I died building a fortress for people who wanted me in a grave. At twenty-eight, I was the perfect martyr. I sacrificed my Ivy League seat at 18 so my stepsister could shine, bled my inheritance dry to keep my family afloat, and waited a decade for a ring from a man who valued me like a stock option. My reward? A glass of poison and a front-row seat to my own murder. Now, I’m eighteen again. It’s the day before I’m scheduled to surrender my future, but the perfect saint they know is dead. This time, I’m keeping the crown, the money, and the man. Not for love, but because fifty billion dollars is more than enough to buy back my revenge. There’s just one problem: Marcus. In my past life, he was a calculating glacier. A man I thought loved me and only found out who he was on my dying bed, except in this life, everything I know about him seems different.

Chapter 1

The Sound Of A Breaking Barrier

The silence in the hall deepened, the kind of heavy, expectant quiet that precedes a storm. On the dais, the Rector of Harvard Business School adjusted his glasses, the parchment in his hand crinkling into the microphone like a sudden burst of static.

"Every year," he began, his voice resonant and aged,

"We witness brilliance. But rarely do we witness a transformation that redefines the very standard of this institution. This year’s recipient of the Distinguished Master’s Award did not just excel, they rewrote the curve. They proved that grit is the ultimate currency."

I kept staring at my hands. Good for them, I thought. Whoever they are, I hope they know how lucky they are.

"It is my distinct honor to announce the Best School Master’s Graduand... Ashley Vance."

The world stopped.

I stood up, my legs feeling like they were made of water. Every step toward the stage felt like I was walking through a dream. The wooden stairs creaked under my feet, a grounding, earthy sound in the midst of the grandiosity. When I reached the Rector, his smile was warm, genuine. He handed me the heavy, glass-encased award, and for a second, the weight of it nearly tipped me over.

"Well deserved, Ms. Vance," he whispered.

"The world isn't ready for you."

I turned to the microphone. The applause died down, replaced by an intensity that made the air feel electric. I scanned the gallery until I found her. Lurii was standing, her hands pressed to her mouth.

I cleared my throat, my voice trembling only slightly.

"I didn't get here because I’m a genius," I said, the words echoing off the high, vaulted ceilings.

"I got here because someone loved me enough to let me fail until I finally learned how to fly. This award isn't mine. It belongs to my sister, Lurii."

I lifted the glass trophy toward her, a silent vow passing between us over the heads of the most powerful people in the country.

"Lurii, look at this," I said, my voice growing stronger, more certain.

"This is just the beginning. I promised you the world, and tonight, I finally found the key. There is so much more to come. I am never going to stop until you have the best of everything."

The second wave of applause was even louder than the first. As I walked off the stage, my head was finally held high. The nothing I expected from the night had turned into a milestone that changed everything. I felt invincible. I felt like I could finally breathe.

The after-party was a blur of expensive perfume and the clinking of crystal. We were at the Charles Hotel, and the jovial mood I had felt on stage had morphed into a genuine, intoxicating happiness. I was actually laughing. I was holding a glass of champagne that cost more than my first car, and for once, I didn't feel like an impostor.

I had spent the last hour dodging recruiters from the Big Three firms and shaking hands with people whose names were usually written in bold on the Wall Street Journal. But my eyes kept drifting to the door, looking for Marcus.

Marcus, my boyfriend, the man who had been my rock during the final stretch of my thesis. He was a rising star in his own right, a hedge fund manager with a reputation for being ruthless but brilliant. He had promised to meet me here to celebrate. I wanted to see the pride in his eyes. I wanted him to tell me he knew I could do it.

"Ashley! There she is!"

I turned to see a group of my classmates, their faces flushed with drink and success.

"The giant-slayer! Have you decided which corner office you’re taking yet?"

"I’m taking the weekend off first," I laughed, feeling lighter than air.

"I promised Lurii a trip to the coast. The career can wait until Monday."

"I wouldn't be so sure about that," a voice cut through the chatter.

The group parted, and the temperature in my immediate vicinity seemed to drop ten degrees.

It wasn't Marcus.

Standing there, leaning casually against a marble pillar with a glass of dark scotch in his hand, was Julian Vane.

My breath hitched. If Marcus was a rising star, Julian Vane was the sun, blinding, distant, and capable of scorching anything that got too close.

He was the CEO of Vane Enterprises, and more importantly, he was Marcus’s sworn professional rival.

Julian was beautiful in a way that felt dangerous. His suit was charcoal, tailored so perfectly it looked like armor. His eyes were a piercing, icy blue that seemed to strip away every layer of pretense I was wearing.

"Mr. Vane," I said, my smile faltering just a fraction.

"I didn't realize you attended HBS events."

"I don't," he said, his voice a low, smooth baritone that vibrated in my chest.

"I attend talent searches. And tonight, the search ended on that stage."

He took a slow step toward me, ignoring the stunned silence of my classmates. He didn't look at them. He only looked at me, his gaze intense and unwavering.

"You dedicated your award to your sister," he said, his tone unreadable.

"Most people in this room would have dedicated it to their own ego. You spoke about grit. You spoke about building a fortress."

"I meant what I said," I replied, squaring my shoulders.

"I know you did. Which is why I’m not going to waste your time with a business card or a call my secretary routine." He set his scotch down on a passing waiter’s tray without looking away from me.

"I’m looking for a Head of Acquisitions. Someone who doesn't just understand numbers, but understands the stakes of losing. Someone who is hungry."

I felt a chill run down my spine.

"Mr. Julian, surely you know who I’m seeing. Marcus and I"

"I don't care who you’re sleeping with, Ashley," he interrupted, his voice dropping to a silk-wrapped blade.

"I care about who you’re working for. Marcus will give you a comfortable life and a respectable desk. I will give you the keys to the city. I will give you the power to make sure that sister of yours never has to dream of a better life again, because she’ll already be living it."

He stepped closer, invading my personal space just enough to make my heart race for an entirely different reason.

"Come work for me. Start tomorrow. Name your salary. Name your terms."

I looked around the room, desperately searching for Marcus, but he was nowhere to be found. I was standing in the center of a golden cage, and the man holding the door open was the one person my boyfriend hated most in the world.

"Why me?" I whispered.

Julian pulled back, a ghost of a smirk playing on his lips.

"Two reasons. One, because I like taking things that Marcus thinks belong to him. Two, frankly, you're the only thing in this room worth buying."
