Chapter 2

Author: Quinn Woods
Julian came to stand beside my bed, panic flickering in his eyes. "Liv, I really did have company business yesterday. Driving Tessa to the hospital was an emergency. Don't read too much into it.

"Besides, it was only a minor procedure. You've already been through it three times. You should be able to handle it on your own by now. Stop sulking. Once things settle down at work, I'll take time off and stay home with you."

Tessa selected an apple from the basket, peeled it, and cut it in half. She naturally held one piece out to Julian. Without thinking, he leaned in and took it directly from her fingers, his lips brushing the back of her hand. She playfully punched his shoulder.

When they were done flirting, Tessa turned to me, linked her arm through mine, and brought the other half of the apple to my lips.

"Oh, Liv, Julian and I have been best friends forever. I'm practically one of the guys. With me keeping an eye on him, he'd never cheat. Relax."

The heavy perfume clinging to her made me gag. I instinctively pushed her hand away.

Juice seeped into the cut beneath her bandage. She hissed and let go, and the apple rolled across the floor.

I retched until my vision blurred. When I could finally see again, Julian was anxiously wiping Tessa's hand. "You can't get an open wound wet. Have the doctor rebandage it before it gets infected."

Tessa waved him off with practiced carelessness. "It's a scratch. You know me. I hate people who act delicate and make a production out of every little injury. It's embarrassing."

As she spoke, her gaze drifted toward me. I sat frozen.

"Julian, didn't you say you were allergic to every woman? Why can you touch her?"

Julian quickly released Tessa's hand. "Maybe it's because we grew up together. I've never really thought of her as a woman. I guess my brain doesn't register her that way, so I don't react."

Was that it? He thought of her as a man, so he booked a hotel room with her during my IVF procedure. He thought of her as a man, so he ignored me while panicking over a cut on her hand.

We had been married for three years. I had thought today would mark the beginning of our life with our first child. Instead, it marked the death of everything I had felt for him.

Numbness spread through me. I took out my phone and messaged my attorney. "Draft a divorce agreement for me."

Across the room, Tessa grimaced as her wound reopened. Pretending it was nothing, she said, "I'm going to the bathroom. Julian, stay here and make Liv feel better."

Julian frowned and grabbed her wrist. "You're going to act tough and change the bandage yourself again? Didn't that scar last time teach you anything? Stay here. I'll get a doctor."

He pressed both hands to her shoulders, firmly pushed her onto the couch, then strode out to find a physician.

Tessa sprawled comfortably across the couch and picked up the magazine Julian had been reading. When she caught me watching, she shrugged. "Sorry, Liv. I didn't know he was supposedly allergic to other women. Don't worry, though. We've always been like this. He doesn't react to anything I touch. But after three years of marriage, he doesn't make you keep your hands off everything, does he? Wow. That would be pathetic."

She raised an eyebrow and waved the magazine. "His female secretary brought this in, and he touched it without breaking out. He meets with women executives all the time too. Could Julian really be allergic to only you? That's extreme. It almost makes it seem like he thinks you're dirty. I'll give him a serious lecture later. He can't treat a woman like that..."

A deafening buzz filled my head. I could no longer hear the rest.

"Of course. I took a huge risk arranging her abduction. If I don't play the hero soon, someone else will find her. We have to move."You'll have to tolerate one thing. We need to keep our distance in public, understand? Otherwise, I won't be able to seduce her. Once she falls for me and I control her family connections, I'll bring you into my life openly.""Fine, Julian. But promise you'll never touch her. If you do, I'll expose everything we did today.""Obviously. After what those men did to her, I'd feel filthy touching her."Julian stared at me in horror. "Liv, how did you get that? We had that conversation inside a car that was later scrapped. No one could possibly have known..."I smiled faintly. "I'm Mrs. Sterling now. There's very little I can't uncover."With red-rimmed eyes, Julian dropped to one knee. "Liv, I was wrong. Maybe I had selfish motives in the beginning, but my feelings during these three years were real. I truly fell in love with you."Tessa secretly inter

Adrian wiped his shoe with disgust. "What made you think being a woman made you untouchable?"Once Tessa no longer dared to speak, he threw a thick file in front of them."I originally went undercover at your company only so I could stay close enough to protect Liv. I didn't expect you to make my work so easy. A basic audit uncovered embezzlement, money laundering, and fraudulent books. The fake ledgers were almost impressive, I'll give you that."Since you came all this way, consider this my hospitality. I've arranged a room for both of you in federal custody."Julian panicked when law-enforcement officers entered."Adrian Sterling, you can't arrest me. You stole my wife, destroyed my company, and now you're sending me to prison? I'll remember this. You think the Carver family has no power?"Adrian did not bother looking up. He motioned for the officers to take Julian and Tessa away.I had never imagined he would do so much for me. To protect me, he had willingly entered Julian

Julian crushed the divorce agreement and threw it into the trash. "Liv, you are going to explain this today. You still love me. You're only angry, right? I refuse to accept this divorce. You can't leave me."Tessa finally snapped and dragged at his arm. "Julian Carver, are you out of your mind? Have some self-respect. You're divorced. Come with me!"The door locked behind them. Adrian leaned against it, perfectly calm."Do you think Sterling property is a public lobby where anyone can walk in and out?"You've had enough time reminiscing with my wife. Is it my turn to speak?"Adrian crossed the room on long strides, smoothed the wrinkles from my blanket, and gently tucked my hair behind my ear."I picked up rice pudding on my way back from work. It used to be your favorite."Only after he saw me eating did Adrian slowly remove his suit jacket and sunglasses.Julian's eyes widened. "You... you're Adrian Sterling? Weren't you my driver?"Julian frowned in irritation. "So it reall

He closed his eyes like a man facing execution, grabbed my hand, and tried to slap himself with it.I pulled free. "Forget it."After three years of marriage, I had nearly died before my husband finally granted me the privilege of touching his face. How ridiculous.Forget it. He disgusted me. He was the filthy one.Julian was about to speak when his assistant rushed in. "Mr. Carver, it's over. Sterling Group canceled every agreement with us, and our cash flow has collapsed. They just held a press conference and announced that any company continuing to work with us will be barred from future Sterling contracts. Our investors are pulling out. We're headed for bankruptcy.""What?"Tessa reacted even faster than Julian. She grabbed the assistant by the collar. "Explain yourself. Julian is rich. He said just days ago that the company was opening another division. How can it suddenly be bankrupt?"Of course Tessa panicked. Julian had promised to make her president of that new division

Only now did I understand. I was the only person he despised. Every explanation had been an excuse designed to hide his disgust. When Adrian noticed me slowing down, he touched the back of his hand to my forehead. Once he confirmed the fever was gone, he lightly tapped my brow. "No wandering thoughts while you eat. Focus on your food."When I still paused after every sip, he took my bowl and tasted the soup himself. He frowned. "I knew it. It changed once it cooled. Don't drink this one. I'll get you a fresh bowl."I nodded obediently, almost like the sheltered young woman I had been five years earlier.Adrian went to the office to handle several matters while I remained in the hospital reading Sterling Group project proposals. My family never allowed me any meaningful role in Monroe Enterprises. Adrian wanted me to have something of my own, so he proposed giving me equity in Sterling Group and appointing me president of one of its subsidiaries. I used my recovery time to study th

When I woke again, I had been transferred to a private hospital. Adrian Sterling sat beside me, dark shadows beneath his eyes.My voice came out hoarse. "Why are you here?"He answered softly, "Your message felt wrong. I tracked your phone without permission and saw that you were at a hospital. I was afraid something had happened, so I came straight here. Thank God I arrived in time..."Adrian's eyes reddened as he spoke. A broad, six-foot-two man pressed his cheek against the back of my hand, looking as vulnerable as a child."Liv, you terrified me. I had only just gotten you back. I thought... I thought I was going to lose you again."I forced a smile as I felt the weakness of a body that had nearly died. "You won't. This time, I'm going to take better care of myself."Adrian did not have the courage to tell me that the baby had not survived. But after everything my body had endured, I already knew. The pregnancy had begun as an accident built on lies. Even if the child had li
