LOGINCHAPTER 4: An Unholy Alliance
The first time Nikolai saw Dimitri fight, he fell in love, the second time he fell to his knees, and this was the third time and all he could think about was how beautiful death looked on him. They moved through the service tunnels like ghosts, silent and efficient. Nikolai led while Dimitri followed, they didn't speak because they didn't need to, and the tunnels were ancient and dark and smelled like wet stone and old rot.
Nikolai's heart was pounding, not from fear because he'd been in worse situations than this, but from the sheer proximity of Dimitri, so close that he could feel the heat radiating off his body, and could hear every breath he took.
They reached a dead end, a rusted iron gate that barred their path. Nikolai tested it and found it locked, he turned to Dimitri with frustration in his voice. "Damn it, we need to go back."
Dimitri shook his head, his voice was flat and certain. "No we can’t. Because they're in the main hall and if we go back we die."
"So we just stay here?"
"We climb." Dimitri pointed to a rusted ladder embedded in the wall, and it led to a ventilation shaft that was barely wide enough for a man to squeeze through. "It’ll take us to the roof, and from there we can escape."
Nikolai stared at the ladder, then at Dimitri, and he couldn't help the smirk that crossed his face. "You want to crawl through that? But you're claustrophobic."
Dimitri's eyes narrowed dangerously. "How do you know that?"
"I know everything about you, Grigori, because I make it my business." Nikolai's smirk widened, gesturing toward the ladder with exaggerated courtesy. "But if you're willing, I'm willing, so after you."
Dimitri didn't argue, he grabbed the ladder and started climbing, and Nikolai followed close behind because there was no other choice.
The shaft was a nightmare of darkness and cramped spaces, and Nikolai could feel the metal walls pressing in on him from all sides. His shoulders scraped against them with every movement, and his breath came in short sharp bursts that were loud in the silence.
He could see Dimitri in front of him, moving with an almost inhuman grace, and the man was beautiful in motion, fluid and precise and deadly, and as Nikolai watched him, he felt something twist in his chest that he refused to name. They emerged onto the roof gasping for air, as the city stretched out before them like a glittering carpet, indifferent to their survival, and below them the theater was still alive with gunfire and screams.
Nikolai sat down on the cold concrete, pulled off his jacket, his shirt was torn and bloody, as he looked down at the gash on his shoulder and winced because it was worse than he'd let on.
Dimitri watched him with those cold, calculating eyes, and his voice was flat but there was something underneath it. "You're bleeding."
"Yeah no shit. Obviously."
"Let me see."
Nikolai looked up in surprise, and Dimitri's face was unreadable but his eyes were soft, almost worried. Nikolai let him look and let him touch because he couldn't help himself.
Dimitri's fingers were cold against his skin, clinical and efficient, but there was a tremor there, a slight hesitation that made Nikolai's heart stop.
"You saved my life back there," Dimitri said quietly, his eyes met Nikolai's with something that might have been confusion. "Why?"
"Because I wanted to."
"That's not an answer."
"It's the only one you're going to get."
Dimitri's jaw tightened, his voice was sharp and cutting. "We're enemies, Petrov, so you should have let me die, because it would have been easier for you."
"I don't want easy." Nikolai reached up and grabbed Dimitri's wrist, his grip was firm and almost painful. "I want you."
Dimitri froze, and for a long moment neither of them moved, the tension between them was suffocating and electric and alive. Just then Nikolai pulled him closer and Dimitri didn't resist. The kiss was brutal and desperate, a collision of teeth and hunger, as they clawed at each other like animals, months of hatred and obsession finally spilling over in a torrent of need.
When Dimitri pulled back, his eyes were wild, his breath ragged, and his voice was shaky when he spoke. "This doesn't mean anything."
Nikolai laughed, low, dark and knowing. "Yeah. Keep telling yourself that."
Dimitri didn't bother arguing because they both knew he was lying.
CHAPTER 13: The Close CallThe days that followed the attack on Igor's warehouse were tense, charged with an electricity that Dimitri could feel in his bones because every shadow seemed deeper and every whisper seemed louder, as if the city itself was holding its breath while waiting for something to happen.Dimitri moved through his daily routine with practiced ease, attending meetings and giving orders while maintaining the facade of a man who was barely holding on, although inside he was coiled like a spring, ready to snap at any moment because the waiting was the worst part, even worse than the fighting. His phone buzzed late one evening, and he knew it was Nikolai before he even looked because there was something about the timing that felt urgent, something in the way the screen lit up that made his blood run cold."We have a problem."Dimitri's heart stopped for a fraction of a second before he typed back quickly, his fingers moving faster than his mind could keep up."What kind
CHAPTER 12: The SecretDimitri couldn't sleep. He lay in his bed, staring at the ceiling, his mind racing with thoughts of the plan, of Krasny, of Nikolai. The city was silent outside his window, but his heart was anything but quiet. His phone buzzed on the nightstand, and he reached for it without thinking."Can't sleep either?"Dimitri smiled despite himself."What gave it away?""Lucky guess. Meet me at the usual place. I need to see you.""It's 2 AM.""I know. That's the point. No one will see us."Dimitri hesitated for only a moment before typing back."Fine. Give me 20 minutes.""I'll be waiting."The rooftop was cold and windswept, but Dimitri barely noticed because his eyes were fixed on the figure waiting for him in the shadows."You're getting predictable," Dimitri said as he stepped out of the darkness.Nikolai turned, his grin bright even in the dim light. "Predictable? Or reliable?""Same thing, really.""Ouch." Nikolai crossed the distance between them, his eyes soft and
CHAPTER 11: The PerformanceThe city had changed while they were gone, and Dimitri noticed it the moment he stepped back into his territory because the air was different now, charged with something electric and dangerous that made his men move faster, more alert, their eyes scanning every shadow as though they expected an attack at any moment. They were afraid, and fear kept people alive, so Dimitri walked into his penthouse with his shoulders straight and his expression cold and unreadable because he had to look strong, although inside he was a mess."Sir," Alexei appeared at his side, his voice low and urgent. "We have a situation."Dimitri didn't break stride. "Define 'situation.'""Word is spreading that you and Petrov were seen together and that you escaped together, so the families are talking, and they think you made a deal with the enemy.""Let them talk," Dimitri said, his voice like ice, because he didn't answer to the families, nor would he ever."No, sir. But—" Alexei hesi
CHAPTER 10: The TrapThe safehouse had become a prison.Dimitri paced the length of the room, his boots echoing against the cracked floorboards. Three days had passed since their meeting with Pavel, and they were no closer to finding Viktor Krasny."We can't stay here forever," he said, his voice tight with frustration. "We're sitting ducks. If Krasny doesn't find us, we'll starve. Or go insane. Whichever comes first."Nikolai looked up from the map spread across the table. "I know. But we can't go back without a plan. We walk into the city blind, and we're dead.""So what do you suggest? We wait until he decides to come for us?""No." Nikolai's voice was quiet, but there was steel underneath it. "We stop waiting. We make our move. We go back to the city, but we don't hide. We make ourselves visible. We make it look like we're vulnerable. And when he comes for us, we're ready."Dimitri stopped pacing and turned to face him. "That's risky. If he's as careful as Pavel says, he'll see th
CHAPTER 9: The HuntThe warehouse was a rotting skeleton of rusted steel and shattered glass, its guts exposed to the grey sky like a corpse left for the crows. Dimitri crouched behind a crumbling wall, his eyes scanning the perimeter, his finger resting on the trigger of his gun."Clear," he murmured.Nikolai moved beside him, silent as a shadow. His usual smirk was gone, replaced by something harder, sharper. The demon was awake now, and he was hungry."You sure this contact of yours is reliable?" Dimitri asked, his voice barely above a whisper."As reliable as anyone in this business." Nikolai's eyes never stopped moving. "Which means not very. But he owes me. And he knows what happens to people who don't pay their debts."They slipped through a gap in the chain-link fence, their footsteps silent on the cracked concrete. The warehouse loomed above them, dark and empty, its windows like hollow eyes staring down at them.Inside, the air was thick with dust and the smell of decay. Old
CHAPTER 8: The AftermathDimitri woke to the sound of rain pattering against the boarded-up windows. The safehouse was dark and cold, the morning light struggling to filter through the cracks. For a moment, he forgot where he was. Then he felt the warmth beside him, felt the steady rhythm of Nikolai's breathing, and everything came flooding back. The attack. The escape. The safehouse. The surrender. He turned his head and found Nikolai watching him, his dark eyes soft and warm in the dim light."Good morning," Nikolai murmured, his voice rough with sleep. "You look less like you want to kill me today."Dimitri snorted. "Don't push your luck, Petrov."Nikolai grinned, and it was the same infuriating grin that had driven Dimitri crazy for three years. But now, it didn't make him want to punch Nikolai. It made him want to kiss him.So he did.It was a soft kiss, gentle and unhurried, a continuation of everything they had shared the night before. When Dimitri pulled back, Nikolai's eyes w
