Cassian was bleeding.

Lyra saw it before he did.

A black cut sliced across his ribs where one of the dead kings had driven rusted steel beneath his guard. Blood soaked through his shirt, dark against dark.

He kept fighting anyway.

Like pain was just another room he’d learned to walk through.

The crypt had become a slaughterhouse.

Broken stone littered the floor. Tomb lids lay shattered. Candles burned sideways in the wind pouring from the pit beneath the throne. Ancient kings moved through the shadows with rotted weapons raised high while Lucien cut them down one by one with silver flashing in both hands.

Still they kept rising.

Still the woman beneath the throne smiled.

“When he dies,” she’d said.

And Lyra couldn’t stop hearing it.

Cassian drove his blade through a dead king’s chest and tore it free.

Black blood sprayed across the throne.

The corpse collapsed.

Then twitched.

Then rose again.

“Cassian!” Lucien shouted. “They’re tethered to the pit!”

Cassian kicked another corpse backward.

“I noticed.”

Lyra’s pulse hammered painfully against her ribs.

The Hollow Queen’s heart.

Inside her.

Impossible.

But every beat under her skin answered the woman below.

Every pulse shook the stone.

The dead kings weren’t bound to the crypt.

They were bound to her.

A corpse lunged for Cassian’s blind side.

Lyra moved without thinking.

Shadow burst from her hand like a whip and snapped the corpse sideways into a pillar hard enough to break its spine.

It dropped.

Didn’t rise.

Silence hit around her.

Even the dead seemed to pause.

Cassian turned sharply.

Blood streaked his jaw. Rainwater still clung to his hair. His chest rose hard beneath the torn black fabric.

Their eyes met.

Something shifted.

The corpse at Lyra’s feet remained still.

Not moving.

Lucien noticed immediately.

“Well,” he breathed. “That’s useful.”

Lyra barely heard him.

The Hollow Queen was inside her head again.

Use me.

“No.”

Kill for him.

“No.”

Or watch him die.

Another dead king slammed Cassian against a crypt pillar.

Stone cracked.

Cassian hit the floor hard.

His sword skidded across the black marble.

Lyra’s breath stopped.

The corpse king raised its blade overhead.

Then froze.

Every dead king in the crypt froze.

All of them turning toward Lyra at once.

Waiting.

Listening.

Obeying.

Cassian pushed himself upright slowly, blood running down one side of his mouth.

“Lyra,” he said.

The warning in his voice was immediate.

Don’t.

But Lucien saw the truth first.

“You can command them.”

Lyra stared at the dead kings.

At their empty sockets.

Their rusted crowns.

Their bent knees.

Her stomach turned.

“No.”

“Lyra.”

Cassian’s voice again.

Closer now.

Calmer.

“Listen to me.”

The Hollow Queen whispered over him.

Make them kneel.

Power rose hot through Lyra’s body.

Like floodwater behind a cracked dam.

She felt the dead.

Every broken bone.

Every lingering thread of shadow stitched through ancient flesh.

All waiting for her.

One word.

That was all it would take.

One command.

Her voice shook.

“Kneel.”

Every dead king dropped instantly.

Armor crashing against stone.

The sound echoed like thunder through the crypt.

Even Lucien went still.

Lyra swayed where she stood.

The effort felt like someone peeling open her ribs from the inside.

Cassian reached her before she hit the floor.

His arms locked around her waist as her knees buckled.

Warm.

Solid.

Real.

The contact hurt.

Magic surged sharply through both of them.

Cassian sucked in a breath through clenched teeth.

Their visions collided again.

Lyra saw herself seated on a throne made of bone and black stone.

A crown fused to her skull.

Blood running down her neck.

Cassian kneeling before her.

Not as king.

As sacrifice.

Then the vision shifted—

Cassian chained in darkness.

His hands bloodied from clawing against stone.

Begging someone unseen:

Take me instead.

The vision shattered.

Lyra gasped and grabbed his shirt.

Cassian’s forehead pressed briefly against hers as both of them fought for breath.

Neither spoke.

They didn’t need to.

Lucien broke the moment first.

“I hate interrupting whatever this is.”

Cassian’s hand remained braced against Lyra’s back.

“Then don’t.”

Lucien ignored him and looked toward the pit.

The woman beneath the throne was climbing higher now.

One pale hand against cracked stone.

Black hair dragging across marble like spilled ink.

Silver eyes bright with hunger.

The kneeling dead kings trembled.

Not from obedience.

From fear.

That chilled Lyra most.

Even the dead feared her.

The Hollow Queen smiled.

“My heart remembers him.”

Cassian stepped in front of Lyra instantly.

Sword back in hand.

“You don’t get closer.”

The woman laughed softly.

A beautiful sound.

Rotting underneath.

“You wear your father’s face.”

Cassian stiffened.

Lucien too.

The woman’s gaze slid between them.

“I remember both your bloodlines screaming.”

Lyra saw Cassian’s shoulders lock.

There.

A weak spot.

Father.

Before anyone could react, the crypt ceiling cracked open above them.

Stone rained down.

One of the upper pillars collapsed.

The entire chamber groaned.

“It’s coming down,” Lucien shouted.

The pit widened.

Shadow poured out like floodwater.

The Hollow Queen rose further.

Half her body visible now.

Bare shoulders. Pale skin streaked with black veins. A cavity in her chest where a heart should be.

And Lyra felt it answering inside herself.

Beat.

Beat.

Beat.

Cassian grabbed Lyra’s wrist.

“We’re leaving.”

“What about her?”

“She’s not fully awake.”

“Yet,” Lucien muttered.

Another crack split through the ceiling.

The throne broke apart.

The dead kings began screaming.

Not with mouths.

With magic.

Thousands of voices trapped inside bone.

Cassian dragged Lyra toward the stairwell while Lucien covered them.

They reached the first steps—

Then Lyra heard it.

A whisper behind her ear.

Closer than breath.

“If he dies… I become whole.”

Lyra spun.

The Hollow Queen was gone from the pit.

Vanished.

Only darkness remained.

Then Cassian staggered beside her.

He dropped to one knee.

His sword clattered across stone.

Black veins spread beneath the skin of his neck like spilled ink.

His eyes lifted toward Lyra—

And one of them had turned completely silver.

No one breathed. The shattered fragments of the Bone Crown hung above the anvil, each silver shard angled toward the First Bearer with quiet, undeniable purpose. White fire curled around the ancient figure without consuming it, washing pale light over the smooth, featureless face where eyes should have been.Lyra's heartbeat pounded against her ribs. This wasn't how she had imagined this moment. The Crown had drawn her across kingdoms, through betrayal, bloodshed, and impossible trials. It had led her beneath the mountain, into the heart of the Forge. So why wasn't it choosing her?Astrid stepped forward until she stood between Lyra and the First Bearer, her sword held ready."Stay where you are."The ancient figure didn't respond. It remained motionless beneath the drifting fragments, waiting with the patience of something that had measured time in centuries. The faceless smith broke the silence."The Crown does not seek the strongest."His voice rolled through the forge with the ste

The pale hand rose through the white fire without disturbing a single flame.Long, slender fingers closed around the floating fragments of the Bone Crown with quiet certainty, as though reclaiming something that had never truly been lost. Black veins pulsed beneath skin the color of old ivory, branching from the wrist to each fingertip like fractures spreading beneath frozen glass.Steel hissed from scabbards.Astrid moved without hesitation, placing herself between Lyra and the unearthly hand. Her sword came up in a smooth, practiced arc, the edge catching the forge's glare."Back." The warning wasn't directed at the creature alone. "No one moves."Across the forge, the faceless smith remained motionless, watching the hand through the gloom. His blank featureless face revealed nothing."The Forge remembers," he said at last, his voice raspy as grinding stone. The pale hand tightened around the silver fragments. The shards quivered, suspended in the air, caught between two op

  • BONE CROWN    Chapter 76: The Smith Without a Face

Lyra's name lingered through the forge long after the voice faded. No one moved.White fire rolled beneath the floor in slow rivers, throwing restless light across towering anvils and chains thicker than ancient trees. Massive hammers continued their relentless work, each strike sending a deep vibration through the stone under their boots. The rhythm no longer sounded like metal against metal. It pulsed through Lyra's chest until she couldn't tell whether the mountain was keeping time with her heartbeat or the other way around.Astrid tightened her grip on her sword, her gaze sweeping the cavern."Who spoke?"The forge answered with another measured strike. At the center of the hall, the half of the Bone Crown resting upon the anvil brightened. Almost instantly, the fragments tucked inside Lyra's pouch responded. The leather shifted against her hip as if something inside wanted to break free. The Hollow Queen's voice brushed quietly through her thoughts.Go.Lyra kept her eyes on the

  • BONE CROWN    Chapter 75: The Descent

The first step swallowed the light behind them. The change was so abrupt it stole Lyra's breath. One moment, she could still see the shattered chamber where Cassian stood trapped beyond the Forge's unseen barrier. The next, darkness folded over the entrance like deep water closing above a sinking stone. The world behind them disappeared.Only the pale glow flowing along the carved steps remained. The company descended in silence. Boots struck ancient stone in a slow, steady rhythm that faded into the mountain's vastness. Warm air drifted upward from the depths, carrying the scents of heated metal, mineral-rich water, and old smoke baked into the rock. None of it should have felt familiar, yet something about the place stirred a memory Lyra couldn't name. The fragments of the Bone Crown rested against her hip, no longer burning with restless urgency. Instead, they radiated a gentle warmth that eased the tightness in her chest.Inside her mind, the Hollow Queen's voice surfaced. We're c

  • BONE CROWN    Chapter 74: The First Anvil

No one spoke after the Warden fell.Dust drifted through the chamber, settling over the shattered remains of the ancient guardian until its silver glow faded into cold stone. Only the fractured runes around the platform still burned, casting weak ribbons of blue light across the floor. The mountain seemed to be holding its breath. The Keeper stood where he had landed, head bowed toward the broken statue. Even in silence, his presence filled the chamber. No one dared disturb him.Astrid broke the spell first. She crossed the cracked platform, retrieved her sword, and stepped back into formation. Around her, the soldiers recovered dropped shields and scattered weapons with cautious movements, never taking their eyes off the towering figure. None of them had forgotten how easily he had stripped steel from their hands. At last, the Keeper lifted his head."You fear me."There was no mockery in his voice. He stated it as simply as someone remarking on the weather.Lucien slid one of his kn

The chamber held its breath.Stone groaned under the creature's weight as it pulled itself higher, thick fingers gouging deep grooves into the fractured platform. Chunks of rock sheared off beneath its grip, tumbling into the dark abyss below, yet the towering figure mounted the ledge without hurry. It moved with the terrifying calmness of something that knew no one could stop it.Astrid never lowered her sword. "Shields!"The front rank locked together on instinct, the metallic clang of overlapping rims ringing through the vault. They formed a wall of steel between the rising giant and the company. Kaelen stepped in beside Astrid, his blade catching the stuttering silver light of the dying runes. On the opposite flank, Lucien twirled a single throwing knife before settling into a crouch. No one dared to breathe. The creature's head finally cleared the ledge. It wasn't a beast. It looked human—a giant, broad-shouldered man carved from weathered granite.Countless spiderweb cr
