Chapter 3

Author: Nice Weather
Vito froze. For a moment, he couldn't speak. He stared at me in disbelief before sneering, as though he'd suddenly realized what was going on.

"Luisa, you'll even threaten me with divorce, just to drive a wedge between Sofia and me? Stop being so dramatic. Why would you want a divorce from me when you're pregnant with my child?"

His words made my hand instinctively drift to my abdomen. My eyes burned as if they'd been scorched by fire.

"The baby's gone, Vito. It died while you were taking Sofia's cat to the vet."

Vito stood in stunned silence for a moment before letting out a contemptuous snort.

"I never knew you were this kind of person, Luisa. You'd actually curse our own child just to get my attention! That's enough. I've been swamped lately. I don't have time to play these childish games with you."

I looked at him, my body trembling uncontrollably.

Of course he was swamped. He had his hands full taking Sofia's cat to the vet, establishing her as his first love to the media, and remembering all of her favorite foods.

But he couldn't spare even a few minutes for the wife he'd been married to for seven years.

Thinking about how much I'd trusted and depended on him all these years, I couldn't help but feel like a complete mockery.

I lifted my head, letting the tears run down through my cheeks unchecked.

Beside me, Vito frowned.

"Drop the act, Luisa. If you keep behaving like a lunatic, you'll bring disgrace to the Costa family! I'm going to pretend like I didn't hear what you said today—but I don't want this happening again.

"I need to settle some matters for the family. Spend some time alone to come back to your senses."

With that, he left with Sofia, the sound of the front door closing echoing through the villa.

I walked into the bedroom and began packing the things I intended to take with me. Just as I was about to zip up my suitcase, my phone lit up.

Carlo Moretti, Vito's underboss, had just posted a photo to the Costa family's group chat. In it, Vito had one arm wrapped around Sofia's waist as they stood inside an upscale boutique.

Carlo also sent a message. "Don Vito spares no expense when it comes to Sofia. She truly is the woman he has loved all along!"

My grip tightened around my phone. Just as I was about to put it down, a private message from Sofia popped up.

"Don't read too much into it, Luisa. I tore my dress by accident, and Vito didn't want me to be embarrassed. That's why he insisted on dragging me here for a new outfit."

After staring at the message for a moment, I blocked Sofia's number.

That afternoon, I went to Costa Group as usual, only to find that my office had been cleared out. All of my things had been replaced with Sofia's belongings.

"Who did this?" I questioned.

One of the foot soldiers stood in the doorway, his gaze evasive as he replied, "It was Don Vito's orders… He called for an organizational restructuring."

And after checking the updated organization chart, I found out that I was the only one who'd been removed.

I froze for a moment before calling Vito on the spot. When he answered, he said nonchalantly, "You're pregnant, so just stay at home. Sofia can take over your place and handle the responsibilities for you. It's not like I can't even afford to financially support my own wife."

I opened the folder on the desk labeled with Sofia's name. It was filled with documents of the trade deals I spent countless sleepless nights overseeing.

My hands began shaking uncontrollably. "I was the one who set up these deals, Vito."

Vito's voice instantly turned icy. "Even so, everything belongs to the Costa family. When did you become so petty, Luisa?

"Sofia doesn't want to be an administrative secretary anymore. She wants to get involved with the core business. Stop trying to compete with her for everything."

I closed my eyes. A memory flashed through my mind.

Last winter, I'd been in the middle of a negotiation for an arms shipment at the docks when the meeting broke down, and the situation turned hostile.

I took a bullet to the calf before I was pulled into a car.

That night, at the hospital, Vito never left my side. He had promised me, "I swear I'll never let you face that kind of danger again."

Back then, I thought it was because he loved me. Now, it dawned on me that he was just risking my life to fulfill Sofia's wishes for her.

On the other end of the line, Vito's voice became commanding.

"I'm in the middle of a family meeting right now. When I'm back later tonight, complete the handover."

I steeled my voice to stop it from trembling and replied shortly, "Fine."

Once the call ended, I opened my email account. I clicked on the job offer I'd received from a company in Newbourne, a city thousands of miles away, and typed a reply.

"I can report to work tomorrow, Mr. Vitale."

In the past, I had always given in whenever Sofia asked me for help. When she wanted a job, I helped her with her job applications. When she wanted to be in charge of a project, I stayed up all night preparing her proposals.I had genuinely treated her as my best friend, but she went behind my back to seduce my husband."Sofia, we stopped being friends the moment you started trying to seduce Vito," I said before ending the call and blocking the number.…The next morning, when I left my apartment to head to work, the doorman called out to me in the lobby."Ms. Marino!"He glanced outside before lowering his voice, saying, "During the storm last night, a man spent the entire night kneeling outside your window. They had to haul him off at 4:00 am."Without pausing in my tracks, I replied, "Ignore him."I'd just opened the door to my car when a figure suddenly rushed out from behind a pillar and stood in my way.It was Vito. His shirt was completely soaked through, clinging to h

In the days that followed, I stuck to my regular routine. I went to work as usual, traveling back and forth between my apartment and the office every day.One evening, after finishing my work, I went down to the basement parking lot to get my car. As I turned around the corner, I saw someone leaning against my car.It was Vito.He had lost a ton of weight. His cheekbones now protruded sharply, and dark circles ringed beneath his eyes. His white dress shirt was covered in creases, and one of the buttons on his cuff was missing. The collar hung open as well.In his hand was a bouquet of lilies. The petals had already begun to wilt a little, as if he'd been clutching them for a very long time. The moment he saw me, his dim eyes brightened."Luisa!"My footsteps faltered briefly before I walked right past him and headed for the driver's seat.Vito rushed forward and grabbed my wrist. "Are you done being angry? When are you coming back with me?"I flung his hand off. "I'm never goi

A year flew by, and I'd settled into my new job.One morning, I received an encrypted notification about a change in records for the Costa family's vault. The emerald pendant had been transferred back under my name. The vault manager sent me a message. "Don Vito says he knows he had wrongfully accused you back then. He wants to know where you are now."I stared at the message for a few seconds before firing back a curt response."It's none of his business where I am. Don't bother telling me about what's happening over on his side either."After sending the message, I continued reviewing some work documents. Not long after, my phone rang. It was a call from Riviera Hospital. When I answered, a nurse said to me, "Ms. Marino, the hospital recently launched a comprehensive newborn health screening package. It includes genetic screening and congenital development assessments, making it more thorough than previous prenatal checkups."Would you like to know more about it? I can send yo

Vito kept calling repeatedly, only to hear the same automated message. Finally, he lowered his phone in defeat."There's no way… She's carrying my child… If she leaves me, where could she possibly go?" he mumbled to himself.Pulling up his WhatsApp chat with me, he began to type away, erasing a few times before finally sending a message."I know I've wronged you, but was it really necessary to block me? Why can't we just talk things through face to face?"But the message didn't go through either—it was left perpetually on a single tick. He realized I must've blocked his number."Luisa…" He stared at his phone in disbelief.Sofia could barely suppress the smile tugging at the corners of her mouth. She took a deep breath before saying in a steady voice, "I guess we really did go a little too far this time. We ended up hurting her without meaning to."Why don't I go back with you tonight? Luisa and I have been friends for so many years. I'm sure she'll understand."Vito didn't ans

The moment I regained cell service after landing in Newbourne, I saw a bunch of missed-call notifications. They were all from Vito. Realizing I hadn't blocked his number yet, I did it right away.Several hours earlier, in his office at Costa Group, Vito was lounging on the couch, idly scratching Nina's chin. But his gaze kept drifting toward the window.Sensing that he was distracted, Sofia put her tablet aside and asked softly, "Vito, are you still thinking about the situation with Luisa?"Vito stiffened, his fingers freezing on the back of Nina's neck."Do you think… it's possible that I'd wrongfully blamed her for it? When she got shot in the calf back then, I brought her to the hospital, and she had to get over a dozen stitches. But when she woke up, the first thing she did was ask if anyone was keeping an eye on our arms shipment."She has always kept an eye on the family business to ensure that nothing goes wrong. Would she really sell out the arms shipment route she put t

That evening, I brought my resignation paperwork to Vito's office.Members of the Costa family lining both sides of the office turned to glare at me with undisguised contempt.Vito was sitting in his office, behind his desk. His expression was as dark as night. For a moment, I didn't know what was going on.Suddenly, Sofia came into the office. She grabbed my wrist, her eyes red, looking like she'd suffered some terrible injustice."I've always considered you my friend, Luisa! How could you sell the information about our arms shipment route to our rivals just to force me out of the company? If you'd told me from the beginning that you were the one who tampered with that shipment, I never would've let Vito pursue the matter."I yanked my hand away from her. "What the hell are you talking about? Why would I ever touch the family's cargo?"As soon as I finished speaking, Vito shot to his feet and marched toward me."You're still making excuses? Who else could it have been, if not
