Julianne sat at the bleachers with Lucien, their eyes focused in front of them, at the students playing. They didn’t speak much after he met her on her way to look for Marianne. Even though she was in haste, she knew she had unfinished business with Lucien, so she decided to give him the time. After today, there won’t be any confusion, she thought.

Lucien lowered his eyes down to his hands and after a few seconds, he turned his head to look at Julianne.

“Is he really worth it?” He asked her. H

“I can’t get angry even if I want to. Everything seems so unfair to me, and all I can do is nothing.”Julianne sounded so depressed. The skin on her forehead pulled as she stood and she gave her one last look before turning her feet toward the door.“It wasn’t me,” Velvet spoke before she would leave. “I didn’t do it, Julianne. You have to believe me. These prints…”Julianne stopped, and Cassian paid more attention to what she was about to say. He knows she isn’t the one, even though the evidence points to her as she is the only owner of the print.Velvet sighed and said, “It’s how I communicate with the other hunters. It’s my lead in the forest and their lead to me. I know I’ve done some bad things and I regret it too, but your mother, Marianne…and Fiona…it wasn’t me who killed them.”Julianne turned to look at her and didn’t seem to believe her. “It has been hard for me too, you know? Being born into a cult family like that where all they do is hunt down those that are slightly dif

  • Ashes and Bloodlines    Wrath of Ashblood

Velvet knew that Cassian doesn’t joke with his words, and that he meant it when he said he had no use of her. But even if that was true, she couldn’t let them return her to the hunters, not because of what she fears they might do to her, but because she fears what they were plotting.“You can’t do that,” she finally said with a slight plea. “Then watch me,” Cassian threatened further and started to head toward the door. She started to panic inside and before things would get out of hand, she moved her eyes to Julianne who started walking toward her. Then she started to apologize.“I’m really sorry, Julianne, for everything, and about Mari—Ah!”Cassian halted once his hand moved to the door handle and he turned. His brows pulled slightly when he realized what had just happened.Julianne was already consumed by rage and before Velvet would finish speaking, she landed a hard blow across her face.Velvet tasted blood and she felt a hard sting on her face. She moved her head and looked at

  • Ashes and Bloodlines    The face of betrayal

Julianne woke up with a start. Her chest heaved up and down and sweat broke out on her forehead. She wiped it off and breathed slowly, regulating her heart’s pace, before moving her eyes to the space next to her.She moved her hand over the sheet and noticed it was cold. How long has he been up? She thought. Her ears soon picked up some voices and she turned her gaze toward the door. She left the bed and walked toward it. When she opened it, her eyes fell first on Cassian, and next to him was Maximus. She could tell from how he spoke that there was a serious matter on ground. “Is something wrong?” she asked, causing them to turn to her at the same time. Both of them said nothing and just stared at her, making her look confused, until she saw Cassian’s jaw tighten. It immediately dawned on her that she was still in his shirt, and her thighs were very bare. She returned to the room without another word and shut the door immediately before scolding herself. The door opened again and s

Cassian led her out of the room and shut the door behind them. The hallway was quieter than before, making Julianne assume that the boys had gone to sleep or were resting in their rooms. She walked a step behind him and stared at the back of his head, unsure of where he was taking her. They finally stopped in front of a dark wooden door at the end of the corridor.Cassian pushed it open and told her, “This is the bathroom the boys on this floor use.” Then he added, “Everyone is in their rooms already, so you won’t be disturbed.”Julianne peeked inside carefully. The room was much larger than she had expected. A row of sinks stretched beneath a long mirror and beyond them were several shower stalls separated by stone walls. Earlier, she had feared that it would be an open space where there was no privacy at all.Surprisingly, everywhere was clean and there was a faint smell of fresh soap instead of the damp smell she had been expecting. She turned to Cassian and asked, “Are you sure th

  • Ashes and Bloodlines    One quiet night

Kaidan escorted her upstairs and opened the door to Maximus room. The conversation they were having inside was stopped abruptly and everyone turned their gaze to the door.“Sorry” Kaidan apologized. “I guess I should have knocked.”“It’s fine. We were done already.”Julianne’s eyes fell on Cassian who had just spoken and she felt something bubble inside of her, like a wash of relief on seeing that he was fine. The others in the room exchanged glances and understood the situation at once. As Cassian stood, ready to leave the room, someone else stood and spoke as he walked toward Julianne.“Look who it is! I guess I misunderstood you all this time. Well, forgive me for the troubles you encountered during your time in the university. I wouldn’t have messed with you if I had known sooner.”Julianne took a step back when he came closer and squeezed her hands at her sides. This was the boy that appeared to be the dangerous out of all the wolves and seem to have a higher authority over them

  • Ashes and Bloodlines    An unlikely alliance

The moment Julianne snapped her eyes open, she found herself in the one place she didn’t like to go—the infirmary. The smell of medicines made her feel nauseous and she raised her body to sit up.A lady came to attend to attend to her and while she was checking her vitals, Julianne asked, “How long have I been unconscious?”“Almost two days now.”She pulled her brows and couldn’t imagine she had been out for that long. The last thing she remembered was saving Cassian. Speaking about him, where was he now?She made to stand up, but the lady told her, “You can’t leave until someone comes to get you. At least, that was what I was told.” Then she went ahead to mumble to herself, “I’ve worked here for so long and I still get threatened by him. What a pain!”“Who?” Julianne asked. The lady raised her brows and questioned, “What do you mean who?”“Who told you to keep me here?”“Oh. It’s one of the boys known for causing the most of trouble. He was here not long ago and told me he’ll be send

  • Ashes and Bloodlines    Freshman party

Once classes ended on Friday morning, Julianne hurried to the dorm to pick out the dress she would wear for the freshman party that would take place by evening. Like Marianne said, she didn’t want to miss out on anything ‘fun’ so she wouldn’t be the one to regret it later. She emptied her wardrobe
