SLEEP ON IT NOVA I'm so engrossed in staring at my phone and biting my fingernails nervously that I don't notice when Enzo's eyes land on me. “Nova?” He asks. I nearly throw my phone across the staircase. My head slowly snaps up. He's staring directly at me from the living room, his dark brows pulled together sharply. Shit. Shit. Shit. Triple Shit. Noah twists around on the couch. "Jesus, you scared me." Think. Act normal. Act normal. I force my face into confusion, lifting the water bottle awkwardly. “I forgot this.” Enzo’s eyes narrow slightly. He's not buying any of this. Not at all. “You’ve been lurking there this whole time?” Noah asks. I shrug, trying for casual. “You two sounded intense. I didn’t wanna interrupt your bromance moment.” Noah rolls his eyes instantly. “You’re so weird.” I let out a small laugh. Please believe me. Please. Enzo still hasn’t looked away from me. His jaw is tight now. “You good?” he finally asks slowly. And maybe it’s guilt. Maybe panic. But suddenly I can’t breathe properly under his stare. “Yeah,” I answer too quickly. “Why wouldn’t I be?” His gaze lingers another second too long before he finally leans back against the couch again. “Paranoid,” Noah mutters toward him. “Can you blame me?” Enzo shoots back quietly. I grip the water bottle tighter. “Anyway, I’m going upstairs before you both start crying over each other again.” “Good,” Noah says. “And stop eavesdropping.” “I literally wasn’t.” “Mhm.” I force another fake smile before turning around. Then I practically speed-walk upstairs. The second my bedroom door closes behind me, I lock it and rest my back against it. My chest rises and falls rapidly. Oh my God. Oh my God. For a second, I just stand there frozen. Then I replay the last ten seconds. Enzo’s voice fills my room. A shiver crawls down my arms as I listen to everything. This isn’t some stupid cheating rumor or locker room fight. Like I said, this is massive. The kind of story that spreads beyond Ridgeview. The kind people screenshot and repost. The kind that destroys reputations overnight. The worst part of it is that, it's true. I drop onto my bed hard, staring at the audio file. Then immediately grab my phone again and call the only person I trust with this kind of thing. Ava answers on the second ring. “Well, damn,” she says. “Usually you text before trauma-dumping.” “You are not going to believe what I just heard.” “Ooo,” she says instantly. “That tone means gossip.” “This is not gossip.” I tell her. If I'm going to tell her this, then I have to trust her to take it seriously. “That somehow makes it hotter. Continue.” I sit up quickly, lowering my voice even though my door is locked. “Okay, so you can't talk to anyone about this. Anyone at all." "I promise, Nova. Just spill." "I came downstairs and Noah and Enzo were talking...” “Enzo, Enzo?” What the hell does she even mean? “You know the Enzo.” I say. “Your brother's best friend?” “Yes, Ava.” “So? What's new? They always talk.” I groan. “Can you focus?” “Never.” I ignore her. “Anyway, I accidentally overheard them talking about some girl being pregnant.” "What?” “And Enzo’s apparently the father.” Ava shrieks so loudly I yank the phone away from my ear. “No freaking way.” “Yes freaking way.” “Oh my God.” “I know.” I get up and start pacing my room. “And it gets worse,” I whisper. “He told Noah he wanted her to get an abortion because he can’t let the baby ruin his career.” “Nova…” “I recorded it.” “You what?” “I didn’t mean to at first,” I rush out. “I just... my phone was already in my hand and... and Ava, this could literally destroy him.” “Yeah, no kidding.” I run a hand through my hair frantically. “You know what this means, right?” “That Enzo Moretti is officially trash?” “Ava!” “What? He told a pregnant girl to get rid of the baby!” “We don’t know the whole situation.” “You’re defending him already?” “I’m not defending him,” I argue instantly. Except maybe I am a little. And I hate that. Because no matter how awful this sounds… part of me still sees the boy downstairs laughing in our living room five minutes ago. “Nova,” Ava says carefully now, “what are you gonna do with the recording?” I stop pacing. I can already see it. All of the headlines, the many clicks... the attention... all of it. This story would finally put me ahead of Mia Thompson for good. “You’re not seriously thinking about posting that tonight, are you?” Ava asks. I don't know. To be honest, part of me already has the article halfway written in my head. Ridgeview Captain Involved in Pregnancy Scandal. No. That's too tabloid-ish. Wolves Captain Facing Serious Allegations... “Nope,” Ava says suddenly. I blink. “What?” “I can literally hear you brainstorming headlines through the phone.” “I’m not...” “You are definitely." I flop backward onto my bed dramatically, pressing my free hand over my face. “This is huge, Ava.” “I know it’s huge.” “No, you don’t understand.” Words spill out faster now. “Mia’s been destroying me all semester. If she gets another exclusive before me, Mr. Lawson’s seriously gonna reconsider my position next year.” “And you think exposing your brother’s best friend is the answer?” I stare at the ceiling silently. The thing is… I don’t know. That’s the problem. Because journalism is journalism, right? Stories are stories. If this was literally anyone else on the hockey team, I wouldn’t even hesitate. But it’s Enzo. “You heard what he said,” I mumble finally. “That girl’s pregnant and he’s talking about her like she’s some inconvenience.” Ava sighs softly. “Yeah. That part sucks.” “Sucks?” I sit up again. “Ava, it’s horrible.” “It is horrible,” she agrees quickly. “But you still don’t know the full story.” “I just…” I rub my forehead tiredly. “I don’t know what to do.” For the first time since the call started, Ava’s voice softens completely. “Then don’t decide tonight.” I go quiet. “Nova, you’re emotional right now. You’re stressed about Mia, stressed about school, and you literally overheard life-ruining information like ten minutes ago.” I swallow hard. “So sleep on it,” she continues. “Seriously. Put your phone down. Breathe. And decide tomorrow when your brain isn’t in full chaos mode.” That actually sounds smart. Which means I probably need to listen. “I hate when you act mature,” I grumble. “I know. It’s my best quality.” A tiny laugh slips out of me before I can stop it. “Promise me you won’t post anything tonight,” Ava says. I hesitate. “Nova.” “I’m thinking.” “That’s not a promise.” “Fine,” I mutter eventually. “I won’t post tonight.”NOVAMy mouth opens, whilst my eyes are moving, they finally settle on Bethany who's behind Caleb now. She winks at me, mouthing a 'Make sure you kiss him' before retreating and leaving me with Caleb."Um..." I glance down at my legs, breathing in a little. Sure, I like the way he's not laughing with the girl from earlier and he's with me now. But then... I don't like the way Bethany pushed me on him and now I don't have any fucking words to say. It's more like I forgot what to say. What will I possibly say to him in this moment? "Speechless?" Caleb tilts his head.I let out a nervous laugh. "Oh no. I just... My brother asked me to stay away from you." I say the one rational thing I can think of."Did he now?" Caleb doesn't look surprised one bit."Yes." I nod, while I'm still racking my brain for anything to say. Bethany said to flirt. I don't know how to fucking flirt. I'm not a flirt. Never have been."Look, we're both adults right?" Caleb asks."In Highschool." I put in. That mak
NOVAAfter what happened with my mom and Noah last night, and after the text I sent Caleb... I don't know. I'm feeling pretty good about myself this morning. I'm not even fucking joking. I fucking devoured the avocado toast mom made me for breakfast and I'm actually humming my head right now to a rap music blasting through mom's speaker in her car."You feeling good baby?" Mom looks at me. Her smile is infectious. I return it with mine, nodding my head and moving my leg to the beat of the song."That's what I'm talking about. You should feel this good everyday. I like the energy today. Anything different?" I don't know if I should tell her or not. I basically don't tell my mom everything, but I do tell her some basic things that I feel she's supposed to know. Like this. I'm sure she'd be super excited for me. I just... I just don't trust her enough to keep it from Noah and Enzo or Dad. Emphasis on my father. He detests extracurriculars and would make me change schools if he knew abo
NOVA"Noah, no. I will not have to talk to your sister like that, not when I'm standing in front of you.""But mom...""No." "She's fucking with a guy she shouldn't be around at all. He's bad news. If you care about your daughter you'd tell her to stay away from that guy."Mom looks at me, and I can see the doubt that flashes across her face. She's skeptical of whether she should ask me anything about what Noah is sprouting. "Ask her. She'll tell you." Noah probes mom."Nova, what does he mean?" I resist the urge to say something disrespectful. It's hard... but I can. "Caleb is my friend." "You don't know him.""I know him well enough to know the kind of person he is. And don't talk to me, both of you.""Nova, stop. Don't be rude to your...""I'm tired of everyone treating me like trash just because I made a mistake. I don't care about the others at school. I care about my own brother! He's been treating me so badly and I didn't even do shit to him! It was just Enzo and I apologiz
NOVA"He'll do it. He's crazy like that." Liam grins, winking at me from his sprawl on the sofa. Not that I believe Liam or anything, but for some reason, I don't want to be here anymore. "I think that's my cue to leave," I say, pushing myself up from the plush cushions of the couch, a slight sigh escaping my lips.Caleb's eyes widen slightly. "I was joking," he says quickly, taking a step toward me, his hands raising in a placating gesture."I know," I answer, giving him a small smile that doesn't quite reach my eyes. "I just think it's late and I don't want my mom to be worried." A convenient excuse, but not entirely untrue.Caleb relaxes, nodding in understanding. He runs a hand through his hair. "Let me drop you off then."He gets up, tossing the unopened first-aid kit onto the cushion beside Liam, who simply watches us with an amused smirk, already reaching for the remote."Goodbye Nova. Do you think I'll be seeing you anytime soon?" He asks as I get to the door.I shrug, feignin
NOVA"What the hell?" My voice is a whisper even though I know Caleb is on a call and is a little bit far from where we're standing."What do you mean... what the hell? The task? The one I gave to you? The offer to be a..."I wave a hand in front of Bethany's face. "Yes, yes. I know all about that. I don't need a reminder. I just don't... I don't get what you mean by that?"Bethany folds her hands, glaring at me. "What I mean?" She repeats.I heave a sigh. "I mean I do get you but... I just...""Nova Graham! Are you going to talk to Caleb, make him fall for you and break his heart? The sisters want to see if you are a material for..."I can't with this girl right now. Caleb is still pacing but I'm sure at any moment from now he'll turn and see us. What if his call ends now and he walks over to us and hears what Bethany is saying?"Look, this is bad timing." I mutter."Why are you murmuring? He can't hear...""I don't care. He's my friend." I say, my frown deepening.Bethany smirks. "O
NOVA I blink as Enzo leaves the class, leaving me and Caleb alone. Without wasting any time, I rush to Caleb, my eyes widening as I take in the way he looks. He has a split lip and his face has a tear. There are a lot of bruises on his face. He groans when he tries to move and stays still. Noah really did hurt him a lot. What do I do now? I can't report to the school that my brother did this, can I? Fuck this. I bend down and touch Caleb's face. He scowls, pushing my hand away from his face."Don't." He mutters."You're badly hurt." I say. "You need to see the school nurse or something...""Your brother did this to me. Stop acting like you didn't see it." Caleb inhales deeply and he sits up in an upright position."Yeah, after you said stuff that made him lose his temper." I say, still standing on it. "That was a shitty thing to say, especially to Noah."Caleb scoffs. "I didn't lie about anything. I meant everything I said. Fuck!" He groans, shutting his eyes."Stay still and I'll c
