Chapter 4

Author: Bright Lights
The rest of the class, having taken Elmer's bribes, all jumped in to tear me apart.

"Julian, sure, you sponsored him, but he's still a person. You don't get to trample on his dignity just because you paid for things."

"Real charity doesn't expect anything back. The second you start expecting something in return, that's not charity, that's a transaction."

"Elmer didn't want to be your servant anymore, so he pulled out. And now you're using money to guilt-trip him. That's low."

Listening to them tear into me, I turned back to look at Elmer's face, flushed red with righteous outrage, and felt nothing but disbelief at how absurd it all was.

If it weren't for me, he wouldn't have had the chance to read a single book—he would've dropped out and been working some dead-end job years ago.

Who in their right mind spends tens of thousands of real dollars just to humiliate some poor kid they'd never even met before?

"Elmer, since you're calling it humiliation, then give back every cent I ever spent on you."

Elmer blinked, then let out a sneer dripping with contempt. "Fine, I'll pay it back! Who wants your filthy money anyway?"

I nodded. "Make sure it's quick."

The payment deadline on the card was coming up fast, and I didn't want him draining it dry before he could pay me back.

Elmer rolled his eyes and shot back, all bitter sarcasm. "What's the rush? Scared I'll skip out on the debt? You're so obsessed with money it's pathetic. Chasing me down over pocket change."

The rest of the class snickered along with him as they filed out.

That wasn't the end of it, either. That same night, a post titled "Watch Out for People Who Suddenly Start Sponsoring You" went up on the campus forum and social media.

In it, Elmer cast himself as the plucky, fragile scholarship kid overcoming the odds. He painted me as some controlling, borderline psychotic sugar daddy.

He twisted the facts, claiming I'd pulled my funding because he'd refused to help me cheat on an exam. He said I only gave him money so I could watch him grovel, that I got off on humiliating the poor.

Within hours, I'd been dragged into the spotlight, turned into the campus's most hated guy overnight.

It didn't take long before someone dug up my photo and started passing it around.

The people who'd taken Elmer's bribes kept piling on, painting me as some irredeemable villain.

A few students who didn't know any better got swept up in it and decided the whole thing must have been my fault.

I walked across campus while people pointed and whispered. I kept my face blank and pushed through the crowd without giving it a second thought.

I had nothing to hide, and lies like that always come back around on the people who spread them eventually.

Back in the dorm, I was a little thirsty. I walked to my desk, picked up my thermos, twisted the cap off, and tipped it back to drink.

The second it touched my lips, a foul, rancid smell hit my nose.

I frowned and immediately poured it into a spare white ceramic mug instead.

What should've been clear water had settled into a layer of grayish-black sludge at the bottom, tangled with strands of hair and dust. The water was murky, clouded through and through.

Staring at that filthy cup, I let out a bitter laugh.

Apparently, some people weren't content with just running their mouths anymore.

I looked around the room and held up the mug. "Who did this?"

Dead silence. Nobody dared to answer.

My gaze finally landed on Elmer. He sat in his chair, watching the scene unfold like he was enjoying a show.

That was when Preston Shelly hopped down from his bunk and stepped in front of Elmer, practically vibrating with righteous fury.

"That was me! You got a problem with that? I can't stand the way you push Elmer around! People like you, who throw your weight around just because you've got a little money, need to be taught a lesson!"

Elmer's face lit up. He pulled a brand-new gold necklace out of his pocket and tossed it to Preston.

Elmer dragged his frail, sickly mother along, and the two of them dropped straight to their knees on the concrete. He grabbed at the hem of my pants, forehead striking the ground with a dull, heavy thud."Please, save me! I know I was wrong. I know it now!"There's no way I can pay this back, not even if I sell everything I own!"My mom's waiting on this money for her surgery. If you push me on this, we're both as good as dead!"His frail mother knelt beside him too, trembling, tears streaming down her face."Young man, Elmer didn't know better. We're the ones in the wrong here. Please, show some mercy. Can you just let this debt go?"Watching the two of them sobbing on their knees, the crowd around us started to soften, a few even murmuring in my direction, urging me to reconsider."Just let it go. It's a person's life on the line here. His mother looks so pitiful."Looking down at Elmer putting on his little performance of pity and pleading, I let out a short, humorless laug

Elmer came completely undone. "No! I won't pay this! There's no way I can cover it!"My family's poor, my mom's sick in the hospital right now! If I take on that kind of debt, she won't have money for treatment!"Please, have mercy on me!"Watching him break down, sobbing without a shred of dignity left, I felt nothing but bitter irony."Elmer. You want me to have mercy? I already showed you mercy once—I paid your tuition, I made sure you never went hungry, I handed you fifty dollars a day out of my own pocket so you wouldn't starve."And what did you call it back then? You said I was humiliating you. That I was some high-and-mighty tyrant crushing your dignity underfoot."So what now? You want me to humiliate you on purpose?"Elmer's sobbing cut off instantly. He bit his lip, his face drained of all color. After a long, heavy pause, he finally forced out a single word through gritted teeth."Yes."I let out a cold laugh, not a trace of pity in my eyes. "Unfortunately, I'm

Preston completely lost it now. He lunged forward and grabbed my wrist, tears springing up instantly."Please! I'm begging you!""You know my situation. My parents are just regular factory workers. We couldn't scrape together that kind of money even if we sold everything we owned! Just let it go, please. I really do know I messed up."Watching him dissolve into tears, I felt absolutely nothing. "Where was all this regret when you were smashing my things? Scared now that it's real? Too late. You're paying, no way around it."Seeing that begging wasn't working, Preston actually dropped to his knees and wrapped his arms around my legs, sobbing."I'm begging you, I'll die if you don't let this go! Just don't press charges, and I'll do anything you want! Please, have mercy!"Disgusted, I yanked my leg free and stepped back, looking down at him coldly. "Get up. There's no room to negotiate on the one million. Either you pay up, or you wait for the court summons."Preston slumped to th

"Take a good look. This is a certificate from an internationally recognized appraisal authority. Not only is it authentic, the current market valuation only ever goes up. Do you want me to read the certification number out loud?"It was in black and white text, with an official red seal—it was a slap across the face he couldn't argue with.Elmer stared at the screen, his face cycling through shades of green and white, and shrieked, "That has to be fake! You forged it! You're so desperate for money you're trying to shake me down with some phony document!"I didn't bother wasting more breath on him. I turned instead to Preston, who was already starting to look shaken, and gave him a faint, knowing smile."Preston, you're the one who smashed it—he just told you to. But if he can't come up with the money, the law's going to come looking for whoever actually did the damage. If Elmer won't cover this for you, that one million is coming out of your pocket."That landed exactly where it h

Elmer's face went bone white in an instant. He stood frozen, knuckles bleached where he gripped his phone, eyes wide with disbelief. "What do you mean, settle the balance? Isn't this a black card? Why would I have to pay anything back?"Watching him flounder like someone who'd never seen the real world, I couldn't help laughing, though there was a trace of pity in it."Elmer, do you actually not understand how a black card works? It's just a credit card with a higher limit than normal. Whatever you charge to it, you have to pay back eventually. Did you seriously think it was some kind of bottomless ATM?"Elmer's whole body locked up, like the life had drained straight out of him, his face gone sickly pale.Preston, oblivious to the fact that Elmer looked like he was about to collapse, kept right on running his mouth, rolling his eyes at me."Don't act like you're the only one who knows this stuff. Elmer just got found by his rich family—he hasn't gotten used to the whole high-soc

"Nice work! Here, this is the latest style—consider it your reward."Preston took the necklace, unable to hide how much he loved it, and shot me a look that dripped with even more disdain.Elmer rose to his feet and pointed at the thermos, the scarf, the desk lamp—all things I'd given him back when we first met—and sneered."Look at you, so full of yourself. Not like me—when I give someone a gift, I give them the best."And you? All you ever gave me was your own castoffs, just to make me feel small. Like this junk, for instance!"He snatched up the thermos and hurled it to the floor. There was a loud clang as the stainless steel body crumpled out of shape.Honestly, back when I'd given him those things, I was worried about hurting his pride, worried he'd feel like he was being handed charity. That's why I'd played it down, telling him they were just things sitting unused around my house. But every single item had been brand new, carefully picked out.Watching him smash things
