Chapter 2

Author: Northern Puppy
"Fake Jeremy suddenly grew a brain. I don't understand the plot anymore."

My fingers brushed the scar on my wrist. The skin was rough and uneven.

I didn't remember much from before I was five years old, but one image repeatedly returned to me in my nightmares—Luna pressing a red-hot iron stamp shaped like a cloud against my skin.

I remembered the smell of burning flesh, white smoke rising into the air, and the searing agony. Every time the dream reached that point, I woke up screaming.

I once asked her about it. "Luna, what is this scar?"

She was silent for a long time before she pulled me into her arms, resting her chin on top of my head. "It's a special mark to prove that you're my brother."

What a beautiful lie. It was never a "special mark".

At the mall, I bought a change of clothes—a black hoodie, jeans, and a pair of sneakers. After changing out of the bloodstained suit, I rolled my newly purchased 48-inch suitcase straight to the bank.

Inside the VIP lounge, the manager's eyes lit up when he saw the black card in my hand. His attitude instantly became respectful.

"I'd like to withdraw two million dollars."

The manager froze for a second before his years of professional training kicked in and he quickly smiled. "Of course, Mr. Rivers. One moment, please."

More comments flashed before my eyes.

"Hahaha. Is Fake Jeremy worried Luna will freeze his card later?"

"I have to say, this side character is pretty smart. He's striking first before she cuts him off."

"Why's he only withdrawing two million dollars? That card probably has a limit of 100 million dollars."

"He can only withdraw two million dollars because anything higher would require an appointment in advance. LOL."

I sat on the couch, watching the manager disappear through a side door.

My phone screen lit up with a text from Luna. "Where are you."

Just three words. Not even a question mark. It sounded more like an order than a question. I didn't reply.

30 seconds later, she sent another message. "Come back. Don't make me worry."

I ignored her again. Then, I opened a flight-booking app and searched for the earliest flight to Parvue.

When I entered my ID number and reached the birthday field, I paused. That birthday wasn't mine. 21st March was the birthday of the Rivers family's biological son.

When was my birthday? I had no idea.

Every birthday cake I'd ever received growing up had carried candles shaped into the numbers "3.21." For 18 years, I'd blown out those candles and made wishes. And I'd always wished to be Luna's brother forever.

What a joke.

I pressed "Purchase Ticket". The electronic confirmation appeared immediately. I had booked a ticket for a direct flight to Parvue Airport at 9.30 pm.

Now, I just needed to quickly board the plane before my ID became invalid.

An hour later, the manager returned with a heavy suitcase. "Mr. Rivers, would you like me to arrange for security to escort you?"

I smiled. "No, thank you. I already have bodyguards."

I wheeled the suitcase toward the exit. The moment I stepped outside, cold wind rushed down my collar. I hailed another cab. "To the airport."

As the car pulled onto the highway, I switched off my phone and slipped it into a compartment in my luggage.

"Fake Jeremy's leaving so decisively. I actually feel a little bad for him."

"Duh. If he stays until his ID becomes invalid, he'll never be able to leave."

Leaning back against the seat, I watched the highway barriers blur past outside the window.

The sky gradually darkened. In the distance, runway lights glowed as a plane slowly taxied across the tarmac.

Sitting in the waiting lounge, I was bored out of my mind. Eventually, I turned my phone back on. The instant I did, Twitter notifications exploded across the screen.

It was the fake heir. He was already in police custody. Today, he was here to identify the mastermind behind everything. He lowered his head, avoiding my gaze."I'm going to get justice for my parents," I said. The moment the words left my mouth, thunderous applause erupted below the stage. The live comments flooded my vision."Oh, my goodness! Abner is so cool!""Abner Rivers. Remember that name.""He finally gets to be himself!""Luna is so cool too. 18 years of sacrifice and protection is a lot. I can't stop crying.""This is the greatest stand-in story ever. Go, Abner!"After the press conference ended, I returned to my studio. I picked up the painting of the Parvue River and studied it for a long time. Then, I lifted it off the easel, rolled it up, and placed it inside a drawing tube.My phone chimed with a message from Luna. "The ticket has been booked. Your flight leaves for Parvue at 10:00 am tomorrow. Lionel will take you to the airport. Text me when you get there."

There was a sharp, calculating look in the man's eyes that made me uncomfortable."This is your uncle, Michael Rivers. He's your father's older brother."I stared at the picture. "He's the killer?""I suspect he is. After your parents died, all of the Rivers family's assets were transferred to your name. You are the sole heir of the Rivers family. If you die, all the assets will go to him." "So, he wanted to kill me?""Yes. He's been looking for you for 18 years. In those 18 years, he's sent three different groups of people to find you. Each time, I stopped them. This time, he found a man to impersonate you. It wasn't to replace your identity, but to force you to break down and make you destroy yourself."That way, he wouldn't have to get his hands dirty or leave behind any evidence. You'd be kicked out of the Rivers family and abandoned by everyone. Then, he could rightfully take everything from you."I finally understood everything. The car crash… The attempted murder at the

Luna was silent for a moment before answering, "I don't know. But I know that he was after you. He wanted you to break down and lose your mind. "He wanted you to do something you couldn't take back. That way, you'd be shunned by the Rivers family and everyone else. Then, he could rightfully…"She didn't finish, but I knew what she meant. He could rightfully take my place."So, you've been protecting me all this time?"She said nothing."So, the multi-million-dollar birthday celebration was meant to lure them out? So, you locked me in that room because you knew someone was going to make a move that day? And you accepted the fake heir because you wanted them to lower their guard?"She remained silent. But her hands were trembling."Luna." I stepped forward and looked into her eyes. "Why didn't you tell me? Why didn't you tell me the truth? Why didn't you let me know who I really was?"She stayed quiet for a long time. Then, she said something that made my heart stop. "Because I

A cigarette rested between Luna's fingers. She rarely smoked. The only times she did were when she couldn't sleep."You didn't sleep?" She turned to look at me."Neither did you."Humming in response, she stubbed out the cigarette and tossed it into a trash can. After a moment of silence, she said, "I want to show you something."She led me to a door deep within the estate. I had known about this door since I was a child, but I'd never seen it opened. Luna always told me it was a storage room for old junk. She pulled out a key and unlocked the door. The door swung open, revealing a staircase descending underground."Come."I followed her down the stairs to an enormous, brightly lit basement. Then, I saw it—an entire wall covered with photographs. The pictures were all of the same man, from infancy to adolescence to adulthood. Every photograph was labeled with a date and age. And the final photograph… was me. It was me on my 18th birthday, standing at the entrance of the ba

Blood dripped from my fingertips.Luna's expression changed, her cold composure shattering. "Lionel, call a doctor!""It's fine." I pressed a hand over the wound. "It's just a scratch.""That's not a scratch!" she shouted. It was the first time I'd ever seen her lose her composure. She squatted down, pulling a handkerchief from her pocket. Her hands trembled as she pressed it against my arm. In a shaky voice, she said, "Don't move."The woman who controlled everything was shaking.I looked down at her. Kneeling before me, she pressed hard against the wound on my arm. Blood soaked through the handkerchief, staining her fingers red."Luna."She hummed quietly in response."What was he trying to say just now?"Her hands paused. "Nothing.""He said I was the one who… the one who what?""Crazy." She looked up at me. "He said you're the one who's crazy. Everything he said was nonsense. Don't believe him."I looked into her eyes. There were too many emotions hidden behind them—a

"So, Luna knew he was fake from the start?""That can't be. Then why did she acknowledge him in the first place?""She did it on purpose? What is she trying to do?""The more I think about it, the more it seems like Luna was setting a trap."I looked at Luna. Her profile was hard and cold, like marble. She didn't show the slightest trace of anger or shock, only a chilling calm. She had known all along. From the very beginning, she had known this guy was a fake. Then why…"You thought I couldn't tell?" Luna suddenly laughed, sending a chill down my spine. "A brother who disappeared at three years old suddenly reappears 15 years later with the exact same face and the exact same scar. Don't you think that's a little too coincidental?"Jeremy trembled from head to toe. "You… you knew I was fake?""Not only did I know you were fake…" Luna said, pulling a voice recording from her coat pocket, "but I also know who sent you."She pressed play, and a voice sounded from the recorder. It
