LOGINNOVA
I barely sleep. And I'm promising and being honest that it's not because of the task. It's not because of the stupid envelope sitting on my desk like some kind of threat. It's because of my Mom. The way she looked when she realized she had been setting out plates for two people who weren't coming home. The way she laughed like she could brush it off, but I saw the hurt behind her eyes. She misses them. She misses Noah and Enzo. And maybe I'm selfish for thinking this, but it hurts knowing that they're not only avoiding me. They're avoiding her too. I understand Noah being angry. I understand Enzo wanting nothing to do with me. I deserve whatever anger they have toward me. But Mom? She didn't do anything. If I find either of them at school today, or cross paths with them, I'm taking my chances and starting a conversation. I don't know how. I don't know if they'll even let me get close enough to explain myself. If they still hate me after hearing the truth and all they're doing to mom, then fine. At least I'll know I tried. I throw on my clothes the next morning, barely touching my breakfast before leaving the house. I arrive late at school today. If Mom had driven me, I know it wouldn't have been the case. Since I walked... here am I. People are still staring at me. The whispers haven't even gone away. But I don't care as much today. I'm thinking it's because my mind is already somewhere else. It's on finding my brother and his friend. I know where they'll be by this time. I barely make it past the hallway near the lockers when I hear my name. "Nova." I stop and turn around. Isn't it too early for this? I haven't given the girls a second thought since last night. I turn slowly and see Bethany standing there with Kayda, Halana, and Genevieve. The Sigma Omega girls. "Good morning," Bethany says, smiling like we're old friends. I let her know that we're not when I don't return her smile. "Can we talk?" I blurt out, despite my initial reaction to their presence. Kayda raises an eyebrow. "You're already here." I ignore her, looking straight at Bethany. "About my task." The smile on Bethany's face doesn't disappear, but it changes. "Already?" She glances at her sisters... or friends... or whatever the hell they're called. "Yes." I cross my arms. "I want to change it." I say. This is something I was thinking about, but I wasn't sure I'd get the courage to ask. Now it's out, I just have to hear what Bethany will say. "I figured you'd ask," Bethany says. "Then you know it's ridiculous." I offer. "It's a challenge." She's still standing on the task. "What you want me to do is stupid. It's ridiculous. You girls know the amount of hate I have in school and doing any of the tasks will only add to it. I'm not a backstabber or a bitch." Kayda scoffs. "Interesting coming from someone who recorded a private conversation." I send her a hateful glare. What the hell is her problem? "I didn't post it." "But you made it." She insists. There it is again. The same thing everyone says. I swallow the anger rising in my throat. "Can we not do this? I'm not asking to leave. I'm asking if we can switch tasks." Bethany tilts her head. "With who?" I glance at the girls. "Gia's. Or Serenity's." A small laugh escapes Kayda. "Absolutely not." "Why?" "Because those tasks were made for them." "And mine was made for me?" I ask bitterly. Bethany doesn't answer immediately. That tells me everything. "You know I can't do that," she finally says. "Please..." Fuck. I can't believe I'm actually begging. "Girl, your task isn't about the person you're supposed to hurt." I frown. What the hell does that mean now? "It's about finding out what kind of person you really are." I stare at her. "That's bullshit. I'm a good person. I've not done one thing to hurt anybody until the recording. And let's be real. You want me to destroy someone who likes me just to prove something?" "Don't see it that way. The girls just want to know. I especially want to know if you still care about being good when being good gets you nothing." "You don't know me." I press my lips together. "None of you do. If you people know me, then you'd know that I can't do it." "Look who's talking. Just now wasn't she begging to be switched with Serenity or Gia?" Kayda says and then a snort leaves her. I shut my eyes and reopen them. Now, I'm glaring at Kayda. "Okay, can you not be a bitch?" "Kayda... be nice." Bethany glances at her. "Look, just think about it." She tells me before storming off, the girls trailing behind her. I walk away before they can say anything else. Fuck them again. I need air, and space. I spot Ava, standing by the lockers, talking to two girls from Phi Delta. "Do it. Go and tell her." One of the girls nudge Ava who looks at me before shaking her head. "I can't." She tells them. "No, but you will. Or else..."NOVAAs much as I need that hug from Ava right now, I'm so thrown off by what she says preceding it. That she's not supposed to? What the hell is that supposed to mean? "I don't..." I raise my hand, shaking my head. "I don't want that hug right now."She twists her lips, looking everywhere but at me. Her eyes are roaming around random things and she won't even look at me. "So, what do you want?" "What I want is for you to explain what you meant by that statement. You're not supposed to? I don't understand what you mean by that."Ava does a low whistle. "I don't want you to be upset about this. No hard feelings. But my mom saw the scandal." Oh no. This better not be what I think it is. I don't want to hear shit about Ava's mom thinking that I'm trash when I haven't done anything wrong at all."She warned me about you and...""I don't know what to say."Ava shrugs. "Then you don't have to say anything.""No, I think I do. I think you are the most manipulative, two-faced, bitch I've
NOVAMy mouth opens, whilst my eyes are moving, they finally settle on Bethany who's behind Caleb now. She winks at me, mouthing a 'Make sure you kiss him' before retreating and leaving me with Caleb."Um..." I glance down at my legs, breathing in a little. Sure, I like the way he's not laughing with the girl from earlier and he's with me now. But then... I don't like the way Bethany pushed me on him and now I don't have any fucking words to say. It's more like I forgot what to say. What will I possibly say to him in this moment? "Speechless?" Caleb tilts his head.I let out a nervous laugh. "Oh no. I just... My brother asked me to stay away from you." I say the one rational thing I can think of."Did he now?" Caleb doesn't look surprised one bit."Yes." I nod, while I'm still racking my brain for anything to say. Bethany said to flirt. I don't know how to fucking flirt. I'm not a flirt. Never have been."Look, we're both adults right?" Caleb asks."In Highschool." I put in. That mak
NOVAAfter what happened with my mom and Noah last night, and after the text I sent Caleb... I don't know. I'm feeling pretty good about myself this morning. I'm not even fucking joking. I fucking devoured the avocado toast mom made me for breakfast and I'm actually humming my head right now to a rap music blasting through mom's speaker in her car."You feeling good baby?" Mom looks at me. Her smile is infectious. I return it with mine, nodding my head and moving my leg to the beat of the song."That's what I'm talking about. You should feel this good everyday. I like the energy today. Anything different?" I don't know if I should tell her or not. I basically don't tell my mom everything, but I do tell her some basic things that I feel she's supposed to know. Like this. I'm sure she'd be super excited for me. I just... I just don't trust her enough to keep it from Noah and Enzo or Dad. Emphasis on my father. He detests extracurriculars and would make me change schools if he knew abo
NOVA"Noah, no. I will not have to talk to your sister like that, not when I'm standing in front of you.""But mom...""No." "She's fucking with a guy she shouldn't be around at all. He's bad news. If you care about your daughter you'd tell her to stay away from that guy."Mom looks at me, and I can see the doubt that flashes across her face. She's skeptical of whether she should ask me anything about what Noah is sprouting. "Ask her. She'll tell you." Noah probes mom."Nova, what does he mean?" I resist the urge to say something disrespectful. It's hard... but I can. "Caleb is my friend." "You don't know him.""I know him well enough to know the kind of person he is. And don't talk to me, both of you.""Nova, stop. Don't be rude to your...""I'm tired of everyone treating me like trash just because I made a mistake. I don't care about the others at school. I care about my own brother! He's been treating me so badly and I didn't even do shit to him! It was just Enzo and I apologiz
NOVA"He'll do it. He's crazy like that." Liam grins, winking at me from his sprawl on the sofa. Not that I believe Liam or anything, but for some reason, I don't want to be here anymore. "I think that's my cue to leave," I say, pushing myself up from the plush cushions of the couch, a slight sigh escaping my lips.Caleb's eyes widen slightly. "I was joking," he says quickly, taking a step toward me, his hands raising in a placating gesture."I know," I answer, giving him a small smile that doesn't quite reach my eyes. "I just think it's late and I don't want my mom to be worried." A convenient excuse, but not entirely untrue.Caleb relaxes, nodding in understanding. He runs a hand through his hair. "Let me drop you off then."He gets up, tossing the unopened first-aid kit onto the cushion beside Liam, who simply watches us with an amused smirk, already reaching for the remote."Goodbye Nova. Do you think I'll be seeing you anytime soon?" He asks as I get to the door.I shrug, feignin
NOVA"What the hell?" My voice is a whisper even though I know Caleb is on a call and is a little bit far from where we're standing."What do you mean... what the hell? The task? The one I gave to you? The offer to be a..."I wave a hand in front of Bethany's face. "Yes, yes. I know all about that. I don't need a reminder. I just don't... I don't get what you mean by that?"Bethany folds her hands, glaring at me. "What I mean?" She repeats.I heave a sigh. "I mean I do get you but... I just...""Nova Graham! Are you going to talk to Caleb, make him fall for you and break his heart? The sisters want to see if you are a material for..."I can't with this girl right now. Caleb is still pacing but I'm sure at any moment from now he'll turn and see us. What if his call ends now and he walks over to us and hears what Bethany is saying?"Look, this is bad timing." I mutter."Why are you murmuring? He can't hear...""I don't care. He's my friend." I say, my frown deepening.Bethany smirks. "O
