LOGINEmma’s pov.
The word sounded in my head like a curse I couldn’t escape.
“Mate”, No. no. no. no.
I ran out of the building like I was being chased by death itself.
My bare feet barely registered the cold marble floors of silver fang mansion as I pushed through corridors filled with golden chandeliers and judgemental stares. The voices behind me blurred into noise, confused gasps, whispered names, someone calling after me- but I didn’t stop, not until I was outside.
The cold air hit my face like a slap, snapping something fragile inside me, but I still didn’t slow down, I kept running past guards, past gates, past the manicured gardens of a world I didn’t belong to.
My lungs burned all this time, and my heart was worse. Because behind me, inside that mansion, was him.
Hayes.
The stranger from last night.
The man whom I had kissed in drunken desperation, clung to like he was the only thing keeping me alive. The man I had given myself to in a moment I could barely even remember clearly now.
And now…… My stepbrother. My mate.
My world tilted again just by thinking about it. I finally stopped when I reached a quiet stretch near the silver fang forest line. My legs gave out and i collapsed against a tree, gasping for air as everything caught up with me at once.
“No”…….
I whispered to myself. “This can’t be real”. My hands trembled as i pressed them against my chest, trying to calm the violent pounding of my heart.
A mate bond wasn’t supposed to feel like this. Confusion, panic, shame filled my entire soul. It was supposed to feel
right, but nothing about this felt right. Not after what i had just discovered. Not after everything. A branch snapped somewhere behind me. I froze instantly. My body reacted before my mind did— heart racing, senses sharpening in a way I didn’t understand. A strange heat curled low in my stomach, pulling me backwards towards something i didnt want to face.
“Emma”. His voice.
Low. Controlled and dangerous. I turned slowly.
Hayes stood a few feet away, his expression unreadable, his dark hair was slightly disheveled, like he had rushed after me without thinking.
His eyes— those sharp, storm coloured eyes were fixed on me like i was the only thing in the world that mattered. I hated that my body reacted to that look. I hated the warmth spreading through me even when my mind screamed at me to run again.
“Don’t”,
I said immediately, stepping back.
“Don’t come closer”. He stopped, but his jaw tightened. “You ran out”, he said.
“I had to”.
“You didn’t even listen”.
“Listen to what?” My voice cracked. “That I slept with my stepbrother? That I’m apparently bounded to you? That my life just turned into some twisted nightmares i didnt ask for?” His eyes darkened slightly at that.
“You think i asked for this?”
That made me pause. For a second, i saw the frustration in his face. Not arrogance, not cruelty. It was confusion. Something deeper. But i shook it off. “No”, i said bitterly, “but you are handling it a lot better than i am”.
“That’s not true”.
I laughed once, sharp and humorless. Really? Because from where I’m standing you look like you’re about to reject me any second.
There was silence at this moment.
The silence hurt more than I expected. Because it confirmed what I really feared. He didn’t want this either.
The mate bond pulsed again between us— stronger this time, like it was irritated by the distance. My knees nearly buckled
from the sensation, and i hated how my body betrayed me. Hayes noticed.
His gaze flickered downward for a moment, then back to my face. “You feel it too”, he said quietly. I swallowed hard. I don’t want it.”
There was a pause.
Neither of us moved. The forest around us felt too still, like even nature was waiting for his response. Finally, he exhaled slowly. “I didn’t know you were the girl from last night,” he said. “Not until the ceremony.” My chest tightened.
“Would it have mattered?” I asked.
This time, he didn’t answer immediately. There was silence again…..
It said everything. My throat burned.
“I was your stepbrother before I was your mate,” he said softly, “that should have mattered more than anything else” “Then why are you here?”
“Because I can’t ignore the bond.”
My breath caught. “That’s not an answer”, “It’s the only one I have right now.”
We stood there, locked in tension that wasn’t just emotional
anymore. Something between us kept pulling, pushing, tightening like invisible chains. And i hated how my body leaned toward him even when my mind resisted. “You think I’m like my mother”
“I thought a lot of things before last night,” he admitted. That surprised me. I frowned. “And now?”
His gaze held mine. “Now i don’t know what you are.” The honesty in that answer cracked something in my chest. Because I didn’t know what i was anymore either.
A wolfless omega.
A betrayed girlfriend.
A stepdaughter to an alpha family.
And now…. A mate to a man I shouldn’t even look at twice. Finally, I whispered almost to myself. “What do we do now?” Hayes didn’t answer immediately. But when he did, his voice was steady.
“We figure it out”.
I let out a bitter breath. “That’s not a plan.” It all i can give you right now. His uncertainty scared me more than anything else. Because if he didn’t know what to do… neither of us did. And whatever this bond was, it was only going to get stronger.
Emma’s pov.“She's not stuck.”The words landed like a bomb.Silence followed after.Every person in the room turned toward Hayes, including me. My heart was beating so hard but Hayes didn't seem to notice. Or maybe he did and didn’t care. His eyes were just fixed on Ronan. His look was the kind that made people think twice before speaking. Unfortunately, Ronan wasn't thinking twice.“What exactly is that supposed to mean?” he asked. The tension immediately thickened. The Alpha sighed. And I...I wanted to disappear.Hayes took a step forward. And somehow it felt like the entire room shifted.“It means exactly what it sounds like.”Ronan frowned.“No, You don't get to decide that.”The mate bond pulsed hard.A strange heat swept through my chest and i looked away, because it was getting out of control.“Actually… I do” Hayes said calmly.Ronan laughed.“You barely even know her.” My whole body went cold immediately, Because that part was true.We barely knew each other and the bond d
Emma's Pov“You made a bet... on my mate?”The room went deathly silent as hayes stood motionless, with his eyes fixed on Ronan. Ronan looked like all the blood had drained from his face. The broken armrest of the chair lay on the floor between them.No one moved nor spoke. Then Ronan cut the silence suddenly—“It wasn't like that.”Hayes didn't blink.“Then what was it like?”Ronan swallowed.“I... I was drunk.”I stared at him.Drunk? That was his excuse?“You told me about the bet while smoking a cigarette in the garage,” I said quietly. “You looked perfectly sober.”Ronan turned to looked at me.“Emma, let me explain.”I laughed.“You want to explain now?”“Please.” His face tightened.I suddenly realized something. He was pleading because he was afraid not because he was guilty. And somehow, that hurt even more.“You told me you loved me,” I said.“You said I was the only girl you could see yourself with.”I could hear my own heartbeat at this point.“You even talked about findin
Emma’s pov.I stared at Jenna, and then blinked once. “What?” I askedJenna looked almost amused.“You heard me.”“No...” I said slowly. “No, that's impossible.”Her smile widened.“Is it?”I looked at Hayes. He was staring at Jenna now, his expression unreadable. Then I looked at the Alpha. He suddenly looked concerned. My heart began beating faster.“What does she mean?” I asked. Nobody answered.“Can someone please tell me what she means?”The Alpha sighed. Jenna folded her arms.“You're feeling his emotions, aren't you?” I was speechless for a second. The room suddenly seemed too quiet again.Because...I was.I had felt his anger, his protectiveness and comfort. These were my thoughts. I slowly looked at Hayes. He was also looking at me. He didn’t say anything either.Jenna laughed softly.“Oh my Goddess. You really don't know.”“Jenna,” the Alpha warned. But she ignored him.“You're feeling him, Emma. That's why you reacted when he got angry.”I swallowed hard.“That's... normal
Emma’s POVHayes wolf was close to the surface. The mate bond pulsed violently, almost painfully, and for the first time, I felt it clearly. I looked at Hayes. His expression remained terrifyingly calm, but his eyes... They were glowing.“Oh my Goddess,” Jenna whispered. The Alpha immediately stood.“Hayes.” He didn’t respond.Ronan, on the other hand, seemed completely oblivious to the danger. Or maybe he wasn't. Because a strange smile spread across his face.“So it's true,” he said, looking between us. “You two are close.”“We are not!” I blurted.Everyone turned to look at me. I just wanted to disappear.Hayes slowly turned his head toward me. I immediately looked away. But that was a wrong move because the bond reacted.Again.The Alpha frowned.“What exactly is going on?”Nobody answered nor move. Then Ronan laughed softly.“This is unbelievable.”“Ronan,” I warned. But he ignored me. “Emma really does have terrible luck.” The words hit me like a slap.Hayes' jaw tightened, and
Emma’s povEvery muscle in my body locked as the front doors slammed shut behind him.Ronan.He stood at the entrance of the sitting room, his chest rising and falling rapidly. His usually perfect hair was disheveled, and his eyes searched the room wildly until they landed on me.“"Emma!”Silence descended in the room. How did he know I was here? Why was he here? I pondered. The mate bond suddenly pulsed sharply beside me but ididn't look at Hayes this time.Because all I could think about was the humiliation and the betrayal i faced. The look on his face when he said…. Did you really think I'd be interested in someone like you?I swallowed hard. The room suddenly felt too small.“Ronan?” Jenna called.I blinked. She knew him?Apparently, everyone did cuz he was popular at Lunaris Academy.Ronan looked at Jenna briefly before his gaze snapped back to me. Then he did something unexpected. He walked toward me in a rush.“Emma, there you are.”I frowned. There I was?As if he had been l
Emma’s pov I didn’t know why it bothered me.But it shouldn’t have.Yet i found myself standing by the window long after Hayes and Jenna disappeared from my sight. This was ridiculous, I crossed my arms while thinking about Jenna’s beauty.Everyone liked her.She came from an influential family. And Hayes…He was an Alpha prince. They were a very good match. A nobody like me couldn’t be with him.I turned away from the window and sat on the edge of my bed. A sudden knock came from the door. Before i could answer, one of the maids entered carrying a large box.“The Luna asked me to bring this to you”. I frowned. She placed the box on the bed and bowed slightly before leaving. I looked at the box suspiciously before opening it. It was the dress she spoke about earlier, it was soft- creamed- colored silk with tiny silver details sewn into fabric.I touched it carefully. Then immediately withdrew my hand. This wasn’t my kind of dress. I preferred simple things. But unfortunately, my
Emma’s pov.At night, I couldn’t sleep. Every time i closed my eyes, i saw him. Hayes. Not the stranger from the hotel room i barely remembered…. But the man standing in front of me at the forest, looking at me like i was both a problem and something he couldn’t walk away from.A mate.A stepbrothe
Emma's POV I opened my eyes, and to my shock, I realized I wasn’t in my room. The stark white walls of the unfamiliar room confirmed it. At first, I wanted to dismiss it. It didn’t matter whether the walls were white or dark, I felt groggy and hungover from everything I had drunk the night before.
Emma's POV I downed the fifth glass of alcohol I had been served at the bar, the bartender pouring according to my request, the number of glasses dictated by the money I had paid. There was still some left in the glass, but I was already too drunk to continue.“Are you alright, young lady?” the ba
Emma's POV I hesitated before pushing the door open, my heart still in my hands, unable to believe the sounds I had heard from inside. At first, they had been muffled, but standing there long enough made them clear and impossible to ignore.Breathless moans. The heavy grunts of a man. My mind scra
