LOGINI knew mixing in with the elite was too good to be true. Was ready to give my heart to a man who was cold once moment, then hot and steamy the next. Turned out, I was right to have been weary as I was just a game for them. A shared secret. A punchline to the elite's amusement. Well, to all but one person. They planned to humiliate me on my wedding day, but with Dominic's help, we will ruin their ending and create our own. This time, I am choosing the other twin.
View MoreStaring at the two pink lines on the little test, my heart stops beating for a moment. I never thought that after three years of being a kept woman - a stay-at-home-girlfriend for Liam Knightsbridge - I would end up with our child growing inside me.
The signs were there. The fatigue, the aversion to smell. Hell, I even missed not one, but two periods, but I thought it was because of the stress from tiptoeing around Liam and his many mood swings. For the five weeks he has been distant, snapping at me if I place a coffee mug on his desk too loudly one moment, then passionately making love to me the next. It was like my boyfriend of three years was a completely different person. A Doctor Jekyll and Mister Hyde situation.
“Miss Aurora, is everything okay in there?” The housekeeper, Helena, calls out, knocking gently on the bathroom door.
“Uh, yeah, just fine.” I answer, my voice wavering for a moment. God, even I don’t sound too convincing.
“I see. Well, Master Liam says he will be at the club tonight and not to wait for him.” Helena states. The Club. Of course, Liam would be there.
Starsign Nightclub, also known as The Club, was Liam’s favourite place to frequent. It was a club owned by his childhood friend and my old college roommate, Sheryl Crow. At first, I had joined him and his friends, wanting to be the perfect girlfriend who never strayed from his side, but I soon realized the constant drinking and loud music were not my scene.
Slowly, I convinced Liam to leave me at home where I can help take care of his large estate and allow him some downtime with friends. I knew he would be okay with this as he seemed to enjoy himself more when I was not around, and so Liam readily agreed to this suggestion, promising only to go once a month so that we could spend as much time as possible. But once a month soon became twice a month, then four times a month. For over a year now, Liam has been at The Club almost every night of the week, while I was left wondering if he was sleeping with another woman there.
Hell, it didn't help that he was returning home late at night and either ignored me, as if I were trash beneath his feet, or showered me with affection, which should be considered normal for someone who is supposedly the love of his life.
“Should I tell him?” I muse to myself, looking at the pregnancy test and sighing. Suddenly, my phone rings, an upbeat pop song reaching my ears. I jump, reaching for the device and finding Sheryl calling me.
“Hello?” I answer, trying to sound calm while I clutch the positive pregnancy test in my left hand.
“Aurora, why didn’t you come to the club tonight? We are celebrating our fifth anniversary since our opening!” Sheryl replies instantly, her voice sounding slurred. It seems she has been drinking the night away.
“Sorry, Sheryl, but I got busy with some projects.” I apologize, finding the lie flowing smoothly from my lips. I never trusted Sheryl, never liked the woman who was my college roommate. I heard the rumors that surrounded her. How she targeted women with harsh pranks and cruel false friendships. Hell, the reason why I was careful with Liam is because I have a feeling our dating was just a form of entertainment for Sheryl. I had been on edge, waiting to see when the shoe would drop and Liam would break up with me again like he did my final year of college, just before my final exams.
“Aw, booo! You should have came!” She protests, her words ending with a giggle.
“I know, maybe next time.” I suggest keeping my voice apologetic but light.
“Okay, it’s a deal.” Sheryl agrees before hanging up the call. Closing my eyes, I take a deep breath and lean my head against the wall. Maybe I should go to the club and find Liam. Let him know that I was pregnant with our child, and see what kind of reaction I would get. Either way, whether Liam accepted that I was pregnant with his child or not wouldn’t matter, as I have a nice little nest egg squirreled away.
Climbing to my feet, I head to my room and find the little black dress covered with silver glitter in my closet, dressing quickly and throwing my long, curly black hair into a messy bun on top of my head. With some wedged heels and touching up my make-up, I give myself a once-over in the mirror and smile. I look perfect for Starsign Nightclub.
“Helen, I am going out!” I call out as I climb down the pregnancy test tucked into my little purse.
“Okay, Miss Aurora, be safe, as there is a storm coming.” Helen calls back. After reassuring her I was taking my car, I headed into the garage and climbed into my Hyundai Kona, the one car that sticks out like a sore thumb beside the three luxury vehicles Liam owns.
Three days. That’s how long I have been locked out of the family accounts since that disaster of a wedding. Sheryl and I became pariahs in the circle of elites, our friends quickly discarding us in fear of ruining their reputations. I have been confined to the mansion Aurora and I shared, my father refusing to let me set foot inside the Knightsbridge companies, stating the stock have declined rapidly with the livestream we had going at the wedding. He was working on damage control. Calling every contact and claiming favours owed to him.I was lucky that I had a separate account where I funneled my paychecks into. It was Aurora’s idea the first month we moved in together. She stated that if I kept my money separate, my family would not have control of it. I thought it was stupid, a way for her to take my things. Sheryl had even said I would be a fool to listen to Aurora and create a separate account only for her to have access to it. Ironically, I brought this idea up to my brother, th
Staring at the pile of art supplies leaning against the wall, I close my eyes and fall backwards, my head hitting the mountain of pillows behind me. My date with Dominic had ended an hour ago after another round of beavertail and talking about everything and nothing and avoiding the one topic Dominic knows I am not ready for – the baby.I don’t know who told him or how he found out about the life we created growing inside me, but part of me feels relieved. It saves me from having to explain it to him.“Okay.” Mira’s no-nonsense voice comes from the door, catching my attention. I look in her direction, catching her leaning against the frame.“You came home from the date and came straight here. What happened, and don’t give me some bullshit lie.” She saunters to my bed, falling in beside me and wrapping her arms around me. I sigh, resting my head against her shoulder and take a deep breath.“He knows about the baby.” I state before delving into our short conversation about me being preg
“Did he actually say it’s a date?” Mira asks as I pull on a pair of boots.“Yes. He said he gets off work at five and to be ready for our first date.” I confirm, a smile on my lips as I make sure I have everything I need in my purse.“Like, an actual first date?” She continues asking in disbelief, her eyes wide while she watches me finish getting ready.“Yes, an actual first date.” I once again confirm, reaching for my cup of cinnamon-chamomile tea and finishing the last little bit, the silver bracelet Dominic gave me reflecting the light. Mira shakes her head, a surprised smile on her face.“I can’t believe he actually is taking you on a date!” Mira says, flopping onto the sofa dramatically and sighing.“I mean, Liam never took you out after moving in with him, yet Dominic is slowly worming his way into your life, starting with helping you escape Liam and Sheryl, and now taking you on a date.” She continues. I pause the hand holding my lipstick halfway to my lips and grin, thinking a
Looking at the painting on the wall, I take a deep breath and breathe in the smell of the art gallery. Today was my interview for the management position at the local gallery, a decent-sized building next to Lake Ontario. One wall faced the water, letting in all the natural light and a beautiful view of the water itself. The spacious gallery held many paintings from Canadian artists, my favourite being the wall dedicated to indigenous artists here in Canada, where dozens of indigenous paintings were hung.“Sorry I am late.” A strong, feminine voice calls, and I turn to find a woman dressed in a black, knee-length sundress with a dusty rose blazer over top walking towards me, her heels, the same dusty rose as the blazer, clicking on the polished floor.“It’s no problem at all. I was looking at all the beautiful artworks.” I reassure quickly, stepping forward and shaking the offered hand.“They are beautiful, aren’t they?” The woman says, her eyes softening as she looks at the painting
Looking out at the streets of Toronto, my mind wanders to Aurora and what she might be doing. Letting her go live with Mira, knowing she is pregnant with my child, had been the most difficult decision I have ever had to make. But Aurora needed this; she needed to get her freedom back after the way
Looking around Mira’s small two-bedroom bungalow, I take in the chaotic scattering of house plants on any viable surface, the canvases stacked by the large bay window with an easel holding onto a half-finished project, and the basket of painting supplies beside it.“It’s…” I trail off, shaking my h
The jet lands in Toronto Pearson Airport around two in the afternoon. By now, I can already feel the jet lag from the shift with the different time zone, and a nice soft bed seems to be calling me. Dominic had taken it upon himself to gather my luggage, much to my chagrin, as I was planning to snea
Staring at the new cellphone I had bought only yesterday, I watch as Sheryl’s live stream begins while reclining back on the soft cushion of the private jet, sipping on the cold glass of Coca-Cola.“Good morning, ladies and gentlemen.” She calls with that practice smile as she looks into the screen
