“Thank you.”

Thank you.

Like I’d done him a favor.

Like this was a choice.

“Have you eaten?”

The question landed wrong.

Absurd.

As if we were normal.

As if concern meant anything this late, this hollow.

“Not yet.”

yea, too long..it's unbearable. Also, becoming slightly unreal. doesn't she has a prenup, she graduated from oxford but didn't work. she doesn't have any money at all, like no jewellery to sell to pay for parents mortgage?the background and the story start not adding up. too long, too morose

I hope he feels the aloofness from her. the warmth she gives everyone else but him. I hope he feels her absence despite living with her because she's decided that loving him has brought her nothing but pain and manipulation

  • Beneath His Cold Vows   Chapter 449

The engines went quiet at six. The hull met the pier. The crew moved above us. River light came through the porthole, grey and silver, crossing the ceiling in slow panels. She was on her side facing me. Her hair across the pillow. Her mouth softly parted in the way that belonged only to sleep. I

  • Beneath His Cold Vows   Chapter 448

Edward’s POV The hull rose and settled with the slow pull of the river. I lay in the dark with my jacket on the floor and my shoes beside it and listened to the boat. The timber. The joins. The engine below running its low faithful count. The porthole showed clouds. The moon behind it traced the

  • Beneath His Cold Vows   Chapter 447

"I fell off a bicycle when I was seven," I said. "Broke my arm. The left one." "You're afraid of the dark," he said. "You sleep with the curtain open so the street light comes in. You never told me directly but I worked it out in the third month." I set down my wine. "You remember that." "I remem

  • Beneath His Cold Vows   Chapter 446

Alicia's POV The dress arrived at four. I found the box on Elena's table. Black paper, no ribbon, his handwriting stark on the card: The water. Inside, folded in tissue, was the black silk from the wardrobe at the estate. The one I had left hanging there. I showered. I pinned my hair up. At seve

  • Beneath His Cold Vows   Chapter 445

Edward's POV The grey light filled the room. Alicia's leg lay across mine, heavy with sleep. Her hair spread on my shoulder, across the pillow. Her palm rested on my chest, rising and falling with my breath. The arm beneath her had gone numb hours ago. I flexed my fingers until the pins and needl

  • Beneath His Cold Vows   Chapter 444

Alicia's POV He was on the floor. I looked at him until the silence found its shape. He looked back. The full version of him. Just Edward on the floor, his eyes on mine, waiting without arranging what he was waiting for. "We never chose each other," he said. "Let me choose you." "Then start,"

  • Beneath His Cold Vows   Chapter 308

Alicia's POV The engine settled into a rhythm I hadn't realized I’d been missing. For days now, every drive had been a frantic sprint toward the next crisis. This morning, there was only the envelope on the passenger seat, its corner tucked against the scuff on the leather I’d made last month. The

  • Beneath His Cold Vows   Chapter 303

Edward's POV The panelling on the far wall ran in clean vertical lines from floor to ceiling. I had counted them twice already. The monitor registered everything in intervals. My shoulder was immobilized. My ribs announced themselves every time I breathed too deeply, which I had stopped doing some

  • Beneath His Cold Vows   Chapter 310

Edward's POV The click of the door latch was the only warning. "You're going to rip it." Her voice. Low. No pity in it. I turned. She was there. Bag dropping from her shoulder, her hair a dark frame around a face I'd seen in my head for a week. She'd seen enough: the defeated angle of my should

  • Beneath His Cold Vows   Chapter 304

She was inside. Neither of us moved. The air in the room felt thick and waiting. I was still staring at her. Exhaustion clung to her, pressing into the lines around her eyes, the tension in her shoulders, the way her jaw tightened slightly. She glanced at the monitor, then at the IV in my left a
