Chapter 4

Author: Anonymous
The day of Lance's follow-up appointment, Mom made a point of taking leave so she could take him out and take his mind off things.

I remembered when I had a high fever and lay unconscious in bed, Mom had refused to stay home to take care of me. The excuse she gave was that work came first.

So, why had that changed now?

It turned out that for Lance, she was willing to set aside every last one of her principles.

I gently closed my eyes, unwilling to dwell any longer on all the grievances I had suffered in the past. But when I saw how tenderly Mom asked about Lance's health, I still felt jealous.

She carefully read through the medical report in her hands.

"The doctor said you don't have any major problems—you're pretty much all better now. I just knew it—someone as blessed as you always lands on their feet. There was no way anything bad was going to happen to you."

When I saw her relax, I wished so badly I could remind her that she still had another son.

Perhaps a trace of conscience still remained, because Mom finally remembered me, her eldest son, who had been completely cast aside and forgotten.

She furrowed her brows and asked, "Has Brett not contacted you during this time either?"

At the mention of my name, Lance tensed up for a moment. Then, he forced a casual smile and said, "He's never wanted to talk to me anyway, so of course he wouldn't contact me. Mom, let's just go home."

With that, he hurriedly stood up and reached for Mom's hand, anxious that she might think of me again.

But this time, Mom actually pulled her hand back, looking somewhat doubtful.

In the past, no matter how big a tantrum I threw, I would always come crawling back within a few days to admit my mistakes. So, how could it be that now there wasn't a single message from me?

Could something really have happened to me?

But she quickly dismissed that thought.

After all, my character was so rotten beyond belief that I was probably hiding somewhere, living it up, and making them worry on purpose.

Mom smiled at Lance. "You must be tired. I'll go pay the fees and then take you home. I bought lots of your favorite things to cook you a big sumptuous meal today."

Lance finally breathed a sigh of relief and nodded quickly.

Mom knocked on the doctor's office door and handed over Lance's medical records.

After the doctor gave a few instructions, Mom casually asked, "When was Brett discharged from the hospital? Why hasn't he come home yet? As far as I can see, it was just a minor injury—is there really any need for him to make such a big fuss about it?"

She rambled on, completely unaware that the doctor had suddenly stopped writing. By the time she sensed something was off, the doctor's expression had already grown deeply troubled.

"Are you really not aware of what happened to Brett?"

Mom found it strange. "He hasn't even come home, so how would I know? Don't tell me he's caused trouble again. All that good-for-nothing ever does is cause me trouble every single day!"

As a mother, her first reaction wasn't to worry about my safety, but to suspect that I had gotten into trouble. When things between a mother and son had come to this, there was really nothing left to speak of.

The doctor let out a heavy sigh, then pulled out a medical file and placed it on the table.

"Brett passed away on the day of the car accident. His injuries were too severe to be treated. His death was rather tragic. I'm so sorry for your loss."

The office instantly fell into silence.

Mom stared at the file marked "Deceased" in her trembling hands.

Her mind went completely blank, leaving only the doctor's somewhat sympathetic words echoing, "Brett has already passed away. It was a car accident. It's a pity—if he had been brought in earlier, there might still have been a chance to save him."

Lance said coldly.Mom, who had just barely managed to calm down, instantly broke down again.Seeing her about to slap herself once more, Esther quickly grabbed hold of her."Mrs. Howell, this isn't your fault. You were also deceived by Lance's sweet words. We were all fooled by him. He's the real monster."Lance didn't care at all what others said about him. He only cared about whether his own goals had been achieved. When he heard what Esther said, he burst out laughing."I fooled you all? Fine. But have you ever thought about your own fault in this? Did I force this old hag not to save Brett?"She knew perfectly well that it was Brett who pushed her out of harm's way, yet she turned a blind eye to his suffering. Just like she spent over a decade silently condoning the way I bullied him!"A sudden tremor ran through Mom's thin and frail body. She lowered her head, not daring to meet the eyes of anyone present. Tears suddenly streamed from her

When Lance was brought to the police station in a daze, Mom had already been crying her heart out, to the point of passing out several times. The moment she saw him, Mom immediately regained her strength and lunged at him.She tore at him fiercely while shouting, "You monster! How could you do this to your own brother? I raised you with the best of everything—what have you ever lacked all these years? You actually threw away every shred of humanity just for money!"Having just walked through the door only to be slapped square in the face, Lance stumbled back a few steps, clutching his cheek. From the time Lance was a child, Mom had never so much as laid a finger on him, much less slapped him.He hadn't even had time to process what was happening. He just stared at Mom with wide, incredulous eyes.Esther, who had come with him, rushed forward anxiously to check his injury, her heart aching."Mrs. Howell, what's gotten into you? As time passed, Mom experienced a rare stretch of lucidity. That day, she eagerly set out to buy groceries and cook a meal for Lance and Esther, only to realize halfway there that she had forgotten her keys. When she hurried back to retrieve them, she heard an unfamiliar man's voice coming from inside the house."Is your mom really okay? All this craziness doesn't seem right. Maybe you should take her to the hospital to get checked out?"Lance let out a cold laugh. "Why waste the money? It'd be even better if the old hag just died. I'd be rid of a huge burden. She doesn't have any money left anyway. The moment she's dead, I'll marry Esther right away."The man sounded surprised. "That fast? I wouldn't have guessed you actually like her that much."Lance blew out a puff of smoke and waved his hand impatiently."Are you stupid? Who would ever like an idiot like that? If it weren't for her family having a bit of money that can let me live a life of comfort and ease, I wouldn't even

Mom's condition deteriorated steadily, to the point where she only had brief moments of lucidity.Every day, she sat at home holding my photo in her arms, silent and withdrawn. Her workplace also advised her to rest at home due to her special condition. On the surface, it seemed like they were considering her well-being, but the truth was they feared that the incident that had led to my death would affect the unit's reputation. As a result, the family had completely lost its only source of income.Lance had always been reckless with money, so within just a few days, he had burned through all their savings.Staring at the dwindling numbers in the bank account, he called Esther. When Esther rushed over, Mom was still sitting on the couch in a daze."Mrs. Howell, what's happened to you? You can't bring back the dead—life still has to go on. Just look at Lance—he's grown so thin under your care."It was only upon hearing her voice that Mom laboriously turned to look at Lance."La

It was already the middle of the night when Mom returned home, acting as if nothing had happened.Lance was lying on the couch playing on his phone. When he saw Mom come back, he hurriedly jumped down and asked about me."Mom, did something really happen to Brett? How could this be?"Mom casually tossed her bag onto a chair and waved her hand dismissively."Brett was killed instantly on the day of the accident. It's his own fault for being so careless. It's just a shame we've lost someone who brought in money for us. There's no telling how much our quality of life is going to drop from now on."Once again, Mom showed me a new rock bottom when it came to human decency.I had originally thought my death would at least stir something in her, that she might even say a few words for me.But she didn't.She simply went on fussing over the things in her hands.Even Lance, who had always been cold and indifferent, was somewhat shocked by Mom's attitude."What are we going to do?"Mo

As a woman possessed, Mom stumbled and staggered down the bitterly cold corridor of the funeral home. The staff chased after her breathlessly and only managed to pull her back after great effort."You can't do this! We understand the pain of losing your son, but life must go on!"Mom, like a crazed lioness, broke free from their grasps."What do you people know? I'm going to personally expose his lies! A psychic once told me Brett was destined to live a long life—there's no way he could die just like that. This has got to be another one of his tricks!"She might have spoken boldly, but the deathly pallor of her face still betrayed the panic she was feeling.I died because of a car accident and delayed medical treatment.
