“Sweetie, you look tired. Why don’t you sell your balut tomorrow?” my father said as I prepared the things I’d need to sell balut around the neighborhood.

“Pa, I can do this. Besides, I rested when I got home, right? So I’m not sleepy, and I have the energy to sell these balut tonight. I’ll just start early so I can finish early,” I explained, but my father’s face was unreadable again.

“I’m just worried, because you know…” he said sadly.

“I know pa, but don’t worry. I’ve been a balut vendor for years, and so far, I’m still alive, aren’t I?” I said, batting my eyelashes at my father. He just shook his head.

“What are you two talking about while I was gone?” We both turned to the door as my mother entered. She had been outside watering her plants.

“This. I told her not to sell balut anymore because we have income from our small store, but she wouldn’t listen,” my father said.

“Oh, yes, You applied for a job earlier, and your feet might hurt from standing, so rest for a while. Let’s do it tomorrow.” Ouch. I thought my mother would be on my side, but she agreed with my father.

I smiled at them both. “I won’t change my mind, Mama and papa. I’m leaving later. Let’s eat dinner early so I can leave and sell early. Who knows, I might be home before nine.” I said.

“I’m sorry Unique. Your father is useless. If I could still walk far, I would do that myself. Forgive me for being useless.” I stopped walking because of my father’s words, so Mom and I immediately went to him.

“Silio! Didn’t we tell you that you’re useful to this family? Just because you have a disability doesn’t mean you’re useless because what you’ve given us is more than enough,” mama said.

“That’s right, papa. So please remove those negative thoughts from your mind and heart. We should just have good vibes. We accept you no matter what. Mom and I love you because you love us so much. Mom and I understand that you want to be able to move around like before, but please don’t push yourself. You’ve already done so much for us. So don’t worry. If I get hired, we’ll add to your stock in the store. Not only that, I’ll buy you a guitar, one of your hobbies. And who knows, while you’re selling, many will buy from us because you’ll be playing the guitar. Right? That’s awesome.”

“I thought you didn’t get hired for the job you applied for?” Mom asked me.

I scratched my head while grinning. “It’s like yes, it’s like no.” I told them.

“Huh?” They reacted at the same time.

“Anyway, before I left their building, they told me I’d know the results of my job application through text, so I’ll just wait. And hopefully…hopefully, I’ll get hired so I won’t have to sell balut anymore. We can sell here at home. For those who want to eat, let’s continue selling balut, which has been our source of income, right? My brain is sometimes amazing because it works, but sometimes it doesn’t,” I said, making them laugh.

“You really are something, kid. Okay, let’s eat so you can go home early. Unique, my usual reminder, bring pepper spray for your protection. And always be observant of your surroundings. If someone approaches you, you should be alert. Most of all, if there are loafers, don’t approach them, unless it’s crowded. But if it’s just a group, don’t sell to them.” Dad instructed.

I nodded at their instructions.

Carrying a styrofoam box where I put the balut, and on the side, the salt and vinegar—someone requested it before, so I brought it.

“Balut! Balut here! Balut!” I shouted to our neighbors. I don’t care if they hear my noise every night. Not everyone buys. “Balut! Baluuuut!” I shouted again.

“Hey kid, I’ll buy some,” I smiled because someone was buying.

“Sure, sir. How many?” I smiled widely.

“Eight balut. We’re having drinks later because one of our friends has a birthday,” he said.

“Wow, perfect timing, sir. You waited for me before you started.”

“The others are still at work, so it’s good you’re early. I was waiting, too.”

“Here you go, sir. And since you’re a regular customer and my first customer tonight, I’ll give you two extra balut, congratulations!” I said, which made the man happy.

“Thank you, kid. Here’s the payment, and thanks for the extra.” After he gave me the payment, I immediately thanked him and happily continued selling my goods because eight balut were already gone.

My luck tonight continued, and only five were left. I made up for my lost income and sold early. I should’ve started early because there were many people outside.

I wasn’t lucky earlier with the job application, but thankfully, my goods didn’t go to waste.

“Balut! Balut here! Buy some! Fresh and always delicious balut I’m selling, yahoo! Balut! Balut!” I was almost hoarse from shouting, but I continued. This is also for papa's medicine.

I saw a parked car on the side of the road. I was about to pass when I saw someone beside it squatting and staring at the tires of his car. Poor guy, his tire’s flat.

I approached. Whatever. “Kuya, you want balut?” I asked smiling, but my smile immediately faded when I saw those sharp eyes looking up at me.

“You? You again!”

“B-brother, you’re… I mean, you’re with someone else now.” Shit! Why am I stuttering? It’s just him, and the woman who just called him her girlfriend. The woman still had her arms linked through Izaak’s. I just chose to ignore it. “You’re still up? What time is it?” he asked, I'm forcing a smile. What excuse should I give? Hmm. “Uhmm, what? I was just thinking of going out,” I lied. “This late?” Sigh, does he not want me to? Or does he actually want me to see the two of them being affectionate inside the room while I’m standing here? Am I crazy or something? “Yeah, I was. I’ve been feeling bored, and besides, I’m not even sleepy— I slept the whole day today, so I thought I’d go out for a little while at least,” was all I could come up with. “Let her go, babe, let’s talk about us inside. Hmm.” The woman said in a playful, suggestive tone. I almost rolled my eyes at her, but I held myself back. Let them do whatever they want inside their own lives. As for me, I’m going out to un

“We have a meeting this afternoon with architects and engineers. You’ll be staying here at the villa. There’s a site we need to visit. Is that okay with you? Or would you rather come with me?” asked Izaak as we ate breakfast. He had only just ordered the food when I woke up, and we decided to eat inside instead of going out, he said I probably wasn’t up to walking around, yet, since I’d just woken up and was still tired from what had happened the night before. I wanted to ask him why he’d dressed me instead of waking me up, but I suddenly felt shy. I didn’t feel ready for his answer, and I was afraid my face would turn red. I hoped… I hoped he have his eyes closed while he was getting me dressed, or that maybe I’d dressed myself and just couldn’t remember. Ugh, I don’t know. From how I felt, nothing inappropriate had happened between us while I was unconscious. There was no pain anywhere on my body except my feet, which were sore from dancing the night before. “I can come

"You are jealous, Miss Mahinhin!" I suddenly turned around to face him, who was following me. I stared at him with a frown. What was he talking about? He was suddenly surprised by what I did, so he also stopped walking. However, I saw how the edge of his lip rose as he looked down at me because he was tall and I was only up to his shoulder.I looked at him sharply, so he suddenly became serious.I pointed to myself, even though I saw two of him because I was so dizzy from the wine I drank earlier and the sudden dancing. "Me, jealous? You've been accusing me of that for a while now, what are you referring to? When you and your girlfriend were making out before saying goodbye? For your information, boss, I respect two people who are in a relationship. What do you think of me? Do I like porn so I can watch you two up close? Are you crazy? So in short, I'm not jealous of you two. I was just annoyed earlier because you pulled me in the middle of my dancing with your friends. We left there

When we arrived at the bar, I didn't know why everyone kept looking at me. I thought they were looking at Kuya Izaak, but it turned out they were looking at me. "Tsk, I told you we should have changed your clothes," Boss whispered to me. I elbowed him lightly, making him wince in pain. I brought my mouth close to his ear. "Whose fault is it anyway? You're the one who took this from my closet, and now you're complaining." "Because I didn't know that what I took from the closet was like that, and why did you choose to bring something like that with all the clothes I bought you?" "And where is this conversation going to lead, is it just about my clothes?" I asked because I was wearing a black backless dress, so my back was showing, and he had been asking me to wear his jacket, but I didn't want to. That's why we were a bit late inside the room because we had been arguing for a while. I just put it on my shoulders to cover my back, but I didn't really wear it so I would still have so

"Am I really sleeping here with you?" I asked him, looking back at the bed. The bed was wide and had five pillows, I could probably put some in the middle as a barrier, and besides, we've slept together in my room before, so why am I so nervous? Maybe it's because we're in a different place now, because at home I sometimes let him sleep in my room because mommy or daddy are there. And so far, he hasn't done anything bad to me except sleep soundly next to me, and between the two of us, I think I'm the only one who tosses and turns in my sleep. I looked at the sofa in the room and saw that it was wide and long, maybe I could sleep there later, what do you think? "Yes, and you can go to sleep first and I'll follow later because my companions are still drinking. I'll join them." He said, and I thought about what he said. I checked the time on my wristwatch and saw that it was still early to sleep. "I'll sleep later too because it's still early, and besides, it would be a waste to spe

"Where in Batangas are we going, Kuya Boss?" I asked, because he might suddenly leave me here, at least I'd know this place. "Kuya Boss, huh?" he smirked. "Oh, that's just what I'll call you because you're my Kuya and my Boss, cool, right?" I said and immediately took off my seatbelt to get out of the car. I grabbed my black bag from the backseat, and while tying up my long hair, I looked around. We're at a villa resort now. "Nasugbu, Batangas, and we're here now at my friend's villa. They thought of this as the meeting place," he answered. "Let's go!" I immediately followed him. He was talking to a staff member, and because I'm ignorant, I didn't let the opportunity pass to take pictures of the whole villa and the place in Batangas. "Yes, this way sir." The female staff pointed, and Boss and I followed. He didn't let me get left behind, maybe he knows that I'm a shy person. He put his arm around my waist so we could walk together. "Do you own this villa?" I just had to ask.

I almost buried myself in the carpet because I was so ashamed of not recognizing the boss of this building, and he was right in front of me. I thought my job would be as a secretary, but it turned out to be an office cleaner.
