Chapter 2

Author: Lunar Flame
When Joseph finally woke from his drunken stupor, he found himself in a luxurious king-sized bed in a hotel room. He was completely naked under the covers, and from the mess all around, he'd definitely gotten down and dirty.

His head buzzed as he tried to piece together last night's events. After finding out about Cora's betrayal, he'd chosen to drink himself senseless at a bar because he hadn't wanted to go home and face her. Everything after that was a blank.

He'd totally blacked out.

Had he actually slept with some woman from the bar? Then he'd cheated, too. How was he any different from Cora?

No, it wasn't the same. He was already planning to divorce her, so there was nothing between them anymore. From now on, how he lived was his own business!

Joseph grasped at that flimsy justification and tried to sit up. However, a sharp stab of pain hit his skull so hard he couldn't hold back a groan.

A moment later, he heard the sound of running water in the bathroom. He turned his head just in time to see Cora walk out.

Had he gotten caught in the act? Cora had lied to him for so long, and he'd never once suspected she would cheat on him. He hadn't seen a single sign of her and her lover. And the one time he himself had gotten drunk and messed up, she'd caught him red-handed. This was such bullshit.

Joseph stared blankly at Cora as he thought all that, still trying to figure out what to say to her.

But she spoke first. "You're finally awake. You drank so much last night, yet you kept going until almost dawn. You must be exhausted and feeling miserable right now. You're not a young man anymore, so you can't keep overdoing it like that. No more next time, alright? I got you something for your hangover, so get up and take it."

There was no anger in her voice at all. Instead, she gently helped him sit up and fussed over him. It left him completely thrown.

"How did I end up here? And how did you get here?" he asked.

Through the haze, he remembered that he'd gone to Cora's new place last night. He shouldn't have ended up in a hotel room.

"You texted me last night and told me to come keep you company. I didn't expect you to drink that much or get that crazy after. You were kind of scary and did things you wouldn't have normally done. I couldn't keep up with you at all.

"Next time, if you wanna have fun like that again, you'd better warn me ahead of time so I can get ready. Otherwise, you'll end up hurting me," Cora said.

She smiled at him, her eyes filling with sweetness as they crinkled. A faint flush colored her cheeks, giving her mature, seductive features an even more irresistible charm. Last night, Joseph had been wild in bed and had completely conquered her all over again.

Joseph forced himself fully awake and grabbed his phone. Sure enough, he found the message he'd supposedly sent her last night.

He was stunned. He had absolutely no memory of what had happened. He'd been that drunk and somehow still managed to text her and have sex with her?

Whatever. Last night would be the last time they ever slept together as a married couple.

Joseph accepted that, cleaned himself up, and checked out of the room. The reservation had been made with his name and ID, and he'd apparently paid ten thousand dollars in cash for the room and deposit.

When he asked to see last night's surveillance footage, the hotel refused, citing guest privacy. The only thing they told him was that a woman with short red hair had brought him in.

He couldn't make sense of it. With Cora urging him along, he left the hotel with her to get something to eat. They went to The Flavor Club, one of the top high-end restaurants in Jenton, owned by the Lowell family.

Cora had the staff get them a quiet private room. Besides a table full of exquisite dishes, she also ordered a special nutritious soup for him, to "replenish his strength". After all, the passion he'd given her the night before had left her completely satisfied and utterly blissful.

Joseph didn't have much of an appetite, though. He picked at a few bites and set his cutlery down, staring at the message he'd supposedly sent again.

"I've been drinking. I don't wanna go home. It's been a long time since we did it in a hotel. I want to relive that, so come quickly."

No way would he have sent something like that, especially not after learning she'd cheated on him.

Cora noticed his distraction and chuckled. "Hurry up and drink the soup. You blew my mind last night as you always did, but you're 40 now. You need to pace yourself in that department. Think long-term."

Nothing about this situation felt remotely amusing or lighthearted to Joseph at the moment. He felt only a growing bitterness as he stared at Cora, who was stunningly beautiful. Even after over a decade of looking at her, he'd never grown tired of her face. If he hadn't found out about her affair, he could've spent the rest of his life utterly devoted to her.

He said, "Cora, you're gorgeous. Do you get hit on a lot?"

"Of course." She spoke while eating, chewing slowly and elegantly. Her every movement was refined.

His chest tightened. "Then have you ever slept with any of these men?"

Not long after Joseph left, Cora arrived at her parents' villa. Bernard said there was an emergency, so she thought Joseph had lost control and hurt her parents, and rushed back immediately.Arriving at the study, Cora noticed Bernard's dark expression and asked, "What happened?"Bernard said that Joseph had threatened to report them to the authorities over the bribery related to the Bubble Bay project. He stared at Cora and made a decision."We can't keep Joseph around anymore. Either you divorce him, or we deal with him for good.""Dad, don't be rash…""Cora, look at the two of you. What more do you want from him? The kids aren't even his, and you two are already drifting apart. "What are you even hoping for at this point? He already threatened us today. He might actually go to the authorities tomorrow.""Joe is my husband. You can't hurt him.""Even if we leave him alone, he's coming after us! Naturally, Joseph had gone over to Brooke and Rosalie's house. Even crashing on someone else's couch felt much more peaceful than being at home. In the middle of the night, after making sure Brooke was fast asleep, Rosalie came out and woke Joseph up, offering to please him with her hands. Joseph was rendered speechless at her offer. If he really wanted a woman, it wasn't like he couldn't find one. He just wanted to rest somewhere no one knew him—somewhere his friends and family couldn't track him down.Joseph didn't consider himself a saint either. He told Rosalie he didn't want her to use only her hands. He wanted to go all the way, including using her mouth. His request was enough to make her back off.Joseph made Rosalie promise one more thing. From now on, she wasn't to wake him up unless there was an emergency. Then he went back to sleep.Rosalie couldn't make sense of Joseph. To her, he didn't seem like a bad guy, which was why she had offered to please him with her hands

Joseph assumed Cora had sent Helen here to make such a shameless request. It was obvious. Cora and Helen wanted him to accept being cheated on and live with it. They wanted him to watch Cora hide behind a facade and raise three children who weren't his. They expected him to live in submission with no dignity, reduced to only existing in the background.Cora would always remain refined and respectable, while Joseph was forced to stay in the shadows. Of course, he could never agree to that.In the afternoon, Grace pushed open the door to Joseph's office. Aside from wanting to see him, she also had a request, but she wasn't sure how to bring it up. More like, it would be easy to ask him about it, but getting him to agree would be hard. One more thing—Mavis would be arriving soon, and Grace wanted to reconfirm the ward arrangements with Joseph one last time. "Joseph, over the past few nights, you haven't been staying at hotels. You didn't even go to your laboratory or head home. Wh

Joseph stared at Helen in disbelief. He was so angry that he didn't even know what to say. He dipped his finger in his tea and scrawled on the table—one could never truly understand what others were thinking.Helen thought Joseph was about to name a price, so she was very disappointed and lost respect for him. She pulled a pre-drafted contract from her bag and handed it over, saying, "My family and the Lowells always keep our word. "As long as you don't ask for an unreasonable amount, we'll pay you at once. At the same time, we'll also support your medical career."Back then, I didn't realize you had real talent, so we'll invest in your development going forward. We'll send you to pursue a PhD and arrange postdoctoral training at the best medical institutions abroad."Joseph reviewed the contract and realized that once he signed it, he would receive the money, but he would never be able to divorce Cora. As for the amount, he could fill it himself. "Helen, look at what you're doi

When Joseph arrived at the hospital, he learned that someone had already examined Frank in the middle of the night. Mason had brought in specialists from outside the hospital to give him a thorough examination and even administered acupuncture.Joseph was secretly surprised. He examined Frank himself and concluded from the needle placements that acupuncture had been intended to stimulate the nervous system, including the nerves in his arms. Clearly, they wanted to get Frank writing again, but their plan had failed. He still couldn't talk, nor could he write.Around 9:00 am, Frank's wife and children were successfully transferred back to the hospital. After a checkup, Joseph realized they were in critical condition. If they had arrived any later, they might have suffered early brain atrophy that would have led to severe cognitive impairment.Joseph had Paige cover for him before speaking with Frank. He informed Frank that his wife and children were in critical condition at the ho

That afternoon, Joseph spent several hours performing a liver surgery. By the time he left the hospital, evening had already fallen. Without drawing attention to himself, he made his way back to the apartment where the mother and daughter pair stayed. He handed the bag of medicine to the middle-aged woman, saying, "If you don't take this, your condition will only get worse. A cough can turn into pneumonia. When that happens, your already struggling family will be in deeper trouble."The woman stared at him suspiciously, and the wariness in her gaze grew stronger.Joseph said, "Don't overthink it. I just don't want my investment going to waste. This is all purely transactional. Don't mistake me for a good person. If you don't ask me who I am, I won't ask you how you ended up like this."Still, if someone gives you trouble during this month, you can tell me. I'll handle it for you."After sitting down for a short while, he heard the door open. The little girl had returned from schoo

Cora felt that Joseph's presence was doing more harm than good. Not only was he offering no useful advice, but he was also upsetting Bernard and Helen further.
