train would soon depart.I instinctively glanced toward the platform. The moment I did, Logan grew visibly more anxious. As though he believed that if he loosened his grip for even a second, I would disappear forever.Seeing that he still refused to let go, an idea suddenly came to me.I pointed behind him and shouted, “Je

I picked up my luggage, took one last look at the home I was leaving behind, and turned away. There was only one shuttle bus running between the military compound and the train station. When we had come here, Artie sat beside me, looking everywhere with wide-eyed curiosity.Like a happy little bird, he had chattered the entire journey. Now, the ride back was unnaturally quiet.I sat in the same seat as before, with only a school bag for company on the empty seat beside me.The driver glanced at me several times through the rearview mirror. In the end, he couldn't help asking, “Heading home for something this time? Why didn't your boy come with you?”I looked at the school bag beside me and answered quietly, “He’s here.”The rumble of the engine and the screech of the tires swallowed my words. The driver kept talking.“I've driven plenty of children, but that little guy left the deepest impression on me.“He was such a lively, lovable kid. The moment he got on, he started ha

“Why? I worked so hard to earn military honors so you could have a better life. Why weren’t you happy?”I shook my head with a scoff.“A better life? What does that even mean? Have you ever asked what Artie and I truly wanted?”Logan held his gaze on me, something unfathomable flickering in his eyes. “I’ve never let either of you go without food, clothes, or a roof over your heads. What else could you possibly want?”The corners of my lips lifted faintly as I looked out to the sky beyond the door. My mind drifted for a moment.“Back when Artie and I still lived in the countryside, we had very little, even having to split a single flatbread in half. But we were content.“His favorite thing at that time was sitting with me in the yard, watching the plum tree you’d planted by the wall, and counting how many plums it bore.“Whenever he saw the plum blossoms, he’d be overjoyed for ages. He’d run after me and said that when the tree’s full of fruit, it means you’ll be coming home.
