LOGINEvelyn.
I groaned as I opened my eyes to the soft morning light streaming through the windows. This wasn’t my room, I noticed. My eyes tracked from the white ceiling to the drip fixed on my wrist. What happened? Did Victor finally bring me to the hospital? And why can’t I remember anything? Just then, a nurse came in. “Hi, you’re awake,” she beamed. “I hope you’re feeling better.” “Where’s my husband?” I asked her. “It wasn’t your husband that brought you here, Mrs Blackthorn.” I wasn’t surprised she knew my name. Victor made sure to keep the social media well informed of his private life. After adjusting my drip, the nurse handed me a cup of water with a straw and asked, “Do you need anything else?” I shook my head as I drained the water in the cup. There was a TV hung on the wall opposite the bed and my eyes were glued to it, because they were showing the events of last night’s banquet. “On second thought, can you please increase the volume for me?” She nodded and did so, walking out soon after. “…fainted on stage and was rescued by a mysterious stranger. Rumors have been circulating that he is a member of the mafia, but due to the fact that his face wasn’t captured, we aren’t able to prove anything yet.” My heart thumped as I watched the news. The way I slumped on the stage was unflattering and Victor would be sure to point that out when he comes. But that was the least of my worries now. I needed to leave before the mysterious stranger came back, or worse, my husband. “Public opinions, however, are divided at this point. Some people are in support of the Blackthorn bride, insisting that Mr. Blackthorn has taken it too far…” My heart swelled, knowing that not everyone took his side like they always do. After all, he was a huge celebrity to the people and also on the Forbes list. “…but the majority support Mr. Blackthorn, more so because of the statement he released this morning saying the mysterious stranger was actually Mrs. Blackthorn's lover, and the reason for her miscarriage.” For the first time in a very long time, anger fueled inside me against Victor. Grabbing the remote on the bed stand, I turned the TV off and got to work on removing the drip connected to my wrist. If I stay here any longer, I risk someone seeing me and calling Victor. Or worse, someone calling the paparazzi. I couldn’t wait for the doctor to come in either, because I wasn’t sure they'd discharge me without alerting anyone. When I was done removing everything, I made my way to the door slowly. I was in pain, but I had already endured worse while living with Victor. However, my plan was thwarted when I got to the door. I broke into a run for the elevator, only to collide with a hard body. I groaned as pain wracked through my entire body, but thankfully, I was still on my feet and I realized that the person I ran into was holding me up. “I’m sorry,” I apologized as I looked up to see Liam Kingsley, the king of the corporate world; at least, according to the media. Quickly, I scurried out of his embrace. He was Victor’s rival, being number one on the Forbes list, and I didn’t need anyone to remind me that rich men were cruel. I was a living proof of that, but dang, he’s handsome. His blond hair was gelled back, and his green eyes pierced into my honey ones. “Do I know you?” He asked, effectively snapping me out of my thoughts. “You look familiar.” Shaking my head vigorously, I replied, “No, I’m sure you don’t.” Without wasting time, I tried to bypass him but he held me back. Goosebumps erupted from my body due to the contact and I gasped. I’m sure he felt it too because his lips slightly parted, and I couldn’t help but notice them. Snap out of it, Evelyn. “It was nice to meet you, but I’ve really got to go.” But instead of releasing me from his grip, he just tilted his head like he was studying me. The ding of the elevator sounded behind him, just as a man stepped out. He looked at me, and my heart hammered in my throat as I took in his hoodie. “Get away from her,” he barked as he pulled me away from Liam’s grip. In confusion, I turned to him and asked, “Do I know you?” Liam let out a short laugh and remarked, “The irony. Guess I’ll be seeing you around, little angel.” My eyes widened. Little angel? “Let’s go,” the man holding me said. But I pushed him away. “I’m not going anywhere with you. For all I know, Victor sent you to kill me.” That made him chuckle. “Well, unless you want the doctors to discover that you’re missing and call your husband, I’ll advise you to follow me.” How did he know that I was running from the doctors? As if reading my mind, he answered, “If you were properly discharged, they would call the person who brought you in, no?” “You’re the one that brought me in? You’re the mysterious stranger?” I asked, surprised and extremely grateful. “No, I’m not. But I’m taking you to see him now.” He replied and pulled me over to the elevator just as the doctor entered my room. *** We pulled into an estate, bigger than the Blackthorn Estate. And that’s saying a lot, because the Blackthorns loved to showcase their wealth. This one, however, looked old but still elegant. Getting in, I was nervous to meet the Good Samaritan who came to my aid yesterday. “Don, she’s here,” the man who brought me here said. “Thank you, Marco. You may leave.” I followed the voice I clearly remembered from last night, to see a man in a hoodie coming towards me. My first instinct was to run, because I had always associated hoodies with assassins. But instead, I stood my ground and said, “Thank you so much for saving me yesterday.” “It’s nice to have your acquaintance, Evelyn. I’m Dominic,” he replied, pulling off his hood. And for the second time today, I came face to face with a hot man that could make any woman wet her panties, and I was no exception. Apart from the fact that my savior had dark hair and even darker eyes, he also had piercings and tattoos. I gulped as he moved closer, but I couldn’t move as fear kept me frozen.Dominic.The amber liquid swirled against the crystal glass, catching the low, bloody glow of the neon light overhead. It was three in the morning. Deranged Desires had been closed for hours, the thumping bass and the flashing strobes replaced by a suffocating, heavy silence that always seemed to creep into the lounge when the crowds went home.I sat in the deep leather booth of the private VIP room, my tie loosened, the top two buttons of my shirt undone. I stared blankly at the dark mahogany table. It had been a full, agonizing month since the world shattered at Memorial Sloan Kettering. No matter how much top-shelf bourbon I poured down my throat, the burn couldn't scald away the static in my head. I didn't want to think about it. I had forbidden my men from uttering her name in my presence, tearing up every useless surveillance report Marco brought to my desk. If she wanted to be a ghost, let her haunt the dark. But the silence didn't cure the rot. I was wallowing, sinking into
Evelyn. The bell above the heavy oak door chimed, a bright, cheerful sound that always seemed out of place with the quiet static in my head.I smoothed down the front of the knit cardigan I was wearing, stepping out from behind the counter of The Thread & Needle. It was a small, dusty clothing boutique on Oakhaven’s main street, filled with the scent of cedar wood, linen spray, and aged wool. The owner, an elderly woman named Martha who walked with a heavy silver cane, had taken me on two weeks ago without asking a single question about why an overqualified girl was looking for part-time retail work."Good afternoon," I forced a polite, practiced smile onto my face as a tall man in a flannel shirt and heavy work boots stepped inside. "Let me know if you’re looking for anything specific.""Actually, I think I am," the man replied, dropping his keys onto the counter with a heavy clatter. He had a rugged, friendly face, his eyes crinkling at the corners as he gave me a slow, appreciati
Liam. The swelling in my left eye had finally gone down, leaving behind a deep, ugly shade of yellowish-purple that even the most expensive designer sunglasses couldn’t hide. But the physical wreckage was nothing compared to the absolute silence that had settled over my life.I sat at my desk at the Kingsley Corps headquarters, staring blankly at a spreadsheet of quarterly projections. The numbers blurred together. For the past four days, my phone has been completely useless. Every time I looked at it, I was reminded of that cold, mechanical recording: The number you have dialed is unallocated or no longer in service.A soft knock sounded at my office door. I didn't even look up. "I said no disruptions."The door clicked open anyway, and the heavy, familiar scent of expensive French perfume flooded the room. I didn't need to lift my head to know it was Isabella. She closed the door quietly behind her, stepping into the office with soft, hesitant steps. She wore a tailored black dres
Alaric.I pressed the ice pack harder against my jaw, wincing as the cold bit into the split skin. The blood had stopped oozing, but my face felt like it had been run over.Every breath I took rattled my ribs. Dominic Russo and Liam Kingsley certainly knew how to throw a punch. But the ache in my chest was worse. All these while, I saw her as a pawn, so why did my chest ache now that she’s gone? I finally got Liam and Dominic to lose the one thing they fought over, so why do I feel depressed?I looked over at the velvet tray on the dresser. Sending that video to ruin Kingsley had backfired so perfectly it was almost comical. I wanted to break her heart so she'd turn to me, but instead, I just drove her right into the abyss. The heavy double doors of my St. Regis' penthouse burst open as three men in dark grey suits marched into the room. I looked up to see Commander Edward Harrington, my mother's personal hound."Your Royal Highness," Harrington said, standing at absolute attention. "
Evelyn. The world was entirely silent here, save for the rhythmic, soothing whisper of the wind moving through the pine trees.I sat on the edge of the worn wooden porch, a mug of black coffee cupped between my hands. The morning air in Oakhaven—a tiny, sleepy mountain town tucked far away from the borders of New York—was crisp and bitingly clean. It didn't smell like exhaust, hot asphalt, or expensive cologne. It just smelled like damp earth and pine.It had been three weeks since I threw my SIM card onto the highway. Three weeks since I became a ghost."Evelyn... sweetie?"My mother's voice, frail and raspy, floated through the open screened door. After a few days of setting up a new place for us, my mother had finally recognized me.I don’t know how, maybe because she wasn’t consistently on morphine, or maybe it was just a small town magic. But it had meant everything to me.I immediately stood up, setting my mug down, and hurried inside. Our new home was a small, two-bedroom cott
Liam. The coffee on my desk had gone completely cold, but I couldn’t bring myself to touch it.I sat in my high-back leather chair at the Kingsley Corps headquarters, my eyes glued to the screen of my personal phone. For the past three hours, I had sent text after text to Evelyn.“Are you okay?”“Evelyn, please answer me.”“Did I do something wrong?”But there was nothing from her end, not even a read receipt.A sharp knock broke the silence of my office. My new assistant, a stern young man who lacked even a fraction of Evelyn's warmth, stepped inside holding a tablet. His expression was deeply uncomfortable."Mr. Kingsley," he started. "I know you explicitly stated you didn't want any media briefings this morning, but... this is trending globally. It involves Ms. Rowe. The public relations department needs to know if we are issuing a statement.""What are you talking about?" I asked, my brow furrowing as I reached out to take the tablet. The moment my eyes hit the screen, my heart st
Evelyn. As I got into work the next day, I had a feeling I was being watched. Fine, maybe it was my paranoia because of the picture that was sent to me last night. I haven’t told Liam about that, by the way. I was scared that if I told him, he would figure out that I’m more trouble than I’m worth
Alaric.Leaving the palace was not much of a hassle for me. My mother thinks I’m tied to the crown by a silver leash, but she’s wrong. I’ve spent twenty-three years learning that the best way to move is to make everyone believe you’re exactly where you belong. So after I spoke to Adrian, I went to
Dominic. My head throbbed as I opened my eyes and saw someone walking away from me. “Evelyn?” I called out, causing her to stop and look back at me. She blushed as our eyes met and that made me really confused. “What’s going on?” I asked, looking down at my body to make sure I still had my cl
