LOGINThe ink on his collarbone looked weathered, as if it had been etched into his skin years ago. If Jessa’s gossip held any weight, those digits—V25—had to be the birth date of the person who owned his heart.
I knew for a fact that Grant’s birthday fell in the spring, and the high elders of the Walker line were all winter-born. It certainly wasn't about me; my own birth-marking was in late autumn.
What could drive a man as frigid and calculating as Grant Walker to do something so permanent, so almost... sentimental? He must have been utterly consumed by this person. Suddenly, a wave of nauseating regret washed over me. Why hadn't I checked his status before that drunken moment of madness?
I had my own code. I didn't care how powerful or magnetic an Alpha was; I wasn't the type to interfere with someone else’s bond.
"Jessa," I whispered into the slate, "do you know anyone in his inner circle born on the twenty-fifth of August?"
"How would I know that? Westline Holdings is the apex predator of the corporate packs. Grant is the Alpha of the entire Walker lineage. I’m just a scavenger at the edge of his territory; I don't get invited to see his private records."
"You seem to know plenty when it suits you," I muttered.
"Wait!" Jessa’s voice spiked. "I think the pack’s lead counsel, Brooke Caldwell, has a summer birth-date. I saw her credentials once. She’s lethal, polished, and breathtaking. There were rumors everywhere when she accompanied Grant to the Solstice Gala. I’ll find a visual for you."
"Don't bother," I said, cutting her off.
The pieces fell into place with a sickening click. No wonder Grant had been so brutal at dinner. He was protecting his reputation. By treating me like dirt in front of the others, he was ensuring that if I ever tried to claim we’d shared a bed, I’d look like a delusional liar.
To lead a pack like Westline, you had to be a master of the long game.
I hung up, scrubbed my face, and forced myself to focus on the new territorial outlines on my screen. My mother’s apothecary bills were piling up, and I didn't have the luxury of pining over a man who viewed me as a liability.
I worked until my eyes burned, completely ignoring my slate as it flickered to life repeatedly in the shadows. It was only when I finally prepared to collapse into sleep that I saw the notifications. Three missed voice calls from Grant, placed hours ago, and a single text.
“Contact me the moment you are awake.”
My heart hammered. What did he want? A formal threat? A bag of gold to buy my silence? If I took a single coin from him, it would turn what happened into a transaction.
I started to type: Let’s act as though the ritual night never occurred. Your secrets are safe with me.
But as my thumb hovered over the send icon, I stopped. I didn't want a link to him at all. I deleted his contact entirely, severing the digital tie. That should give him the peace of mind he wanted.
I fell into a heavy, dreamless sleep, only to be jolted awake by Howard Pierce screaming through the speaker of my slate.
"Hand over the Westline Holdings project folders to Anna immediately! You're off the file!"
"Sir, I—" Before I could finish, the line went dead.
I scrambled out of bed, adrenaline surging. I needed to find the contract to hand it over, but as I tore through my luggage, the leather folder was nowhere to be found. I distinctly remembered having it when I arrived at the resort.
Then, the blood drained from my face.
The VTN ROOM.
In my panicked flight at dawn, I must have left the pack’s most sensitive documents right there on the nightstand. Which meant Grant Walker was currently holding my entire career in his hands.
Grant Walker POVI pull my big black truck over to the side of the grass road and turn my body fast, locking my dark eyes right onto Mars Reed. Our gazes catch each other in a big, silent wolf battle inside the quiet front seat.“My inner wolf has never told a single lie to your face, Mars,” I say, keeping my deep voice steady. My eyes look super hot, full of a real honesty that looks like it wants to pull Mars right down into the deep woods with me!Now Mars looks like he really regrets bringing up the bad bite marks on my skin. He sits there looking like he cannot find a way to stop this talk. He clears his throat super fast, acts like he is very calm, and turns his face away to look out the side window. “Alpha Walker, let us just stick to our territory land business, okay?”“Sure, territory business,” I say, gripping the wheel tight. “Your wolf is still working late at the tower tonight.”“Grant…”Mars bites his lip so hard his teeth look white, his face full of big anger. “What ki
Mars Reed POV“I… I have no idea what your wolf is talking about right now!” I stammer out loud, my face getting super hot as my eyes dart away from Grant’s intense, heavy stare.Grant leans his big body even closer to me, his handsome face sitting just inches away from my nose. “Then what exactly does your wolf mean when you shout about nibbling and biting, Mars?”Trying my absolute best to act cool and calm, I look over at the green pine trees instead of his face. “Alpha Walker, surely your new mate bond is not a cold and lonely one. We are both grown adult wolves here, so there is no reason for you to play dumb with me.”“Heh,” Grant lets out a deep, rumbling chuckle from his big chest, his dark eyes staying locked right onto my mouth. “Look at that. Your wolf is blushing super hard.”I stay completely lost for words, my tongue feeling like a heavy lump of dirt.Looking at the giant man standing over me on the grass, I feel like I do not even recognize his wolf anymore!Since when
Mars Reed POVI am sitting in the lobby of the Walker Enterprises Tower, and my wolf is shaking so hard because every single breath I take inside this big building feels completely full of danger.“He tells the whole world about his new mate bond today, for crying out loud!” I yell at the beta wolf, my fists clenching tight. “How can Grant justify this crazy move to his new male partner?”“Why do you not take that up with Alpha Walker yourself?” the beta wolf asks, looking away from me.The beta wolf knows that Grant does not like other pack members talking about his private mate business at all.“Forget it, I will not push you anymore,” I say, my shoulders dropping down because I feel so tired. “Thanks anyway.”“Do not mention it,” the beta wolf says, giving me a tiny smile before he looks down at his watch. “Alpha Grant should be walking out of his big pack meeting in about one hour. Just go wait for him down in his private truck parking spot under the trees.”“Just text the phone l
Mars Reed POV“You are the one who tells me I should never call you Alpha Walker when we are alone in the woods!” I yell back, my face getting super hot and my teeth clenching tight because I am so mad.My words hit Grant right in the chest, exactly how my wolf wants them to hit.“What are we to each other in the old days, Mars, and what are we to each other right now?” Grant asks, his face turning very smooth and cold like ice.“You…” I stomp my foot on the floor.Grant sits behind his big wood desk acting like he is just doing pack work, making it look like I am the only crazy wolf throwing a big tantrum in his den!“Mr. Reed, we are talking about territory business right now,” Grant says, crossing his big arms. “If your wolf has personal problems to solve with me, we can talk after the sun goes down and the pack work is done.”“I have absolutely nothing personal to talk about with you!” I scream, my eyes glaring at him like a wild animal. “Since you already make the big choice to m
Mars Reed POVGrant Walker drops that big piece of news right in the middle of the room, turns his huge body around, and walks straight out the door. He leaves the rest of the pack moving orders for the head of the HR den to finish up.I do not expect Grant to shout my name out loud in front of all these wolves. Back when we have our mate bond and live together, he never makes a big show like this inside the pack house. The most he ever does is wait for the sun to go down so we can walk back to our den together side by side.Today, he walks right into the waiting room and yells my name for everyone to hear.Is he trying to tell the whole East Star Pack that we have a very strange and deep past together? My hands shake and my heart goes super fast. Has his alpha wolf gone completely crazy?“Alpha Walker… he just said your actual name, didn't he?”I stand there completely frozen, and Austin looks even more mixed up than me. He blinks his eyes fast like he thinks he is seeing a ghost or
Mars Reed POVHuxley stands outside the clinic door and looks right at Brooke Caldwell with very cold eyes. He wants to see if she tells the truth or if she keeps telling bad lies to the pack. He thinks her dark secrets are tied to the giant truck crash that put his son in this bed.“Huxley, why do you look at me like that?” Brooke asks, and her voice shakes a little bit because she is scared. “Do you not trust my wolf?”“Should I trust a single word from your mouth?” Huxley says, stepping closer to her. He does not try to make his voice sound nice at all. “Brooke, you tell so many lies that you cannot even keep your stories straight anymore. When my boy first got brought into this clinic, you fell down on your knees. You told me you had a massive fight with him because of Grant Walker's mate problems, and that is why he ran out of the building. Now, all of a sudden, you tell me it was just about pack work?”Huxley spent many years dealing with tough alpha leaders in the woods, so he
I knew the depth of the shadow my father had cast over my mother’s soul.Did I carry my own scars? You bet I did. My father hadn't just left; he had systematically bled our family dry, shifting our pack assets into hidden accounts and using psychological warfare to push my mother toward a breaking
When Grant emerged from his quarters, he had shed his formal Alpha regalia for a casual white tunic and loose trousers. The change was startling; he looked years younger, like a high-ranking initiate ready to blow off steam on the training grounds.I, however, was busy calculating my escape. Being
I propped myself up on my elbows, staring at him. "You’re saying I’m moving into the Ridge? Permanently?""Is there a dispute?" he asked, his voice level. There was a massive dispute. Moving in meant our lives would be completely entwined. Every time I finished a rotation at the Walker Enterprises
The role of a liaison in a territorial firm might sound prestigious, but everyone in the pack knew the subtext: it was about baring your throat and pouring the wine.Grant’s words stung like a silver burn across my skin. Did he really think I was that type of wolf? Did he think Howard had served me
