Cassie pressed her hands over her face. He was right. God, he was so right and she hated it.

"I can't do this," she whispered.

"Can't do what? Can't feel something real or can't let yourself be happy, which one?"

"I can't lose myself in you!" Cassie's voice rose. "I can't become one of those women who throws away everything for a man. I can't be weak like that."

"Loving someone doesn't make you weak, Cassie. It makes you human."

"You don't understand—"

"I understand perfectly." Dom's voice soun

CHAPTER SEVENTY FIVEAfter that night, something changed.Dom still pushed hard in physical therapy, but differently. He still wanted to recover quickly, but he stopped acting like recovery was punishment. He stopped refusing medication and started sleeping at least a few hours a night.More importantly, he started talking to her again. The next morning, when Cassie came into the room with coffee, he actually smiled at her. It was small and tired and still marked by pain, but it was genuine."Thank you for the coffee," he said, and the words felt like a bridge being built between them. She sat down beside him and they talked. They talked about their fears, their hopes and their future."I think I had a breakdown," Dom said quietly. "After I woke up, I think I just... broke.""You were entitled to break," Cassie said. "You went through something traumatic. Breaking makes sense.""But I shouldn't have taken it out on you. You were the only person who was there. The only person who actua

  • Dumped by the Heir, Claimed by his Brother    CHAPTER SEVENTY FOUR

CHAPTER SEVENTY FOURDom had gone through physical therapy that morning and had pushed himself to the point of vomiting. David had stopped the session early, worried about him, but Dom had just wiped his mouth and insisted he could keep going."You're hurting yourself," David said firmly. "We're done for today.""We're not done until I say we're done," Dom replied. But the therapist was professional and experienced with difficult patients, and he packed up his equipment and left anyway. After that, Dom refused to get back into bed. He'd insisted on sitting in the chair by the window, even though his leg was throbbing and he was pale with pain. He'd been awake for thirty-six hours straight, refusing to sleep, convinced that sleep was wasted time.Cassie had watched him deteriorate all day. He had become more and more withdrawn and more and more aggressive when anyone tried to talk to him. Slowly, he was being consumed by whatever darkness was living inside his head.Around eight o'cloc

  • Dumped by the Heir, Claimed by his Brother    CHAPTER SEVENTY THREE

CHAPTER SEVENTY THREEBy day twelve, Cassie had stopped trying. She'd arrived at the hospital that morning with coffee from the place Dom used to like. She set it on the side table and he glanced at it like it was something that had no relevance to him, then looked back out the window."I brought you breakfast," she said, setting down the bag from the cafe downstairs. "They have those croissants you like."He still didn't respond. He just continued to stare out at the city beyond the glass like she wasn't even there. She sat down in the visitor's chair and opened the bag anyway, setting the croissant on a plate in case he got hungry later. The smell of butter and chocolate filled the room but he didn't react to it at all. This was their new normal. Him not talking, her trying anyway, pretending like his silence wasn't destroying her. She'd been here every single day since the accident. She slept there for weeks and even now, all she was being was supportive but all he was interested

  • Dumped by the Heir, Claimed by his Brother    CHAPTER SEVENTY TWO

CHAPTER SEVENTY TWOPhysical therapy finally started. The therapist's name was David and he was professional and methodical and had no patience for Dom's attempts to push past what his body could do."You're going to damage the healing nerves," David said firmly when Dom tried to move his leg through a full range of motion during their first session. "We take this slow and steady. That's how recovery works.""I don't have time to take anything slow," Dom said. His jaw was tight, his hands gripping the bed rails."You have whatever time your body needs," David replied. "We're looking at four months minimum for you to walk without assistance. That's being conservative. You might need longer."Dom's expression didn't change, but Cassie felt something shift in the air around him."I'll do it in two months," he said quietly."That's not realistic…”"Two months," Dom repeated, cutting him off. "I'll push harder. I'll do the work but I'm not spending four months in this hospital."David loo

CHAPTER SEVENTY ONEShe sat there for hours, just holding his hand and downloading everything that had happened while he was out. She told him how her mother came to the hospital and her father showed up, destroying the small calm they had built with his anger and selfishness."There's something else," she said finally, because he deserved to know. "The car that hit us, it wasn't random. Someone did it deliberately. They wanted to..." She couldn't finish the sentence. But she could see in Dom's eyes that he understood. The fury that flashed across his face was so intense that for a moment he looked like a predator, dangerous and cold. He tried to move and gasped with pain, and Cassie immediately put her hand on his chest to keep him still."Don't. Please don't try to move. You're going to hurt yourself."But she could feel the tension in his body, the rage underneath the surface, the fact that he wanted to get out of this bed and find whoever had done this and destroy them. Now, even

CHAPTER SEVENTYDom made it through the surgery with flying colors and was showing signs of improvement. His brain was swelling less and his body was healing.Leo came into the room holding a tablet, his expression unreadable. He gestured for Cassie to follow him into the hallway."I have information," he said quietly. "About the accident."Cassie's heart rate picked up. "And?""The vehicle that hit you was a black SUV, registered to a shell company out of New Jersey but from the look of things, the company doesn't exactly exist. It's just a front. The investigator traced the financial transactions and found a burner phone was used to hire a driver for exactly twenty-four hours on the day of the accident.""Hire him to do what?" Cassie asked, though she already knew the answer."Hit your car. The investigator enhanced the highway footage and the impact trajectory shows it was aimed specifically at the passengers side. What made it look like a hit and run was the fact that after the hi

"I had my father's accountants walk me through the share transfer documents last week." Cassie kept her voice casual, watching Dom's reaction. "There's a clause we can activate. Dom's office looked like a war room. Four different laptops were open on his desk, each showing different screens.
