AURORA

I left Arya with Mrs. Bayer and Maria.

It was the first time I'd left her with anyone other than Lydia, and my hands were shaking as I strapped her into the car seat. I already kissed her five times. Maybe six. Maria was watching me with an amused smile.

"Go," she said. "She'll be fine. We've got this."

I looked at her one more time, strapped in, chewing on her teething ring. She was growing so fast I could barely keep up.

She looked back at me with her big dark eyes, like she was wond

AURORAI placed a hand on Arya's head and sighed.I climbed down the bed and went to get the thermometer. I checked her temperature twice, watching the numbers, waiting for them to spike. But thankfully they didn't. But she was fussy, and her little face was flushed."Mommy," she whined, tugging at my shirt. "Stay."I looked at the clock. I had two hours before the graduation."I can't stay, baby," I said, smoothing her hair back. "Today is Mommy's big day. Remember? I'm going to get my diploma. You wanted me to go."She shook her head, her lower lip jutting out. "No.""Aunty Lydia's going to stay with you. You're going to watch cartoons and eat toast and take your medicine."She buried her face in my chest. I held her for a moment, feeling th

AURORA "I can give you a ride."I turned around, sighing in exasperation. "I can just take a taxi. I don't want to put you out."He shook his head, chuckling lightly. "You're not.""The tow truck guy will be here in an hour. We can wait—""Arya is cold." He said it gently, like he was pointing out something I already knew but was ignoring. "And it's getting dark. Come on, let me take you home."I looked at Arya in the back seat of my car. Her face was pressed against the window, her breath fogging up the glass as she tried to see what was going on outside. I was never this curious when I was a kid.I sighed. "Thank you."I opened the door and helped Arya out of the booster seat. She was heavy and tired and her small body was cold against my chest. I carried her toward his car, trying to get the door open with my free hand.Caleb stepped forward and opened it for me. I climbed in and settled Arya on my lap, her head resting against my shoulder. He closed the door and got in on his sid

3 YEARS LATERAURORA "Listen, I understand the timeline is tight. If you can send me those documents by tomorrow morning, I'll have them reviewed before noon." I held the phone between my shoulder and ear, my fingers flying across the keyboard. "The precedents we discussed are solid. I just need to cross-reference a few things.""Of course. I'll have them to you by eight.""Perfect. Thank you ."I ended the call and set the phone down on the desk, rubbing my temples with both hands. The client on the other end has been nice enough, but the case was complicated and the deadlines were tight and I could already feel the familiar tension building in my shoulders. I leaned back in my chair and stared at the ceiling for a moment, letting myself breathe.I've come so far since Sacramento happened to me. With nothing but a suitcase and an unborn baby, there were dreams I wasn't sure I was ever going to achieve. Last year I got a job as a legal virtual assistant for a small firm, taking on c

ELENAI woke up to the smell of bacon and coffee drifting through the apartment. For a moment I forgot where I was, my eyes blinking against the pale morning light filtering through the curtains. I could hear voices from the kitchen, Lydia's laugh and Mrs. Hart's gentle yet angry voice. I turned my head and looked at Arya. She was awake, staring up at the ceiling with this focus like something was there, her little hands waving in the air like she was conducting an invisible orchestra. I followed her gaze but there was nothing there. I smiled and reached over, my fingers brushing against her cheek."Morning, baby."She turned her head toward me and cooed.I sat up slowly, my body heavy with exhaustion. My flight was at eleven which means I had a few hours. I swung my legs over the side of the bed and stood up, the cold wooden floor making my feet tingle.I walked into the kitchen and found Mrs. Hart at the stove, a pan of bacon sizzling in front of her. Lydia was at the table, a cup

AURORAThe water soaked through my coat’s arm.I took a deep breath and walked up the path, the gravel crunching under my feet.Lydia pushed the door and stepped inside. The house was so cold and silent, the air thick with dust and webs. I wonder how Lydia was about to work around it.We bumped into Lydia's parents inside, her mother was arranging flowers on the coffee table, a mix of white and pale pink roses that must have cost a fortune. Her father was setting up a small display of photos on the mantle, my parents' faces smiling out from behind the glass frames."You called your parents," I asked in a low voice"Yep. I mean, your mom is literally her best friend. She wanted to hold it separately but the more the merrier, I thought."I lifted

AURORA I woke up to the sound of rain tapping against the window. The room was dark, the curtains drawn, the only light a thin gray line creeping through the gap. I lay there for a moment, my body heavy with sleep, and my mind slow to catch up. This was it.Today was the day.I turned my head and looked at Arya, she was asleep beside me, her tiny body curled into a ball, her hand resting on my arm. I watched her for a long moment, I reached out playing with her hair as her chest rose and fell. She looked so peaceful, so unaware of the problems around her, or the turmoil deep inside me, so completely trusting in the world around her. I gently touched her cheek, feeling the warmth of her skin beneath my fingers.I slipped out of bed and walked to the window. The rain was falling steadily, soaking the streets, and turning the world gray and muted.I wonder if Damian knew I was back. If he was even still alive. What would he do if he found out I was in Sacramento? His engagement was t
