Chapter 15

Shadows Return

Judith woke to the sound of soft crying.

She sat up quickly, heart hammering, and crossed the small bedroom in three strides. Lily was curled on her side in the narrow bed, face buried in the pillow that still smelled faintly of Erica’s lavender detergent. The girl’s small shoulders shook.

“Lily?” Judith whispered, kneeling beside her. She reached out but stopped short of touching her, remembering how the child had flinched the night before. The sting of that rejection lingered like a fresh bruise on her heart.

“I want Mummy Erica,” Lily sobbed into the fabric. “She makes the bad dreams go away. She sings me the special song and holds me tight until the monsters leave.”

Judith’s throat tightened. “I’m here now, baby. I’ll keep the bad dreams away. I can learn the song too. Just give me time—we’ll make new memories together.”

Lily didn’t answer. She simply cried harder, the sound muffled but heartbreaking. Judith stayed on her knees until the sobs quieted into hiccups, then exhausted sleep. Only then did she allow herself to brush a damp curl from her daughter’s forehead, her own eyes burning with unshed tears.

In the living room, Mrs. Thompson—now settled in the better hospital bed Dan had arranged—was awake when Judith called. The older woman’s voice was still weak but steadier, a quiet anchor in the storm.

“How is she?” Mrs. Thompson asked.

“Still asking for her,” Judith admitted, rubbing her eyes. “Every hour it feels like another piece of her slips away. I don’t know how to fix this, Mum. It’s tearing me apart.”

“You can’t rush it. That woman spent months poisoning her mind. It won’t disappear overnight. But your love is real. It will win in the end.”

Judith nodded even though her mother couldn’t see. “The doctor said you can come home in a few days. Dan’s helping with the paperwork and coordinating the home care nurse.”

A long pause. “Judith… be careful. Erica isn’t finished. I saw the hatred in her eyes.”

“I know. I feel it watching us even now.”

At the police station, Erica paced the small holding cell like a caged animal. The night had stripped away her polished mask. Her hair was tangled, mascara smudged, and her designer blouse wrinkled. When the door finally opened, she rushed forward.

Richard Blackwood stood in the corridor, immaculate in a charcoal suit despite the early hour. His expression was unreadable.

“Mr. Blackwood,” Erica breathed, relief flooding her voice. “Thank God. They’re trying to pin this on me. The old woman is lying—she’s senile, confused—”

Blackwood raised a hand, silencing her. His eyes flicked to the officer behind him.

“Release her,” he said quietly. “Bail has been arranged.”

The officer hesitated. “Sir, the charges—”

“Will be dropped,” Blackwood finished, voice smooth as silk. “Or handled. You know who I am.”

A few signatures, a few quiet words in the right ears, and Erica was free. She followed Blackwood out into the gray morning light, clutching her purse like a shield, already plotting her return.

In the back of his black luxury sedan, she finally broke.

“They believed her over me,” she hissed. “After everything I did for that child. For that family. I became everything they needed.”

Blackwood poured her a measure of whiskey from a small bar compartment. “Drink. Then tell me exactly what happened.”

Erica downed the glass in one swallow. “The old woman kept interfering. Asking questions. Watching me. I just… I pushed her. Not hard. She fell. That’s all.”

Blackwood studied her for a long moment. “Sloppy.”

“I was tired,” Erica snapped. “You promised me this would be clean. You said Judith would stay away.”

“I said I would handle Judith,” he corrected. “You were supposed to maintain control of the child and the mother. Instead you created evidence.”

Erica’s hands trembled. “What now?”

Blackwood leaned back, gazing out at the passing city streets. “Now we remind Judith why she should have stayed gone”.

Back at the apartment, Dan arrived with groceries and a quiet determination. He moved around the kitchen making breakfast while Judith tried to convince Lily into eating.

The little girl sat at the table, pushing cereal around with her spoon, eyes red-rimmed.

“Mummy Erica always cut the bananas in smiley faces,” she muttered.

Dan glanced at Judith but said nothing. He simply slid a plate of scrambled eggs toward Lily with a gentle smile. “How about we try stars today?”

Lily looked up at him warily, but after a moment, she nodded.

Judith felt a small crack in the ice around her heart. Dan had been a steady presence through the chaos—reliable, kind, and careful not to push. She caught his eye and said hank you, a flicker of warmth amid the fear.

Later, while Lily napped, Judith stepped onto the small balcony for air. Dan joined her.

“You don’t have to stay,” she said quietly. “This isn’t your mess.”

“I know.” He leaned on the railing beside her. “But I’m choosing to. For Lily. For you. We’ll face whatever comes together.”

Before Judith could respond, a movement below caught her eye. The black luxury car sat parked across the street, half-hidden beneath the shade of an old oak tree. Tinted windows. Engine off. It hadn’t been there earlier.

She froze.

“Dan.”

He followed her gaze. His posture changed instantly—shoulders squared, alert.

“Inside,” he said calmly. “Now.”

They stepped back into the apartment and locked the balcony door. Judith’s pulse thundered in her ears.

“Do you think it’s him?” she whispered. “Blackwood?”

Dan checked the front door chain. “Could be. Or one of his people. We need to be smart. No more confrontations until we have real protection.”

From the bedroom, Lily’s sleepy voice called out, “Mummy?”

Judith went to her, forcing a smile she didn’t feel. She gathered her daughter close, ignoring the way Lily stiffened at first.

“I’m here,” Judith murmured into her hair. “I’m not leaving again.”

But as she held her child, Judith couldn’t shake the feeling of eyes on the building. Outside, the black car remained.

Inside the sedan, Erica sat in the passenger seat, staring up at the apartment windows. Blackwood’s driver waited silently.

“She thinks it’s over,” Erica whispered, a dangerous smile returning to her lips. “She has no idea.”

Blackwood didn’t smile. He simply watched the building with cold calculation.

“Patience,” he said. “We break them slowly. Starting with the child.”

The engine purred to life as the car finally pulled away.. And then, Ethan…….

Nothing about the outside told you what happened inside.Ethan’s lawyer was waiting on the pavement when they pulled up. His name was George Farrell. She will be respectful but she will not leave gaps in her questions so do not leave gaps in your answers.” He looked at Judith directly. “Say what happened. In the order it happened.
