LOGINJohn slowed down, no longer hearing the wolves on his tail. Exhausted, he found a brief respite at the base of a towering tree. The transition from his first shift had left the young lynx shifter utterly drained. Before he could even process it, another painful transformation gripped him. His body contorted, bones snapping and reshaping, and he passed out from the sheer effort and exhaustion of the night’s ordeal.
When his eyes finally fluttered open, they focused on the scene above him. He was sprawled beneath the protective canopy of a tall oak tree. The crisp, invigorating forest air sent a delicate chill down his spine, reminding him that he was back in his human form and completely naked. What was he going to do? How could he return to camp with those wolves still possibly chasing him?
Lying under the tree with his hands folded behind his head, John replayed the events over and over again. He had finally decided to leave his past behind for a fresh start, but his choice to save money by camping in an unfamiliar place had thrust him into a situation far worse than the one he left. He needed a plan. As he stared at the sky through the thick canopy of trees, he could tell that night would soon give way to day. "Are you there?" he asked, speaking only to the voice in his head. After a few moments, the voice responded. "No worries. I will get you out of here. But you need rest; your body is still adjusting to me. Sleep. I will keep guard," the inner voice said. Comforted by his lynx presence, gradually, John succumbed to sleep.
As the sun rose behind the horizon, it cast a warm glow over the awakening forest. The alpha bear, having just completed his night border patrol, was ready to return to his packland. However, an irresistible urge pulled him northward, away from his usual path and territory. The early morning forest, typically serene, now echoed with the purposeful strides of the alpha bear. He navigated the familiar terrain, ever vigilant for potential threats. The sunlight now pierced through the dense canopy, as if illuminating a path to someone or something important.
Suddenly, the bear stopped, lifting his massive head to sniff the air, catching an intriguing scent on the breeze. At that moment, a low hum drew his attention. He turned his head sharply and spotted something on the ground. Moving closer, he realised it was a young man, dishevelled, asleep, and completely exposed.
The stranger was lying on his side, his ivory skin almost sparkling in the early sunlight. Darius could spot some of his face, with soft, almost angelic features mostly hidden beneath a mane of blond curls. His lean, muscular body was curled up in a ball. Something within Darius stirred in the presence of this mysterious individual. The bear moved closer, intrigued and eager to learn more about the young man.
The snapping sound of broken twigs jolted John awake from his restless slumber. His eyes opened to find a massive bear standing over him.
The bear, with its dark brown fur accented by a striking lighter stripe, looked intimidating. Its big, dark eyes, resembling deep pools, were fixed intently on John, as if deciding whether he was dinner or a friend.
Fear gripped John as he scrambled backward, trying to cover himself while putting as much distance as possible between him and the wild animal.
Just as he was about to crawl away, he heard the now-familiar sound of bones snapping back into place. John's thoughts raced. "Another one!" he thought, eyes wide, as he witnessed yet another transformation.
With the same ease as the werewolves he had encountered, the bear shifted back to his human form. His robust muscles flexed, causing his fur to gradually recede. Now standing as a strikingly handsome man, towering at least six-foot-seven, he resembled a formidable American football player—powerful, large, with a rugged, tattooed body. A cascade of dark, untamed brown locks framed his well-defined face, and his intense brown eyes locked onto John's gaze. John noted how the hair, a direct reflection of his inner bear, caught the sunlight, giving it a highlighted appearance. John had never seen something so godlike in the flesh, and his eyes roamed over the man's body until they travelled downward. Big mistake! He had forgotten how exposed the man would be. His eyes lingered on the man's manhood for a split second longer than he should have, noticing how well-endowed he was. John's eyes snapped up to meet the stranger's, who was now smirking knowingly as his member twitched under John's curious gaze. A blush tinged John's cheeks as he quickly averted his eyes.
In stark contrast to Darius's imposing presence, John seemed small and vulnerable. His slight frame and pale complexion made him look out of place in the wild. Nervously, he watched Darius, his curly blonde hair framing his anxious expression like a soft halo. John's vivid green eyes, catching hints of grey in the sunlight, locked with Darius's dark ones, and that's when the alpha bear felt it. It was like a connection—something linking him to the young man before him. Could it be? Darius wondered, while his inner bear assessed the shifter from within. The magnetic presence of this mysterious stranger left them spellbound, their hearts beating in unison.
Darius, careful not to startle John further, raised an eyebrow. His voice, rough yet filled with concern, broke the silence. "You're a shifter, aren't you?"
John visibly relaxed at the gentle tone, nodding as his voice trembled slightly. "Yes, I am. I didn't mean to intrude. I'm lost and have no idea how I ended up here. I'm just trying to find my way back to the nearest town." His eyes stayed fixed on the striking man before him, the sunlight enhancing Darius's rugged beauty to an almost otherworldly level. Despite not understanding why, John felt a magnetic pull toward this enigmatic stranger.
Darius sensed John's growing unease and nervousness at their naked state, and wondered why a shifter would be so self-conscious. Instead of voicing his thoughts, he leaned forward with deliberate caution. John noticed a small bag tied to Darius's leg, containing a set of clothes.
Darius grabbed a T-shirt and handed it to John while he put on a pair of short joggers. John gratefully slipped the garment over his head, feeling a mix of amusement and curiosity at the soft and faraway purr from his inner lynx. This was the first time since he had woken that his lynx had made his presence known again.
The imposing man, whose bear form had been massive, crossed his arms. His tattoos stretched over his tanned skin, adding to his strong appeal. "You're far from the nearest town, my friend. What brought you here?"
John hesitated, searching for the right words. "I was camping, on my way to the next state."
Darius nodded. "I see. You must have quite a story. I'm Darius, by the way."
"I'm John. Thank you for not... well, you know."
Darius chuckled, a faint smile playing on his lips. The T-shirt hung loosely on John, highlighting their size difference. "I'm not one to harm another shifter without reason. We've got enough to deal with out here."
With a nod, Darius extended his hand to John. "I can guide you to the nearest town, but you need clothes and supplies first. We're near my village. Can you shift? It will be quicker to get there in our animal form."
John tried to connect with his lynx but drew a blank for the first time. He shook his head no and stood up ignoring the extended hand in front of him. Darius raised an eyebrow but didn't comment. "Fine then, we'll walk," he said, starting to move in the direction he had come from.
Rewritten
Two months after it had served as a battleground, the square-like clearing now buzzed with life and activity. The pack was in high spirits as they prepared for the full moon celebration. Where there had once been quiet and sombre cleanup efforts following the battle, there was now joy and excitement. Members of the pack, young and old, were busy making final preparations for the evening. Large tables were set up under a gazebo on one side of the clearing, creating a communal space for dining. Nearby, some of the warriors were constructing a pile of logs and kindling, destined to become a roaring bonfire after sunset. The air was filled with laughter and chatter, and children’s playful screams echoed through the clearing as they ran around, immersed in games and chasing one another. The village, transformed by a spirit of camaraderie and celebration, was a stark contrast to its recent past. John walked alongside his grandmother, a sense of peace settling over him as he took in the liv
John hovered on the brink of consciousness, the persistent beep piercing through the fog of his mind, drawing him back from the depths of unconsciousness. Battling against heavy eyelids, he struggled to open them, confusion swirling within. With a determined effort, his eyelids fluttered apart, greeted by the glaring brightness of the room. The intense light assaulted his senses, compelling him to squint as he tried to orient himself. The walls gleamed with clinical whiteness, the scent of antiseptic triggering a sense of déjà vu. How did he end up here again? As his vision adjusted, he recognized the familiar sights of the infirmary—the neatly arranged medications on the nearby table, the incessant beeping was coming from the medical equipment attached to his chest. The more he took in his surroundings, the more reality flooded back, hitting him like a tidal wave: the attack, Mason, Darius! Darius was stabbed! Panicking, John attempted to move, urgency to find Darius consuming him
"Ah, my little pet," Mason said, pulling a handcuffed Desmond forward. "Looks like he's been used as entertainment for that werewolf pack," he laughed without emotion. "Too bad he's now my little pet, and I have no intention of returning him." "Darius," the man, Desmond, whispered with a broken voice. He sounded broken. "My family?" he asked, and Darius replied, "Prius and Carla are here, fighting against the scum that is threatening their Luna's life." John's gaze flickered between Darius and the captive, his confusion palpable. He was about to voice his inquiry when Mason's voice cut through, demanding attention once more. "Enough with the sob stuff," Mason sneered, redirecting John's focus back to him. "So, the little lamb thinks he can challenge the big bad 'wolf'," Mason taunted, a smirk playing on his lips. John's eyes narrowed, a glint of defiance shining within them. "I've faced bigger threats than you," he declared, though uncertainty lingered beneath his bravado. Mason
John felt a growing unease gnawing at him as he muttered to himself, "What's happening?" while scanning the area with a furrowed brow. Turning to Darius, he sought an update. Seeking information, Darius reached out to Fez. "What's the status?" he asked. Fez's response was swift. "The rogues are holding their position, as if they're waiting for orders. They seem to be alone." As the pack's Luna, John tuned into their mindlink conversation, raising an eyebrow. "How many are we talking about, Fez?" he piped in. "About seven on our side, Luna," Fez reported. "Only seven?" John's concern deepened. "And overall?" "Approximately sixty, as we have estimated," Fez confirmed. Though Fez couldn't see him, John nodded, sharing his feeling of unease and asking the tracker to keep his guard up. John couldn't quite put his finger on it, but something felt amiss. Prius had briefed him on the ruthless nature of the rogues, their disregard for life being well-known. However, this situation didn't
Desmond sat in his usual position, seated on the floor, his back against the cold stonewall of the cell. His arms were folded over his knees, and he rested his head on one of them, the dim light casting faint shadows across the room. It was a small comfort to him as the darkness was no longer as suffocating as it once was, courtesy of what he could only assume was the intervention of his mate. Though he still lacked the “luxuries” of the other cells, such as a bed or amenities, Desmond was no longer shackled like an animal. Instead, he had been granted small reprieves—a daily meal, the absence of chains—that served as a stark reminder of his newfound, albeit uncertain, freedom. Despite the lingering grime and tattered clothing, he felt a glimmer of strength returning to him, his body slowly healing from the wounds inflicted during his captivity. The scars would remain, a testament to his endurance and resilience in the face of adversity, but they no longer bore the weight of despair
Mason paced back and forth, his keen gaze sweeping over the crowd of shifters gathered before him. Low growls filled the air, a testament to the simmering anger and tension that emanated from the group of rogues standing before him. Their red eyes glinted with defiance, their dirty clothes and unkempt appearances serving as a stark contrast to the more polished warriors of the Feral Glen pack. Turning his attention to Arlo, Mason's expression was unreadable as he addressed him. "You are not as useless as I thought," he remarked with a hint of begrudging respect. "How many do we have now?" Arlo gritted his teeth, his patience wearing thin in the presence of the egocentric warlock. "59," he replied tersely, his voice tinged with irritation. "We are still short, but it's all we could do." Mason's lips curled into a smug smile as he dismissed Arlo's concerns with a wave of his hand. "They are more than enough," he declared confidently. "Ruthless and with no care for their pathetic lives
As Darius and John arrived at the packhouse, they found Prius and Luke awaiting them on the front porch. John couldn't miss the subtle sniff Prius gave the air, nor the knowing smirk that crossed his lips. "Glad to see you made it back," Prius said with a wink, his words causing a blush to creep up
"Tell me, John," Nat asked, his curiosity evident in his gaze, "where do you come from? When did you meet Darius? And what about your lynx?"John's eyes widened in surprise at the questions, his lynx coming forward within him in response to Nat's inquiry. "How—" John began, but before he could finish
Darius felt a whirlwind of emotions churning within him as he looked at his mate and the stranger standing before them. Was he hearing things correctly? Did John just address the man as his father?"Yes, he did," the stranger's voice cut through the air as if he had plucked the thoughts right out of
Sera emerged from the bathroom, only to be hit by a sudden burst of dizziness that made her sway, prompting her to lean a hand against the wall for support. After regaining her bearings and stability, she pushed away from the wall and started walking back toward the party."What was that?" she though
