Chapter 2

Author: Strawberry
Adrian’s words landed lightly.

I sat before the mirror, studying my perfectly made-up face.

“A bridesmaid greeting guests with the engaged couple?”

I picked up a lipstick tube and twisted it open.

“Adrian, do you want the whole city to think the three of us are getting engaged?”

He stopped at the door and looked back, his brow furrowing again.

“Vivienne, stop with the sarcastic comments.” His patience was clearly gone. “Chloe is bored sitting alone in the lounge. What’s wrong with letting her get some air?”

“She’s helping us welcome guests. Why does that bother you so much?”

“It’s unnecessary.”

I set the lipstick down with a sharp click.

“This is my engagement party. I don’t need another person playing hostess.”

“You’re impossible.”

Adrian yanked the door open.

“Fine. Stay in here, then. Come out or don’t. I don’t care.”

The door slammed behind him.

I closed my eyes and took a slow breath.

Impossible?

He had not even seen what truly impossible looked like yet.

I took out my phone and called my mother.

“Mom, is everything ready?”

Her voice was calmer than I expected.

“It’s ready. Your father has already pulled out the money that needed to be pulled. We’re only waiting for you to make your move.”

“My dad…” I hesitated.

“He said his daughter has been humiliated, and he intends to make it right.”

She paused.

“Vivienne, are you sure? Once you expose them at this party, everyone in our circle will know.”

“I’m sure.”

I looked into my own eyes in the mirror.

“Mom, I put up with this for three years. I didn’t do it so I could put up with it forever.”

“Good.”

That was all she said before hanging up.

Then I texted my cousin.

'Is everything ready backstage?'

He replied almost immediately.

'Yep. Sound system and screens are tested. The USB is plugged in. We’re ready whenever you are.'

I slipped my phone back into my bag and stood.

After smoothing my skirt, I walked out of the dressing room.

At the far end of the hallway, Julian Grant was talking with several guests.

He was the head of Grant Holdings, and the business partner Adrian had been trying desperately to impress.

When he saw me, he gave a slight nod.

His gaze lingered on my face for a moment.

I nodded back, then walked straight toward the ballroom.

At the entrance, Adrian was greeting several older guests.

When he saw me, some of the tension left his face, though his irritation remained.

I stepped beside him, looped my arm through his, and smiled.

Chloe immediately moved in too, taking Adrian’s other side.

“Mr. Walker, we’re so glad you made it”

She greeted a middle-aged man as though they were old friends and even reached past me to offer her hand.

Mr. Walker hesitated.

His gaze shifted from me to Chloe, clearly unsure.

“And you are?”

“I’m Adrian’s closest friend, Chloe Bennett.” She beamed. “And I’m one of the bridesmaids today.”

Adrian did not correct her.

Instead, he smiled.

“That’s right, Mr. Walker. Chloe has helped me with a lot of work over the years. I hope you’ll look out for her going forward.”

I watched the two of them work together like they had rehearsed it.

Then Adrian’s mother came over and took Chloe’s hand, smiling warmly.

“Chloe, you look gorgeous today. You picked the perfect dress. It makes you look radiant.”

She turned to me, her smile fading slightly.

“Vivienne, isn’t your dress a little too plain? It doesn’t feel grand enough for an engagement party.”

I looked at the woman who was supposed to become my mother-in-law.

She clearly had no idea what her son had been doing behind her back.

“Adrian, you disgust me.”I did not bother hiding my contempt.“Do you really think I ended our engagement because of Chloe?”He froze.“I ended it because you’re selfish, dishonest, and incapable of taking responsibility for anything.”I spoke slowly, one word at a time.“The second something goes wrong, you blame a woman. Do you think throwing Chloe under the bus will make me look back at you?”“Keep dreaming.”I pressed stop on the recorder sitting on my desk and slid it toward him.“I recorded what you just said about Chloe using the pregnancy to threaten you.”Adrian’s face went white.“You… what are you going to do?”“Nothing.” I smiled faintly. “I just think Chloe would be very touched to hear it.”“After all, she’s your loyal best friend. The one who was willing to throw everything away for you.”“Vivienne, you can’t do this!” His voice cracked. “You’ll ruin me!”“Me?”I stood and walked toward him.“Adrian, the person who ruined you was you.”I pressed the in

I did not waste time explaining.I dropped the folder of documents into the group chat. The title read:'Adrian Cole and Chloe Bennett: Three Years of Hotel Stays and Financial Transfers'The first file contained their hotel records from the past three years, timestamped down to the minute. The second showed Adrian’s transfers to Chloe, from designer bags costing a few thousand dollars to a six-figure down payment on her sports car.The third was a screenshot of a post Chloe had uploaded three days earlier. It showed a staged, alarming photo and a caption that read:'If everyone thinks this is my fault, maybe disappearing is the only way I can prove I’m innocent.'I typed:'To all: I’m sorry today’s engagement party ended this way. These are the records of Adrian Cole and Chloe Bennett’s relationship. As Adrian’s former fiancée, I thought the Cole family deserved the facts.Chloe also appears to be in an unstable emotional state. The Cole family may want to check on her bef

The car rolled through the rain, leaving Adrian behind in the storm.I lowered the window just enough to see him in the rearview mirror. He stood soaked to the bone in the middle of the downpour, one hand over his face as he finally broke down. Then I rolled the window back up, shutting out the wind, the rain, and the sound of him crying my name.My phone buzzed. It was a message from my mother.'We saw. Your father says he’ll handle the rest.'I replied with two words.'Thank you.'Then I opened a family group chat without Adrian in it.My mother had created it three days ago. It included my parents, Adrian’s parents, and the relatives from both sides who actually mattered.I typed:'To all: I’m sorry today’s engagement party ended this way.I have organized the full evidence and will send it here shortly. My parents will also be ending all business partnerships with the Cole family. Please take note.'My mother replied at once.'I support Vivienne’s decision.'My fath

“Vivienne, listen to me. That recording was edited. It’s fake. Someone is trying to set me up!”“Was the dash-cam data edited too?”I looked at him without an ounce of warmth.“Yesterday, three o’clock. The mountain road outside the city. Your car.”“Do you want me to put the route history on the screen too?”The last trace of hope drained from Adrian’s face. His knees buckled. He dropped to the stage.“Vivienne, I was wrong. I made a stupid mistake. She came onto me!”He pointed at Chloe, trying to throw every bit of blame onto her.“I only love you!”Chloe jerked her head up, staring at him in disbelief.“Adrian, what did you just say? You were the one who dragged me into that car yesterday!”“Shut up!” His eyes went red. “You seduced me! You knew I was getting married, and you still wouldn’t leave me alone!”“Me?” Chloe shot to her feet, as though he had struck a nerve. “Adrian, say that again with a straight face.”“Who texted me in the middle of the night saying, ‘V

“Careful!”Adrian cried out and instinctively tossed aside the microphone, catching Chloe securely in his arms. She collapsed against his chest as the ring box slid off the tray and hit the floor with a sharp clatter.“Adrian, I’m sorry. I was just nervous,” Chloe said softly, leaning into him.“It’s okay.
