Chapter 2

Author: Adam
The next evening, Ryan and I went to Uncle Doyle's for a family dinner.

We'd just gotten out of the car when we saw Damon standing at the door with a woman.

The woman was Hailey.

"Ryan, someone's trying to kill me." The moment she saw him she threw herself into his arms, her pretty face streaked with tears, clearly terrified.

Ryan frowned and asked in a low voice, "What happened?"

His arms came around her, soothing her in steady strokes, his eyes full of tenderness, as if he'd forgotten I existed.

"Last night, when I got home—" Hailey hiccupped through her sobs, looking scared half to death, and was about to go on when Uncle Doyle came out to meet us.

His pleased expression curdled the instant he took in the scene. "What's going on here?"

Uncle Doyle was a family elder. He'd been through hell and back with my father, and his standing in the family was second to none. The moment Ryan heard his voice, he turned and, without missing a beat, pushed Hailey away.

"Uncle Doyle, this is my cousin. She's run into some trouble." Ryan returned to my side, smooth as anything, and took my hand. "Sweetheart, can Hailey come in with us? She's in real danger right now, and it's because she saved my life. You know that."

I looked at him and said nothing.

Doyle gave a cold snort. "Ryan. As I recall, I only invited Eileen and you tonight, didn’t I?"

"But someone wants me dead, Uncle Doyle." Hailey collapsed at his feet, shaking all over. "Ever since I brought Ryan home from that street corner, covered in blood, those people have been watching me. Last night they got into my room. I was so frightened. Please, Uncle Doyle, I can't go back there."

"Enough. Ryan, can't you handle your own mess?" Doyle was plainly furious. "Since when does any piece of trash get through Doyle's door?"

Hailey blinked. Then she did something none of us saw coming.

She shot to her feet. "How dare you talk about Ryan like that? He's the head of this family. He's my hero. Every one of you should respect him and do as he says."

The room went slack-jawed. I had never been so embarrassed in my life. And Ryan, God help me, looked moved.

Absurd!

"Damon. Take her home," Ryan said, his face cold.

That was for our benefit. Sure enough, he walked over to Hailey, murmured a few words, and whatever he said turned her tears straight into a smile.

On her way out, her hand closed hard between his legs. They thought the gesture was discreet. I knew it was for me.

She even gave me a smug little wave.

"Ryan." Doyle brought his cane down hard. "Look at what you've done. Don't you forget. Without Eileen, you'd still be a nobody on the street."

Before the words finished, Ryan’s expression darkened at once.

He was the family's ruthless Don now, and he couldn't stand to hear about where he came from.

There was no chance we'd be eating dinner tonight.

I stepped forward and gave Doyle a gentle embrace. "Uncle Doyle, you can see how it is. There are things we need to take care of first, so we'll head back tonight. Please look after yourself."

Doyle let out a heavy sigh and said softly in my ear, "Eileen, whatever you decide, you know I'll always be on your side."

I held him again, grateful.

On the drive home, I asked Ryan, "So what do you plan to do about your cousin?"

I leaned hard on the word.

His face was gray, his voice cold. "Of course I remember I got this seat by saving you, the mafia princess. But Hailey saved me too. You of all people should understand what that feels like."

"I would never dirty my own hands, Ryan." I looked at that face, so familiar and so strange, and felt a thin ache in my chest. More than that, I felt sick.

I bore far more responsibilities and had no energy left to condemn his betrayal of our love.

A love gone filthy, a man gone filthy. I wanted neither of them anymore.

"I told you. Handle your mess." I lit a cigarette and spoke to him evenly. "If you can't, then I'll handle you."

The car lurched to a stop with an ugly screech.

I looked at him, cold. He seemed exhausted, breathing hard, as if forcing himself to stay calm.

Then he leaned slowly back against the seat and closed his eyes.

"I told you, there's nothing between me and her. You're the only wife I'll ever have, Eileen." His eyes were deep, his voice almost devout. "I love only you."

But the phone in his shirt pocket, the private one, chose that moment to buzz.

Hailey was in her hospital room, happily putting on lipstick, when she spotted Ryan's tall frame in the distance. She let out a squeal and threw herself at him."Ryan, where have you been these days? I missed you terribly." The coy little voice was cut off cold.Everything about Ryan was ice and steel, his eyes burning, every trace of his old tenderness gone. "You bitch. You and Anthony, working together to play me? How many lives do you think you've got, screwing with me like this?"Hailey fought him frantically. "What are you talking about, Ryan? Did Eileen say something to you? You have to believe me, I'd never do that. I love you.""Is that right? Is that why you were in bed with Anthony? You love Crane Harbor more than you ever loved me." He held the phone up to her face, the bare bodies filling the screen, and Hailey went white with terror."No, Ryan, Anthony forced me into all of it, you have to believe me." She wept and groveled at his feet, but the act had lost every ounce of

The next time I saw Ryan was at the family meeting. For days he'd done everything he could to avoid me. I'd known he would try to stall, so I'd sent the invitations days in advance and arranged this meeting expressly for him.Ryan brought a lot of his men. From the look of it, he'd already decided to go down fighting.Uncle Doyle solemnly announced the family's decision. Ryan and I would divorce, and all of his power would be reclaimed, on the grounds that he had been false to his marriage and false to the family, that he had an affair with a spy planted by the South Side, and had even attempted to harm his own wife.Ryan looked haggard. A few days had thinned him out, and the light had gone from his eyes."I told you, there will be no divorce." He never once looked at me. "Have you all forgotten how much blood I've spilled for this family? You old men have had it easy these past years, and that's because I was the one out there risking my neck for you.""And now you think you can just

It was two in the morning by the time Ryan got home.At that hour I should have been fast asleep, but I was sitting on the sofa drinking coffee. I'd stayed up for him on purpose. He seemed to falter for a second, then recovered and sat down slowly across from me. He wanted to say something, but in the end he didn't.A long silence."Eileen, I'm sorry. But you never should have gone after Hailey. She's just an innocent girl." Ryan let out a long sigh."Take a look at this." I pushed the file across to him.He frowned, read the first few lines, and his face changed all at once. "What is this? You want a divorce?""Isn't it obvious." I nodded slowly."Why? Because I lost my temper with you? I told you, Hailey's no threat to you, I was only—" He slammed the file down on the table and shouted. He rarely lost his temper like this. He was a man of few words, never mind pacing back and forth like this. All these unusual behaviors pointed to only one thing. He was rattled."Ryan." I called him

I cut my hair short and changed into clean black, head to toe.Looking at the sharp figure in the mirror, I almost saw the woman I'd been five years ago.Rhodes walked in. His hard gaze landed on me and seemed to catch for a moment."Welcome back, my Princess." Rare excitement flickered in his eyes. That was right. The Eileen who'd once made every rival's blood run cold was finally back."Is it done?" I gestured for him to sit across from me.He handed me a file. "This is everyone Ryan's planted in the family over the past six months."I scanned it and let out a cold laugh. "His ambition runs deep. Looks like he started planning to reshuffle the whole board half a year ago.""He overestimated himself. I've already passed the list to Mr. Doyle and a few of the elders. We can pull every one of them whenever we want," Rhodes said with contempt."Good work." I looked up. "How much have we dug up on Anthony?""We need more time. But we turned up something unexpected along the way." His expr

That night, Ryan didn't come home.Early the next morning, Damon called. "Miss, you should come to the hospital.""Why?" I rubbed my swollen, tired eyes.He started to say something, then stopped, and in the end all he managed was, "You really should come see for yourself.""Do you want to go?" Rhodes asked quietly."Let's go." A sudden weariness settled over me. "Whatever play they're putting on, it wouldn't be much of a show without me in the audience."Rhodes opened his mouth, then shut it again. The moment I walked into the hospital, I saw the corridor packed with our family's people. When they saw me, every one of them stepped aside and stood at attention. All this fuss? I walked into the room, puzzled. The room reeked of blood. Hailey lay unconscious on the bed, her pale lips drained of color, her abdomen wrapped in thick bandages already showing red, like a broken doll.Quick footsteps sounded behind me. I turned and saw Ryan's face twisted with rage."What's happening—" Before

Ryan hesitated, then pressed answer anyway."Ryan, help me." Of course it was Hailey, crying. "I've got nowhere else to go."He cupped a hand over the receiver, his face going gray. She said something more, and he cut her off, urgent. "Don't go anywhere. Stay right there and wait for me."Then, without a single word to me, he floored the gas.I said nothing, and something in me sank. The car stopped in front of our building, and before it had even settled Ryan was out the door and running.Hailey practically launched herself at him, both arms locked around his neck, her red lips nearly pressed to his throat."My place is torn apart, everything smashed. I was so scared." She sobbed quietly, those alluring eyes with room for no one but Ryan. "You're all I have, Ryan. I'm so frightened."She looked utterly pitiful.Ryan couldn't bear it. He kept soothing her, even pressing kisses to her hair. The two of them held each other like no one else existed, as if they'd long forgotten there was a
