Chapter 5

Author: Sammie Snow
After Fiona tore into him, Lucas had been too stunned to say a word.

But the truth was, he had never wanted luxury gifts.

He only wanted to know that she had thought of him while she was away.

Even the smallest, most meaningless thing would have made him happy.

But she had never given him even that.

In the end, it was simply because there had never been a place for him in her heart.

Now that he had finally decided to give up on this relationship, what was the point of trying to win him back?

Lucas didn’t dwell on it.

He ignored Rachel’s forced apologies and shut the door in her face.

Out of sight, out of mind.

Rachel kept apologizing from the other side of the door, but he pretended not to hear her.

Only after night fell did the hallway finally go quiet.

Lucas knew Rachel had left.

He closed his eyes.

Now he could finally get a good night’s sleep.

Rachel waited until evening, but Lucas still refused to budge.

Her patience was completely gone.

She left the apartment and drove back to Shaw Corporation.

She hadn’t expected Lucas to be so firm this time.

A faint unease stirred inside her.

This matter seemed to be slipping out of her control.

*

At Shaw Corporation, Rachel carefully watched Fiona’s expression as she explained.

“Ms. Shaw, Mr. York is still very angry and refuses to come back with me. Maybe we should give him a few more days. Once he calms down, I can go beg him again.”

Fiona’s face was frighteningly cold.

Lucas wasn’t replying to her messages.

He wasn’t answering her calls.

He had even refused to show respect to the person she sent for him.

Since when did he have such a temper?

“No need.”

Rachel secretly felt delighted.

She knew it. Lucas had gone too far this time and finally made Fiona unhappy.

“Clear my schedule tomorrow. I’ll go get him myself.”

The smile on Rachel’s face froze.

Had she heard that right?

When Rachel didn’t move, Fiona glanced at her with displeasure.

“What are you standing there for? Go.”

“Yes. I’ll do it right away.”

Rachel didn’t dare show her emotions. She quickly lowered her head and left.

*

After Lucas regained his strength, he thought about it all night and decided to make money through underground boxing.

The fallout with the Shaw family hadn’t blown over yet, so it would be difficult for him to find a proper job.

He only had a few hundred dollars left. If he dragged this out any longer, he would be broke.

Underground boxing was dangerous, but fighters were paid just for showing up, and winners earned even more.

Given his current situation, it suited him well.

When survival was on the line, love was the least of his concerns.

The next night, Lucas arrived at the underground fight club on time.

The place was called Dragon Gate. Rumor had it that it was backed by the largest gang in the city.

Lucas didn’t go out of his way to learn more.

Sometimes, knowing too much only brought trouble.

As soon as he stepped inside, music thundered through the air.

Lucas walked in calmly, quietly taking in his surroundings.

The matches hadn’t started yet, but the audience seats were already almost full.

Everyone wore a hollowed-out mask over their face, making it impossible to tell who they were. Privacy here was clearly taken seriously.

From time to time, waitresses in bunny costumes moved through the crowd, speaking softly as they served the guests.

Lucas kept his eyes forward and walked to the front desk. He gave the code his contact had provided.

The receptionist immediately handed him a number tag and a mask.

“Mr. York, right? Your number is six. You’ll be in the last match tonight.”

Dragon Gate held three boxing matches every night, and the guests could place bets freely.

Some people made heavy bets and got rich overnight.

Lucas put away the items the receptionist had given him. Soon, a staff member came forward to lead the way.

“Sir, the match starts at eight. Please head to the locker room and get changed first.”

Lucas nodded and followed.

When he arrived, there were already people inside the locker room.

At the sound of the door opening, everyone turned to look at him.

After sizing up his build, they all laughed in disdain.

Where had this weakling come from?

Was he just here to collect the appearance fee?

To be fair, Lucas had a good physique.

He was nearly six foot three, with broad shoulders, a narrow waist, and long arms and legs.

Because he had worked out consistently for years, his abs were clearly defined.

But compared to professional boxers covered in muscle, he still looked a little lacking.

Seeing their reaction, Lucas didn’t get angry.

He was here to make money. Nothing else mattered.

He walked into an empty stall at random and began changing.

Ten minutes later, Lucas stepped out in his fighting clothes.

The other boxers had already left.

But sitting on the long bench in the middle of the locker room was someone Lucas never expected to see.

She wore a white skirt suit, her legs crossed, her posture elegant and composed.

Her beautiful, icy face was calm and distant, carrying the kind of aloofness that made her seem impossible to reach.

Lucas’s pupils tightened.

What was Fiona doing here?

Fiona had clearly seen him too.

She raised the phone in her hand and asked expressionlessly, “Why didn’t you reply to my messages or answer my calls?”

Her voice was cold, laced with displeasure.

Lucas answered briefly, “I blocked you.”

Of course Fiona knew he had blocked her. She had only asked on purpose to start the conversation.

She stood.

Her graceful figure looked completely out of place in the cold locker room.

“Unblock me. Then come back with me.”

A self-mocking smile touched Lucas’s lips as he looked at her calmly.

“Fiona, we’ve already broken up.”

Fiona’s eyes darkened.

“Is this really necessary? Just because I canceled the wedding?”

Lucas pressed his lips together.

Of course it wasn’t just because she had canceled the wedding.

It was because, over the past eight years, there had been disappointment after disappointment.

That was what had led them here.

The canceled wedding had only been the final straw.

When Fiona saw that he wasn’t speaking, she let out a soft sigh and walked toward him in her heels.

She reached out and gently tugged at his sleeve. A trace of warmth softened her voice.

“Lucas, we can choose another date and hold the wedding again. Stop being angry, okay?”

Fiona almost never showed this softer side of herself.

Since childhood, she had been raised as the Shaw family’s heir. She was naturally distant, and her mind was always on work.

Coaxing someone gently was not something she knew how to do.

In the past, whenever they argued, all she had to do was soften her tone a little, and Lucas would practically tear his heart out and hand it to her.

But things were different now.

Lucas calmly pulled his sleeve out of her hand without even looking at her.

“Fiona, we’ve already broken up. From now on, you go your way, and I’ll go mine. We have nothing to do with each other anymore.”

“You want to break up with me?”

Fiona sounded as if she had just heard the most ridiculous joke.

“You’ve loved me for so many years. You were willing to do almost anything for me. Are you sure you want to break up?”

“Yes. She agreed.”As Rachel spoke, her fingers brushed gently over Zac’s lips. Her voice was soft as she promised him, “Zac, I love you. Don’t worry. I’ll get rid of Lucas. Even if I die, I’ll drag him down with me.“You just need to live well. You’ll have your career, and you’ll have the woman you love. As long as you’re happy in this life, that’s enough for me.”“Rach…”Zac used a more intimate nickname and looked at Rachel with tenderness in his eyes.“I’ll remember everything you’ve done for me. And you’ll keep your promise to me, won’t you?”After saying that, he leaned forward on his own and kissed Rachel lightly on the lips.Rachel’s face flushed. She nodded hard.“Yes. I promise I will do it.”Zac smiled, warm and gentle. But in his heart, he was thinking viciously that it would be best if Rachel and Lucas destroyed each other. It would be perfect if both of them disappeared from this world. As long as Lucas existed, Fiona’s heart would never belong to Zac complete

Fiona was furious. The color drained from her face, and she forced herself to take a deep breath to stay calm. She hadn’t expected Lucas to have no trust left in her at all.She had already promised him again and again that she would keep him safe this time, so why on earth did he refuse to believe her?She took a deep breath and forced herself to stay calm.“I will prove it with my actions. No one will be able to hurt you while I am there.”Lucas didn’t even bother answering her. He acted as if he hadn’t heard a word.“Fiona, stop wasting time talking to him.”Xena was frantic with worry over Zac, and she had no interest in whether Lucas lived or died.“Check your phone. Did Rachel send the address yet? We need to take Lucas and go make the exchange.”In Xena’s opinion, Fiona was already giving Lucas far too much respect. The Shaw family had raised him for so many years. With one order from them, he should have been willing to risk everything for the Shaw family. How did he

Fiona looked at her stubborn younger sister, and her mother’s dying words surfaced in her mind.In the end, she hardened her heart and spoke into the phone.“Fine. I agree to the trade.”“I’ll be waiting for you, Ms. Shaw,” Rachel said. “I’ll send the exact location to your phone. Remember, do not call the police. If you do, I’ll kill him immediately.”With that, Rachel hung up.The moment Fiona agreed to the exchange, Xena was overjoyed. The bodyguard beside her immediately stepped forward and snatched the fruit knife from her hand.Xena had already gotten what she wanted, so she let him take it without resisting. When Fiona saw that the knife had been taken away, she couldn’t hold herself back anymore. She walked up to Xena and knocked her hard on the head.“Are you insane? How dare you threaten to kill yourself? Were you trying to scare me to death?”Xena knew she had gone too far, so she immediately put on an obedient expression and hugged Fiona’s arm.“Fiona, please don

Xena, however, looked at Fiona with desperate expectation.“Fiona…”Her voice was full of pleading.Fiona’s answer was cold.“No.”Rachel finally dropped the act. Her voice turned arrogant and vicious.“Fiona, you really are cold-blooded. Zac loves you with all his heart, and you won’t even agree to this one little request? You don’t deserve his love at all.”“Rachel, running your mouth won’t work on me. Just wait for the law to come for you. This time, I’ll make sure you wish you were dead.”Fiona had never been the type to swallow an insult.Rachel had been her subordinate, yet she had betrayed her again and again.Fiona would never let someone that ungrateful and disloyal get away with it.Rachel’s sinister voice came through the phone.“If you won’t trade Lucas for Zac, I’ll upload the video of me and Zac right now. Are you really fine with Zac’s career being destroyed because of this, Fiona?”“Rachel, you bitch! Try it and see what happens! I’ll kill you! I swear I’ll

The bodyguards held Xena down tightly, afraid she would lose control and do something reckless.Once Lucas saw that she had been restrained, he turned his attention back to the call.He listened closely for a moment, then leaned toward Fiona and whispered, “Zac was probably drugged.”The sounds on the other end were intense.Rachel was clearly enjoying herself, her moans unceasing. But Zac’s voice sounded strained, almost pained, as if he had no control over what was happening.Although Lucas despised Zac, he couldn’t deny that Zac’s feelings for Fiona seemed genuine. A man like Zac would never willingly sleep with another woman. The only logical explanation was that he had been drugged, leaving him entirely powerless against his own impulses.Fiona agreed with Lucas’s guess. She beckoned another bodyguard over and gave him a few low instructions. The bodyguard quietly left the living room. Finally, after a low, strained sound from the other end, the noise stopped.Rachel l

Outside, Xena was furiously cursing at the bodyguards.Fiona let out a deep sigh. This sister of hers really never gave her a moment’s peace.“Let her in,” Lucas said. “If she keeps yelling out there, the neighbors are going to complain.”He didn’t like Xena, but he also didn’t want the neighbors downstairs filing complaints.“Let her in,” Fiona ordered.Once the bodyguards received permission, they stopped blocking the door.Xena stormed into the living room in her heels, furious and aggressive. She pointed at Lucas and questioned Fiona at once.“Fiona! Last night, Rachel said she wanted him in exchange for Zac. Why didn’t you agree?”Fiona’s expression turned cold in an instant.“Who told you that?”Apart from her and Lucas, no one else knew about this. She hadn’t even told the police, afraid that if Rachel felt cornered, she might do something that could never be undone.Xena’s confidence faltered slightly.“That doesn’t matter. What matters is that trading Lucas for Z
