LOGINAmber’s POV
Hearing him address me like that did something to me and I wasn’t sure why especially when he put his arms over my shoulders. He never behaved that friendly with me since I have known him so why now. Even after I explained how I knew him, it still felt like he wasn’t satisfied, more like he doubted me and that was when I remembered. Vee mentioned that they were rivals and my boss just saw me being friendly with his rival. Great, just great Amber. Back home, I tried to shake off the tension. Cooking was my comfort, my way of moving past everything. If not that I needed a stable income, I would have opened a restaurant but I didn’t have a sponsor so I settled for the available. Making my way to his study, “Dinner’s ready,” I called. “I don’t remember asking you to cook, Amber.” He said with raised brows. “I just thought you needed something to eat since you haven’t had any and don’t worry, it’s not poisoned.” “You think am scared of poison?” He scoffed. “I just don’t like favors, I don’t want to owe you anything,” he said, refusing. “It’s my way of saying thank you for the clothes” I countered lightly. Sighing in defeat, he joined me at the dining table. He ate in silence at first, then finally said, “Thank you.” His eyes lingered on me longer than necessary. I could feel the tension between us, all of a sudden the air changed and it felt heavy. But before it could go further, his phone rang, he answered much to my dismay. He stood up almost immediately after the call, his expression going cold again like he didn’t also feel the tension. “I have work to finish,” he said flatly, already walking away. Of course. Back to this version of him. I cleared the table quietly, trying not to overthink the way he had looked at me earlier, the way his voice had softened when he said thank you. Hours later, I woke up, my throat dry. The house was silent. I slipped out of bed, careful not to make any noise as I made my way to the kitchen. After drinking water, I was heading back when I noticed his door slightly open. At first, I wanted to ignore it. It wasn’t my business. Nothing about Adrian ever was. But then I heard a low muffled groan “…Mom…” I froze. Another restless movement followed, the sheets rustling. He sounded, scared. Not his usual arrogance, who would have thought that the great Adrain Volkov could have nightmares. At that moment, he looked vulnerable. Before I could talk myself out of it, I pushed the door open gently. He was tossing on the bed, his face tense, brows furrowed, like he was fighting something in his sleep. “Don’t go” he muttered. Seeing him that way made me feel some type of way that I didn’t understand. I hesitated for a second, then stepped closer. “Adrian” I called softly. No response. I swallowed, sitting carefully at the edge of the bed. My hand hovered before I finally placed it lightly on his arm. “Adrian,” I whispered again, softer this time. Without thinking, I started humming a soft tune my mother used to sing to me when I had nightmares. It felt silly at first but slowly his movements eased, his breathing steadied and the tension in his face softened. I reached for the duvet and pulled it over him properly, tucking it slightly like someone who cared. Realizing myself, I stood up quietly, ready to leave when he suddenly wrapped his hands around my wrist. “Don’t go.” he murmured, eyes still closed. For a moment, I considered pulling away but something in his voice or was it because I know how it feels to have nightmares with no one around to bring you out of it. Eventually, I settled for the latter. Carefully, I sat back down, gently tapping on his chest while resting my head on the headboard and before I knew it, the exhaustion pulled me under too. Adrian’s POV The darkness came again, it always did but this time, something was different. There was a voice soft and familiar, a melody I hadn’t heard in years. My mother’s song, the one she used to sing when the nightmares got too much. The one that always made everything feel safe. I smiled slightly in my sleep, trying to hold onto it. Because for the first time in a long time, the darkness didn’t win. **** Morning came slower than usual and this time, I had a peaceful night. I opened my eyes, already expecting the usual tension in my chest, the lingering frustration but it wasn’t there. Instead something warm rested against me, my gaze dropped to my chest and it was Amber sleeping in my bed. My jaw tightened instantly. “What the hell”? I pulled away sharply, the movement waking her. Her eyes fluttered open, confusion settling in before realization hit. “I…” she started. “Get out.” My voice was cold and sharp. I could tell she was shocked but I didn’t care. “I said get out, Amber.” She quickly got off the bed, clearly flustered. “You were having a nightmare and your door was open, I just…” “And that gave you the right to crawl into my bed?” I cut in, my tone laced with accusation. Her expression fell. “That’s not what happened.” “Oh really?” I scoffed, standing up. “Because it looks exactly like what it is.” Her brows furrowed, hurt flashing across her face. “I was helping you.” “I didn’t ask for your help,” I snapped. “And I definitely don’t need whatever this is.” The room was silent and the silence was suffocating. She stared at me, disbelief written all over her face. “You’re just like the rest of them.” She blinked. “What do you mean?” I gave her a cold look not caring if my words hurt her. “A slut looking for an opportunity.” The moment the words left my mouth, the look on her face changed, she was hurt but I couldn’t bother. “Understood,” she said softly. No argument, no defense, just that then she walked out. The rest of the day was formal. “Your schedule for today, sir,” she said without looking at me. I took the file. “Reschedule the 2PM meeting.” “Noted.” Nothing more, no extra conversations, not her trying to start up a conversation with me or catch my eyes. No eye contact, no warmth, just a cold attitude. Good, That’s how it should be. So why did it bother me?Adrian’s POVThe doctor adjusted his glasses as he examined Amber once more. A small flashlight moved across her eyes before he finally stepped back.“Her vitals are stable.”I sighed out in relief as I strode towards her side. “But…”I stopped in my tracks and turned towards him“The headache she experienced wasn’t unusual.”I furrowed my brows in confusion.“What do you mean?”He closed his notebook.“When patients with selective retrograde amnesia encounter something emotionally familiar, their brains sometimes try to reconnect those memories.”“So, are you saying she remembered something?”“Perhaps, it could’ve been a memory or it could’ve been a feeling.”I rubbed my temple in frustration “And if it happens again?”He looked directly at me.“I know you want her memories back as soon as possible, Mr. Volkov, but recovering too much too quickly can overwhelm the brain.”“So what do I do?”“Nothing, don’t force it.” He smiled faintly. After the doctor left, I remained standing out
Adrian’s POVThe doctor’s office smelled strongly of antiseptic, but somehow it couldn’t drown out the thoughts racing through my head. I hadn’t taken my eyes off Amber since she’d opened them. She remembered Vee. She remembered her childhood. She even remembered her university days. But me? I was a complete stranger. The doctor closed the file in front of him.“Mr. Volkov.”I looked up with concentration. “Your wife has selective retrograde amnesia.”“What does that even mean?”The doctor folded his hands together.“Traumatic events affect everyone differently. Sometimes the brain locks away painful memories as a way of protecting itself.”“So what am I supposed to do?”He gave me a look that spelled out pity before answering.“Nothing.”I frowned in disbelief. “Nothing? So that’s it?”“You don’t force memories back. Don’t overwhelm her with photographs, stories or reminders. Let her remember at her own pace.”“And if she doesn’t?”“Then you help her create new memories.”I stared
Adrian’s POVThe room was silent, the kind of silence that was deafening to the ears, the kind that made it difficult to breathe. The old butler stood in front of me with his head bowed, his hands trembling by his sides. He knew why he was here and damn right, he should be scared. I looked at him for what felt like forever, waiting for him to deny it, to tell me there had been a mistake.Instead, he stayed quiet.“So, it’s been you all along.”I heard myself speak in a tone softer than expected. Maybe because I was still too shocked to believe he could do something like this to me.“You saw me rack my head and grow frustrated every time I tried to find her and yet you didn’t feel pity for me.”He slowly nodded, then muttered “I’m sorry.”I let out a dry laugh. “Sorry? Sorry for what exactly? The betrayal or that you were caught?” “For how long has this been going on?”“…Three weeks.”Three weeks. It started with the threat messages sent to Amber then me. Now it makes sense of how h
Adrian’s POVThe convoy tore through the empty streets, sirens cutting through the silence of the night. I sat in the back seat, my gun resting on my lap while my eyes stayed fixed on the tablet displaying the abandoned warehouse.“Five minutes out, sir,” the driver announced. My mind replayed the call over and over.“It’s coming from inside your old properties list.”Whoever they were, they knew my past. Which meant they either knew me or someone close to me did.“We’re here.”The SUVs came to a halt outside the old warehouse. The building looked exactly how I remembered it, abandoned, forgotten and lifeless.I stepped out first. “Spread out,” I ordered. “Make sure nobody leaves this place.”My men moved immediately. I pushed open the warehouse door, gun raised. The hinges groaned loudly. There were no voices or movement. It was just abandoned crates, broken furniture and years of dust.“Clear!” I heard one of the men shout from upstairs.Another voice echoed from the back.“Nothing h
Adrian’s POV“FIND THAT VAN NOW!”My voice echoed through the room, sharp enough to make everyone get to work immediately. “Plate number, sir?” “Zoom in,” I snapped. The footage was zoomed in, blurry but not useless.“Enhance that frame. I want every digit and every scratch on that vehicle.”My chest felt tight like something was pressing down on it. What was this feeling? Fear? No, I'm supposed to be composed in this situation and not let them see me falling. But this, this was something i never imagined would happen. I watched the screen again and again and I couldn’t help but notice how they rough-handled my woman. The way they grabbed her and the way she struggled to break free. My jaw clenched, whoever did this to her was going to pay and that was my vow.“Sir, we’ve got partial plates,” one of my men said quickly. “Tracking traffic cams now.”“Do it faster.”I ran a hand through my hair, as I paced back and forth the room. This wasn’t random, It was too clean like it w
Adrian’s pov Standing outside her room, I kept pacing back and forth not knowing whether to knock or just walk past. Since the last incident, she’s been avoiding me and it’s worse since we didn’t go to work anymore.I could hear the rustling pages of a book, I guess she’s reading a book. I really don’t even know how to go over and invite her for the banquet we would be going for. She made it clear to me that she hated my guts and didn’t want to have anything to do with me but this banquet is a huge deal for me as I get to meet investors too. I knocked on her door twice but got no response and just as I was about to leave, I heard the door creak open. It looked like she had been away for months while she was just here but staying away from me. “I’m sorry to disturb you, I just wanted to give you this.” I said stretching out my hand to give her a box. It contained a gown and jewellery for the banquet tonight. She looked at the box and back at me before muttering some words. “What’s
Adrian’s POVI watched the footage again and it was clearly Amber’s room. The camera angle was precise and it looked like it was planted more like a device. It didn’t look like it was taken by chance or from outside, it looked like an inside job. Who would come to my house to plant a device or d
Adrian’s POVI didn’t sleep a wink last night, not because of her this time but because of that message.“You really think you’ve won? Let’s see how long she stays yours.”I stood in my study, staring at the screen again like I could figure out who the coward was or the words would somehow change.
Amber’s POVI stayed awake all night staring at the ceiling in my room. Sleep wasn’t forthcoming as I relayed the day’s events over and over again.I couldn’t help but think about him and the way he said those words “You’re mine.” Something about it sent a tingling sensation down my spine. The wo
Adrian’s POV I couldn’t sleep. Not because I wasn’t tired but because I kept thinking about her. The way she looked when I walked into that room. She looked lost and shaken, she was trying so hard to hold herself together. I didn’t like it. I didn’t like that some pathetic excuse of a man had tha
