Chapter 5

Author: Three Two
The alarm from the heart monitor blasted through the entire floor.

Doctors were shouting, “We need to resuscitate!”

In absolute despair, I begged every bystander in the hallway for help. “Excuse me, is your blood type O-negative?”

A kind young girl stopped and said, “I am.”

Just like that, Annie was saved, and the numbers on the monitor returned to normal.

When she woke up, she looked around the ward. “Did Daddy come?”

I couldn’t bear to disappoint her, so I said, “He’s out working. He’ll come as soon as he's off work. He even said he’d bring you a gift.”

She nodded happily.

I wiped my face and tried sending him a message. Since I wasn’t blocked anymore, I told him to bring a gift for Annie and that we could talk about everything else later.

He agreed. Yet when he arrived that night, his hands were empty.

“Where’s the gift?”

He rubbed his temples. “I’m sorry. I forgot.”

I lost my temper. “Do you have any idea what happened last night–”

Annie cut in before I could finish, hiding her disappointment remarkably well. “It’s okay. As long as Daddy is here.”

He nodded, leaning against the wall as he muttered, “Last night, when I walked Quinn home, I saw my parents. I hadn’t seen them in six years… and I didn’t even dare to say hello.”

Looking at his bleak smile, I turned my head away.

After that day, I stayed with Annie during the day and worked part-time at night. With those earnings, I managed to rent a house in a small southern town.

Julian, too, worked like a dog to make money, leaving early in the morning and returning late at night, and transferred all his earnings to me.

Occasionally, he would stare at me and say, “Claire, if I make enough money, we can…”

However, he never finished the rest of his sentence.

Though we lived under the same roof, we were now like two strangers.

On the day Annie was discharged from the hospital, she tugged at Julian’s shirt tail. “Daddy, can you please stay in tomorrow? Can we just have a meal together?”

Julian patted her head and agreed. “Okay.”

That night, Annie lay in my arms, saying, “Mommy, my teacher said that we should say a proper goodbye when we leave.”

The next day, she woke up very early. She wanted to make Julian’s favorite dish—pasta—with her own hands. She even stood on a small stool to mix the sauce and the pasta herself.

However, just as the dish was brought to the table, Julian’s phone rang.

He accidentally put it on speaker, and Quinn’s tearful voice echoed through the room. “I’m really leaving this time. I’ve agreed to the arranged marriage my family set up. I can’t wait for you anymore.”

Julian gripped his phone tightly and rushed out the door.

I grabbed hold of him. “You promised Annie you’d have a meal with her!”

He pried my fingers off, his face filled with anxiety. “It’s just a meal! It’s the same no matter when we eat it!”

With that, he left.

Annie stood at the doorway, watching as he walked away, for a very long time.

She even spoke up to comfort me. “It’s okay, Mommy. Writing a goodbye note to Daddy works just as well.”

Her writing was crooked but earnest, and she placed the note on the coffee table.

“Mommy, let’s go.”

I nodded, took her by the hand, dragged our luggage along, and shut the door behind us. I didn’t look back, not even once.

That night, when Julian returned home, the apartment was quiet, and the lights were off. The plate of pasta in the oven had gone cold.

He called out twice, but no one answered. That was when he found the note left on the table.

In Annie’s crooked writing, it said, “Goodbye, Daddy. Please eat well and sleep well. From now on, you won’t have to work so hard anymore.”

I touched his hair gently, suddenly realizing that he was already thirty-one years old.“It’s okay. Everything will get better.”I had said those exact words before. The truth was, Julian wasn’t all that brave back then, either. There was this one time, a very long time ago, when he had worked himself to exhaustion just to make money, and he lay in bed with a high fever, talking in his delirium.I had wrung out a towel to lay over his forehead when he suddenly grabbed my wrist. His eyes were red, and his voice sounded raspy.“Claire, I have nothing left. I have no family. My parents don’t want me anymore.”I cried along with him, unable to do anything except press my face against his scorching palm, saying, “It’s okay, Julian. Everything will get better.”He was delirious from the fever, and tears silently trickled from the corners of his eyes into his hair. The next day, when he woke up, I wiped them away for him, over and over again. However, it was as if nothing ever happened

He came to pick up Annie from school and stood by the gate. With his hands shoved into his coat pockets, he stared blankly in a particular direction without moving an inch.I called his name twice before he finally turned his head, his reactions painfully slow, as if muffled through a dense wall.A medicine bottle slipped out of his pocket and rolled onto the ground. Once I read the label, I couldn’t help but raise my voice.“Are you sick?”He opened his eyes, his face looking terribly pale, as if something deep inside him was collapsing bit by bit.“I went to see a doctor,” he said. “They told me I have depression.”His tone was flat, as if he were just commenting about the weather today. “The pills help a little. If I don’t, I can’t sleep the entire night.”“How long has it been?”“I forgot. Maybe two years.”Two years. My fingers curled up slightly. Wasn’t that right when we separated two years ago?“Then why did you come to Sothersby Town? Did the doctor say you could tr

A shiny black sedan was parked on the open patch of ground in front of my house. It stuck out like a sore thumb against the run-down apartment buildings, clotheslines, and cluttered corners filled with junk.Annie’s hand tightened around mine. She saw it, too. A man was standing next to the car, wearing a dark gray overcoat and holding nothing in his hands.Annie froze in place. Her mouth parted slightly, but no sound came out.He spoke first. “Annie.”His voice wasn’t loud, almost as if he was afraid of scaring her.Annie let go of my hand and took two steps forward, only to stop and look back at me. Once I nodded at her, she ran over, stopping right in front of him. Looking up, she called out, “Daddy.”The word came out awkwardly, as if she had been wanting to say it for a long time.He bent down and raised a hand to touch her face, but paused halfway. In the end, he rested his hand gently on top of her head.“You’ve grown taller.”Even though it had been two years since t

The southern coastal town was called Sothersby Town. The temperature and humidity there were just right. The moment we got off the bus, Annie expressed how much she loved the town.I managed to land a job at the local medical clinic helping the elderly doctor. The pay was not high, but the best part was that I could bring Annie with me.Right next to the clinic was our rented house. With the window open, I could see a river, in which the water was an unreal shade of green.Annie never mentioned her father or brought up Julian to me. Perhaps because she had been sick since she was little, she was always far more mature than other children her age. Every day, she quietly waited for me at home. Every morning, she would follow me to the open space in front of the clinic for a slow walk.At first, she would start gasping for air after walking for just ten minutes. Her little face would turn purple, and she would crouch on the ground and wouldn’t be able to get back up.I would crouc

He subconsciously described someone with cute, slightly pointed canines, deep dimples when she smiled, and the subtle scent of flowers instead of perfume. The moment the words left his mouth, his mother slapped him hard across the face.“You useless fool! Why are you still thinking about that woman?”He was taken aback. Had he really been talking about me the whole time?Suddenly, his mind drifted back to the day we first met. I had been standing by the entrance, bathed in warm sunshine as I welcomed him. To him, I was so breathtakingly beautiful that it felt unreal. In that split second, he was reminded of a graceful white swan he had once seen in a picture book—something so beautiful that anyone would long to possess it, cherish it, and fall head over heels in love with it. However, just as quickly, he shook his head. No, that couldn’t be it; he had simply described me out of habit. That was until one late night, when he was heading home after a business dinner, completely

  • Done with You   Chapter 6

Julian didn’t call out again, nor did he even think about making a phone call. He simply finished that cold plate of pasta in silence. He didn’t reheat it. He just sat in the dim living room, swallowing it bite after bite. The tomato sauce was far too sour, and there was far too much salt. That was Annie’s cooking, alright. On the few days she was healthy, the little girl was always begging to cook his favorite dish for him.In truth, he didn’t actually like the dish, but it was one of the decent options among cheap meals. So, over the past few years, Julian had come to love it too. Annie could never remember how much salt to put in, but he ate every last bit, leaving the plate spotless. After that, he stayed in the apartment for a long time. He didn’t look for us, he didn’t call, and he didn’t even shed a tear. He simply leaned back on the couch, staring at the light fixture on the ceiling that hadn’t been cleaned in forever. The apartment was so quiet that he could hear the wa
