Six years later.

They say time heals all wounds, but they’re wrong. Time just gives you the tools to sharpen your blade.

I stood at the window of my penthouse suite, watching the skyline of the city that had spat me out like trash. I wasn't that shaking girl in the oversized blazer anymore. My body was toned, my movements were calculated, and my heart was a vault of ice. I adjusted the sleeves of my custom-made blazer, the silk feeling like armor.

"Lydia... Charlie... I’m back," I whispered, my reflection in the glass looking back at me with a cold, predatory light. "I survived the gutter you threw me into. And now, I’m here to take everything that belongs to me. Starting with your dignity."

A small tug at my hand brought me back to the present.

"Mommy? Are we staying in this big castle now?"

I looked down at Leo. He was five, a brilliant, stubborn little brat who had inherited his father’s brooding brow and my mother’s gentle heart. Every time he looked at me with those dark, intense eyes, I was reminded of why I had worked three jobs in London while building my first tech firm from a kitchen table.

"For a little while, Leo," I said, smoothing his curls. "We have some business to finish."

My assistant, Sarah, walked in, her tablet glowing. "Ms. Vance, the Vane shipping empire is hemorrhaging cash. Charlie’s latest expansion failed, and the board is panicking. They’re desperate for a buyout."

"Good," I said, turning away from the window. "Sarah, you’ll be the face of this operation. To the world, you are the CEO of Vance International. I want you to offer them double the market price for the Vane family estate and the main headquarters. I want Charlie to think he’s being saved by a mystery benefactor."

Sarah nodded, a professional smile on her lips. "And when we own the deed?"

"Then I’ll show him my face," I replied. "I want to see the moment he realizes he sold his soul to the woman he called 'nothing.'"

The Airport Plaza

Later that afternoon, I took Leo to the plaza near the business district. I needed to feel the pavement beneath my feet, to breathe the air of the city as a victor. I wore oversized designer sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat, keeping my head down as Leo ran ahead toward a fountain.

"Leo, don't go too far!" I called out, laughing as he tried to jump over a puddle.

Across the street, a man in a dark suit stopped dead in his tracks.

Marcus, Charlie’s head of security and longtime friend, had been grabbing a coffee when he saw the boy. His heart nearly stopped. The kid... the kid had the exact same scowl, the same defiant stance that Charlie had in the old photos from their childhood.

He looked at the woman standing behind the boy. She was elegant, radiating wealth and power, her face partially hidden by the glasses. But there was something in the way she moved a ghost of a memory.

Marcus didn't hesitate. He pulled out his phone and snapped three quick photos of them before they disappeared into a waiting black car.

Vane Headquarters

Charlie Vane was staring at a pile of debt notices when his phone buzzed. It was a private message from Marcus.

’Boss, you need to see this. I’m at the South Plaza. I just saw a kid... dem it, Charlie, he’s a carbon copy of you at that age. And the woman he was with... there’s something familiar about her.’

Charlie clicked the attachment. The photo was a bit grainy, but the boy’s face was unmistakable. The dark curls, the set of the jaw it was like looking into a mirror across time.

"F**k," Charlie breathed, his grip tightening on the phone until his knuckles turned white.

He scrolled to the next photo. The woman. She was leaning down to talk to the boy, her profile sleek and expensive. Even with the sunglasses, the shape of her lips sent a jolt of electricity through his spine.

"Who the hell are you?" he muttered, his mind racing.

He thought of Elara. He thought of the night he threw her out in the rain, calling her a thief and a liar.

“It can't be," he whispered, slamming the phone onto the desk. "She’s gone. She’s nothing."

But as he looked back at the photo of the little boy, a cold, gnawing feeling began to grow in his chest. A feeling that the past he had buried was about to break through the floorboards and drag him under.

The penthouse was blissfully quiet. The soft, ambient light of the Manhattan skyline filtered through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, casting long, peaceful shadows across the minimalist luxury of the living room. The air was filled with the faint, comforting scent of fresh lavender and vanilla, a welcome contrast to the toxic, heavy atmosphere of the lakeside terrace they had left behind upstate.Tyler walked slowly down the carpeted hallway, carrying little Leo gently on his shoulders. The boy’s small hands were loosely wrapped around Tyler's forehead, his head lulling to the side as his eyes fought a losing battle against sleep. Tyler navigated the doorway of Leo's bedroom with practiced ease. He bent down slowly, lifting Leo from his shoulders with his massive, careful hands, and went and lay him down on the plush, cloud like mattress."Sleep tight, little champion," Tyler whispered, pulling the soft blue comforter up to the boy’s chin. He brushed a stray lock of hair from Leo

Wrapped in his soft woolen blanket, his long eyelashes casting tiny shadows on his tear stained cheeks, he slept deeply, utterly exhausted from the crying and the terrifying confrontation with the Vanes. The quiet, rhythmic sound of his soft, steady breathing filled the cabin, bringing a profound, grounding peace to the two adults in the front.Elara sat in the passenger seat, her head leaning tiredly against the window as she watched the dark waters of the Hudson River flicker under the moonlight. The emerald-green silk of her dress shimmered softly in the dim amber glow of the dashboard. For a long time,

Downstairs in his drunken, raging stupor, Charlie had completely lost his fucking mind. The humiliation of the restaurant, the burning pain of Elara’s double slap, and the cold, terrifying finality of his mother’s lockdown had pushed him past the brink of sanity. He was drowning in a toxic mix of premium scotch and raw, unchecked madness. He wasn't just a man defeated; he was a cornered animal, screaming at the empty mahogany walls of the library, throwing priceless crystal glasses into the roaring fireplace until the hearth was littered with jagged, glowing shards."Damn it! F**k all of them!" Charlie roared, his voice thick, slurred, and echoing with a pathetic, desperate fury. "I am Charlie Vane! They can't lock me in my own fucking house! They can't treat me like a criminal!"His mind was a chaotic blur of rage and alcohol. He couldn't face the reality of what was coming. The master bedroom of the Vane suite had never felt so much like a tomb. Outside the heavy, triple locked doors, the silent mansion was patrolled by Evelyn’s private security guards, their heavy, rhythmic footsteps occasionally echoing through the hallway like the ticking of a grandfather clock counting down to her execution.Downstairs, the muffled, violent sound of glass shattering against the marble fireplace signaled Charlie’s descent into a pathetic, drunken stupor. He was completely out of his mind, screaming at the walls, drowning his humiliation in bottle after bottle of expensive scotch. He couldn't face the reality of the slaps Elara had delivered, nor could he face his mother's freezing, silent wrath. He had completely abandoned Lydia to her fate, locking himself in the library to drink himself into oblivion.Upstairs, Lydia sat on the cold floor of her walk-in closet, her knees pulled tightly to her chest, shivering violently. The interior of the custom Mercedes limousine was a silent, terrifying nightmare. She knew that if Tyler opened his mouth further, her fake pregnancy, her fake doctor, and her stolen life would be shattered in front of the Vane matriarch.
