In the midst of their conversation, the waitress wandered over, apologetically alerting them to the imminent closure of the shop. Glancing around the store, Zoe was surprised to see it completely empty, even the furious typist leaving at some point. Through the large bay window, darkness blanketed the streets, the moon high in the sky, drooping slightly to the west.

Catching her disappointment, Jon chuckled. “Come on, finish your coffee and I’ll walk you to your car.”

“I walked here.” She shook her head, lifting the coffee-stained rim to her lips and draining the remnants of her cup.

“Well, I can drive you home if you want.”

A hint of anticipation brimmed in his captivating eyes and it sent a flutter drifting down to her stomach, slowly sinking lower to scorch the soft spot between her thighs. Not trusting herself to speak, she nodded. Being with Jon, away from the criminal comings and goings of SubTerra, felt freeing and she wasn’t ready to lose the feeling just yet.

As he rose, he held his hand out for Zoe. Gratefully accepting the gesture, she was unable to stifle her smile as he led her through the empty café, and out the front door. It chimed melodiously behind them. Passing by the outsized window and the curious stare of the waitress, Zoe relished in the warmth of his arm wrapped around her shoulders. Under the fluorescent glow of the streetlight, Jon paused, swiveling to face her. Releasing a breath she hadn’t known she’d been holding, Zoe found it hard to tear away from the sheen of his lips. His head dipped low, his fingers combing through the silky hairs above her ear before tugging her face to his. His tongue swept across the small part between her lips, her head tilting to allow him to kiss her deeply.

His other hand stretched down, cupping her rear, before breathily breaking away. “Sorry, I was really struggling to control myself.”

Zoe giggled, fingers gliding down the chilled skin of his arms. Her brows furrowed. “You left your coat inside.”

“Shit,” he laughed, glancing down at his bump-laden arms before kissing her forehead softly. “I’ll be back in a minute.”

Watching him jog back in to the café, a smile dancing on her lips, a fresh chill whipped through the shop front. She tightened her jacket around her waist, debating whether to pull out her gloves or wait for the heat of Jon’s large frame. Out of nowhere, a pair of hands grabbed her, yanking her into the musty alleyway. Her heart leapt to her throat, stomach plummeting at the cloaked person standing in front of her. A dark beanie and bandana covered the majority of their face, their body shrouded in a heavy overcoat. Gloved hands outstretched, covering her mouth and pressing her against the grimy wall simultaneously. Zoe’s breath was irregular, coming out in ragged pants as fear radiated through her.

“The safest thing for you to do, Zoe, is stay as far away from him as possible.”

She felt the deep lines sinking between her brows, her desperation to speak stifled by the firm palm slapped across her mouth. Tawny eyes, infused with intense warning bore into her – although Zoe felt no prevalent signs of danger. Resentment bubbled beneath the surface, but there was a complete lack of threat.

“Do not make us warn you again.”

“She almost wouldn’t let me back in. I had to tell her… What the fuck?” Jon’s thick brawn filled the entrance of the alley, darkening an already gloomy space, before he lunged forward. “Get the fuck away from her!”

The grasp on Zoe released, the shadowy figure stealthily dodging Jon’s encroaching frame. He swung, however they were nimble, darting out of his firing line. Kicking at his knee, they took his buckling as an opportunity to flee. Desperately grabbing at them from his half-knelt position, his fingers curled around the fabric of the beanie, snatching it off to reveal short, wavy chestnut hair, tinged with golden streaks, whipping in the wind as she ran.

Hoisting himself up, Jon hovered in front of her, shaky hands running across the curves of her face to ensure she was unharmed. “Are you okay?”

Nodding hesitantly, Zoe chewed on her bottom lip. “Yeah. She didn’t try and hurt me, just… just warned me.”

“Warned you? Warned you of what?”

“You.”

“Fuck,” he exhaled, the word drawn out as he scrubbed at the well-trodden lines on his head. “I’m so sorry. I should’ve made you come with me. Are you sure you’re okay?”

Choking back the shock that had settled within her, Zoe bobbed her head, sinking into the tight squeeze of Jon’s protective embrace. Kissing the crown of her head, he kept her close to his chest. She could hear the quickened pace of his heart, feel the unease in his grip. Doubt trickled into her mind, debating his claim of safety, but as he clung to her, she felt it begin to ease.

“I think I’m just ready to be home,” she murmured into his tense shoulder.

Untangling himself from her limbs, Jon nodded, fingers lacing with her tightly as he led her to the black BMW – the only car left in the parking lot. The drive took mere minutes, the unkempt apartment complex soon looming in front of them.

“This is me.”

Pulling into the dim lot, Jon’s gaze settled on her wind-whipped cheeks - flushed and rosy. He leant forward, resting his palm against her face. Closing the gap between them, Zoe allowed her hands to slip down to the soft skin of his neck. She tugged him closer, sinking delicately into the firm leather as his weight shifted against her. His hand slid beneath her shirt, warm hands gripping warm skin, and Zoe was unable to stifle the whimper that escaped her. The apex of her thighs burned now, all memories of the earlier incident erased by the slick dance of his tongue.

“Do you want to come inside?” she murmured against his lips, eyes closed in anticipation.

Her ears rang with the sound of his husky growl, thick and raspy with want. “More than fucking anything.”

The bed shifted, Jon stirring as he strained to lift the heavy lids covering his eyes. Exhaustion sank into his muscles. Slender fingers slid across his back, brushing soothing circles over the thin fabric of his t-shirt. His body visibly relaxed beneath the gentle touch, eyes still closed as the warmth of her chest pressed against him beneath the comforter.“I couldn’t sleep without you.” Zoe kissed his shoulder, the waves of her hair rustling as she nuzzled deeper into his frame.Cracking his eyes open, Jon’s heart thudded beneath the tight skin of his chest, the realization that she was back hitting him squarely in the face. He hastily shifted, rolling to take in the small furrow of her brows, the tear-stained cheeks. “Fuck, Zoe. I’m so fucking sorry,” he murmured, wide palm cupping her cheek as he tentatively scooped forward. “It was so fucking dumb and-”Zoe closed the gap between them, his words dying out against supple lips. “It was really stupid,” she whispered, her fingers da

“How am I going to know it’s you?” Zoe squeaked, rising on trembling legs as the whooshing of her heartbeat echoed in her ears. She steadied herself on the vanity, feeling a fresh wave of nausea roil her stomach.“Black button-down. Grey tie. Short brown hair.”He was clipped, curt and Zoe assumed he was trying to avoid detection. The phone disconnected, her legs hastily moving as she scrambled to pack a bag with enough essentials to last her a week, at least. Hoisting up her flimsy mattress, she clutched the small amount of cash she’d saved and stuffed it into her duffel. Thank God she’d taken to working the floor, she sighed. If she hadn’t, she wouldn’t have had the money to pay George’s discounted price.A sharp rap rang through the terse apartment. Tiptoeing to the front door, her heart thudding in her throat, Zoe pressed her eye to the peephole. A stocky figure stood in the doorway, distorted by the lens. She spied the black button-down, the grey tie, the cropped brown hair. It w

Sunlight filtered through the lounge room window, illuminating the dusty, thrifted furniture littering Zoe’s apartment. Aching muscles groaned as she lifted herself off the sofa, stretching her weary limbs as memories of last night flooded back. Remaining where she was sounded ideal, however the kink in her neck, ache in her back and the thick stench of the bar permeating her clothes forced her up. Her fingers twitched, inching toward her upturned cell phone as a small eddy of nerves twirled in her stomach.Three message notifications awaited her, Jon’s name repeated on the screen.‘I’m so sorry, Zo. I don’t know what the fuck I was thinking.’‘Please say something.’‘I love you. I know that’s hard to believe considering what I’ve done, but I do. If I could take it back, I would. You have to know that.’Zoe squeezed her eyes shut, pinching the bridge of her nose as she tossed the phone back onto the sofa. She rolled her neck, wincing at the twinge on her left side, before ambling to t

The garage door had closed long ago yet Jon remained frozen where he was. The lights had shut off automatically a few moments after Zoe’s car had disappeared, leaving him alone in the darkness. His knees ached, perched against the concrete, his shoulders slumping as tears stung the corners of his eyes. Self-pity was slowly morphing, the first lashes of rage ripping through his sinewy frame - fury for thinking fucking Elizabeth was the smartest option, anger for being so fucking impatient he couldn’t have spent a few more days away from Zoe, plotting Harley’s location to end it once and for all, rage for allowing himself to truly believe that he could sustain a relationship with someone as sweet and pure as Zoe.Before he could even comprehend what he was doing, he was up on tender knees, the frenzied tempest boiling through his veins exploding. His fist collided against the concrete wall with a dull thud. Pain radiated through his knuckles, traipsing up his

The tiny one-bedroom apartment Zoe called home seemed more faded and rundown than she’d remembered, and her shoulders drooped as she shuffled in the door, her keys clinking into the dusty bowl. Muffled voices from above and the soft rumble of the television next door reminded her she wasn’t alone. Sighing, she dumped her bag beside her feet, ambling towards the sofa. She needed a shower, a sleep and some food but any remaining energy after her shift had been zapped from her. Curling her legs beneath her, Zoe flicked on the television, attempting to drown out the events of the night with mind-numbing reality TV.A sharp rap on the scratched door destroyed that glimmer of hope.Squeezing her eyes closed, Zoe prayed it wasn’t Jon on the other side. She wasn’t certain she’d be able to walk away so easily this time. Onyx eyes rimming red as he stared up at her hopelessly, the tormented look of desperation etching in to his features, had been hard enough to leave the first time. Tiptoeing t

With her mind humming, a tornado of thoughts hurtling against the confines of her skull, Zoe pressed her foot on the pedal. The thrum of her heart racing beneath her sternum, the churning of her stomach, her body was giving in to the sensory overload of her grief. Jon had slept with Elizabeth. As much as she ached to deny the claim, something deep down inside her screamed that it was true. The drive was mind-numbingly slow, no matter how hard she mashed her foot against the metal, however, as she glanced at the speedometer, it hovered far above the speed limit. She exhaled shakily. The streets whipped by in a wicked blur, streetlights fuzzy through tear-streaked eyes. The weightlessness she had felt earlier had disappeared, replaced with a sickening pain that threatened to snap her in two.By the time her car skidded to a halt in Jon’s garage, Zoe was certain her heart was physically protruding through the black cotton of her shirt. With clammy hands, she stepped from the car. She fel
