CHAPTER 8: Fallout

Thirty seconds passed before I finally reacted, my eyes scanning the crowded room as if searching for an exit that didn’t exist. It was only my second day at school, and the last thing I needed was to be branded as a delusional she-wolf before I’d even learned anyone’s name.

Then a flash of red light swept over me; bright, accusatory, inescapable!

My chest clenched. The air left my lungs all at once.

“What a lying bitch!” someone scoffed.

“So,” Muriel said, tilting her head with a slow, savoring smile, “you really do like my mate!”

“No! I didn’t say anything!” I shot back; my skin prickled with humiliation.

“Oh, that’s the thing,” one of the girls chimed in, almost sweetly. “Silence counts as a lie, too. So really, your best option is just to tell the truth!”

“I didn’t come here for this!”

But they ignored me.

“This is fun!” Instead, Muriel called Soren over, a teasing smile on her lips. “Babe, give Gwen another question.”

The room’s noise collapsed into a single, breathless quiet. Every face turned toward him, lit up with the kind of excitement that only comes at someone else’s expense.

“Is it true you don’t know where your mother is,” he said, “or are you just using her disappearance to get closer to me? To make me feel sorry for you?”

My whole body went rigid.

How could he turn my mother into something for everyone to laugh at? He knew the truth, or at least, I thought he did.

But maybe I was wrong, because in that moment, I saw exactly how he saw me, just someone desperate for sympathy.

Tears burned at the edges of my eyes. Around me, laughter bloomed. Soren hesitated, as if realizing he’d gone too far.

“Forget it,” he said, waving a hand. “I was just joking!”

‘Joking?’

While I stood there, completely humiliated?

I hadn’t spoken a word, but the light flared red again, because apparently even falling silent while you tried not to cry counted as a lie here.

“Walk! Walk! Walk!” the crowd chanted in unison.

Panic surged through me as I tried to run, but an invisible force yanked me back and hurled me into the center of Luminous Isle, sending my already fragile senses spinning.

“We told you, didn’t we?” Muriel’s voice drifted over the ringing in my head, her smirk audible even before I looked up and saw it. “No one escapes once they’ve lied, Gwen.”

“The only way out,” the woman said, “is to finish the walk of shame.”

“Just get it over with.” Soren’s voice was flat, almost bored. “It’s only a walk.”

It was clear I had no choice. I forced myself forward, holding back my tears with everything I had. It was only my second day, yet Soren had already broken something inside me, not just my love for him, but the friendship and trust I once gave so freely.

I never imagined that walking down that aisle, surrounded by a sea of people, would feel like stepping on blades. Their laughter, their whispers, their eyes, each one pierced through me like thorns, catching and tearing my skin with every step.

I wasn’t just humiliated, I was breaking in ways no one could see.

‘Moon Goddess… after everything I’ve given you, why is this happening to me? I’ve always believed, I’ve always prayed. How could you watch this and do nothing?’

By the time I reached the end, I felt drained, like I had been stripped of everything I was. Soren stood there watching, his throat moving as he swallowed hard, but he didn’t stop it. He didn’t even try.

Maybe because watching me break fed his ego.

Then suddenly, alarms echoed across Luminous. The lights shifted, turning a deep, unsettling red.

“What is the meaning of this?! This area is restricted, no students are permitted here today!” a voice thundered, it sounded like the Academy’s Chancellor.

“Arrest all the wolves who violated the rules! This is unacceptable!” another voice barked.

I was still within the university grounds, where magic was suspended, wolf abilities sealed off entirely. Whatever wounds I was carrying, I would have to carry them a little longer. I couldn’t heal. I couldn’t even feel my own instincts clearly anymore.

My mind blurred, and my heart burned out.

The world tilted, and my knees finally gave way as I collapsed onto the polished floor.

Before my head could hit the ground, someone caught me.

An arm found my waist before I could strike the ground, and I was gathered upward. I should have registered nothing in that state, but something registered anyway…

A sudden warmth spread through my chest, not painful, but gentle and comforting.

My wolf stirred, restless and insistent, urging me to stay close to the one holding me. For the first time in what felt like forever, I didn’t feel fear.

I felt safe… protected.

He felt it, too, as his arms loosened; he was pulling away. I instinctively tightened my grip on his shirt.

Slowly, I forced my eyes open and met his green gaze. Deep down, I knew… I had finally found him, on the very day I almost stopped believing in the Moon Goddess.

“My mate,” I breathed, before the darkness took me.

[Kira]One evening, a few days after my birthday, I was surprised when someone came to the manor looking for me.“Lady Kira, Diana is waiting outside. She says she’d like to speak with you,” my personal servant informed me.“Please escort her to the garden,” I said.I zipped up the travel bag I was bringing to Thornfell. Everything I needed for the journey had already been packed.Even so, I couldn’t help wondering what Diana wanted from me. I left my room and headed toward the garden, the very same place where I had learned the truth about Zev’s nature, his infidelity.I spotted her almost immediately. The moment our eyes met, she slowly rose to her feet.“What do you need from me?” I asked, stopping a few paces away. She didn’t bother exchanging greetings. “Zev and I slept t

The two servants immediately dropped to their knees, trembling.“LadyGwyneth, please forgive us! We spoke without thinking!”The Queen’s expression hardened. “Guards!” Within seconds, the guards outside burst through the doors. “Take them away! They will be punished for their reckless tongues!” she commanded coldly.Ignoring the servants’ desperate cries, they seized both women and dragged them from the room.“My Queen! Please!”Their screams faded farther down the corridor until silence settled over the chamber once more.An inexplicable chill crept beneath my skin.“To be clear,” the priestess continued, “the presence I sensed wasn’t Virel’s blood or essence within the pups.”She hesita

[Gwyneth] Pups... babies... It had only been a month since I regained consciousness in this place, yet I already had countless questions that no one could answer. Everything felt like a puzzle with missing pieces; my identity, my past… The door to the room opened, and my mother stepped inside. She found me standing by the tall arched window, gazing over the palace grounds. “I was told by the servants that you skipped lunch, so I brought you something to eat.” I forced a faint smile. “My Queen Mother, this pregnancy has left me with little appetite. Forgive me for causing you concern.” She set the tray aside before taking my hands into hers. “A Lycan pregnancy has never been an easy burden to bear.” Her gaze drifted to my swollen belly, and a mixture of wonder and concern softened her features. “Since our pups develop much faster than human babies, it will take a couple of months before they’re born. It’s been a very long time since a female Lycan has carried twins,” she expl

[Lucian] “She’s dead!” my father declared, his voice echoing through the room. “Hasn’t more than a month of her disappearance been enough for you to face reality? You’re to marry Alpha Conrad’s second daughter, whoever she may be. There’s no difference!” “How can you say that, Derrick?” the Luna snapped. She had already gotten to know Gwen during the betrothal period, and I knew she had grown fond of my wife, not just as a political obligation, but as a person. “I’m just trying to make sense of all this!” my father replied, his gaze hardening as it landed on me. “And you, of all the wolves, know what happened that day. You were the last one with Gwen before she vanished.” “But it’s different because I love Gwen!” I shot back. “I didn’t just marry one of Alpha Conrad’s daughters to seal a treaty. I married the woman I cherish!” The woman I loved... and the woman I failed to protect. The thought tore through my chest. “I’m still fucking grieving,” I said, my voice breaking despit

The king frowned. “And what does bringing her here mean for our territory?” The queen met his gaze without flinching. “She can heal me, Leon!” the queen cried, her voice sharp as breaking glass. “After everything you put me through, our daughter is the only one who can mend what’s left of me.” “You said we should let go of the past!” he retorted, desperation creeping into his voice. “Why? Because facing the truth is inconvenient for you? Finding our daughter doesn’t erase the betrayal, the pain, or the years I lost! Some wounds don’t fade, even for us lycans.” Silence settled between them before the queen finally steadied herself. “Gwyneth is carrying pups,” she said more calmly. “Those children will continue my bloodline and strengthen the future of this territory. I no longer care about the secrets buried in her past. What matters now is that no one discovers where she is! You will help me keep her hidden and protect her at all costs.” *** [Kira] “What? The queen was summoned to the Lycan King’s hall after word of the events at Asterra Lake, and several other startling revelations reached him.The moment she stepped out of Gwen’s chamber, she made her way to the hall. The king was seated in the same chair he always occupied when the queen entered, as though he had been expecting her. The coldness between them remained unchanged, an invisible wall built over years of pain and resentment. It wasn’t something new; it had become a permanent part of their marriage, lingering between them for nineteen long years.“I’ve been told the girl you found is the daughter you’ve searched for all these years.”Leora kept her expression composed, though her lycan stirred uneasily beneath her skin.“She is.”His gaze sharpened.“And you are certain? Muriel’s smile was all warmth on the surface, but my thoughts were anything but calm. “I accept the marriage alliance with the Blackwood Pack…” The words felt heavy the moment they left my lips. I didn’t even need the time my father had given me to prove my mate bond with Soren. That alone was embarrassing enough, but what made it worse was how he didn’t question me at all, as if

My mind is a mess. I pushed myself to get into Lycan Academy because, just as Rumi said, it was part of my agreement with Soren.
