“Miss Drea Hart?” He asked, looking at me with an unreadable expression on his face.
The familiar churning I felt in my stomach settled in. Somehow, this man’s presence made me nervous.
“Yes. That’s me.” I said slowly, my eyes staring at his with caution.
He cleared his throat once more, extending his arm out for a handshake.
“It’s nice to meet you, Miss Hart. I am Andrew Smith — but you can call me Mr Smith.” He introduced.
I stared at his outstretched hand like it was a foreign object I wasn’t supposed to touch, thinking about the reasons why the man dressed in a suit — Mr Smith was talking to me.
Ivanka clearing her throat seemed to bring me back to reality as I looked at her, her eyes gesturing towards the man’s outstretched hand and nudging her head towards it. She wanted me to shake it.
I wiped my palms on my jeans and slowly shook him, laughing nervously to break the tension.
“It’s nice to meet you too Mr Smith.” I finally responded, his cold but firm hand releasing mine.
“Shall we go and sit?” Ivanka gestured sweetly, ushering Mr Smith into the living room.
I looked at Philip who refused to meet my eyes. My brows furrowed as I stared at him. What was wrong with him?
I sat down with Ivanka on my left and Philip on my right. Mr Smith was sitting opposite us as he set his bag down on the floor.
“Can I get you something to drink?” Ivanka asked.
“Yes. Just a water please.” He responded calmly. With that, she stood up and made a beeline for the kitchen to retrieve it.
I nudged Philip who was beside me and leaned in close to his ear.
“What is going on? Please just give me a hint - a clue. Anything.” I begged, glancing over at Mr Smith, who was looking at me sternly.
What did I do?
Philip pursed his lips and was about to say something when Ivanka re-entered the living room.
“Your water.” she smiled, dropping a tray of water with a few snacks next to it. Who knew we had snacks in the house?
“Thank you.” He said, picking up the glass and slowly sipping it until it was halfway full. He dropped it on the coaster and cleared his throat. What was wrong with his throat?
“So, Mr Smith, why are you here today?” Ivanka asked, giddy with excitement. It was almost as if she knew why he was here but wanted him to say it.
“I am a lawyer working under Wolfe Systems. I am here because of these documents.” He started, reaching into his bag and pulling out a folder.
What business did I have with a lawyer?
He handed it to me as I stared at it strangely. In some ways, I didn’t want to open them because I felt that whatever was in it was nothing good.
Ivanka watched me closely as I peeled the cover page open and stared at the document.
I narrowed my eyes, trying to see if I could understand what I was holding.
All I saw was my name, my father's name, and another man’s name. It also had both the man's and my father’s signatures. What was this? I knew nothing about the law, so I didn’t fully understand what I was looking at.
“I’m sorry. I don’t really understand the document. What do my dad and I have to do with this man…” I looked at the name of the man on the folder.
“August Wolfe. Who is he?” I asked.
“He is the chairman of Wolfe Technologies,” He replied.
That answer was not enough for the numerous questions I had running through my mind.
“What do I have to do with him?”
“Both Mr Wolfe and yourself…are to be married based on this contract” He said lowly. I’m sorry. What?
Marriage? That’s not possible.
My brows pulled together in confusion, really thinking over his words. What marriage? This has got to be a scam. There’s no way. An arranged marriage? What is this? The 1950’s?
The silence in the room was louder than anything I had ever heard, the air heavy with tension.
“This is a joke, right?” I laughed nervously, looking over at Philip, who refused to look at me.
“Philip?” I mumbled, my hands grasping his forearm and slightly nudging him. I hoped he would tell me that this was a huge prank. I looked at Ivanka to see her smiling ear to ear.
Why was she smiling like she just won the lottery or something?
Wait…was this her finally selling me off to someone?
“I’m afraid it is not.” Mr Smith replied.
There’s no way this is a joke. Absolutely not. This sort of thing just does not happen. And to me? No.
“What do you mean?” I asked, hoping the answer would not be what I thought it was.
“You are to wed Mr Wolfe on the 27th of July” He stated. That was literally in a month. Who gets married within such a short period?
My heart dropped.
This could not be real. My shaky hands reached down and pinched my thigh, hoping it would snap me out of whatever trance or dream I was in.
When I felt the familiar sting in that particular area indicating that this was actually reality, my breathing slowed down.
“What?” I asked, my voice barely a whisper as I turned to Ivanka who had a grin on her face.
“You’re getting married to August Wolfe!” she squealed like a teenager, beaming with excitement.
I froze, slowly peeking at her, and then turned to Philip to see him looking at me with guilt written all over his face.
They knew.
All this time, they knew.
“You knew about this…didn’t you?”
DREA“28 isn’t old.” He defended.“Yes sir.” I mocked and he glared at me playfully. “Where’s your phone?” I asked. He dug his hand into his pocket and pulled it out.He handed me the phone and I opened it.“Wow. No wallpaper? You really do not have a personality.” I stated, staring at the black wallpaper.Who has just a black wallpaper?I entered the App Store and downloaded TikTok.“What are you doing?” He asked and I shushed him.“I’m going to be sending you funny videos to watch over here. You must watch them and tell me if you find them funny or not okay?” I explained, creating a TikTok account for him and following myself.“Okay.” No objections? Okay.“What else?” I said, thinking to myself.“What about books?”“Nah. I hate novels.” I gasped, my eyes widening. “But I’ve read one.”“Only one?” I asked and he nodded.“What’s the title?”“Deep in the valley.” I was definitely going to check that out.“If you hate novels so much, then why do you have such a big ass library in your h
DREAI screamed, clutching the sheets tighter to my body just as my bedside lamp was flicked on.“It’s me.” I froze when I heard his voice.I breathed out, trying to calm my racing heart.“What are you doing here?!!!” I whisper-yelled, moving to the other side of my bed and turning on the other lamp.“I—”“And why were you standing in the shadows like a creep?!” August sighed, running a hand through his hair.“I check every corner of this house before going to bed. I was passing by your wing when I heard something shatter on the floor. I knocked a couple of times but you didn’t answer so I just—”“So you just walk in here?!” I hissed.“I thought someone was in here!” He yelled. My voice went quiet.“I thought someone was in here so I came in to check and saw that you had broken a glass cup next to your bed.” I looked down to see the broken glass cup on the floor.Ohh.“I wanted to clean it up and then you just jolted awake.” He explained, bending down to pick up the glass shards that
DREAHe was this huge bulky guy who stood stiffly by the door.“Who are you?” I asked, clutching my heart.“My name is Vance, Mrs Wolfe.” His deep voice boomed out.“What are you doing here?” I asked with my brow raised.“I’m your new personal bodyguard as of today.” He stated, staring ahead and not looking at me.Personal bodyguard?I walked towards the stairwell and saw that there were now security guards placed inside the house. No!Not inside the house.I can’t breathe with guards around me like this.I made my way towards August’s office and knocked on it.“Come—” I was already in before he could complete his statement.“Drea. Aren’t you supposed to be resting?” He asked, scanning through a pile of documents on his table.“Why are they security guards inside the house?” I asked, crossing my arms over my chest.“At least sit down.” He said, taking off his glasses.“I could barely deal with the guards outside, now they’ve doubled and are placed inside the house??!” I questioned, my
DREA“For the millionth time, I can walk on my own,” I told August who had his arm around me as we exited the car.I got discharged today and I was back at the Wolfe mansion. My eyes scanned the building as I gasped. If I thought the guards before were too much, I don’t know what I’d use to describe their numbers now.August had doubled the number of security guards that were placed outside. No inch of this house didn’t have someone standing next to it.“What is this?” I asked, gesturing to the guards.“Security guards.” He replied simply, brushing it off.“I know what they are.” I shot him a look. “Why have their numbers doubled?”“The last batch didn’t do their jobs properly so they got replaced.” He answered. My eyes widened. This was a completely new set of guards? The others got fired?I opened my mouth to speak but was cut off by Mrs Carrington.“It’s so nice to see you again, Mrs Wolfe. I’m glad you’re okay.” Mrs Carrington exclaimed, reaching out and collecting my hospital ba
DREA“Dude, just go home. You look terrible.” I heard someone say.“I’m not leaving her side. I did that for a few minutes and look at what happened to her.” I heard August say. What happened was not his fault.I was the one who decided to leave.“You haven’t gotten any sleep. Go home and rest.” I heard the other guy say.“I’ll call someone to stay with her.” The guy continued.“Ian, I will be the only one staying with her.” August declared.Hadn’t he slept? So why wasn’t he here when I woke up?“Has the guy been identified?” I heard August ask.“Not yet.” The other guy muttered. What guy?I slowly opened my eyes and stretched my arms to show them that I was awake.I was hungry.I slowly sat up, ignoring the stares from the two guys in the room.“Hi Ian.” I smiled, waving at him as he smiled.“Hey, Drea. How are you feeling?” He asked.I liked Ian.He was the only one in that crazy house who called me by my name and treated me like a friend and not a boss.“I’m okay,” I responded.“Th
DREAI slowly peeled my eyes open, but closed them immediately because the room was so bright. Can someone turn down the sun? My head hurts so much.I tried to figure out my surroundings with closed eyes. The first thing I noticed was the smell of antiseptic. The second was the hand wrapped tightly around mine.My eyes opened slowly again and squinted at the person who was sleeping with their head placed at the edge of the bed and their hand wrapped around mine.August?I slowly made a move to stand up and this person moved in their sleep before slowly sitting up.I sighed, relieved at who it was.“Drea! Are you okay?” Philip asked, his voice rising.I felt a sharp pain hit my head as I raised my hand to clutch my skull.“Please, don’t shout,” I whispered with my eyes closing once again. The door burst open and I heard someone come in.“Drea.”My eyes immediately shot open to see August standing there, a guilty expression written all over his face.He looked terrible. His eyes were b
DREA “What are you talking about?” I mumbled, and they gasped as soon as I entered the kitchen. They ran close to me with their hands clasped and their heads down. “Mrs. Wolfe!” One of them exclaimed, her voice shaky. “What are you talking about?” I asked again. They looked at each other, a
DREA “I still don’t understand why you still work here.” Camille sighed, brewing some coffee. “It’s something to keep me busy.” I replied, serving a customer. “I don’t have school for four months and I can’t stay cooped up in that house anymore.” It felt really good to finally just…breathe. Free
DREA I yawned, stretching my limbs and waking up. I didn't want to get up from this comfy bed. This was the best I had slept in years. sighing, I got up with a groan and headed to the Huse bathroom. Unlike my usual shower which takes minutes to heat up, this one heated up in literal seconds.
DREAThe night sky had stars spread out across it, twinkling brightly.I stared out of the sky, reminiscing about the day I had.I was now Drea Wolfe.I was free from Ivanka.I was…married.I still couldn’t believe it. The cold diamond ring on my finger was a constant reminder that I wasn’t actual
