The weight of unspoken fears pressed down on Lila as she dressed the next morning in Eli's apartment. Last night's revelations about Seattle had brought them closer in some ways—raw honesty mixed with desperate lovemaking—but the anonymous messages and Reyes' veiled threat created cracks that love alone might not seal.

Eli emerged from the bathroom, towel slung low on his hips, water droplets tracing the lines of his chest. He caught her staring and smiled, that slow, devastating curve of his lips that always made her stomach flip.

"Come here," he said softly.

She went. He pulled her against his damp body and kissed her like he was trying to erase every doubt. His hands slid under her blouse, palms warm against her skin. Within minutes they were back on the bed, clothes half-off in their haste.

Eli took his time this morning, as if savoring her. He kissed every inch of her—down her neck, across her collarbones, lingering on her breasts until she was arching and whimpering. When he finally moved lower, spreading her thighs and settling between them, his tongue was reverent. He licked and sucked with patient skill, two fingers stroking inside her until she came with a shuddering moan, fingers twisted in his hair.

Then he flipped her onto her stomach, pulled her hips up, and entered her from behind in one smooth thrust. The angle was devastatingly deep. He set a steady rhythm, one hand reaching around to circle her clit while the other gripped her shoulder for leverage.

"Feel me," he growled against her ear. "This is real. We're real."

Lila pushed back against him, meeting every powerful stroke until they both tumbled over the edge together, his release hot inside her.

They lay tangled afterward, breathing hard. Eli pressed a kiss to her temple. "I'm meeting Reyes today. Paying what's left. Ending this chapter."

"Be careful," she whispered, tracing the scar on his ribs. "I need you whole."

The day stretched uneasily. At work, Lila powered through edits, but her mind wandered constantly to Eli. Jenna noticed during their afternoon coffee break.

"You look like a woman who's getting incredible dick but also carrying the weight of the world," Jenna said bluntly. "Spill."

Lila gave her the latest—Reyes, the full Seattle story, the texts. Jenna whistled low.

"Sounds like someone's invested in ruining your happiness. Ex? Jealous coworker? Your mom?"

"I don't know anymore." Lila rubbed her temples. "I love him, Jen. The way he touches me, the way he looks at me… it's everything. But the secrets keep piling up."

"Love doesn't mean blind trust," Jenna said gently. "Talk more. Fuck more. And watch your back."

Eli texted her late afternoon: Meeting done. Paid in full. Reyes won't bother us again. Come to the bar tonight? Want to show you off.

The invitation felt like a small victory. Lila dressed carefully—a deep red wrap dress that hugged her curves and tied at the waist, easy to remove. When she walked into The Anchor, Eli's eyes darkened with immediate heat. He came around the bar, pulled her into a corner, and kissed her deeply, not caring who saw.

"You look sinful," he murmured against her lips. "Been hard since I saw you in my bed this morning."

The bar was lively with weekend energy. Live music played, and for a few precious hours, they felt normal. Eli introduced her openly to regulars as "my girl." Mace clapped him on the back with a knowing grin. Sofia stopped by briefly, beaming at the sight of them together.

But the bubble burst near closing time.

A woman walked in—tall, with sharp features and tired eyes. She scanned the room and zeroed in on Eli. Lila felt him stiffen beside her.

"Maria," he said quietly.

The woman from Seattle. She approached the bar, glancing at Lila with guarded curiosity. "I heard you were back in town. Needed to see you myself."

Eli's hand found Lila's under the bar, squeezing. "This is Lila. My girlfriend."

Maria nodded. "I came to thank you properly. What you did… it was messy, but you saved me that night. I lost the baby, but I got out. I'm okay now. I shouldn't have blamed you."

The confession lifted a visible weight from Eli's shoulders. They spoke quietly for a few minutes. Maria left with a soft "Take care of each other," and the night felt lighter.

Later, upstairs in Eli's apartment, the relief translated into passion. Eli undressed Lila slowly, worshipping her body with hands and mouth. He laid her on the bed and made love to her face-to-face, deep and slow, eyes never leaving hers.

"I'm done running from my past," he whispered as he moved inside her. "You're my future."

Lila came apart beneath him, tears mixing with pleasure. They climaxed together, holding each other through the waves.

But as they lay in the afterglow, Eli's phone buzzed. He checked it and frowned.

"Unknown number. Says: 'Payment accepted, but old sins don't die easy. Ask Lila's mother what she paid to make you leave nine years ago.'"

Lila sat up, heart pounding. "My mother?"

Eli looked as shocked as she felt. "What the hell?"

The pieces were shifting again. Rosa's strong opposition, her detailed knowledge of Eli's past, the timing of his departure years ago. Had her mother interfered? Paid someone? Forced distance between them?

Lila dressed quickly, mind racing. "I need to talk to her. Tomorrow."

Eli pulled her back for one more kiss, fierce and protective. "We do this together. No more secrets between us."

But as Lila left his apartment into the cool night air, another text arrived on her phone.

Unknown: Your mother did what she thought was best. Eli took the money and left. Ask him why he never told you he was paid to stay away.

The ground felt like it was crumbling beneath her feet. The love story she thought they were writing suddenly had chapters she hadn't authored—and pages that might destroy everything.

The formal conversation with Darren Holt’s lawyer was scheduled for eleven the next morning.Eli learned of the time from the detective in a short, careful call. No guarantees had been made. No immunity had been promised. What had been offered was a structured discussion about what cooperation might look like if Holt decided the cost of remaining inside Hale’s structure exceeded the cost of stepping out of it. That distinction mattered. Men under pressure often tested the door before they walked through it.Lila listened to the update at the kitchen table, hands wrapped around a cooling mug of coffee. The manuscript folder sat closed beside her laptop. The reputational threats of the previous days had not vanished. They had simply been joined by a second, sharper possibility: that the other side’s internal fractures might finally produce usable movement.“If he gives them anything real,” she said, “Hale loses altitude.”“Yes,” Eli answered. “And if Hale senses the loss coming, he may

The anonymous email and the voicemail to the imprint forced a sharper kind of planning.By morning Lila had printed both messages and placed them in the growing folder of materials she now carried to every conversation with Harlan. The threat against the manuscript was no longer theoretical. It had touched the professional channel. That fact required a response that was more than endurance.Eli watched her organize the papers at the kitchen table and said, “We treat this like the camera and the window. We don’t freeze the thing they’re aiming at. We harden it and keep it moving.”“I’m not freezing the book,” Lila said. “But I need the people around the book to understand the shape of what they’re seeing.”They agreed on a divided approach for the day: Lila would handle a careful, controlled conversation with her editor; Eli would push the investigative and security side with Harlan and the detective. The work of their ordinary lives—bar, manuscript, family—would continue inside that s

The message about fragile reputations landed harder than the broken window.By morning Lila had read it enough times that the words had stopped feeling like a threat and started feeling like a map of Hale’s new strategy. He had watched long enough to understand that spray paint and forced doors were blunt instruments. The manuscript—her work, her possible future—was a cleaner pressure point. It could be touched without another police report about property damage. It could be poisoned with suggestion, rumor, or carefully placed noise.Eli found her at the kitchen table before sunrise, laptop open, the editorial letter and the threat message in side-by-side windows.“You’re not pulling the book back,” he said. It was not a question.“No.”“Good.” He set coffee beside her. “Then we treat this like every other escalation. We document it. We harden the target. And we keep moving the thing they’re trying to freeze.”The simplicity of the framing helped. Fear did not vanish. It was given a j

The tentative identification of the second alley figure changed the temperature of the investigation.By mid-morning the detective had a name to work with: a man named Darren Holt, thirty-nine, with a short record of property offenses and prior occasional association with Kerwin. It was not enough for an arrest on the break-in alone. It was enough to bring him in for questioning and to place his image beside the camera stills. When Eli relayed the update to Lila in the apartment kitchen, she felt a precise, unfamiliar sensation—something closer to traction than hope.“They’re getting names,” she said.“Yes,” Eli answered. “And names create pressure in both directions.”They carried that fact into the day like a small, hard weight. The bar opened under the same boarded window and reinforced rear door. The plywood had collected a few more notes from regulars overnight. Mace left them in place and wrote a new line on the back-hallway chalkboard:They tried the door. Now we have a name. S

The failed break-in changed the quality of the following day.By mid-morning the detective had confirmed that the camera footage was clear enough for investigative use. Clothing details, approximate builds, and the presence of a forced-entry tool had been logged. It was not yet an identification. It was the first time Hale’s side had reached for a physical escalation and left usable evidence behind. Harlan called the development “material.” He began preparing an updated filing that framed the entire pattern—from the early envelopes through the surveillance videos, the vandalism, Kerwin’s assault, and now an attempted nighttime break-in—as a continuous campaign of harassment with escalating risk.Eli received the update while standing in the alley where the attempt had happened. In daylight the scuff marks near the door looked smaller. The floodlight and the wider camera angle looked larger. He stayed there for a moment longer than necessary, absorbing the fact that the previous night

The second day of the forty-eight-hour window opened with a thin, gray coastal light and the sense that something had to break.Eli was awake before dawn. Lila found him at the kitchen table with the camera feeds open on his laptop and a half-finished cup of coffee gone cold beside him. He looked up when she entered, and the expression on his face was controlled but stripped of any pretense that this was still abstract.“No new messages,” he said. “No movement on the feeds. Sofia checked in twenty minutes ago. They’re fine.”“For now,” Lila said.“For now.”They moved through the early morning with deliberate practicality. Lila forced herself to protect a short revision block; the manuscript had become one of the few places where the future still felt larger than Hale’s clock. Eli handled the bar’s opening with Mace, the boarded window still in place, the plywood continuing to collect small notes of support from regulars. Presence remained their most reliable soft defense. At 10:40 a.
