“You know you’re a natural with her.”

“Hmmm…she’s just hungry, that’s all.” I grin as she gobbles down the formula, I can’t deny she is seriously cute, but I am not ready to be a guardian or father, and I am fairly sure her mother will come back for her. Or once social services take her, she will get easily adopted out.

“If you say so…but something tells me, that you may have found the one woman that will finally get a commitment from you.” He shoots back and Thomas laughs and nods.

“I bet you $20 he doesn’t make it out of the hospital tomorrow without her, Captain.” He’s packing his med bag up and putting all Willow’s personal items into an evidence bag ready for social services.

“Oh, I am not taking that bet – I know he’s not leaving the hospital without her. I knew it the minute he muttered about her perfect cherub face.” John replies and I look up sharply – did I really say that out loud?

Willow gurgles as she finishes the entire bottle, and I lift her up to my shoulder, patting her back repeatedly as Thomas instructs to the wind out of her. She mewls and sucks on my shoulder as I keep patting her until at last a loud burp sounds. When I pull her back to check on her, she gives me a wide-eyed look – just as surprised by the sound she made as I was. There is a connection in our gaze, one I can’t quite describe, like our souls recognize each other and see kinship in our stares.

“Keep patting her Conall, she’s bound to have more wind than that.” John says, serving up pasta across the kitchen counter, then brings a bowl and fork over and place it before me. I put Willow back on my shoulder and keep patting, her adorable little hiccups and burps enchanting the crew as we eat together.

“So Conall, given you are baby watch, that means you will have to stay behind if we get a call out – which means we need to swap duty rosters - you good with that?” James asks, as he finishes the last of his meal, a grin on his face.

“Yep, I’ve got no issue swapping roster with you, even if it means I’m on clean up duty – you’re favorite.” I wink back, knowing he thinks he’s getting the better end of the deal. Willow finally stops burping and I cuddle her into the crook of my neck, moving from back pats to rubs – this time under John’s instruction.

“Ok boys, who wants in on the Foster Daddy Conall pool?” Thomas asks, and the the entire crew zero’s in on me as Willow slumps against me in sleep, a very soft snuffly snore sounding from her, that tugs at my heart. “I’ve got $20 on him not leaving the hospital without her, who else wants to place bets?”

John gives me a look and a nod to follow him to his office. I get up carefully, james helps me pull out my chair so it doesn’t scrape and wake the baby. The crew are all making their bets, sure that I will be taking Willow home with me – like I have the capacity to look after a baby. I would probably need a nanny, or to have my mother move back in with me.

I can’t believe I’m even thinking about logistics right now.

John closes the door behind us as I enter his office, he sits down behind his desk, motions for me to sit as well, then calls his wife, putting her on speaker for me.

“Hey baby, what’s up?” she answers and real sweet grin crosses his craggily face as he hears his wife’s voice.

“Hey sweetheart, you’re on speaker and we’ve got ourselves a bit of a situation here at the station. Conall found an abandoned baby tonight.” He explains a softness to his voice that I only hear when he speaks to Missy. “Thomas has checked her over and as there doesn’t seem to be anything wrong requiring immediate medical assistance, we are going to wait for the rain to ease before taking her to the hospital for a full checkup. But I need to check her in with my local social services counsellor.”

“Well, consider me checked in, I will get the paperwork started here at home and then can meet you at the Hospital when you go. Do we have any information on the baby – parent – or is it a john or jane doe?” She asks and I can hear her moving about, probably going to her office to log into her laptop. Jahn looks at me and raises his brows, hinting for me to continue.

“It’s a girl, almost 3 moths, we have a photo with who I assume is her mother, the back had writing with the name Willow Sage and 10th of June listed. That’s the only thing even close to identification that we found.” Willow snuffles slightly at the sound of my vice but settles easily back down again. I can hear Missy typing through the phone, and it sets my teeth on edge for some reason.

“Ok that’s more than I was expecting, to have a photo included normally indicates that the parent intends to come back – it’s not in every case, but generally anyone that gives up a child for good, rarely includes anything that can identify them and make it possible to find them. I’m thinking we will probably need to find her a foster carer in the interim.” Missy muses as she continues to type away, and I hate to admit it but I don’t want anyone else to look after Willow. I found her, and when I did something in me shifted and clicked into place.

I clear my throat nervously, wetting my lips with my tongue as I consider the right question to ask. “Missy, what’s the process for becoming a Foster carer?”

John’s eyes look up from the phone to meet mine, a knowing smile on his face, as Missy pauses in her typing for a second.

“Well, this is a welcome enquiry, Conall.” Missy says with a smirk in her voice. “I assume you have someone that would be able to support you and look after her when you are on shift?”

“Yes, my mother can move in with me to help.” I answer, keeping my gaze focused on the phone, ignoring the widening grin splitting Johns mouth wide.

“If you are serious about this Conall, and you need to be really sure, then I can get you vetted and cleared by tomorrow as you already have background checks on record from your job.”

I look down at the innocent vulnerable baby girl sleeping on my shoulder and know my decision is already made. “Start the paperwork – I’ve got to go call my mum.”

John and Thomas where right – Willow is mine and whoever bet tomorrow afternoon on the Foster Daddy pool just made themselves some money.

WillowAfter spending the day with Leola and my very apologetic GeGe getting pampered and preened and prepped for the charity dinner tonight with Finn. I feel relaxed and calm again. Finn just texted to say he is on his way to pick me up, so I have an hour to finishing get dressed.Zale isn’t back from the office yet, so I get dressed with GeGe in the main house. I decided on the fuchsia dress for the event; it matches my freshly dyed hair which I had curled by my hairdresser and GeGe is now pinning artfully for me. The dress is a one shoulder fitted bodice with a wide swing skirt that flares from the waist that stops just past my knees. It is embellished with pink crystals in an ombre from mid-way down the skirt to the hem. I have crystal embellished kitten heels to match.I look good and I’m not too modest to enjoy it.I kind of hope Zale will come home before I leave so he can see me in it. I want to see his reaction when he sees me in it. He’s been at the office all day, giving me

ZaleI haven’t slept. It’s only been a week of having her with me, in my bed every night, being able to hold her and sleep beside her, and now I can’t relax without her here. I wonder if she had the same issue last night? Probably not as Anders reported that she was getting really drunk and ranting about me all night. She probably passed out and had the best sleep of her life while I lay here pining for her. She’s still pissed and hasn’t linked or called or texted me since she stormed out.I know I’m meant to give her the space to calm down and process but I’m not sure how much longer I can stand her silence. I check my phone again for what feels like the millionth.Nothing.Maybe she’s not up yet. It’s only seven am, still early if she’s been up all night drinking and cursing my name. She probably has a killer hangover to go with her hating on me for constantly forgetting to tell about the pact.I head to my home gym, put my earphones on and start pounding my frustration out on the tr

“No Grandfather. I only request that Belinda be taken care of while I’m...remanded.” He asks, looking at me with an expression of pain and regret. Him thinking of his mate has helped to show a small slither of hope that he can be redeemed, but it will be a very long road before he is forgiven and trusted again and not just by his mate but all who know what he did and how he tried to cover it up.I sigh heavily, so utterly disappointed and heartsore for what is coming for him and Belinda.“You are dismissed. Go to conference room three and wait for your mate to find you.” He gets up slowly, dusting off his pants, wiping his face clean and then straightens his shirt, trying to keep some semblance of dignity I suppose.Jeremiah holds his stare for a moment before releasing the soundproofing on the room and stepping aside to let him out. He pauses when he sees two guards waiting for him outside the room, Jeremiah has also linked their orders to them and will finalise the full security deta

  • Discovering the Wolf: Finding the Bond Mender   161. Calebs confession

GeraldI wait patiently as Jeremiah brings my grandson Caleb into my office and seat him in front of me. He’s nervous and he’s avoiding my eyes. I’m so very disappointed in him and everything that I read in Jeremiah’s report, his mate Belinda is going to be devastated when she finds out what has happened. What he has covered up.Jeremiah closes the door and turns on the soundproofing seal to the room; I don’t want anyone else hearing this conversation.“What’s going on Pops?” Caleb asks, looking behind him at Jeremiah who stands leaning against the door, his arms crossed, guarding the only exit.I don’t answer him, just stare him down. “Do you have something to tell me Caleb?”“W...What do you mean?” He stammers, his nerves getting the better of him. I’m not going to let him off that easy and neither is Jeremiah, not with what he discovered. He should know better. He should have come to me.“You have one chance to be honest with me, and I will help you, but if you lie to me there will

Oh wow. What am I looking at?Is that what I think it is?“Leola, how much did my mum tell you about her abilities?” I ask tentatively, trying not to focus on the gold shimmering in my periphery. It’s getting brighter and brighter. I take another swig of vodka, squeeze my eyes shut to see if that helps. It doesn’t.Does alcohol make my sight work better...get brighter?“A fair bit, why? What do you want to know?” She gets up and grabs two packets of chips from her pantry and two tubs of dip from her fridge and puts them on the table in front of us. It’s probably a smart move for us to start eating something as so far all we’ve had is vodka. Maybe getting a little more sober will help me process everything from the pact to the bond that keeps flashing in front of me.“Did she ever talk about...seeing...I guess you could call it gold rope coming from wolves?” I’m frowning as I try to find the right words to explain what I mean. It’s a rope but not a rope...a cord?“I think you are talkin

Willow“I mean what century are we living in?” I rant, as I sit at Leola’s kitchen table and take my fifth shot of vodka while I read through the betrothal pact. It’s all legal speak but essentially says I have been sold to the first-born grandson and of the Ryker Clan - Zale - to ensure a Clan alliance is sealed by the merging of bloodlines through first Zale and I and then any children we have.I’m fuming. That is not happening.“It’s pretty standard for Wolfen society I’m afraid, especially for the clan Alpha families and more so for someone with your abilities.” Leola states and takes a shot next, keeping pace with me and just letting me rage however I need to. I’m grateful to her for letting me process in the way that I want, even if I’m still slightly ticked off at her. “Your mum was pretty pissed when she was first told about it too. She was pretty firm with Alpha Geri that if she was to ever have daughter that they would have to go through her before she allowed them to force h
