LOGINCHAPTER FIVE.
Saving Katherine
Katherine's POV
I woke up with the rays of the early morning sunshine, and it was so pleasing to my eyes.
I saw him sitting on the second couch next to me.
“Good morning.” He was the first person to initiate a greeting, and I responded with a cool smile on my face.
“You didn't sleep throughout the night did you?” I asked him to show care and not to be a selfish human.
He looked at me and smiled, “I did, but I guess it wasn't for too long.” He replied to me as he kept the smile intact. I blushed in embarrassment remembering last night.
The conversation was going on until my phone beeped for a message.
At first, I was surprised because I didn't know it was going to come back to life after I didn't check it in the morning.
“Excuse me, please, can you please pass me the phone inside that bag?” I asked politely, he took my bag and handed me the phone.
As I opened my phone, I saw a message from my mom’s second line: “Hey Diana, your father and I are waiting for you. Did you tell Katherine that she doesn't belong to this family?” As I read it my mind skipped.
In less than a minute, Mom cleared the message from the chat, but I had already read it.
I was so confused, who then gave birth to me?
Dave noticed the sign on my face and asked “What is wrong?” I couldn't explain but all I could say was “I want to go home.”
My eyes were already soaked with tears and I was seeing Dave so cloudy.
“I will take you home, I can’t leave you like this,” he responded to me.
I was trying to use the tip of my cloth to clean my face as I said “Thank you”
I stood up and we went down before we were able to see a cab to take us to my house. Judging by the place we left, I felt it was an inheritance of his because he doesn’t look like someone with much money.
Soon we got to the mansion. I told him to stay at the entrance of the gate because I did not want my parents to know that a stranger followed me home.
He did as I told him. I entered the house alone, and I saw a full house of Mom, Dad, Diana, and Felix.
“What exactly is going on? Mom, is the message true?” I faced her frankly and asked her.
She felt that the secret had been exposed and there was no way to cover it up anymore.
“Yes, that's the truth, and you know now, you are an adopted child and not our biological child,” Mom said. It didn’t make sense that my own biological parents would abandon me at the playground when I was 5.
“You must be a disaster and that’s why they ran for their life, don’t you think?” She finally gave me the details and the history of my life when I was picked to become their child.
I couldn't pull myself together as I was crazily shocked. My bag fell out of my hand while my tears streamed down my face profusely. That would explain why they wouldn’t support me no matter what I do.
“Katherine, is everything okay?” Dave’s voice jolted me out of my thoughts, “I realized you were taking too long, so I just wanted to check on you.”
As much as I was still in awe and trying to balance myself, immediately, Dave saw Diana, and he recognized her.
“You, you lied to me?” He said to Diana, pointing a finger at her.
I was confused. I wanted to know what exactly was going on.
“You both know each other,” I asked him.
I was curious to know.
“She was my girlfriend, and she left me all of a sudden and refused to stop picking up my calls. I don't follow ladies around, so I had to let her be,” Dave said as I was surprised at this stage.
Suddenly, father interrupted, “She is next to inherit what I have, so I don't permit her to marry a bankrupt man because the son of a bankrupt man is also a bankrupt man.” I looked at Dave and asked him.
“Your dad is a billionaire?” I said surprised, that would explain the place we were at last night.
He looked at me, his eyes full of sorrow. He closed his eyes and opened them, then nodded his head, “My dad was a billionaire”.
I felt pity for him and his dad but there was no way I could help.
“Now listen, young man, you cannot have Diana anymore, even if you both have the same alphabet starting your name. Poverty is real.” Dad cleared his throat as I looked at him with my mouth wide open.
He looked at me with no regard and said, “But you see this one in front of you, take her as your wife, and if you decide not to give full bride price, no problem, we know how poor your father is, and you can’t afford a square meal.” They all laughed.
These were the same people I had regarded as family for years, and now that they had found their own daughter not less than 7 years, they wanted to abandon me.
Just as Dad was speaking, Diana went upstairs and brought my box filled with cloth and dumped it in front of me. “Your stay here is over. Most of your properties belong to us, so you aren’t allowed to take them away.”
“Yes, Mom and Dad were already nice enough to let you take a few clothes along with you.” Felix interceded, how could he not see they were using him also? For those who could abandon a billionaire just because he went bankrupt.
I closed my eyes in rage, opening it, “You know what, I wouldn’t stay with a dog family like yours, I’d rather stay with a stranger than be with you guys also.”
“Marrying Dave isn’t so much a bad idea and I can fully support him.” I scoffed, Dave smiled lightly at me.
That was when I noticed he was on call, he dropped the call and faced dad. Dad quickly started talking, “Hey young man, you need to understand that this is a free meal that everyone would like to take, you can’t reject it…”
Dave didn't allow Dad to finish his words before he interrupted him, “Oh I think you misunderstood something…” He paused, and I was scared he would really reject me, which would be another form of embarrassment.
“Being with Katherine would be a huge blessing over Diana. You really hold regard for your open daughter.” He smirked, and I burst out laughing immediately. Their faces all went sour.
“From your understanding, the son of a bankrupt man is bankrupt, but why do I feel like you are wrong?”
In less than five minutes, five exotic cars entered the compound, and I was amazed at where they were from and who they came from.
Not so long, Dave moved closer to me and said, “It's time to go home,” as he smiled at me. The realization is setting in.
Penelope's POVI sat in my car outside the hospital, engine off, windows cracked just enough to let the cool evening air in. My eyes stayed fixed on the building where Dave lay recovering and where that little nobody thought she had won something. The text I just sent to Katherine was only the beginning. It was time to remind her exactly who she was dealing with.I pulled out a cigarette and lit it slowly, taking a long drag. The smoke filled my lungs and I held it there for a moment before exhaling. My phone sat in my lap, screen glowing with photos I had been collecting for weeks. Pictures of Dave and Katherine at various locations. Timestamps showed I had been following them everywhere. Their favorite coffee shop. The restaurant where they had dinner last Tuesday. The park where Katherine liked to walk in the mornings.I had everything documented. Their routines, their vulnerabilities, their moments of weakness. Every single detail is cataloged and ready to use.Liam had been slopp
Katherine's POVThe hospital room became deathly silent after Liam's words. My heart stopped beating. My lungs stopped working. My mind struggled to process what I had just heard. He admitted it. He actually admitted to trying to kill me. He stood there in that hospital room and confessed to attempted murder like he was discussing what he had for breakfast.Dave exploded.Despite his injuries, despite the pain, despite everything, he tried to lunge from that bed. "YOU BASTARD!" The sound that came from him was pure animal rage, something primal and terrifying. The heart monitor went absolutely crazy. Alarms blared from every direction. I threw myself at Dave, using my full weight to hold him back. "Dave, stop! You will hurt yourself!"But he was beyond reason. His eyes were murderous as he strained against my hold and his own weakness. His face went red with effort and fury. "I am going to kill you," he snarled at Liam with such venom that I barely recognized him. "I am going to destr
Katherine's POVMy entire body went rigid the second Liam walked into that hospital room. He strolled in like he owned the place, carrying those flowers with that easy smile plastered across his face. A smile that now looked absolutely sinister knowing what I knew. Every instinct in my body screamed danger. I moved without thinking, positioning myself between him and Dave's bed like a human shield. The heart monitor erupted into frantic beeping. I glanced back and saw Dave's face contort with pure rage despite how weak he still was."Get out." Dave's voice came out like ice. Each word was clipped and dangerous in a way I had never heard before.Liam's smile did not falter. He set the flowers down on the side table with deliberate slowness, taking his time like he had every right to be there. "That is no way to greet your best friend who has been worried sick about you."His dark eyes slid to me. My stomach turned violently at the fake concern painted across his features."Katherine, y
Dave's POVPain radiated through every inch of Dave's body, but the rage burning in his chest was stronger than any physical agony. He watched Katherine's face drain of all color at his words. Her hand trembled in his. He should not be telling her this now. The doctor had ordered rest. He should play the obedient patient and keep his mouth shut. But the memory of that chandelier falling, of nearly losing her, made his blood boil hot enough to override every rational thought."Who?" Katherine demanded. Her voice shook but held firm. "Dave, who tried to kill me?"He hesitated. Once he told her, there was no going back. She would be pulled deeper into the darkness surrounding his family, into secrets he had kept buried for years. She would see the ugliness beneath the Winter name, the rot at the core of everything he came from."Dave." Her eyes burned into his, fear and determination mixing together. "Tell me."He had spent his whole life protecting people by keeping them at a distance.
Katherine's POV The moment Dave whispered my name, the entire hospital room erupted into chaos.Penelope gasped as someone had punched her. Aunt Vivian clutched her chest and nearly stumbled backward. The other relatives rushed toward the bed in a stampede of expensive shoes and designer perfume. But I was faster. My legs moved before my brain caught up, and suddenly I was at his side, gripping his hand like it was the only thing keeping me tethered to earth.Dave's eyelids fluttered. His blue eyes cracked open slowly, unfocused and glazed with pain. They swept across the room, taking in the chaos, the faces, the noise. Then they found me.Everything else disappeared.A weak smile tugged at his pale lips. "You're safe."The tears came hard and fast. I tried to speak but my throat closed up completely. All I could do was nod like an idiot while my vision blurred."You're such an idiot," I finally choked out. "You absolute idiot."His smile widened just a fraction. I saw recognition fl
Katherine's POV Penelope sighed again, even more dramatic than she was before."Please don't say that to me."Those were Fake concern, fake innocence, pretending to be the best of all. Yet the women immediately comforted her, not me, showing how low they think. Aunt Vivian shook her head, like she was tbd victim and not me."Penelope, everyone knows the truth."I frowned at their display of concern, their dramatic self on show. What truth are they talking about? The older woman continued what she was saying. "You loved Dave so dearly like yourself."My stomach started boiling in anger at their stupidity. "And everyone expected you to marry him not a complete stranger."Penelope lowered her head, using the opportunity to play the victim perfectly."I made mistakes."Aunt Vivian hugged her to herself, to console her like a mother would to a her child."We all do my dear."I couldn't believe what I was watching before me. It felt ridiculous. Then Penelope whispered softly, but I sti
Katherine's POV "Knowing this happened because of you."The words hit hard, as I was not expecting such from her. I know she's mean, but to this extent, rubbing everything on my face so I won't survive the guilt? Penelope noticed immediately that her words worked, so she smiled. Because that was
Katherine's POV Penelope's Return Game"And when you wake up..."My voice broke. "...you can yell at me for getting involved."Still, he said nothing and I smiled sadly. I couldn't think straight, as everything about me was crowded with the thought of him not making it at last. Unable to concentra
Katherine's POV "Know what exactly?"She looked toward Dave, then back at me."Katherine."Her smile widened, and I couldn't help but wonder if they were genuine. "That man is hopelessly gone for you."My heart skipped violently, as that was the least thing I was expecting to hear from her. "Wha
Katherine's POV"Mrs. Laurent, you should get some rest. You have tried already."I looked up immediately, only to see the nurse standing beside the hospital bed give me a sympathetic smile. It was meant to comfort me, as she meant no harm, but I hated that smile.People only gave that smile when s
