“That went better than I thought it would,” Erin said as we sat down in her room, but I wasn’t paying attention. My mind was on Gregory, who was probably asleep in the next room. After Turner had put me in his care, he had moved me out of the shabby room I’d been staying in and into their own home.

“Don’t worry about me. I’ve been used to being researched all my life, so this is child’s play compared to what I’ve experienced,” I reassured her.

“You still haven’t told me your story,” Erin said.

“Nothing is interesting to tell,” I said. The events after the horrible ones that followed my forced marriage to Jordan came flooding back into my mind.

“I think I should sleep. It’s been a long day,” I said, lying down on the bed.

I found myself back in the bushes surrounding my house, and suddenly the goons appeared again. This time, the wolves were tall—the size of horses—and larger than hippopotamuses. Scared, I turned and ran, and they followed, surrounding me with every step they took.

I screamed for help as I ran, my heart beating fast. I turned to see how much distance I had gained from them and immediately tripped over a tree trunk. Before I could get up, I found that the wolves had developed hands and were grabbing me, trying to drag me down.

Just then, Jordan appeared.

“You have been a very bad girl, haven’t you? But your little adventure is over, and now you will pay the ultimate price,” he said. He drew his claws and lunged at me.

“Get the fuck up!” Erin shouted, dragging me out of the forest and into her bedroom.

I was dazed for a moment before I remembered.

“You were screaming. Bad dream?” she asked.

“Nightmares, I think,” I replied, getting out of bed before she could ask more.

I walked into the bathroom to take a shower, and as the cold water dripped down my body, I couldn’t help but think about that night. That was when I remembered—

—When the alpha saved me. His wolf killed two of the goons before he appeared. That was the first time I had ever seen something like that, and I decided to ask Erin about it.

As soon as I left the shower and got dressed, I went and sat beside Erin, who was on one side of the room with some herbs, probably studying them.

“I want to ask you about something,” I said, sitting beside her.

“What?” she asked, not looking up from the herbs.

“So, the night Turner saved me… I saw him standing with his wolf beside him. Like he was literally separated from his wolf.”

“Are you sure?” Erin asked immediately, looking up.

“I’m pretty sure,” I replied.

“Maybe you were having hallucinations. But I’ve read about separated wolves somewhere before. I’m not sure how it’s done—or if it’s even real,” she said.

“Maybe we should ask your brother, if he knows something,” I suggested.

“No, we won’t. If word gets to Turner that you’re asking questions, he might think you’re a spy and send you away. I think you should keep quiet about it. It’s probably a fragment of your imagination and not worth getting kicked out for,” she advised.

I nodded, leaving the room and bumping straight into a sweaty, shirtless Gregory coming into the house. For a moment, I was lost, staring at his abs and muscles.

“Hi. Did you just wake up?” he asked, giving me a warm smile.

“No, it’s been a while,” I replied.

“Okay,” he said, about to leave, then suddenly turned back. “And hey, I’m sorry about what happened last night. You’re new to the pack, and people still have their reservations about you.”

“It’s fine. I’m used to that kind of thing,” I said.

“Nobody should have to be used to that. And we can do something about it,” he said.

“What?” I asked.

“A few weeks ago, one of the deltas died and hasn’t been replaced. You can take at least that slot. I think you’re strong—you’ll have to train again.”

He suggested it.

“Girls are allowed to be one of the deltas here?” I asked, having forgotten the incident at the gym where the girls were training with the boys.

“Erin didn’t tell you? Here, everyone is equal—man and woman,” he said.

“Okay… I’d like to join.”

  • CAUGHT BETWEEN WOLVES    chapter fourteen

The summons came from Lady Victoria herself, not through an elder or a runner boy the way Turner usually sent his instructions. She found me at the edge of the training yard, waited until I'd finished wiping the sweat from my face, and said only, "Walk with me," in a tone that made it clear this wasn't a request I was meant to weigh.I followed her to a long stone building I hadn't been inside before, its shelves crowded floor to ceiling with books bound in cracked leather, the air thick with the smell of old paper and something faintly herbal underneath it. She sat me at a table near the window and, without any preamble, held out her hand."The pendant," she said. "May I?"I hesitated only a second before lifting it over my head and placing it in her palm. It was the only thing I still had from before—from my mother, from the life that had tried to kill me three separate times in one night. I hadn't let it out of my sight since.Victoria turned it over slowly, holding it up to the wi

Gregory was already at the guild when I arrived the next morning, sleeves pushed up, going through a set of drills alone in the grey early light. He stopped when he saw me and something in his face opened up, surprised and pleased all at once.“You’re up early,” he said. “I half expected you to still be recovering.”“I feel better than I have in years,” I told him, and it was the truth. My body didn’t ache. My mind, for once, wasn’t crowded with Jordan’s voice or my mother’s or the memory of my own name in Mira’s mouth turned into an accusation. “Teach me something.”He studied me a moment, head tilted, like he was recalibrating something. “All right. Let’s start with the basics. Stance. Control. You don’t need to be in your wolf skin to pull on wolf strength—you just need to know how to ask for it without opening the whole door.”He showed me the stance, feet planted, weight low, and told me to reach for the thing under my skin the way I’d reach for a held breath. I closed my eyes an

The water did not feel like water anymore. It felt like hands, closing around my throat, my wrists, my ankles, pulling me down into something with no bottom.I stopped fighting. There was nothing left in me to fight with. The last thing I remembered was the burn of water in my lungs, and then even that stopped hurting, and I understood, distantly, that this was probably what dying felt like—quiet, and a little bit like falling asleep in the wrong direction. Then the water was gone, and so was I.I was standing somewhere that had no floor and no sky, only a kind of endless grey dark, soft under my feet like it had been waiting for me. I turned in a slow circle, looking for a wall, a door, anything, and found nothing.“Hello?” My voice didn’t echo. It just disappeared, swallowed whole.A sound answered me. Small. Wounded. Somewhere to my left.I walked toward it, my bare feet silent on the nothing beneath them, and the shape of something enormous slowly resolved out of the dark—white fu

  • CAUGHT BETWEEN WOLVES    chapter 11

Chelsea’s POVThe next day, Erin unexpectedly announced that I was going to the Lyre, a cave at one part of the pack with a rocky entrance, and inside it was Era’s almighty Merisa— which she could not be more mesmerized by. I myself was also extremely curious to see what would happen and how it would feel, since it would be my first encounter with magic aside from fairytale stories back at Jordan’s pack. Thank God I was free from that beast now.I followed Erin and the entire group of healers through a rocky path surrounded by bushes that led to the Lyre. Gregory had wanted to come, but only the healers and Alpha were allowed to enter unless you were the one being treated, like me. All through the walk, I’d feel Lyra through the corners of my eyes, staring daggers at me. I wondered why she hates me.When we arrived at the cave, Erin led me inside while the rest waited outside. I found myself standing in a sitting-room-sized space inside the cave, with large gardens of herbs at eve

Chelsea’s POVAfter dinner, I followed Erin to take a walk outside in the garden, which was lush with planted roses.“You shouldn’t have let her beat you,” Erin suddenly said. “Everyone must think you’re weak now.”“Who are you talking about, Maya?” I asked, and she nodded in affirmation.“I didn’t let her beat me. She was simply stronger,” I said, sounding rather calm and sheepish.“But you didn’t partial shift, ’cause if you did, Gregory and the others would have felt your energy and your claws could have come out,” she said, then continued, “I get it. If you don’t want any problems. But a weak wolf getting a free pass into the warriors’ guild just makes people hate you all the more.”“I can’t shift or partial shift,” I reveal, half expecting her to scream or something.“How? You are a wolf. Every wolf can,” she replied.“I have only shifted once—the night the Alpha rescued me,” I explained.“So you don’t know how to shift?” Erin asked, nodding, hoping she could see my head moving i

I woke up to find myself back at Erin’s room, with her and her brother, Gregory, arguing.“Are you sure the potion you gave her was the right one?” Gregory asked in a worry-filled voice, still pacing the room.“Yes,” Erin said, running her fingers through her hair. They were both so worried that they didn’t notice my open eyes.“Perhaps the potion was not rightly mixed. Maybe you—”“I did not make a mistake. The potions were mixed right, and you had better stop questioning my efficiency,” Erin fired back.“Well, if your drugs were working, I would not be lying so—” Gregory replied hotly, and Erin was about to respond when I found my strength and tried to get up, making the bed creak and getting their attention.“You’re up?” Gregory asked, rushing to my side.“I am not dead,” I said jokingly.“We have not told you otherwise,” Erin said, smiling.“I’m really glad you survived it. I don’t know what would have happened if they kept letting you fight,” Gregory said.“I told you he hates me

“Fifteen against fourteen. I guess you’re staying then,” Lady Victoria said, and a wide grin spread across my face. I turned to the Beta—the man whose vote had just saved me.
