Chapter 4: Olivia

last update publish date: 2026-04-09 17:20:27

“We’re here,” Dillon says brightly. He pushes open my dorm room door, and if I weren’t so tense, I might have admired my new space.

There’s a small bed pushed to the wall, a sturdy-looking desk beside it, and a large window overlooking the whole setup.

It’s nothing special, but I'm just grateful they didn’t make me sleep in a dustbin or something.

Dillon sets my box down, “You’re lucky you get to move in during the weekend. You have Saturday and Sunday to rest before it all begins.”

Lucky isn’t the word I'd use to describe my situation, but I try to smile at him regardless, “Thank you, Dillon.”

“If you need me, you know where to find me, or Hunter.”

I swallow. The last thing I want to think about is Hunter.

Looking back, I should have kept my struggles to myself. What if he tells the whole school the council is trying to kill me? That’ll definitely make me a target.

I nod, and Dillon squeezes my shoulder, “Be safe, Olivia.”

‘I’ll try.” Not like it's my choice.

He leaves. But instead of making my bed or checking the en-suit bathroom, I pull the scrunched letter out of my pocket.

There her name is again: Quinn Willow.

My heart hammers. The only thing I know about my parents is that they were mauled to death in the middle of the war.

My father died quickly, but my mother managed to escape with me before she was killed as well.

This is all I have of her.

I flip it over, too scared to see what it says. Once I read it, that’s the end.

“Be brave Olivia,” I whisper to myself.

I breathe out and finally flip the crumpled paper open.

I read the four words on the sheet, growing more and more confused with each re-read:

“Until we meet again.”

There’s something I think is a signature at the bottom: a circle crossed with two lightning bolts, but it could just be more senseless scribbling.

My cheeks heat. Surely this is some kind of joke the council is playing on me? To taunt me for my losses?

I crumple up the paper in embarrassment. How could I be so stupid to hope that my mum wrote to me?

“Fuck this” I say angrily, throwing the paper hard in the direction of the door.

A boy’s toned hand reaches out and catches it.

“I have a better idea,” he says, an amused look on his face, “You could fuck me instead.”

I stagger back, my heart pounding as he leans against my door frame.

Goddess, he’s beautiful. Almost too beautiful; with a head of curly blonde hair, mesmerising green eyes, and a sharp face angled at me.

He almost looks Hunter-level perfect, if not for his crooked tie and blazerless uniform.

And the fact he’s currently breaking into my room.

“What…How…?”

“Maybe lock your door next time?” He drawls, “You don’t want hot men walking in and seducing you.”

“Who are you?” I finally manage to bite out.

He gives me a lazy smile, “Ryker Saint. Claire.”

Something about the way he’s looking at me isn't exactly saint-like. I’m suddenly aware of how bare my legs look in this short school skirt.

When I finally find my voice, I mutter, “You can’t be here.”

“Yet, here I am.” He pushes off the doorframe, my letter still in his hand, and slowly moves toward me. Alarm bells go off in my head.

Ryker drags his gaze down my body, “Hunter was right, you are hot.”

“You know him?” I ask, tingling at the fact that Hunter called me hot.

“Oh darling, he’s my packmate.”

My stomach flips. Of course they’re in the same pack. Like my life isn’t complicated enough.

Before I can respond, Ryker starts unravelling the letter.

I gasp. What right does he have to my personal property? As he squints at the paper, I lunge at him.

I smash into his hard chest as he leans away from me, reading out loud, “Until we meet again. Interesting.”

I stretch to reach it, but I don’t even get to Ryker’s neck, “Give. That. Back.”

“As you wish.” He turns suddenly, backing me up. I gasp as my back hits a wall and Ryker leans over me, green eyes glimmering.

He sniffs near my ear, and I swear he purrs.

I wonder what my scent is like?

Hunter’s was all fresh fruits, but Ryker’s is dark, smoky, and overwhelming me.

When he crumples the letter back into my hand, our fingers brush, and I blurt out the first thing I think of, “If you kiss me I will kill you.”

“Only if you do it choking me.”

I gag, “Leave. I don't like you.”

He smirks wickedly, “Maybe not. But you want to know what this letter means, don’t you? And the signature at the bottom?”

My eyes widen, “You know something? Tell me!”

He’s quiet for a moment, and I swear he’s still inhaling my scent.

“I have a party tomorrow.” he finally says, “my other pack mate knows all about this stuff. His name’s Talon. Come by my house with your invite and you guys can talk.” he winks, “and maybe we could discuss you choking me again.”

I scrunch my nose, pulling away from Ryker. Who the hell does this guy think he is?

But if this letter means something, if there's even the slightest chance that my mum is sending me a deeper message, maybe I could discover some way to escape my fate without having to graduate or die.

Maybe I'm special.

“I can't go to a werewolf party,” I say, trying to talk myself out of this outrageous idea, “Everyone will try to kill me.”

An odd emotion flashes through his eyes, and for a second, his irises shift into dark slits.

Shifter eyes.

“Darling,” he whispers, “I think you underestimate the power of me and my pack. If we tell people to fuck off, they will.”

I remember how Hunter cleared the halls earlier, and I don't doubt him.

“It's decided then,” Ryker says with finality. He heads for the door, stating, “Come to the Crestridge house at 10pm, and make sure you wear a skirt as short as this one.”

Once again, my cheeks redden, and I curse the heat pooling at my core.

“I don't even have an invite!” I call after him.

“Yes, you do,” he answers smoothly, closing the door behind him.

I shake my head. I do not need a Ryker in my life. Ever.

I move to unfold my letter again, but instead of the letter, I realise Ryker has stuffed a completely different paper in my hand.

It's the invite.

  • Bite   Chapter 120: Hunter

Gravel crunches beneath our feet as we move stealthily through the messy Penbrook terrain. I step on something that squelches and gag. I didn’t think saving my girl would be this nasty. “How much further do we have to go?” Liana asks, her voice a whisper. But it doesn’t matter, because it still echoes off the dark-stained buildings. I tense. “Not much further,” Axel says, sounding as sure as an Alpha should. As sure as I never will. The distance between us may only be a few steps, but I feel like there’s an entire universe separating Axel and I. The fight still feels fresh. I look at him, standing in front of our mismatched bunch. He’s bent slightly, his head crooked to search for threats. Being Alpha comes naturally to him, in a way it may never do so to me. Something snaps in the distance, and I stand at attention, ready to get out my knife. I swivel my head in the foggy direction of the noise, squinting into the darkness with a pounding heart. “Everyone stay quiet,” A

He doesn’t deny it. All this time I thought Penwood was an open grave, or a meeting place for the dead, but it’s never been that. It’s where all my people are. I stick the knife out, urging him not to take one more fucking step closer. Nester regards it with curious eyes, “You would still kill me, after knowing I saved our people?” “My people,” I snap. “And you didn’t save anyone. You turned them into mindless animals in your bitterness. They serve you blindly.” “That may be true, Olivia. But they serve me well.” I want to scream and never stop. How could he do this to humans? The bed feels too intimate to back myself up against, yet there is nowhere else for me to go. Nester stays standing at the edge; hands folded behind his back, neck a little crooked as he waits for my next words. “So what caused you to kill my mother then?” I snarl. “She came to you, didn’t she? After you started enslaving humans?” His face goes grave again, and violent heat floods me. What right does

  • Bite   Chapter 119: Olivia

I should kill him now. I have the chance, so I should take it. But my fingers are trapped around the picture frame. No matter how hard I try to release it, my hands don’t comply. “What is this?” I ask again, unable to hide the warble in my voice. Nester edges closer, the smell of death on him suddenly unbearable. “Maybe you should sit down-” I jerk away from him, toppling onto the bed. “Don’t tell me what to do.” Nester shakes his head. “That is the last thing I will ever do. You are the goddess herself to the people of Penbrook. If anything, you will soon tell them what to do.” His hand clasps my shoulder, “but first you have to listen to me.” The air thins. I struggle to gulp in the right amount of breaths to keep me standing and listening to this asshole. Me? A Goddess? How? And why to them? He gently pries the frame out of my shaky hands, his gaze hazy as he stares at the photo with a thin, reminiscing smile. “We were all so close then,” he starts wistfully, “all so young

  • Bite   chapter 118: Ryker

It’s like I can feel the mark tattooed into my skin. Something that I haven't noticed in however long suddenly feels hot and heavy on my body. I run my hand over it painfully, as if doing that enough times will eventually rub it off my skin. Maybe by the time the door opens I'll look down at my ankle and see there was nothing there after all. “Ryker,” Hunter says soothingly, “Calm down.” How can I calm down? I'm in the dark. I'm chained to my brothers, and apparently I've been marked by Nester. “No no no no no.” I panic, rubbing harder, faster, trying to get this evil thing off my skin.Fingers snap around my moving hand, and from the slenderness of their touch, I know it's Talon. “Rye, it's okay,” he says gently, but he must think I'm stupid not to hear the tension in his voice. “It's okay for you.” I don't keep the panic out of my tone. “You're not the one with Nester Rist’s mark on your skin.” “Rubbing it isn't going to change anything,” he tries to keep his voice steady. F

  • Bite   Chapter 117: Olivia

The sack over my head comes off, and I stare up at Nester’s hulking frame.Every blood cell in my body freezes. “Miss Blackwood,” he says, “it’s such an honour to have you here.” He’s here. He’s actually in front of me. My brain falters as it tries to think of words to say, but Axel’s low growl beats me to it. Nester doesn't even acknowledge him. “You’ll have to forgive my… methods of getting you here.” Nester raises the sack. “I didn’t know how else to have a formal meeting with you. I’d insisted Everest try to convince you to come, but I guess that was an error on my end. He isn’t always… amicable.” A million responses come to mind, but I can’t get any of them past my lips. This is the man who murdered my mother. This is the reason all the humans other than me are dead. This is my greatest enemy. My biggest threat. And he’s so… polite? “Um,” I start, finally managing to put words together. “Hello.” Nester smiles at me, a full set of white teeth gleaming in the darkness.

  • Bite   Chapter 116: Ryker

As Alex drives down the barren road, one thought loops in my mind: I can’t get warm. It doesn’t matter how many times she turns off the air conditioner, or how thick my jacket is, I’ve been shivering for hours. No, scratch that. I’ve been shivering for days. Since John attacked me. I try hard not to think about that fact, because if those two are connected, then it’s clear that something is very wrong, too wrong for me to handle. “Here,” Alex announces, parking the car by that damn Penwood barrier. The intimidating rock juts out of the stones, practically warning us against entry. For a second, none of us moves. I look to my pack brothers and Liana, each sporting gleaming handcuffs that match mine. They bite. Hard. Digging into my skin in a way that’s sure to leave a mark. Liana lets out a shaky breath. “No turning back now, is there?” “Nope,” the boys and I chorus. Even if there were, I’m not leaving here without Axel and my girl. “Well,” Liana starts, puffing out her ches
