Once the door closes and I’m left alone, I take a breath and count to ten.
I listen for footsteps and there are none.
I run.
I run as fast as I can down the dark hall, it feels like it goes on forever, and my heart jumps into my chest the moment I hear a guard say, “Check that way, I swear I heard something.”Hide. I have to hide.A door!
Oh, please be an empty room, I hope as I open and slip inside. The light from the TV momentarily blinds me, and I blink rapidly as I try to adjust to it. A low voice drawls, “Who are you?”My head snaps to a man who is standing, impeccably dressed, with his arms crossed. His blonde, practically white hair reminds me of my own, and my throat dries up as I see him. But then, something on the TV catches my eye. Elyria. The announcer drones on about her attributes, but the words, “Ideal size for birthing babies,” catch my attention as I snap, “What?!”
The man’s gaze doesn’t move from me as I’m now lost in my own world. What the hell are they doing? They just said someone could use her as a personal toy! No, no, no! Not my sister. She hasn’t done anything to deserve this kind of treatment.
“You look just like her.”
I can’t help the attitude that slips out as I roll my eyes and say, “Duh, she’s my sister.”He seems amused by me. I’m grateful he doesn’t come closer. I’m still focused on the screen and need to know what else happens. But… I know how this ends. Don’t I?
She’ll end up at the Eclipse Pack. The Alpha looked nice. It will be a good thing.
“Why are you in my suite?” The low voice seems… even deeper. More possessive.
Shit.My eyes snap over to the man, and I murmur, “I’m sorry, sir, I seem to have lost my way.”
In the background, the announcer continues, “We have a top bid. We’ve got $250,000 for Elyria Trainer going once!”No, Elyria!I know what’s happening, I try to remind myself. I know the cards that fate has dealt her.
But still… hearing the way they described her and seeing her get purchased is a new kind of horror entirely.
There’s a loud sniff, and the man takes a step closer to me, his footsteps echoing in the room, and his voice sounds almost amused as he says, “I can smell the fear rolling off of you. Mixed in with your scent, it’s an odd smell. Bittersweet, almost like grapefruit.”
My nose crinkles as he happens to mention the one fruit I detest, and I say, “That is the weirdest-”My words are cut off by the intensity of his green eyes. He has a lazy smirk that shows off a small dimple in his left cheek, but his eyes flicker away from me and to the screen as the announcer says, “Elyria is SOLD to the Eclipse Pack!”I snap my head to the screen, my heart pounding, although I already knew that was where she was going.
She’s going to be okay. She has to be. It doesn’t matter that they described her the same way they would a whore. She’ll be okay.I have to remember the Alpha from my vision. He cared for her. I could tell.
I have to go by my intuition. There’s nothing else that can reassure me.
They’re bringing the next girl up.
I’m running out of time.
I have to make it out of this building.
I look back at the man, “I’m sorry. I’m sorry for being in here, but I must go!”
There’s no opportunity for him to respond to me as I yank the door open and rush out. I need to get away. This is my last chance.I swear, I can hear his footsteps as he rushes towards the door.
I run even faster, desperate for my one chance at escaping this auction.
My heel breaks, and I curse as I kick it off, knowing that it will slow me down. I rush back the way I came, then turn down a different hallway, only to run straight into a guard.
Fuck. My luck ran out.He grips me and leads me back to the main room, where André and others are waiting for me.If looks could kill, I’d be six feet under with the way André is glaring at me. I broke his trust and took advantage of it.
A woman in white is next to him, huffing in anger, “We don’t have time for this. Let’s get her out there!”He grabs my arm, holding on just slightly too hard to my wrist. He murmurs, “You’re lucky they didn’t have time to punish you.”
I know he’s right. I can’t focus on it, though. They don’t realize I broke my heel; I keep my bare foot up in a high-heeled position. No one can know how badly I’ve fucked up.He ushers me to the stage, and the announcer rants off facts about me just like he did with Elyria. Except, at the end, he focuses on adding the information that I am a seer. He raves about how useful it would be to have someone who could see the future right next to you.
The bidding war begins, the lights show all the people interested in me, and dread fills my stomach.
The announcer made me sound more impressive than I am. That’s not going to be a good thing for me. Lots of Alphas are known for having a temper. My jaw almost drops when I hear, “And for a whopping 3 million dollars, Ms. Raina Trainer is SOLD to the Twilight Pack!”My foot falters for a moment, unable to hold my weight as my mind reels from this price. Elyria wasn’t sold for even a quarter of that!I get back on my tiptoes, trying to pretend that I didn’t drop as I get led off stage.ElyriaEven though we decide to stay in for a chill night, I still want to look good. This is the first time Atlas has ever asked me for a date, and I already feel like, because we’re staying at home, I’m blowing the opportunity I have with him.“Elyria is mine.” The words keep replaying in my head on repeat. He claimed me. He wants me. Butterflies swarm my belly, and I want to go be closer to him.I finally settle on a pair of sleep shorts with a t-shirt and one of Atlas’s lightweight hoodies. With the hood up, I’m able to hide most of the marks on my neck from Atlas’s constant sucking and nippling during our time together.I walk to the living room, where Dahlia is already prepped on the couch with Conrad sitting beside her, his arm around her as he pulls her closer into his chest. Food is practically overflowing off of the coffee table, and with a soft laugh, I ask, “What is all of this?”Suddenly, Atlas’s arms are wrapped around me, and he pulls my back against his chest. He leans
RainaDinner is a tense and awkward affair. The council watches me closely, like they are observing every small detail about me, such as the way I lift my fork. I let out a low breath, and Malcolm places his hand on my knee, squeezing it in a reassuring manner as he looks at the group of men along with the three girls they brought.Sophie doesn’t look at us often, instead focusing on her dinner; the other two girls, Olivia and Stacey, both will randomly glare at me.The small talk is meaningless; it’s like a buzzing in my ears. My mind was too focused on Sophie and the things she revealed.Do Olivia and Stavey have abilities as well? If they do, then what are they? Were they both a part of Crucible Academy? Why does this school have so many secrets? There’s a tap on my arm, and I glance back to see Annie beside me. She has a soft smile on her face as she asks, “Would you like to go for a walk with me?”Her eyes flicker to Malcolm. I glance in his direction, noticing the tightness of h
ElyriaAtlas grins at me; it’s so broad and wholesome that it’s contagious, and I find myself mirroring his expression. He holds my hand, leading me to the door, not caring about anything in the world. I ask, “Should I get changed? Something more- I don’t know, date-appropriate? What are we going to go do?”After the heavy make-out and touching session, I feel so disheveled that I know anyone who sees us will know exactly what we were doing. I want to change and feel refreshed. His amber eyes roam over me, lingering on my neck with a small smirk, and he nods, “Yeah, you’ll probably want to cover those marks.”A small blush covers his cheeks as he moves an arm back to rub his neck, looking sheepish. It’s so peculiar to see him like that as he continues, “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to give you so many hickies.”Atlas moves his hand to the small of my back as he leads me out of the office and towards my room. Once we’re there, I head straight to the bathroom to see what he’s talking about.
RainaIt’s almost dinner time, and the council has not left the office that they requested. Malcolm is tense; he wants to interrupt, I know it. But it’s not the wise thing to do, so he is quietly pacing, slowly unraveling.“Malcolm,” I say his name softly, and his head snaps towards me, more on edge than I would like him to be. I give him a soft smile as I reassure him, “It will all be okay.”He nods his head, and I ask, “Should we head to dinner?”He looks at the time and says, “Shit, babe, why didn’t you say something sooner? We haven’t eaten since breakfast.”I shrug, “I’m on edge too; I wasn’t hungry earlier.”His eyes roam over me, too concerned for my well-being. I walk over, placing my hand on his arm. “Malcolm, stop worrying. I’m fine, and we have too many other things to worry about at the moment.”He brushes some hair behind my ear and cups my face as he breathes deeply, “I just don’t like the way they’re lurking around. I don’t like that they’re plotting against me, against
ElyriaAtlas stands up, his body still between my legs, his length pressed against me. There’s a scowl on his face because of the interruption, and it takes everything within me not to whine in frustration. His eyes lock onto mine as he calls out to whoever is waiting on the other side of the door, “Wait a minute.”He lifts me up, continues to stare deeply into my eyes, I almost think we’re going to kiss again, but he clears his throat, keeping his tone low as he says, “Get dressed, El. Then sit back with your book.”He leans in closer, his lips brushing against mine as he states, “We can continue this later.”My body flushes with excitement, and I nod as I get off his desk. I put my romper back on while he puts on his shirt. Once I’m ready, I walk back to the loveseat and curl up with a book and a blanket. My eyes flicker up to him, watching as he collects himself, suddenly being the refined and dignified man I know. His shoulder straightens, his face is devoid of any emotion as he
RainaThe three girls, Olivia, Stacey, and Sophie, glare at me when Malcolm introduces me. I plaster a picture-perfect Luna-like smile and look over the group as I say, “It’s a pleasure to meet you all.”One of the men with a receding hairline is turning red; the flush spreads across his face. He looks familiar. His voice is strained as he says, “Nice to meet you, Luna.” His eyes flicker to Malcolm as he asks, “Alpha, would we be able to trouble you for an office to meet? The council needs to speak privately about our upcoming plans.”There’s no amusement in Malcolm’s gaze as he looks at the council and the three girls. He nods his head slowly, “Yes, Gamma Lee can lead the way. Will the girls be joining you, or do I need someone to lead them to their rooms?”The way one of the girls still looks at Malcolm like he’s a hunk of meat up for grabs makes me on edge. I want them watched; I don’t want them to be free to roam.I don’t notice how tightly I’m holding Malcolm’s hand; I don’t noti
