The tunnel swallowed every trace of light.

Ariana stopped running.

The only sound she could hear was her own breathing, uneven and desperate after fleeing through the narrow passage. Behind her, the collapse had sealed the entrance completely.

Kael was gone.

The masked warriors were gone.

She was alone.

Then the crimson eyes blinked.

They floated in the darkness several paces ahead, unmoving and unblinking, watching her every breath.

Ariana's fingers instinctively closed around the silver pendant hanging from her neck.

The metal was warm.

Almost comforting.

"Who is there?" she whispered.

The eyes did not answer.

Instead, a low growl echoed through the tunnel.

It was not the roar of a beast preparing to attack.

It sounded more like a warning.

Slowly, the pendant began to glow.

Soft silver light spilled into the darkness, revealing rough stone walls covered with ancient carvings. The light continued to spread until it reached the source of the glowing eyes.

Ariana froze.

Standing before her was an enormous black wolf.

Its shoulders reached almost to her chest. Thick fur covered its body, and silver markings stretched across its face like streams of moonlight.

The creature studied her with surprising calm.

Then it lowered its head.

It was bowing.

Ariana stared in disbelief.

"You are not going to hurt me?"

The wolf remained still.

After a moment, it turned and began walking deeper into the tunnel.

Every few steps, it looked back as if expecting her to follow.

She hesitated.

Trusting a giant wolf hidden beneath an ancient chapel sounded foolish.

Yet everything that had happened tonight would have seemed impossible only hours earlier.

Taking a deep breath, she followed.

The tunnel widened until they reached a cavern unlike anything Ariana had imagined.

Hundreds of crystal formations hung from the ceiling, filling the space with a gentle blue glow.

In the center stood a circular pool so clear that it reflected every crystal above like a perfect mirror.

The wolf approached the water.

The instant its paw touched the surface, the reflection changed.

The peaceful cavern vanished.

A palace appeared.

Its towers stretched toward a crimson sky while banners bearing the symbol of the flaming wolf fluttered in the wind.

Crowds filled the streets below.

Children laughed.

Merchants traded goods.

Musicians played in the squares.

It was alive.

The image shifted.

Without warning, fire consumed everything.

The banners burned.

The towers collapsed.

Soldiers wearing black armor stormed through the gates.

The streets became rivers of panic and blood.

Ariana watched in horror.

"No."

The wolf looked at her.

Its silver eyes carried unmistakable sorrow.

A woman's voice suddenly echoed through the cavern.

"The kingdom did not fall in a single night."

Ariana spun around.

An elderly woman stepped from behind one of the crystal pillars.

She wore a robe woven from shimmering gray fabric, and a silver staff rested in her hand.

Her long white hair reached almost to her waist.

Unlike everyone else Ariana had met, the old woman did not seem surprised to see her.

She simply smiled.

"I was beginning to wonder when you would arrive."

"Who are you?"

"My name is Elara."

"You know me?"

"I knew your mother."

The words struck Ariana like a physical blow.

"My mother died."

"Yes."

Elara lowered her gaze.

"But before she died, she made me a promise."

"What promise?"

"That if the Blood Heir ever returned, I would help guide her until she could stand on her own."

The black wolf walked to Elara's side and sat obediently.

The old woman rested one hand on its head.

"This is Nyx."

"He led me here."

"He has waited longer than anyone."

Ariana slowly approached the crystal pool again.

The images had changed once more.

Now she saw a woman wearing a crimson crown.

The queen held a newborn child wrapped in silver cloth.

Standing beside her was a young warrior in polished armor.

Even through the shifting water, Ariana recognized him.

Kael.

The queen placed the child into his arms.

Her lips moved silently.

Elara closed her eyes.

"I remember those words."

"What did she say?"

"Protect her until the stars forget the moon."

Ariana's heart ached.

"Did he?"

"He tried."

The cavern trembled.

Dust drifted from the ceiling.

Nyx immediately stood and bared his teeth toward the tunnel entrance.

Elara's expression darkened.

"They found us."

"Who?"

"The Order of Ash."

Before Ariana could react, a sharp whistle echoed through the cavern.

Then another.

And another.

Torches suddenly flared to life in the tunnel beyond.

Dark figures emerged from the shadows.

At their head stood a tall woman dressed entirely in white.

Her silver hair flowed behind her like silk.

She held a black staff crowned with crimson crystal.

Her eyes locked onto Ariana.

For several seconds, neither of them moved.

Then the woman smiled.

"So the stories were true."

She took one slow step forward.

"The last Bloodbound heir still lives."

Nyx growled.

Elara tightened her grip on the silver staff.

Ariana felt the pendant around her neck pulse with heat.

The woman in white raised her own staff.

"I have waited twenty years for this moment."

The crystal pool suddenly exploded into a pillar of silver light.

And from somewhere deep beneath the cavern floor, an ancient voice echoed through the stone.

"The trial has begun."
