CHAPTER 45

REMAINDERS OF MY MOTHER

CHIARA

"Shit."

That single word was enough to spike the rate of my heartbeat again. I already knew the reality of the situation before she said anything.

"What is it?" Lucien snapped.

"I'm sorry boss, I was unable to get to the panel on time before he circled back to the desk. The old man is settled into a chair right next to the bookshelf, I can't get past him without being seen."

Why the hell is he picking tonight to plant himself in that chair like a guard

CHAPTER 92A GIRL WHO DOESN'T EXIST LUCIENIt was a week later before Marco came back. During that one week, everything felt like hell. I watched her act like the way Valentina would. Not that I’m saying she’s not Valentina, but it was like after we went to her home, something in her woke up. She still behaved like the woman who had arrived at my estate, but there were subtle differences now. Small adjustments that most people would ignore. I didn’t. Her clothing changed. She used to dress comfortably but now, it’s like every minute is a fashion runway for her. Her clothes, her hair, her body. God I missed holding her, touching her. Fucking her. But I couldn’t do any of that till I’m sure of who she is. My mind was in multiple places and I still found myself wanting to be wrong. That she was actually Valentina Rossi and not the twin, Chiara Rossi. Later that day, while going through some documents in the cargo shipments for the day, Marco walked holding some files and looking as p

CHAPTER 91WHAT COULDN’T BE EXPLAINED CHIARA I woke up the next morning feeling so exhausted. Last night I could barely sleep. It was like the thought of having Lucien find out about me not being Valentina kept me from not sleeping. I had nightmares about it. So today, I decided to do the only thing I could think of. Be Valentina. I stood up from the bed and went to the closet. I looked through the clothes. I needed to be Valentina, so if I were to wear something, it would be like Valentina. I would want to make it obvious so Lucien would know. That would make me even more suspicious. I walked through the handful of clothes I had but I could see the perfect one to wear. I mean they were all perfect if I was Valentina but I’m not and I couldn’t really do the things she could do easily or wear clothes she could. So finally, I settled for something more simple still under Valentina’s style. A black skinny jeans with a black crop top and black leather booths. It seemed pretty good. I

CHAPTER 90THINGS THAT DON’T ADD UPLUCIEN“I’ll see you later.” It was the last thing I said to her before entering my office. I needed to think. A lot of things aren’t making sense right now. How can someone, who was said to be a vain person, suddenly have a different personality all of a sudden. It didn’t make any sense at all. A knock came in. I was too tired and lost in thought to respond but the door opened anyway. And seeing as it was opened without my permission, I knew who it had to be. “You know, you need to wait for a response from me before you open the door. What if I blow your brains out without knowing it was you?”“Don’t kid yourself. You know the only person who would come into your space without a response from you is me.” He responded lightly, a smile forming on his lips. I smiled at that reasoning. Then suddenly the atmosphere thickened. “Did Vincenzo tell you anything?” Marco asked, the playful tone from earlier gone, replaced with the voice of a hard man. My mo

CHAPTER 89THE THINGS HE DIDN’T SAYCHIARAThe drive back to the estate passed in complete silence. Lucien sat across from me, exactly as he had on the journey here. A file rested in his hands, and every few minutes he turned another page with the same calm precision as though nothing unusual had happened that afternoon.I watched him only when I was certain he wasn’t looking. He never looked up. Not even once. Like I didn’t matter and honestly, that should have reassured me. Instead, it made me more anxious. My thoughts kept returning to that room. To every question he had asked. This room isn’t what I expected. It doesn’t feel like the person people describe. That’s why I notice things. Each sentence replayed in my mind differently now. At the time they had sounded like observations. Now they felt like warnings. I looked out of the window and watched Milan disappear behind us. Was he suspicious? Or was I imagining it because I already knew the truth? That was the problem with lies.

CHAPTER 88THINGS THAT DIDN’T MATCHLUCIENI didn’t expect to find her asleep. When I opened the door, she was lying on the bed, sleeping. For a second, I didn’t move. People usually changed when they returned home. They feel relaxed, become louder, more careless. And she… She looked more tired. Her eyes opened suddenly and she sat upright immediately. Too alert for somebody waking up in a safe place. She looked around once before realising where she was and looked at me. “Sorry.”I looked at her. “For what?” Her eyes moved away immediately. No answer.Apologies usually came from one of two places. Guilt or habit. Most people apologised after conflict, after mistakes, after consequences. She apologised like breathing. Quietly and automatically, before I had even decided whether there was anything to apologise for.My eyes moved to the book resting against her. “You fell asleep.” She nodded once. Then silence settled between us. I looked around the room before returning my attention to

CHAPTER 87THINGS MEN PRETEND NOT TO SEELUCIENVincenzo smiled and I smiled back but neither of us meant it. The conversation continued because that was what people like us did. Nobody said what they wanted to say immediately. You circled it first, measured the room and tested the reactions from them .Vincenzo picked his cup back up and leaned into the chair. “Business has been unstable lately.” I looked at him. He continued casually, “Routes changing, people becoming difficult.”I took another sip. “That happens.” His eyes stayed on me.“You’ve managed well.” I looked at him. Praise. I scoffed inwardly. Like I would need the praises of a backstabbing bastard. “You sound surprised.”He laughed. “This is me, being surprised. I’m honestly impressed by how far you’ve gone.” I didn’t respond to that. There was no need to pretend that I needed his approval. His fingers moved once against the cup before he spoke again. “Some people expand too quickly.” I watched him closely. “Some people
