Chapter 6:

Ryan Ashford had always loved winning publicly. Not quietly. He liked the audience. He liked the slow realization dawning on opponents’ faces that he’d already taken the board before they understood the rules. I used to mistake that for confidence. Now I know better. It was just arrogance dressed in tailored suits.

I sat across from Adrian in his home office, the blue glow of my laptop illuminating the files scattered across his desk. Financial statements. Wire transfers. Hotel records. Private photographs. The evidence against Ryan had evolved from dangerous to catastrophic. Tonight, it was finally weaponized.

Adrian loosened his tie, scanning another set of numbers. “The Halberg board meeting is in two hours.” His voice was calm. Too calm. That meant his threat-assessment systems were running at maximum capacity.

I leaned back. “And seventy percent are leaning toward him.”

“Yes.” He replied.

Not ideal. Halberg was too strategic. Too valuable. After eighteen months of pursuit, I wasn’t about to watch Ryan casually walk away with another victory that shouldn’t belong to him. Not Adrian’s empire. Not our peace.

I closed my laptop. “No.” Adrian looked up. “No?”

“He took enough from me once.” My voice was colder now. “He doesn’t get to destabilize your goals too.”

A warm smile flashed across Adrian's face. But it vanished quickly, emotional vulnerability still apparently offended his sensibilities. He folded his arms. “What are you suggesting?”

I smiled.  “We stop playing defense.” That got his full attention. I rotated my laptop toward him. “I built a private encrypted profile last night.”

Adrian looked shocked. “You did what?”

“Paranoia is just pattern recognition with ambition.” His brows lifted. “That’s simultaneously concerning and impressive.”

“Thank you.” I clicked open the secure folder. Everything was meticulously organized. and categorized. If I was going to dismantle a billionaire, I preferred proper file management. Professionalism mattered.

“Here.” I opened the first package. “Financial fraud. Offshore shell companies. Siphoned capital from Ashford Group.” Another click. “Affair records. Hotel bookings. Private club entries.” I tapped the final file. “Julianne Ashford.”

Adrian leaned back. His expression was unreadable. “You’ve really been waiting to hit back at him.”

“For five years.” I said. Silence settled between us. Then Adrian spoke quietly. “Remind me never to betray you.”

I finally smiled. “Smart decision.”

****

The Halberg board meeting started exactly like a disaster. I monitored updates on our other investments from Adrian’s office suite, pretending not to be emotionally invested. Failing miserably. My phone buzzed repeatedly. Live feeds from Adrian’s discreet earpiece and boardroom contacts.

Seventy percent of the board members are already on Ryan's side. My stomach tightened.  I inhaled slowly. I opened my laptop and adjusted the secure VPN. I entered the private encrypted profile. My fingers moved with terrifying calmness. I pulled up the Halberg board distribution list. Uploaded the master dossier. Subject line: *Urgent: Review Before Final Vote Confirmation.*

Clean and professional. Just devastation in attachment form.

I hit send.

Every Halberg director, every Ashford family elder, every legal counsel, and finally...Ryan Ashford himself got the same notification.

Adrian would object to the theatrics. But honestly? It felt earned. I attached everything. Fraud records. Transfer trails. Photographs of him and Julianne. All of it. I stared at the cursor for one second. Then clicked send again.

The sound was anticlimactic. Funny how digital warfare worked. Years of hard work. Ruined with one keystroke. I leaned back. My heart was racing. Pulse loud in my ears. But it was satisfying.

My phone buzzed immediately. It was Adrian.

I answered. “Well?” His voice was clipped and tense. “What did you do?” I smiled. “Just a minor corporate restructuring.”

There was silence. Then he spoke.“Elena.” He knew that tone. Excellent. “You’ll want to check your email.”

The silence was longer this time. Then I heard him exhale.  Half disbelief, half admiration. “You sent it.”

“Yes, to everyone."Another pause. “You’re terrifying.” I smiled. “Marriage changes people.”

What I said actually made him laugh. Small and  brief. Worth everything. Across the line, background noise shifted. Raised voices. movement, and confusion. Something was happening. “What’s going on?” I asked.Adrian lowered his voice. “Board members are checking their phones.”

Excellent. I stood up and walked towards the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the city skyline. Adrenaline humming under my skin. “What’s Ryan doing?” Adrian was silent for a moment. “Still smiling.”

Interesting. He didn’t know yet. Probably still basking in projected victory. Poor man. Very tragic. That would change shortly.

“Wait,” Adrian murmured. Voices grew louder in the background. Sharp and hostile. Something slammed. “The board chairman just opened the attachments.”

I bit back a smile. “Timing is everything.”

“Elena.I may be slightly in love with your criminal mind.” I laughed really hard. “Only slightly?”

“We can discuss percentages later.” His tone shifted instantly. "Oh.” Adrian exclaimed “What?” I asked, knowing fully well that something was going in the background.

“Ryan just checked his phone.” My body went completely still. There it was. My five years of patience and silence is about to be very impactful.

“What’s his face doing?”Adrian went quiet...Then he finally spoke: “…Interesting. He’s gone pale.”My pulse spiked. “He just opened the first attachment.”

I closed my eyes briefly in satisfaction. Because somewhere across the city, Ryan Ashford was currently watching his perfectly curated life collapse in high definition. Glorious. Absolutely glorious. I could almost picture it. Ryan never saw this coming, just as I didn't see the divorce coming five years ago.

Adrian’s voice became quieter. Almost fascinating. “He’s not breathing. A dramatic improvement. Then...sudden shouting exploded through the phone. Several voices overlapped. A chair scraped violently. Someone cursed. Very professional environment.

“What happened now?” I asked. Adrian didn’t answer immediately. When he did, his voice was cold enough to cut glass. “Ryan just saw the Julianne photographs.”

My smile disappeared from anticipation. Because that was the real bomb. Fraud could be negotiated and lawyered. But scandal? Family scandal? A paternal cousin affair? That was social nuclear warfare. No family like the Ashfords survived that cleanly.

“Tell me everything,” I whispered.

Adrian was quiet for a while.“He just dropped his phone.” I stared out across the city lights. Breathing slowly. Finally, the universe had balance again.

Then Adrian spoke one final sentence. And this one changed everything. “Elena.”Something in his tone made my stomach drop. “What?”

“Ryan is leaving the boardroom.” I frowned. “So? Let him run.” There was another pause. “He’s not retreating.”

“Where is he going?” Adrian’s voice dropped to a razor’s edge. “He’s coming towards me.” My grip tightened around the phone. No. He couldn’t know the source of  what's happening to him yet.Not yet because I just started my own games.
