Chapter 2

作者: Moon Triad
After I saw Cameron off, I went back to the dressing room to change out of my tuxedo. Before the full-length mirror, the black tuxedo caught the shifting light, the silk lapels gleaming like still water.

Ruby had flown all the way to Baymouth to have this tuxedo custom-made by an old tailor. It was one of the few truly thoughtful gifts she ever gave me.

The day of the fitting, she had said, "You're my empire. Marry me, and I'll make you kind of the whole world."

At that moment, I had believed her.

I had thought that after ten years, we had finally made it. But it was over before it even began.

I lowered my eyes and took off the tuxedo. Then, I turned and left.

As the door swung shut behind me, the jacket slipped from its hanger, and the gold-thread crest on the breast pocket vanished into the folds.

I was about to leave early when the commotion at the entrance stopped me in my tracks.

In the center of the crowd, Ruby and Steve were being egged on to take a bite of the same apple. Just as they went in for a bite, the apple was swiftly yanked upward. The two of them melted right into a kiss instead.

The ballroom erupted in a chaos of screams and whistles.

Ruby's friends, not noticing me standing in the corner, chatted away without restraint.

"Look at how happy Ruby is! I'll bet 100 dollars she's still in love with Steve."

"Since Ruby chose Steve for the wedding, does that mean Ivan got dumped?"

"Obviously! Ivan's nothing but a bootlicker from the slums. Ruby was just playing around with him. There's no way she'd really marry him."

"He's such a loser. Seven years of sucking up to Ruby, and he still couldn't win her heart. A man as pathetic as him might as well just drop dead."

Unspeakably filthy mockery rose up and droned in my ears.

In a daze, I was transported back to that summer ten years ago.

My father, Doug Turner, who had abandoned me long ago, lost money gambling again. He went so completely off the rails that he chased me all the way to my school.

He grabbed me by the arm and tried to shove me into some old lady's car.

A crowd had gathered around us. Mockery and pity buzzed in the air, yet not a single person stepped forward to help me.

That was, until Ruby showed up.

She ordered her bodyguards to drive Dad away, then helped me call the police.

From that moment on, she became my obsession. But now, that obsession was broken.

The mocking laughter still rang in my ears, but it felt muted, like a distant buzzing behind a pane of glass. It just couldn't get to me anymore.

"Ivan?" the bridesmaid's voice rang out.

Ruby whipped her head around to look at me. The corners of her lips were still wet.

Our eyes met. A flicker of panic flashed through her gaze, but just as quickly, she expertly pulled on a smile.

"We're just playing a game. Don't overthink it."

"Yeah, I won't. Enjoy yourselves." I stepped around her to leave.

Ruby's eyes froze over. She grabbed me by the wrist and asked, "Are you going home? I'll give you a ride."

But before she could even take a step, a pained groan from beside her pulled her attention away.

Steve clutched his forehead and slumped dramatically against her shoulder.

"Ruby, I think I'm drunk."

Hearing this, Ruby immediately steadied him. Then, she looked at me hesitantly and said, "I'll take Steve back to rest first. Why don't you—"

I glanced at Steve, whose eyes were as clear as ever, and calmly cut Ruby off, "Okay. I'll head back on my own."

The words she had been about to say caught in her throat. She gave me an unreadable look but ultimately nodded.

"Be good and wait for me. I'll be back soon."

With that, she looked away from me and quickly left with Steve in her arms.

I withdrew my gaze and pulled out my phone to cancel the marriage registration appointment scheduled for tomorrow.

Ruby strode up to the stage. Then, she got down on one knee and held up a ring toward me."Ivan, I was the one who messed things up in the past. I never should've given the wedding to Steve, and I shouldn't have strung him along the way I did."But I do love you. This time, let me be the one to propose. Marry me, and let me spend the rest of my life making it up to you."Madeline's expression darkened. She was about to step forward, but I stopped her."I'll handle this. It won't take long."Madeline cast me a worried look but ultimately took a step back.I turned to look at Ruby. She had grown even thinner in the week since I'd last seen her. The wedding dress that once fit her perfectly now hung loose and empty.Under her pleading gaze, I took the ring. The diamond was dazzlingly bright, and engraved on it were the letters I had carved with my own hands—I & R.It was the same ring she had once asked me for, only to put it on Steve's finger.I smirked and, right in front of R

After that day, Madeline didn't want to leave anything to chance, so she set our wedding for the very next week.I initially thought she was joking. After all, a wedding was no small affair.Normally, one would need to book the venue, the date, and the arrangements at least six months to a year in advance. But as it turned out, Madeline had already prepared everything long ago.The diamond ring was one she had spent three years bidding for at auction. The hotel was Sky City, the venue I had tried and failed to book three times. The tuxedo was something she designed herself. She flew overseas with her sketches and had a world-class designer bring it to life, a process that took an entire year. She'd even taken care to note that the drinks for the reception should not include orange juice. On the day of the wedding rehearsal, Cameron showed up once again. He patted me on the shoulder, unusually sentimental. "Ivan, now this is the kind of wedding that's worthy of you. You deserve no

My words were cold and cutting, the kind Ruby hadn't heard from me in all the seven years we'd been together. She had always thought of me as gentle and considerate, that no matter what she did, I would always forgive and tolerate her. However, she had forgotten that I used to have a sharp tongue and a temper too.Ruby stared at me, stunned. The aftermath of the sleepless night came crashing down on her, her head pounding like it was about to split open.Yet, she still refused to believe that I would truly leave her.She forced out an awkward laugh, her voice so hoarse it sounded like her throat was coated in sand."Stop messing around. It's not funny at all. If you really wanted to break up with me, why would you even come to the city hall? Are you still mad that I gave the wedding to Steve? Don't worry. I've already asked the wedding planner to redo everything. I promise—"I cut her off impatiently, "Ruby, I'm not messing around with you. I came to the city hall to register my

Outside the city hall, I looked at the marriage certificate and felt an inexplicable sense of peace. My parents had divorced when I was very young. I'd followed Mom, drifting from place to place, always yearning deeply for a home of my own.I quietly read the names printed on the marriage certificate—Ivan Turner and Madeline Goldstein. The two names sat closely together, looking perfectly harmonious.Madeline was my childhood neighbor. We had grown up together, as close as could be. It was only in high school, when we ended up at different schools, that we slowly drifted apart. On the day we graduated high school, Madeline suddenly came to find me and confessed her feelings. She said her father, Joshua Goldstein, was making her study abroad, and she didn't want to leave without any regrets. But by then, I was already with Ruby. I didn't want to hold Madeline back either, so I turned her down. She smiled bitterly but handed me a Reconciliation Voucher."No matter when you come to

Ruby curled the streets over and over, but she couldn't find me anywhere. I wasn't at my office, nor was I at the place where we had our first date. She even had Clarence search every hotel, only to come up empty-handed.The sky gradually brightened, the east tinged with a streak of orange.Driving aimlessly, she found herself at the park where she had confessed her feelings to me, almost without realizing it.Back then, she had just broken up with Steve and was sitting there drinking when she ran into me, out on my night jog.I stopped and handed her a sandwich. "Drinking on an empty stomach is bad for you. Have something to eat first."Seeing the tips of my ears turn bright red, she suddenly asked, "Do you have a crush on me or something?"At her blunt question, my ears flushed even deeper, like ripe apples. But I didn't look away or avoid her gaze.Instead, I looked straight at her and answered with endearing seriousness, "Yes, I have a crush on you. In fact, I've had a crus

"What's wrong?" Steve asked. He had been waiting for ages, but all Ruby did was play that video. He had just moved closer, about to make a move, but the look on Ruby's face startled him.Ruby's hand trembled slightly as she gripped her phone. She stared at the message on the screen, barely able to believe her eyes."Your marriage registration appointment with Mr. Ivan Turner has been canceled."How could it be canceled? She wondered if I was the one who had canceled it.The moment the thought crossed her mind, her immediate assumption was that I was just throwing another tantrum. A surge of anger welled up inside her.She yanked the door open and shouted furiously, "Ivan, what the hell are you playing at now?"However, no one answered her. There was no one in the living room. After a few seconds, Maria emerged from the kitchen and reported timidly, "Mr. Turner just left with his suitcase."Ruby's furious look froze in place. She instinctively wanted to go after me, but Steve
