Chapter 4

“I see. Thank you, Alpha Kane,” I said and put down the phone.

That was the fourth Alpha who had cancelled business dealings with us in the last week.

All of the social standing I had worked to build among the Alphas and Lunas had disappeared overnight.

It was not anything new for Alphas to have mistresses and illegitimate children here and there.

But this was incest.

No one wanted to be associated with an Alpha who did not honour his family.

“Joan,” I yelled, leaning back in my seat.

There was no response for a few seconds, then the door cracked open slowly. A maid I had never seen before entered my office.

“Who are you?”

“U-Um. Pamella. I was told to wait on you from today.”

“Where is Joan?”

“She was moved to another station.”

My eyes narrowed. “Who the hell is rotating my maids without my permission?”

“M-Miss Lillian. She was the one who moved us.”

A new wave of irritation flared up inside of me. Even Asher would not touch my maids without asking me.

But I was not crazy enough to attempt to confront Lilliana.

The last few days had proved that she had more sway over Asher’s judgment than I ever did.

“You may go,” I said, standing to go make my sandwich myself.

Turns out that it was not just my maids but the whole house. ‘Miss Lillian’ had changed our entire rotation.

“Who did that bitch think she was?” I muttered to myself, stomping to the kitchen.

“Someone looks mighty upset.”

My hand paused on its way to the fridge and I turned.

I should have known something was up when the kitchen was quiet at one in the afternoon.

She was reclined on a seat I was sure was not in the kitchen this morning, sipping juice out of my wine glass.

I wanted to jump forward and rip my claws into her face.

“Good to see you, Lillian,” I said and returned to my rummaging through the fridge.

“You have far more self-control than I thought,” she remarked, dropping the sweet girl act she was pulling in front of everyone.

“What did you want me to do? Beat you up?” I leaned back from the fridge to look her in the eyes. “Some of us still have class.”

Her eyes were hard and angry.

She slammed the glass hard enough on the counter for it to crack. “You talk big for a barren woman.”

“I would rather be barren than sleep with my brother-in-law.”

Lilliana snorted. “Aww. Is the orphan mad that her husband found someone better? Don’t worry. I will put in a good word for you so he does not completely abandon you.”

“Think, Lily. Why do you think Asher has not sent me away yet?”

Her mouth snapped shut as her brows furrowed in thought.

Yes.

“He needs a Luna. Someone to rule the pack beside him. If that–” I glanced down at her belly. “–was enough to make you Luna, he would have done it on the Full Moon Festival.”

I had finally gotten the last word.

Before I could blink, she darted forward, grabbed a knife from the pile, and sliced her arm from elbow to palm.

My eyes widened in horror as I snatched the knife from her. “Are you crazy?”

She pushed me away from her and fell on the ground, screaming. “Elara. Leave me alone.”

It took a total of four seconds for me to realize what she was, but by then, it was too late.

Her guards were already in the room, their claws extended as if looking for a fight.

As if the situation could not get any worse, Asher entered the room.

His smile vanished as he assessed the situation. Silently, he walked to Lilliana and held her wounded arm gently.

“Wait a minute.” I dropped the knife from my arm, reaching for Asher. “I did not–”

I fell to the ground before I felt the stinging on my cheek.

My hand lifted slowly to my cheek, my entire body frozen in shock.

Did Asher just slap me?

“I did not hurt her,” I whispered, my voice cracked.

He lifted Lillian into his arms easily. “That is enough out of you. Mason, lock her in the dungeon.”

Mason, his beta, took a step back. “Alpha, she is our Luna. I cannot–”

“Cannot what? You want to be locked up with her?” Asher said, his wolf slipping out. The atmosphere in the room filled thick with his Alpha energy.

Mason bared his neck in submission.

Asher gave me one final look, his jaw ticking in anger as he saw me still staring at him.

I had never felt the urge to submit to him, but today, I lowered my head. Just so he would get out of my face.

He clicked his tongue and stormed out. “Insolent bitch.”

“Luna, Alpha said–”

“I heard him,” I replied to Mason and got up, letting him lead me to the dungeons.

The journey across pack lands was the hardest.

From the way the guards were positioned around to the grim silence as we walked, it was enough to spark the people talking.

“I will escort Luna inside alone,” he said to the guards and led me in, closing the heavy doors behind him.

He led me to the last cell before speaking.

“Luna, do you think the pack can come back from this?”

I chuckled. “He just allowed me to be led to the dungeons like a criminal. Even if I were let out in an hour, I would never come back from it.”

Once a pack loses its respect for its Alpha and Luna, the pack is as good as dead.

“Do you think you could ever forgive the Alpha?” he asked quietly.

“After the stunt he pulled today. Fat chance.”

“I see. I will bring your dinner myself,” he said and walked away.

The moment the doors shut behind him, I let out a sigh, my decision suddenly feeling easier.

I slipped out my hairpins, letting my hair tumble down my back. The lock was rusted enough to work.

I was no longer needed in this pack.

Lenora did not care, continuing to scold him in baby gibberish.Richard, the other boy was asleep on the couch, letting out little snores. Yes, asleep as were singing the happy birthday song for him.He could never stay awake for longer than he needs to.“Blow out your candles,” Rosalyn said, showing them the motion they needed to do. Ronan got to his feet and jumped on Leo instead, crying Papa.Lenora blew out the candles by herself before putting her hand inside the cake and carrying it to her mouth.Leo was beside me on the ground, weeping into my leg. “They are so grown now, walking and everything. I cannot believe they are one already.”I spotted his head, trying to catch some sleep. Lucas k

Elara’s POV“If you can stay over for the night, find a room and make yourself comfortable,” I said. “We will continue the hearing of the council tomorrow.”Someone raised their hands. “For those of us who cannot stay…I really want to hear till the end.”“Official correspondence will be delivered to every Alpha in the country, stating everyone that has been mentioned and will be mentioned.”“This is less of a hearing and more of a gist session,” Cain said to me as we walked deeper into the council building. It was a massive structure on way too much land. When they were gone, I would have to repurpose it and have an academy here instead. The least they could do after all they had done was to contribute to the lives of the next generation with their substance.“If they had not been so stupid earlier, I would not have thought of handling it this radically.”How dare they look me in the eyes and tell me to be their slave?“Sis, in all of these there is one matter that you have failed to

Elara’s POVKaden and I were chatting when the room started to fill with Alphas from all over the country who had dropped everything to be here.On the summon of the Elder Council, signed and stamped by Altman under Kaden’s very gentle compulsion. When they arrived and met us sitting on the table where the Elder Council should have been, a wave of murmurs swept through the crowd. But no one came forward to ask yet and neither did we give them any remarks until the room was as full as it needed to be.Cain walked in a while later. When he saw us, he threw his head back and groaned. “I just knew it was the two of you up to something again.”I jumped down from the table to go hug my brother. When was the last time I saw him?Since he moved back to start rebuilding Moon flame, he had been coming to visit less and less.“I missed you,” I muttered against his chest, my grip tightening around his body.Cain ran his fingers through my hair, his lips pressing to my forehead. “Sorry, everything

Elara’s POVTo my utmost surprise, the council brought the fight to us.Kaden laid in bed with me on his body as he read through the letter. Harry stood to the side, looking like this was the last place he would rather be.“So what do they expect from us?” Kaden asked, tossing the letter to the side.Harry’s face was a mix of discomfort and annoyance. “They want us to come for a roundtable negotiation so that Caelthorn and the Elder Council can reach a peaceful agreement.”“Inform that I have nothing to agree with them about and if they like, they can bring an army to our borders.”Kaden spoke about war so casually that it should have frightened me. I looked up at his face.He had gotten the piercings that I had happened to mention one time. “You’re so hot,” I whispered, pressing my lips to his.Kaden could not hide his smirk, his hands slipping underneath the bedsheet to cup my ass. “You think so?”A few words from me and he was already stiffening beneath me. Elara's POV“Councilman,” Kaden hissed as we arrived at the border. He was carrying me on his back.I gave Donatello a nod, my head flopping back as I tried to fall back asleep. It was barely dawn and after all night of sex, Kaden had finally let me sleep.Only for us to be woken up that Donatello was at the border.“Is there a reason that this could not wait until a more godly hour of the day?” Kaden asked, his voice tight.Donatello looked at me on Kaden's back. “Is that any way to talk to a member of the Elder Council?”“The only reason I brought my mate out of bed is because you are who you say you are.” Donatello was already fuming then Kaden added. “Do not push your luck.”However, because the three of us were not alone, accompanied by warriors on both sides, Donatello could not lose his cool and embarrass himself.“What a show of disrespect,” Donatello scolded, waiting for an apology. When it did not come, his jaw tightened. “However, I did come for a more important reason.”“W

Elara's POV“This is your grand plan?” Kaden hissed behind the thicket of bushes we hid behind.I sent him a glare. “Do you have a better idea?”Kaden gestured to his dozens of warriors lying in wait behind us, waiting for his signal. If I gave the word, they would storm Dominic’s place and the Elder Council and have them dismantled before the sun was up.A hundred meters away, there was a rustle in the trees before Donatello came into view.“Sera,” he whispered.I half-expected him not to heed the note I sent him.I cleared my throat, hoping I sounded a bit more like Seraphina. “Don, I have missed you so much.”Donatello did not notice the difference in our voices as he whirled around, searching for me where I was speaking.“What is wrong, love? Why are you hiding?” His voice was frantic. “I never got back your word after the Blood Moon. I saw Elara a few days ago. She looked fine.”“The ritual went haywire,” I said. “I am on the run at the moment because Caelthorn has its warriors l
