Chapter 3

Autor: Honeyed Habit
That night, my head pounded so badly I could barely think straight, and in my daze, I accidentally dialed Nolan.

He came back right away, poured me a glass of water, and helped me take my medication.

"Do not blame the kid. It is just the novelty wearing off. Give it a few days and he will be calling for you again. Get some rest while you can. You have gotten thinner."

Once he saw I was feeling better, he went back to the hospital. Over the next few days, I could barely stay awake. Every time I surfaced, my mouth tasted bitter and my stomach cramped in waves.

I went to the hospital alone.

The doctor studied my face, puzzled. "Did you switch medications? The ones you were on before were working well. Do not change them unless there is a reason to."

I shook my head. I carried my medication everywhere, and the packaging looked the same as always.

However, the doctor picked up the pills and ran a quick test, and the results came back wrong.

"These are similar to sleeping pills. You are intolerant to those, are you not? I prescribed them once when you could not sleep, and you had this exact reaction. Your sleep has been fine lately, so who has been giving you these?"

My entire body went cold.

The image of Nolan handling my medication flashed through my mind, and I almost could not believe what it meant.

He had been annoyed that I called him the other night. To make sure it did not happen again, he had swapped my pills for sleeping medication.

Just weeks ago, he had been the one to warn me. "Every medicine has side effects. Make sure you do not mix anything up."

Yet his answer to keeping me from bothering him was to knock me out.

I let out a bitter laugh. It felt like my chest was being carved open one cut at a time.

I went home and started packing. I was not willing to put off the divorce any longer.

While I sorted through things, a test paper slipped out and drifted to the floor. It was from Bryce's language arts class, marked with a perfect score. The teacher had written a comment at the top.

"Sincere love, all for Mom. Wonderful!"

For a moment, I was somewhere else entirely. I remembered when Bryce first started preschool and came home with the first song he had ever learned, a little tune about how nobody in the world was better than your mother. I had held his hand on the walk home while he sang it in his wobbly, off-key voice.

"Mommy, when I grow up I am gonna buy you a big house. My mommy is the best."

I picked up the test paper and read what he had written.

"Mom and I are like frost on a winter night. We only come together when it is cold, and when it gets warm, we drift apart. So I keep waiting, hoping winter comes soon."

Every word was full of love, and none of it was for me. The realization crushed something at the center of my spine.

I sat alone for a long time. Then I stood, wiped the dust off my mother's urn, and held it against my chest.

The last gift she left me was not a good one. I was taking her with me when I left. I did not want anyone anymore.

The lock clicked, and Nolan walked in with Bryce, freshly discharged from the hospital. Bryce was still young and terrible at hiding things. He was still going on about whatever they had been discussing on the way home.

"Daddy, it is gonna be another nine months of sitting up straight and standing up straight, cannot eat this, cannot eat that. It is so annoying."

Nolan tapped him on the head. "Do not say stuff like that. Mom does it because she cares about you."

Bryce pouted. "But I am not happy. Daphne never makes me do all that stuff."

So that was how he really felt. Hearing it this time, I was calm.

The nine months he dreaded were the nine months I poured everything into. I had spent every single day terrified that the three-month allergy season would stretch longer. To them, those nine months were a prison sentence.

Nolan spotted me in the bedroom and assumed I had not heard any of it. After scolding Bryce, he brought him over.

"Iris, this little troublemaker is just being difficult. Good thing you did not come to the hospital, or he would have worn you out."

Just when I believed Nolan had given up, it made the news.Nolan had reached his breaking point and killed Daphne. He collapsed afterward, as though a weight had finally been lifted. In his last moments of freedom, he made sure to have Bryce's legal records transferred out of Daphne's name. That way, his son would have no remaining ties to her.He was done being tangled up with her. He lay on the ground, exhausted, barely half alive. All of it was his fault. He called the police and turned himself in.Daphne had stared at him in disbelief as she died. "I loved you that much, and you still could not be with me? Men are all the same. Those three months every year, you loved every second of it. But the moment it becomes every day, suddenly I am your cage."Iris and I both lost. Neither of us won a thing. We were both fools for ever loving you. You never deserved it."That was the line that pushed Nolan over the edge."This is all because of you. If you had never come into my life

I called for help immediately. Bryce barely pulled through, and when he came to, he cried and begged."Mommy, I really know I was wrong. I do not like Daphne. I will not be lazy anymore, I promise."I saved him, and I would have saved anyone. That did not mean I was willing to go back to the life I had before. When a heart had already died, there was no bringing it back.Nolan made a promise. "I will make everything the way it used to be."They bent over backward trying to win me over, and every gesture felt hollow.Eventually, Daphne could not sit still any longer. She refused to sign off on the annulment."Without my consent, you and I are still husband and wife. Were things not fine when you were all living with me? I need you, Nolan. You know that."Nolan put distance between them. "Back off. Stop showing up like this. You and I are done. This marriage is ending."He threw himself into getting it resolved and explored every legal avenue he could think of.He tried to have

  • Allergic to Me Every Winter   Chapter 7

Iris's POVLeaving Nolan and Bryce was not as painful as I had expected. I had spent every winter alone in misery for years. There was nothing left that I could not handle.I stopped revolving my life around them. I stopped memorizing who could not eat what.Every morning, I woke up and made myself a proper breakfast. I had no allergies. I could eat anything I wanted. In those few months on my own, I tried every food I could get my hands on, and life became better than it had been in a long time.It was just me and my mother.I talked to her every day. We were all that was left.Just when I believed I had cut myself off from the past for good, Nolan appeared in front of me.Finding me was not a challenge, so I was not surprised. I kept my composure and spoke to him like he was anyone else.Nolan's eyes went red. "Iris, I was wrong."I paused. Something flickered inside my chest, small and brief, and then it went still. It had nothing to do with me anymore. The look on my fac

Bryce nodded, not fully understanding. Those three months every year had been the easiest of his life, with no rules and no responsibilities. In his childish way, he had convinced himself that things were better without his mother around, that the three of them made a perfectly fine family on their own.The irony was suffocating.Nolan went through half a pack of cigarettes that night, and the absurdity of the past few years started closing in on him. He had actually gone along with Daphne's idea.Every year, his son swallowed mango at the risk of his own life, and the three of them ran off to play house with Daphne for three months. What did that make any of them? The worst part was the reason. Daphne got lonely and cold in winter. Meanwhile, he had forgotten that his own wife had depression, the kind that became worse when the cold set in.Nolan made a decision. He was going to set things right. He stayed up all night searching for any trace of Iris. Where would she go? She w

Third-Person POVNolan walked back into the room. Bryce peered around him, confused."Where is Mom?"Nolan could not put a name to what he felt, only that something was off. "Mommy went out. Daddy is going to go find her. Stay here with your mo… Daphne for a bit. I will be right back."It occurred to him, far too late, how far things had gone. Somewhere along the way, Bryce had sometimes started calling Daphne "Mom," and Nolan had never corrected him. He should have shut it down the first time he heard it.Nolan rushed out the door and searched everywhere, and there was no sign of Iris. She had never reacted like that before. There had been no hysterical confrontation, no breakdown, no tears. She had simply left in silence, as though the whole world had given up on her.She had gotten so thin. Now that he thought about it, Iris always became frighteningly gaunt during winter. It was only during their nine months together that she came back to life, experimenting with new recipe

I murmured something in reply while slipping my mother's urn into my bag.I made up an excuse about running an errand, grabbed our marriage certificate, and went to see a lawyer. The young attorney recognized the problem the moment she saw it."This is a fake marriage certificate. We have been getting quite a few of these lately. The good news is you do not need to file for divorce. And you can even sue him for forging a legal document."I was so exhausted I could barely stand. I must have looked pathetic. All those years, I had been nothing but a fool. I did not even have the right to confront him.The family I treasured was never mine. My mind was unraveling. The child I had nearly died bringing into the world was not mine either, not legally. He only happened to have a face that looked a little like mine. How could he do this to me?In my mother's final days, I had been the mistress she despised most, and the baby I delivered was the illegitimate child she loathed. When I go
